Michigan's McGary and the NCAA's Draconian Bylaws

Yahoo!Sports' Dan Wetzel's column today outlines the NCAA's suspension of Michigan center Mitch McGary for one full year, following his positive test for marijuana during this year's NCAA Tournament. This all occurred despite the fact that McGary hadn't played a game in months and only suited up because Coach John Beilien hoped his presence on the bench would have a positive influence on his teammates. As a result, McGary opted to turn pro, rather than sit out an entire year because of the NCAA's admittedly overzealous regulations.

Interestingly enough, the case influenced the NCAA to lower their first time offender suspension for recreational drug use to half a season, as opposed to the full year. Yet McGary's suspension remained in full, because the revised bylaw does not go into effect until August 1.

Though not surprising, the pathetic nature of the NCAA and its ridiculous rulebook has forced a potential All-American player looking to rebuild his draft stock - and ultimately his future - to turn pro earlier than he had hoped. More egg on the face of the NCAA, yet an event that is unlikely to be a watershed moment for reform.
