David Teel penned an insightful writeup after an interview with Jonesboro hoops head man Dan Maehlman. Maehlman is McDonald's All-American wing M.J. Walker's coach, a prospect Buzzketball is well positioned to close out its already impressive 2017 class with.
Walker has 757 ties, which might be the impetus for Teel's dispatch, or it may be because the well-sourced, longtime columnist has a sense of what's to come for the Hokies (and he usually does).
"Getting to know them and watching the program — this year was the first time I watched Virginia Tech basketball, and it was pretty amazing," Maehlman said. "I definitely think there are certain systems that M.J. will fit into because of what we do here. We're a big defensive school, and my philosophies I think are very similar to what Buzz teaches. You can just tell by the way his kids play. We focus on all the small things and character."
Maehlman was quick to add that he believes Walker also would fit at Georgia Tech, Florida State or Ohio State.
"That's why it's so hard for me to tell which one stands above the rest," he said.
Georgia Tech would be home. Florida State would be close and a nod to Douglas. Virginia Tech would be a return to family roots.
"He's definitely a program changer," Maehlman said. "Wherever he goes, it's going to be a beautiful place."
