M.J. Walker's Coach "He's definitely a program changer."

David Teel penned an insightful writeup after an interview with Jonesboro hoops head man Dan Maehlman. Maehlman is McDonald's All-American wing M.J. Walker's coach, a prospect Buzzketball is well positioned to close out its already impressive 2017 class with.

Walker has 757 ties, which might be the impetus for Teel's dispatch, or it may be because the well-sourced, longtime columnist has a sense of what's to come for the Hokies (and he usually does).

"Getting to know them and watching the program — this year was the first time I watched Virginia Tech basketball, and it was pretty amazing," Maehlman said. "I definitely think there are certain systems that M.J. will fit into because of what we do here. We're a big defensive school, and my philosophies I think are very similar to what Buzz teaches. You can just tell by the way his kids play. We focus on all the small things and character."

Maehlman was quick to add that he believes Walker also would fit at Georgia Tech, Florida State or Ohio State.

"That's why it's so hard for me to tell which one stands above the rest," he said.

Georgia Tech would be home. Florida State would be close and a nod to Douglas. Virginia Tech would be a return to family roots.

"He's definitely a program changer," Maehlman said. "Wherever he goes, it's going to be a beautiful place."

sooooooo we still know nothing? back to the shoe talk it is.

I swear to drunk, I'm not God

Reading between the lines, the fact that Teel dedicated a column to an uncommitted prospect from Georgia speaks volumes to me.

I'm not gonna lie, after you said you already had an article queued up, when I logged in this morning and saw you had posted an article titled "M.J. Walker......" I thought we were about to have a very fun morning on TKP.

Guess the FAMgasm will have to wait til later

774 words and not a single mention of his shoe preference. I expect better from Teel

He's an UnderArmor kid in high school

Shit, he's going to Maryland

Also an Under Armour kid on the AAU circuit as part of Atlanta Xpress.

oh god, why do I even get my hopes up anymore?

Could anyone provide a list of our current roster (including signees) and their high school and/or AAU shoe brand affiliation? Bonus: if they are a transfer, what brand was their original college choice?

I don't have to take this abuse from you, I've got hundreds of people dying to abuse me.

Shoes

Here they are. Only one I was unable to determine was Ty Outlaw's high school, there are no visible logos in any of the pictures I could find of Person High Basketball. One other thing I hadnt realized was that Justin Bibbs and Devin Wilson came out of the same AAU program, King James. No real surprise that Nike dominates the scene but a sprinkling of Adidas and Under Armour throughout.

Bravo, man. I don't know how much time or effort it took to create, but damn, this is a level of meme commitment that I can only dream to one day achieve

KBJ and NAW coming from UA AAU programs helps ease my mind (though there is a ton of Nike on this list giving credence to some of the comments i've seen).

excellent work. thank you very much!

Are we seriously taking this seriously? Full on offseason TKP.

I think its hogwash but couldnt resist feeding the beast.

Nike just picked up a Crystal Ball on 247......nowadays HS players can just commit to a shoe brand and then let the shoe company decide what school they are going too...

At least this rules out Georgia Tech lol

12 points in 2.5 quarters. MJ, the yellow team has families.

That pic makes that defender look really bad.

The scoreboard in the background makes the defenders look even worse. Yeeesh.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

With hops like this he's more like an OverArmor guy, amirite?

Guys?

Guys....

That team sure did suck last night. They just plain sucked! I mean I've seen teams suck before, but that was the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.

New article in the AJC:

M.J. Walker's coach explains why he hasn't decided on a school yet

Of note:

Walker has four schools on his list — (Georgia) Tech, Florida State, Ohio State and Virginia Tech – and may add a fifth, UCLA. This coming weekend is the last before the end of the signing period, which ends May 17, next Wednesday.

"I don't know if he'll make that decision by then," Maehlman said. "He might go past it."

Walker, or any prospect, is not required to sign a letter of intent.

Wait so youre telling me we may have to wait even longer? I dont know if we can handle more talk about shoes, next thing you know we will be debating insoles and shoe material as a point to extract some missed info.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

may add a fifth, UCLA. This coming weekend

One more Crystal Ball for Big Baller Brand

other than transfers, I really dont understand why recruits can wait so long, while regularly admitted students had to decide by May 1st.

Regular students don't bring in millions upon millions to the school.

I was waiting for someone to post this GIF

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

Be the change you want to see

Hokies just picked up another 247 CB for Walker - this time from the site admin of 247's Kentucky site.

It would be great to get this guy, but the longer this drags out, the less optimistic I am that he'll choose the good guys. Florida State and Georgia Tech, in particular, worry me as other potential suitors, being closer to his roots. I know Buzz has a good thing going on here, but it would be a major coup to land MJ, and better yet, have him bolster our program for 3 or more years. Got my fingers crossed, though.

keep in mind that a 5-star player isn't going to publicly commit to a school that doesn't have a scholarship available, and we didn't have any scholarships available for 2017-18 until sometime in the past few days when Seth LeDay's name disappeared off the Hokiesports.com basketball roster.

Hmmm. Maybe we need a special investigator to connect these hazily alluded to dots. Who got the scoop?

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Can someone explain to me how signing works in basketball and how it varies from football? It's super uncommon that someone waits until after NSD in football (although it has happened before). Does this happen frequently in basketball, or is this just an unusual situation?
