Report from David Teel: No Pep Hamilton, Basically

This could be a very bumpy ride.

ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch. :(

Who's next on the list?

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

who are the other people that are on the top of our list if we don't get him. have we even interviewed anyone else?

tyrod did it mikey! tyrod did it!

Is Stinespring in the box selecting "Ask Corso" still a legit option?

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

I just died a little inside.

Unbreak my heart

There is nothing confirmed that even this is the case. This could be just as false as the reports saying he is coming.

I'm more inclined to believe this than the rumors of him coming to VT. We were already living on a prayer when its been stated that his interviewing with us was a ploy to pull more money from Stanford.

I mean, I hope this isn't true...but I wouldn't be surprised if it is.

It's safe to say that I've...

Not completely unexpected.

If there is a new OC in Blacksburg, I'll be surprised if he has any prior OC experience in any of the "power" conferences.

As a fan base

We should be use to this. We always get are legs ripped out from under us i.e last second comebacks that we are usually on the wrong end of, blown calls, lost recruits before national signing day etc. We all still come back to the games, to this site because we love VT. We know for certain that we are getting a new offensive coordinator that much we do know who its going to be is another question. But at the beginning of the season or even after the Clemson game if you were to tell any vt fan we were getting a new offeensive coordinator we wouldn't have cared if it was a bum of the street as long as ocainspring was gone.

UVA: Jefferson's biggest mistake

We don't know for certain that there will be a new OC. There's been no official word on a firing or a change in position within the football staff yet. It's all speculation until there is word from VT.

As much as I'd like to see a new OC, it wouldn't surprise me if it was the same thing next season.

At this point

I feel like we're going to be stuck with our current coaches.

This was my concern with waiting for the bowl game to be played and then still having nothing announced. Beamer should have been looking after the 7th game of the season and sending out feelers. You can't wait. Tech did the same with firing Greenberg. I partially feel if this process was started soon (3 seasons ago) we would have had a better pool of candidates to choose from. I don't feel strongly about anyone available right now. We needed an OC who would come in and run an offense to compliment the D.

Heather Dinich is creaming her shorts.

Felt sick from Pep tweet ... this comment pushed me over the edge

< sarcasm > Are there any new Graduate Assistants with the team that Beamer wants to have call plays for the next 11 years? < /sarcasm >

Worked for Clemson's secondary in their bowl game, right? Bahahahaha, fml...

This is Frank's fault!

For the simple fact that the moved should have been made after the 2006 season. We were still a HOT team, bud had just produced 2 top defenses just finished getting TT to commit instead old Frank stuck with Stiney, and over the course of the next 4 Seasons stiney did nothing not even a top 20 offense and with arguably the best offensive talent at every positions we ever had. I hate to say this Hokie fans but unless we pull some young gun under the Radar and Frank keeps his hands off of the offense, we are in for alot more 7 win seasons and it makes me wanna puke.

Well, this is what happens when you invest your emotions into a team/coach. Look, maybe this isn't true, but I sure do feel like it probably is.

It hurts right now, and now isn't the time to put blame out there. I think I remember seeing something posted on this site that said Beamer has been talking to other candidates for the job.

Don't forget how awful our offense was/is. It has to get better with any type of change that doesn't involve somebody named O'Cain or Stinespring right?

Relax guys, yes this sucks but we are still (I think) in the market for an OC, we could still land someone. And let's face it, our style isn't getting the sexy guy, it's getting a nobody and letting them become even better than the other guy.

You got a point there... Diamond in the rough. Let's find ours.

This is how Beamer handles a coaching search

Where do you find this stuff? Haha

Next up is to hear that Thomas is leaving.

Rip his freaking head off!

I'm hearing

VTScoopStaff who runs the board says there will be a new OC. They also said Pep wasn't the only top-shelf OC they interviews, but why aren't they giving out names is what is pissing me off.

Not even a Google search is giving me any luck.

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

Was just wondering

...where do you guys get your info? How you you guys have these inside sources??? I want in!

For me...

It is using Twitter, but I have absolutely zero inside info.

1. Virginia Tech offensive coordinator

Offensive coordinator / tight ends / offensive tackles coach Bryan Stinespring hasn't been demoted, but many feel someone new will run the offensive moving forward. Receivers coach Kevin Sherman has left for Purdue and it is expected that offensive guards / centers coach Curt Newsome will head to James Madison. After winning the Russell Athletic Bowl, Frank Beamer said his No. 1 priority will be the ability to run the football. Stanford offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton could be a name that gets in the mix here. Shane Beamer coached with Shawn Elliot at South Carolina, but it would seem that Elliot would only leave South Carolina for a coordinator position. Steve Spurrier has been quite outspoken how much he likes Elliot, recently indicating that Elliot was one of his best hires ever.

so what's the word on elliot? has he interviewed with vt?

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

I have no idea. From what I understand (via Chris Coleman of Tech Sideline), Beamer issued gag order, so nobody is going to let anything leak out of his office without his say so. It would appear to me that Pep was one of the candidates Beamer interviewed. And Shane Beamer was with Beamer the elder in Nashville, so maybe there may be some SEC OC that Beamer is interested in.

I honestly don't know. It's pure speculation.

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

Brilliant, sir. You win the internet.

Pep Hamilton to Chuck Long, supposedly? NO.

I love Virginia Tech, regardless of the outcome of every game.

One rumor I read said Pep was waiting on an expected...

offer from the 49ers. Maybe all hope isn't lost?

I'm not sold that Pep was the answer...

I've seen different notes about who calls plays and has a more active OC role at Stanford. So with that conflicting info, I don't truly see his resume. Looking at pre-Stanford, it's really not that impressive. Not like he dominated at Howard or something. In addition, it's rumored he wants to step up, and may already be considered for other HC positions. Don't want a guy who is going to give us one good year and jump ship, putting us in another awkward position.

I think everyone just got too excited about getting rid of Stiney, that they loved Pep. There are other young guys out there waiting to prove something. Beamer is looking around. The goal is to remove Stiney. That is more than likely happening. So give it some time on the OC pick. Remember we are talking about Beamer here, dude is not hastey.

Lemme give it a whirl

Just a Summary of my day in bullet points:

•Woke up late thanks to my new alarm clock I got for Christmas that I apparently am not smarter than.
•Normal 45 minute commute.
•Get to work, spills coffee on desk.
•Ate chipotle for lunch which is usually an awesome treat until the subsequent detonation.
•On the way home I get rear ended by a girl on 664 in stop and go traffic. She does not stop. I call police. Show up two hours later and she managed her daring escape at 5 miles an hour. All was not lost, got her license. She's fucked.
•Get home, drop brand new bottle of bourbon.
•Read TKP, and now this shit.

However, I have still never had a bad day in my life. I would've probably punched a baby dolphin though.

FYI my take on Pep? Thought it was a pipe dream. Move too lateral, no direct ties, etc.
Hopefully Marcus can get out of jail in time to lead us to victory.

Over and out.

Pep Hamilton would have been one of the biggest coup in VT's history. Anyone who actually thought Pep was a certainty doesn't realize that the Stanford OC job is much better than the VT one. The only reason he would be a serious candidate is if he really felt the need to live on the east coast. Obviously, Pep was intrigued, interviewed twice, but it doesn't surprise me in the least bit.

Everyone should just be glad that Beamer is doing the right thing, going through the process, and trying to find great candidates. Relax, and just know, the next OC probably won't be a sexy name, but if he can coach 1/2 as well Bud, this team will improve 10-fold.

🦃 🦃 🦃

I think the Stanford job is a good one

but not necessarily better than the VT job. But, if I'm Pep, I'm thinking that an NFL route is still very possible and the best way to do that is to stay at Stanford until Harbaugh needs an OC. Which may be in a few weeks.

Or he can hang around until a clearly better OC job opens up in college, like Bama or UGa or LSU or Texas or UF.

He doesn't NEED to take the VT job to advance his career.

From "Virginia Tech: Sources tell me former Kansas offensive coordinator Chuck Long has been involved in the Virginia Tech coaching search. Long is currently living in Norman, Okla., and assisting with his son's high school team. I am not certain if Long is the frontrunner to become the Virginia Tech offensive coordinator at this point. I have confirmed that Long has not been offered the job at this point."

I'm not 100% sold on bringing in Long as the OC (although at this point, just the thought of any changes makes me somewhat hopeful for a better 2013 season), but I wonder if Beamer is considering him as a QB coach. It would probably be a pretty attractive hire for LT3 to have a QB coach that was a collegiate star himself, coached Heisman-quality players, and has NFL experience. I get the feeling that there is a ton going on behind the scenes and so far the rumors going around probably cover less than 10% of reality. I would expect to see multiple coaching announcements in the next couple days, probably right before the Jan. 15 deadline. Disclaimer: this is all idle musings in my head. I have no information whatsoever from any source, reliable or not :)

Don't ever let the pressure exceed the pleasure. - Joe Maddon

This post really got me worried...

Not because I think Pep was the right person for the job (IMO he is). But because our perception is becoming our reality. I think we all want to believe VT is a premiere program and the OC job is one of the top in the country. The reality: it's not/we're not. I want to believe people would line up to get here...but they're not. Tony Franklin was the best Pep Hamilton was a better I'm just afraid/realizing that we will get a watered down solution. This would be along the lines of a "has been" coach (Long) an unproven assistant (Elliott) or worse (Stinespring).

I'm also afraid the real story behind all this is that CFB has set "conditions" to which a new OC must operate. The biggest of which is, here's your TE coach and recruiting coordinator. I'm guess the "big names" want to come in and set up their own system. Even if everything else was better for Pep (more money, closer to home, high profile conference, etc.), the "Stiney" factor would be enough for me to say "no thanks".

With all of that, I have a deep hope we will get an announcement in the next couple of days that will be a major coup.

...On my third keyboard this week...keep wearing out the F5 button...

We put the K in Kwality

I have learned that Pep
