Report: James Farrow to Transfer

Update: It looks likes Virginia Tech is denying Allen Trieu's original report. Andy Bitter Tweeted the following: "Virginia Tech says CB James Farrow has not been granted a release. http://Scout.com tweet says he has with intent to transfer. #Hokies". Mark Giannotto then Tweeted "Torrian Gray, Farrow's position coach and recruiter, said this is the first he's heard about Farrow potentially transferring. #Hokies".

I followed up with Trieu on Twitter about Tech's denial.

It seems like he spoke with Farrow this morning. Farrow himself Tweeted the following (1, 2) about an hour ago.

Draw your own conclusions about what's happening. My original post is as follows.

-----

This report is according to Allen Trieu of Scout.com (Fox Sports NEXT).

Farrow was rated by Rivals.com as the second best player coming out of high school in Minnesota 2011, though he redshirted his freshman year at Tech. He has blazing 4.4 speed and good size so it was expected he'd compete to earn playing time at corner in 2012.

Details of the release are unknown at this time. Keep in mind James' father Lonnie played for Minnesota back in the 80s. We wish him the best of luck moving forward.

What does everyone think the effect of James' transfer will be on the secondary moving into spring ball.

Comments

Unless something else comes out about this (not likely), I guess we assume he took notice of the deep DB haul we took in this year's class? Can't blame him, if he expected to get passed by Tookes and Manning. I'm sure glad Holmes didn't decide to do the same thing with the RB recruiting class of 2012.

What's Important Now

From Exum's Tweet

"Man. Everybody quick to hide from some competition and adversity these days. What happen to fight it out? Best man wins?" ... I wonder if this has anything to do with Manning coming in and pushing him early. The lack of depth is defiantly an concern, but if Manning is already putting this much pressure on him, then we can take somewhat of a positive out of the situation..and that is Manning is going to be a stud.

Why would you leave?

Look if you can't compete at VT, how the hell can you compete at the NFL level?

Position Changes?

Whether we move Aromire or Jarrett back, or Donovan Riley, it will be interesting to see how the depth chart shakes out.

@Fightin_Gobbler

Go Hokies

Go Falcons

My guess is the coaches will first evaluate what they have. I could see Jarrett working at both corner and safety in spring. Right now the starting corners would be Fuller and Bonner. The coaches are very high on Donaldven Manning. Assuming he's as good everyone believes he can be, he'd be the third guy right now. Davion Tookes is another guy with great speed the coaches like, but he and the other DBs won't be on campus until after spring.

What stings a bit is now both corner and receiver are positions of need. Plans might change if the coaches were considering to flip one of the incoming DBs I haven't mentioned to receiver.

Kid's got to do what he's got to do

In a sport like Football, sometimes you can't really get a fair shake at a position. Who knows if Bruce Taylor would have ever gotten meaningful playing time if River's wasn't injured? Things like that can keep a great player off the field. If he thinks he's got a better shot elsewhere to get on the field, I say more power to him. If coaches can jump ship on a paid contract, and we say "It's what's best fo rhim and his family", I don't see why players can't.

38-0 bro

Agree 100%

Also just to spin it to a positive light we gain another scholarship for 2013 which is always a good thing considering we only have 14-15 scholarships left now

UVA: Jefferson's biggest mistake

@pbowman6

Also...

I think we're going to be just fine in the defensive backfield.

and i'm sure

him being so far away from home definitely plays into this .. but i agree -- if you don't want to compete for your spot or be pushed or you feel like a better decision is to move on, so be it

didn't see the kid at all so i don't know what we'll be missing. if he was the #2 player out of minnesota, he must have some skills

whatever the case, he's a db -- long term, we can stand to lose someone here. it'll just force manning and tookes to step up.

In 2012 will we miss him on special teams the most?

We have to replace Wilson returning kickoffs, Hosley and Coale returning punts. When we were recruiting him I watched his film and thought he could contribute in the kicking game.

exactly what i was thinking

minnesota is a long way from bburg. i could be wrong but he was probably homesick and decided to get closer to home.

good luck to him

Chris Hill

All I gotta say is he is a true Hokie. 4 star recruit, never became the starter, played behind 2 star recruits and underclassmen. He never whined, never complained, just went about his business. Senior year, he gets called upon when Hosley got hurt and played remarkably well. If he wasn't there to play, the secondary would have been atrocious this past year.

Gotta do what you gotta do, but you are a part of team, you work on what you need to do to better the team.

Maybe this has nothing to do with football. Maybe it's something else. But if it was about playing time, he would have just as many opportunities to get that nickle spot as anyone else on the team.

Hill's Emergence

Before this year I thought Chris Hill was just a 4 star flop. I had heard that he didn't work in the film room since he got here and he just didn't get it. I don't know if something clicked with him last offseason, but he was far and away the most surprising player in the fall. While Hosley and Fuller were the guys, Hill's emergence was what let Foster move Fuller around. I don't care that it took Hill forever to figure into the equation. He was a rock when we needed him most.

Hill really stepped up

I was surprised to see him on so many plays this year. I think with Hill's ability and how well Exum played we will be fine next season.

Young People

Don't always make the best decisions. I was a college student once and have one in college now. They don't always heed the best advice or recognize risks. Sometimes they listen too much to their peers, who aren't so smart. But hey, if you are at least 18 you are an adult, right?

I don't know the facts or the situation in this case so can't comment on it. I just know that young people can make big mistakes (the name Cody Journell sound familiar?)

any word on where he'll end up?
