2? When was the last time we kicked off at 2 for a game?

I also wonder if this means we'll be on TV somewhere.

It's almost like they haggled between the noon and 3 pm kick time. I guess we won? Yay?

We...um...tied?

No...1:30 would've been a tie. We won!

We put the K in Kwality

It was a nailbiter though.

Me too, but you have to admit it was the perfect response.

What gets missed on a lot of people is that the celebration was for a missed field goal and that we were going to OT

I swear to drunk, I'm not God

How could anybody miss that? He clearly wasn't celebrating us scoring any points...

The biggest con (really, the only one, I don't care about the time) is the streaming-only thing. ESPN better have figured out its issues, because that was extremely annoying on Saturday.

Extremely annoying doesn't begin to explain it. But I appreciate your attempt at playing nicely. Have a leg.

I saw a bunch of people tweeting about issues early in the game ... was there any word on what the problem was? The feed on the TVs inside Lane seemed fine, which appeared to be the ESPN stream.

People have been tweeting about WatchESPN issues for 3 weeks now, starting with the Week 0 games. At times it seems like they've made slight improvements, but with our game being completely unavailable for the first quarter and me only being able to see about 5 seconds of the UL-UNC game every minute for the first half (NOT an exaggeration)...

WatchESPN used to be my favorite way to stream live sports, but Fox and even NBC have improved their product to where it's almost imperceptible from the live TV broadcast, and ESPN has only regressed. Nothing makes sense anymore.

WatchESPN data center:

Where is Lawson?!

ESPN fired all their network engineers instead of their useless tv personas

I wasn't able to get in until about 2 minutes had ticked off the clock, I just assumed that was because everyone was trying to access all at once.

After I was connected, the quality was pretty good.

Yeah, it was just ESPN's ability to broadcast. I was trying to access it via the ESPN app on my Fire TV stick. Initially, it said the game was blacked out in our area. Then a few minutes later, "session authorization failed," then a few minutes later, some generic network error. A friend got it to work on his Android phone, but my laptop and the Fire TV failed. After exiting the app and logging back in, it eventually worked at the 12:00 point in the first quarter or so.

Had similar issues myself. Initially at the bar, they started streaming before the broadcast kicked in. But then 3:30 came and went and we were still seeing the "your event hasn't started" page. Then the feed cut out. Then the authorization errors. So I tried to login on my phone and I was dealing with endless issues and the app failing to begin the stream. I logged out, logged in... nothing. Never got it to work. Thankfully, they did at the bar, or I would have been SOL.

I and at least one other fan that I know was able to get the signal, after multiple attempts, but as soon as we attempted to cast it to a TV, the connection failed. After that, I had to reboot my device, to get the signal again. I tried 4 different devices (macbook, android tablet, ipad and android phone). Same issue with all. I eventually got it to work by getting a successful broadcast of a different game, then switch games within WatchESPN to the VT game. It was a mess.

I can't remember the exact order of events, but I started the stream before 3:30, and it had the "game is about to start" screen up. When that was still up at 3:32, I checked the radio and heard the kickoff.

I know I saw 15:00 in the 1st, but I lost the stream at least once on the Amazon box. I had to resort to my phone for a bit, but got the game back on the TV in the 1st and kept it there the rest of the game. I think I got all of the same error messages at some point.

It better because I am going to be at a wedding in Buttfuckeystown, MD.

Yes.

I'll bet I opened that stream over 100 times on Saturday looking for any sort of connection. While I usually cast the game up to my TV using chromecast/firestick, I resorted to watching the remainder of the first half from my smart phone. I didn't dare try to cast in fear of losing the 1 good stream I had found in 25min of retrying.

Go to hell, ESPN.

So this is the reason that ESPN gave me on Saturday for the streaming. I like how it went from all games to just the games on the ACC network. This is what ESPN is going to do for the ACC then we need to press for them to make it right or we just need to use this as evidence that they can't fulfill their end of the agreement to provide a reliable network.

ps. I finally signed up to TKP to share this information, just felt that it needed to get out there.

Even that is bullshit, because when we tried to get to the VT game, one time I accidentally selected IU-UVa, and it took me right to the broadcast.

That game was not on the ACC network. We were the only game on the ACC network at that time slot. There was only one other on that day, either the Wake or Cuse game. Not sure which one though.

I checked in on WF/BC, and it worked fine. I don't remember if that was on the tablet or the laptop, though.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Wake at BC (1 PM), MT State at Syracuse (3:30 PM), and Marshall at NC State (6 PM) were the other ACC Network Extra games on Saturday.

In case anyone wants to check the streams this Saturday, ACC Network Extra has Utah State at Wake (3 PM) and Central Michigan at Cuse (3:30 PM).

I was testing it in the morning and had no problem watching Tonga play Guiena in BB. Really. They were in a place that probably held 20,000 and there might of been 100 people there with the players,.

Oh yea, there was 6 minutes left in the 1st half and the score was 9-6. That some good stuff.

Where is Lawson?!

Same, and I could watch VT game on my iPad but nothing else. All games worked on all platforms.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

There might have been two Indiana/UVA streams, since it was originally scheduled for ACCNE. But I have to imagine that the streams for the games on actual TV channels were under much less stress.

Still, I've never had issues streaming a VT game, even going back to some of the ACC conference games that were put on ESPN3, and I had a cruder setup.

Welcome to TKP! Always good to see a fellow VA-to-SC-er. South Carolina's home now but gosh I miss Virginia.

"Tajh Boyd over the middle . . . and it's caught for an interception! Michael Cole, lying flat on his back, ARE YOU KIDDING???"

My issue with streaming was weird to say the least. I was able to get the game fine on my tablet, but when I tried to get it on three different laptops, I encountered the same issues everyone else got. So I watched on my tablet.

I had similar issue too. I couldn't get to load on my TV through Sling or WatchESPN, but it came up fine on my phone. I finally got it to load on WatchESPN mid way through the first.

This is very very good news for VT. Streaming only and at 2 pm. Now AP voters won't be able to see us potentially struggle against an inferior team because its not on a national network channel and they will start with the noon games that will carry them over to the 3:30 games!

I don't even know if I should put "/s" at the end of that or not

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I must be the only fan on the planet who was able to stream the Delaware game from start to finish. I used the ESPN app on Android and cast it to a smart TV.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

I also streamed the game on the Android app (finally had success about halfway through Q1) but I wasn't able to cast to my TV until late in the 2nd quarter. Prior to that, the WatchESPN app would crash on me when I'd attempt to cast.

This was my exact experience as well

I have the ESPN Android app but have not been able to figure out how to cast it to my Samsung smart tv.

I believe Samsung TVs do not support casting in the traditional sense and rely on having the app installed on the TV itself. Since there is no WatchESPN app on the TV, you cannot cast to it. That's the way it used to be anyways; not sure about newer Samsung TVs.

stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!

Get a Chromecast ($35 a wallyworld). Set up is very easy. The andriod app will have a cast icon in the toolbar on the top of the screen. click it. Tap the chromecast that you set up when the screen pops up and you should be good to go, as long as we don't have the same issues as last week.

I tried streaming it on Android, on Chrome on Linux, on Chrome on Windows, and on my Xbone. Phone started working first, but with potato quality (continuous stuttering and buffering). Linux machine started working next, with a minute or two left in the first quarter. Tried the Xbone a little later to no avail, and just left the TV input set to the Linux machine the rest of the game.

Once I got the stream to finally work, it ran just fine. But I couldn't get in until 9 minutes left in the first.

I have a Samsung Smart phone and a Samsung Smart TV. You would think they would be able to link seamlessly, but no, the SmartView function has never worked for me. Such crap...

🦃 🦃 🦃

No issue on my AppleTV. Was able to watch start to finish. Didn't try it on the FireTV though.

The thing I hate most about the streaming only games (when they actually work) is that they still cut to commercial breaks:

THERE ARE NO ADVERTISEMENTS BEING SHOWN ANYWHERE! JUST LET ME WATCH THE DAMN HUDDLE!!!

They also cut away way fast, cut back just as snap happened? Why. What were they afraid of showing?

What were they afraid of showing?

That terrible "Let's Go..." chant.

It was a catch!

If I made a funny comment I probably stole it from Reddit.

I was actually happy to see this...given the alternative was to stay with the announcers and listen to their analysis.

neat

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

No...this is neat.

Almost as weird as a 2pm Kickoff.

How is that we're always streaming only against the small schools but GT and Miami or some other ACC school somehow finds its way on my TV lineup when they play cupcakes? What I'm saying is put VT on TV dammit. No one in Virginia and North Carolina wants to watch Georgia Tech beat up on Obscure Directional State University.

I'm little surprised a RSN didn't pick it up. Ranked team against a mid major that won 10 games last year seems like something a RSN would jump on.

ECU won like 3 games last year and have been blown out twice this year, not exactly a good matchup
Duh, this is about ODU, carry on

I believe he's referring to ODU

haha yup, that was dumb, too many mediocre G5 matchups in one year

Seems like this is our first game against an FBS opponent not televised in at least a decade, but I don't know how I would determine that. This is a bit ridiculous.

Agreed, I get deleware not being on tv but this one is surprising. Wasn't long ago we were complaining about the noon timeslot ghetto for every game because our fans actually watched the games, espn should know better than to make us stream, we'll crash the damn thing

WatchESPN was horrific and I tried on Mac, Windows and Android. What a goat hump and I agree that there were WAYYYYY crappier games being televised than ours and it blows for those not able to go to ODU. Being from the 757 and having many friends who went to ODU, I am going to the game to show them around and tailgate with them. Good fanbase and I have been to several of their tailgates and games. This rivalry should be pretty good as far as fanbases go. Back to business.......WatchESPN blows donkey and we need to exit that deal asap. Come on ACC dedicated Network! Go Hokies and God Bless America on this day of rememberence!

Jeremiah 29:11 and Go Hokies!

Yeah, I tried on a variety of different devices as well with little success. My iPhone showed the stream before any of my other devices, but even that was well after kickoff and a bit iffy.

FUCCCCCCKKKK NOT THIS WATCH ESPN BULLSHIT AGAIN

Hello all you boys and girls I'd like to take you to the inside world It's quite an irregular place to be But never fear you're safe with me. Well maybe

I'll take it...means I don't have to wake up at the crack of dawn to drive up!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

2pm is a weird time but honestly a pretty good spot for folks coming to the game. Just enough time to get a tailgate lunch in before heading in and folks from Richmond and DC/Charlotte can still make it a day trip if they want. And honestly not being nationally televised for this one might be good, because its a "should-win" for us and if we struggle but get the win we still want the WVU game to be the biggest national perception leading into the Clemson game, especially if that means we get Gameday to come.

So what happened here? It has been listed on TV as a 3:30 kick of CBS Sports Network all of last week. Wtf.

Edit - NVM, my brain registered ECU and ODU as being the same thing. But I second everyone's thoughts: the streaming ACC Network/WatchESPN is horrible.

Back in the day, I remember having several 2:00 kick offs. TV was pretty limited to the big name schools, or regional carriers, like Raycom. We were independent, so our exposure was usually due to playing someone like FSU or WVU. A 2:00 start was not bad, especially later in the season. It was warmer by game time.

On the bright side, hopefully 2018 will see improved streaming offerings from ESPN. Parent company Disney recently bought a large portion of what used to be MLB.tv Advanced Media, a streaming platform that has been technically sound for a long time. Disney has recently announced pulling all of their media from Netflix soon (not sure when), which points strongly towards their own new streaming service. I'm hopeful that includes WatchESPN form a technical standpoint because it really needs an overhaul, and improved servers given the number of games they stream every Saturday live.

There's a small chance that it could lead to WatchESPN becoming a standalone service with a monthly sub, but if it's an improved streaming product, I'm not sure many people will complain too much at $20/month.

a streaming platform that has been technically sound for a long time.

WatchESPN was technically sound until they mucked with it recently.

Disney has recently announced pulling all of their media from Netflix soon (not sure when),

2019.

which points strongly towards their own new streaming service.

More than point, they've already announced a Disney streaming service and an ESPN streaming service. ESPN is expected to start next spring.

There's a small chance that it could lead to WatchESPN becoming a standalone service with a monthly sub,

They'll probably go with the HBO model and have two streaming services. One that is standalone, and one that goes along with your cable subscription.

Still, based on last week's shitstream, I am not in any hurry to go exclusively with streaming. It works out that my cable contract runs through 2019 anyway, so I have some time to see them work out some of the kinks.

The best way to get good information online is to post incomplete/inaccurate information and wait for a response. Thanks for shedding more light on the issue without me having to Google Fu my way through it and waste more time NOT on TKP.

MLB.tv has outclassed ESPN's streaming service for a while IMO. I've had both since 2009, and MLB.tv has always been the more reliable option. Granted, it's a max of 16 games at one time, and they're likely more uniform than CFB media streams/rooms/equipment, but still.

If they offer a $15-$20/month streaming option with improved infrastructure to support it, I will be very happy. That said, even HBO has had issues with large numbers of concurrent users on their new streaming platform (see GoT S7 premier). I'm hopeful that Disney will throw enough resources behind it to be good, since live sports is really the only reason anyone that I know ever watches ESPN. That and some College GameDay occasionally while early-morning tailgating.

**EDIT** I have been streaming and OTA TV since 2009. The biggest issue has been MLB playoff games. If the Rangers make it to the playoffs, I usually had go to a bar to watch them. The last 2-3 years have been fine with FOX OTA and TBS livestream though. WatchESPN has been sufficient for the big games. It's not perfect, but I pay $45/month for cable internet (CHS, SC - was $100/mo with Shentel in Fairlawn, VA) while several people in the family share a Comcast login for HBO and ESPN and what not. Can't complain too much while some people are paying $120/month for cable TV.

I have only limited experience with the mlb.tv folks but it sucked. They took over the NHL streaming during midseason a couple years ago and it was horrible. Tons of blackouts originally and then lots and lots of buffering at the end of season when everyone was watching games during the playoff race. I don't see the addition of those guys as an upgrade.

ESPN streaming has been very good for me until Saturday's game. I guess we'll see how this weekend goes. This is probably another case of past performance does not guarantee future returns.

I'm ok with the kickoff time. Not a nooner but early enough that it's not the kid's bedtime when we get back to the hotel.

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

So...just to educate the old geezer in the crowd: why the disdain for noon kickoffs?

Less time for pregame action. Plus alot of sun in your face during the game.

Plus alot of sun in your face during the game.

If only someone would invent something you could put over your eyes to shade them from the sun. Some type of glasses perhaps.

I like to be able to sleep in after getting into Roanoke after midnight on Friday, sit down for breakfast, and make it to the stadium before Sandman. Tailgating time is also nice!

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

Nooners=drinking very quickly, crashing just as quickly when I get home so late games are a blur. And yes, the sun is a strong mother hugger.
Night games=good buildup, plenty of time to party and migle, and best of all, gives great national exposure and the stadium is often at its best and loudest at night. Major con is getting home at like midnight or later. But holy mackerel, some folks just don't know the correct amount of party for an entire day...I have been apart of this crowd a few times in my day.
3:30 kicks=juuuust the right amount of party of my body and late in the season, games end under the lights and one can get home or back to a hotel at a reasonable hour.

I could see Whit going with the earlier time to accommodate fans who do the full there-and-back drive on Saturday since Clemson is the following weekend. That way they can rest more on Sunday to prepare for a long Saturday the next weekend between Game Day coming and a 7:00 pm nationally televised game.

Don't jinx us

Hello all you boys and girls I'd like to take you to the inside world It's quite an irregular place to be But never fear you're safe with me. Well maybe

Here here, I have a friend who is supposed to come in for the Clemson game from Columbus Ohio, but his ex-wife (OSU fan) moved his daughters birthday party to that Saturday morning at 10 am. He needs a night game to be able to attend the party, then haul ass down the road in time to get to Blacksburg for the game.

Clemson game would make a hell of a birthday party. Just sayin'.

Which is exactly why I'll be driving in from Nashville for the game. Birthday is Fri 9/29.

Virginian by Birth, Hokie by Choice

Wow. That is downright wicked of her.

Yeah, that was my opinion as well. Who ever heard of moving to the party to the weekend before the birthday instead of the weekend after it?

We just scheduled our daughters birthday party a week early to coincide with the Hokies bye week. Priorities.

I still see a malicious move by the ex-wife/OSU fan through my O&M glasses.

My kid's birthday is the week between ODU and Clemson. The party is on the 23rd.

While the upside to planning the birth of kids during football season is getting baby leave to cover the entire season, the downside is that the birthdays then fall during football season. And the oldest's falls late enough in September that it's past the first three weeks of games that get scheduled in the summer.

I will be on a plane attempting to stream the game via Southwest's in flight internet. Wish me luck....

Good Luck!!! Most airplane wifi I have used blocked any sort of video streaming.

I was able to watch Bristol practice sessions back in the spring on a jet's wifi with no interruption, but they also had FS1 for free, so, maybe just an isolated incident.

Maybe they're going with 2:00 to throw off any Vick protesters.

What time does everyone plan to arrive and set up their tailgates?

This will be my first game setting up my own mini-tailgate as an alum. For my past trips back for games after graduating, I just hit up the bars downtown before games.

7:30

God bless you.
