2018 Golf Thread

I'm currently on a Rory high after the clinic he put on today, so I thought it'd be nice to have a place to discuss the last half of the 2018 tour. It's been a pretty exciting last few weeks after Phil won, JT continued his rise to the #2 WGR, and numerous events have gone to a playoff. Of course, I'm a massive Rory sucker, so I'd love to see him get his career grand slam this year. Rickie is due for his first, but he hasn't looked as deadly as some others. Jordan is always a favorite at Augusta, but he's having some very out of character putting woes.

Oh, and not to mention a certain Big Cat is back. Plus there's a pretty big tournament coming up in two weeks.

So let's talk golf!

Thought Tiger had more in it today. But happy with Rory taking it. I am very excited for the Masters all the sudden and wish I had tickets again.

All right. While we're still under a caution, I want you to go back out on that track and hit the pace car.

Hit the pace car?

What for?

Because you've hit every other goddamned thing out there, I want you to be perfect!

His post round interview said it all saying that one hole was "just a 315/320 yard carry" like it's nothing. He's back.

Yep. Rickie has the tools but hasn't really figured out how to finish in the big ones.

I thought this was going to be good news, or at least news, about VT golf.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Johnson Wagner sitting at 403 in world ranking.

Brendon DeJonge is unranked.

We put the K in Kwality

Wagner will be in the secondary PGA event next week (Punta Cana). He needs a good finish there - he usually excels at events like that one. Hopefully he can get his tour card back this year.

De Jonge has fallen off the planet. Played in some Web.com tour events in Jan. but nothing since.

EDIT: De Jonge is also in the Punta Cana event - hope they both do well.

De Jonge has basically no status other than
Monday qualifying and sponsor exemptions ...he played on the west coast earlier this year and didn't make the cut...his career is basically over

...and just when I declare De Jonge's career over, he shoots a 66 in the first round of the Punta Cana Championship (the "other" PGA Tour event this week due to the WGC Match Play). He's currently T-2, if he wins it he's got a two year exemption on the PGA Tour. Let's go Brendon!

Well done Brendon!
(My only fear is his record on Sundays...)
Go luck to you Hokie!!!!!

Watch out for Tommy Fleetwood at the masters

Tiger woods is now the masters favorite at +700...let that sink in...he hasn't won any tournament in close to 5 years. Rory at 10-1.

Fleetwood will be dangerous this season, but he hasn't been as good as I expected he would. An on-form Rory will be tough to beat. I don't see Tiger winning though. Until he gets his driver worked out.

Just a friendly reminder that betting odds are drawn so as to maximize betting while minimizing risk for the book. Smart bet is not on Tiger, but then again not everyone who gambles is smart.

The old betting maxim is "the masses are asses"

Rors put on a clinic on the back nine yesterday.
But looking at the stats, it was all 72 holes. Nuts what he did overall.

Rickie has it for 54 holes. Just not sure he'll break out and get a Major. Love him and root for him, but it's just close...but no cigar for him.
Tiger is back...for 63 holes. Yes, he ripped off a few birds starting the back 9 yesterday, but like last week, he hit the wall. Maybe the next couple of weeks off will give him the reserve (as well as Augusta being Augusta) to finish strong at the Masters. But that's a heck of a walk for 4 days. I picture him on the first page Saturday night, but maybe not finishing strong Sunday.

The latest issue of golf digest had 9 pages of tour confidential, players/coaches/analysts, talking anonymously about mostly Tiger. But there were some tidbits about other golfers. One section of Rory talked how Rory was "not even close" to figuring out his putting woes. Alas, he switches to a 34.25" blade putter from a 33" mallet and starts putting black out. I don't think it was all equipment but sometimes a change can lead to a change in between the ears.

Rickie needs to stop wearing orange on Sunday. That's got to be it.

Just shows how fickle putting truly is.
I was close to playing in college, but the putting is what really kept me out.Had I been able to shave 3-4 putts a round off the two state championship rounds my senior year, might have been a totally different story for me. But I'm good with it. I'm a Hokie and happy for that fact. If the state tourney had been different, I wouldn't be a Hokie, most likely.

So maybe Rickie needs to pick up the putter Rors put down. That 84" blade Fowler has just looks odd to me.

I've gotten my putting average down to about 1.7 putts per hole. I've gotten a lot better at reading then I've found the, in my opinion, best putter. I'm using an O-Works #7 with a SuperStroke Pistol 2.0 with counter core. With that, I've found my putting stroke is much more stable and I can make good contact with the ball. I'm virtually automatic within 6-8 feet now unless there is a ridiculous break.

What's been really interesting is watching Jordan Spieth. He ditched his 009 for like one round last year in an effort to mix things up.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

I think 'putts per hole' is a misleading statistic in determining putting proficiency. If your approach shots are ending up just off the green and you're pitching it up close to the hole, then you're going to make more 'one-putts'. If you're hitting the green in regulation, you're often going to be farther away from the hole, thus more 'two putts'.

If you're virtually automatic from 6-8', you're putting very well.

I tend to agree, but when I have gotten that down from 2.0-2.1 putts per hole while hitting a few more greens I can see some improvement.

Tiger has me watching non-majors for the first time in years. Rory was amazing yesterday.

Anything on Drew Weaver?

Sooo are we going to talk about Rory's take on banning liquor and restricting alcohol sales at events. Seems like it would hurt every professional golfers purse.

I think something needs to be done. It's gotten out of hand. Rory has spoken up because someone said something about Erica, and I don't fault him at all for that. I would speak up too if someone said something about my wife. We also don't need to hear guys yell mashed potato and bababooey after every drive. I love how golf is though, with it being extremely quiet then the crowd swells to a roar when a putt drops or someone sticks one. But the mashed potatoes and crap is just unoriginal.

I'm not sure how you handle it, but many other sports restrict alchohol sales. MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, hell even MLS all do. Maybe you just sell beer and ditch cocktails. I'm not sure.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think Barstool sports is to blame for a lot of this. They condone this style of behavior, and it has spread to even casual rounds. I can't stand that company.

Not sure it would affect purses. That money is coming from the sponsors and the TV deals. Could hurt the local charitable donations, but those can be made up with additional drives and other efforts.

The yelling after every shot is stupid. Tiger missed a 30 footer yesterday, and after a few seconds, while he's walking up to mark, someone yells "It's OK Tiger, we still love you." Shut up dufus. Just be quiet. No need to yell. No need to say anything. Just be there and spectate. Can't confirm it's from that guy being deep in the cups, but I'm sure he wasn't flat line sober. Respekt the game.

Rory was the best player in the world on the back 9 Sunday. If he plays like that at the Master's, nobody is beating him, not Tiger, not Dustin Johnson...

I hate all the Tiger watch, but it is definitely more interesting when hes playing well. If him and Rory keep playing like they are and some other players step up, every tournament is going to be fun to watch.

My issue with Tiger is you don't get to see the other golfers. They showed 4 guys on the back nine yesterday. That was it. Yes, he moves the needle, but there are other guys grinding and finishing ahead of him as well. Show them some love, and give them some air time.

The TV coverage in general yesterday was horrific. NBC bombarded viewers with commercials. I would say I can't wait for CBS to be back but they are just as bad. At least in less than three weeks we get a Sunday at Augusta with Uncle Verne.

In my opinion, they had plenty of time while Tiger was down to get their air time. If someone deserves more they would give it. I watched every single Rory shot yesterday as well.

They show the golfers who have a realistic chance of winning. Yes, they show Tiger quite often when he is not in position to win, but these past couple weeks he has been in the thick of it. He was making quite a push early on the back nine, before stumbling. They know why people are watching, they know that numbers are up because Tiger is playing well. Give the people what they want! I always watch the majors, and rarely make time to watch non-majors, but I've been watching the past few weeks!

If you watch any golf channel under card tournaments or early rounds, you realize they can cover way more than they do. It has been very bad the past few years with them trying to crown a "new Tiger".

'95 @UVA, '95 Sugar Bowl, '96 @Miami, '99 flip, '03 v Miami, '05 Bourbon St., '09 Coale, '14 @OSU

Agreed. I should have rephrased. I don't mind watching tiger. I like watching tiger especially when he's in contention. But the over exposure gets old. Maybe it will back down after a little while.

I'm not really a Henrik stenson fan so it didn't bother me that much, but I barely saw him Saturday and early in his round Sunday.

Don't get me wrong. I was definitely watching last week as tiger made his run before Paul Casey won it.

I feel like Stenson is either loved or hated. I think he's a good dude. Love his fairway metals play.

Match Play groups were set last night.

Personally, I've got DJ, Kuch, Fleetwood, Oosthuizen, Matsuyama, Hoffman, Finau, Reed, JT, Woodland, Casey, Schauffele, Rory, Cabrera Bello, and Rahm all winning their groups. Group 7 sticks out to me as the hardest with Sharma catching fire as of late. Group 13 looks sneak tough to me too.

I know this thread is about professional golf, but I just wanted to say that i'm playing golf for the first time ever this Friday. Been to the range a few times, but that's about it. Anyone have tips for a n00b?

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

The same thing I always have to tell myself out on the course: don't try to do too much.

Nice easy, controlled swings.

Try to make smart golf choices too. "I think I can go over this bunker, hit off that tree, roll down that gulley and it'll feed straight to the pin" is not the way to play lol. Just remember, what you see the guys and gals do on tv, you can't do. They get paid a couple dollars to this.

And try to stay light on yourself. You're gonna hit some awful shots (just like everybody else does), just laugh that shit off and go hit the next shot. It's a game that'll make you wanna drive the cart into a pond at some point, but ultimately it's fun as hell.

Oh, and beers. And perhaps a cigar or a good can of dip helps as well.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I bought over $1000 in golf clubs just so I could have another reason to drink beer and have a can of dip. (Sorta /s). This is solid advice.

Jokes aside, none of us are going pro at golf. Relax, have fun, and enjoy the challenge.

Edit to add: there's a lot of unwritten (and some written) etiquette rules involved with golf. Might serve you well to do a quick Google search for top ten golf etiquette rules or something. Some people are a bit OCD about this shit.

Honestly as long as you're silent and motionless (AKA Scott Stadium) while others nearby are hitting and Don't step in peoples lines on the green you'll be fine.

Only other tip I can give etiquette-wise is to get to your ball decently quickly. Never ever rush your swing, setup, or time at the ball but the worst slow players are the ones that take four minutes to walk from one side of the green to the other. Especially if you may be hitting a lot of shots which we all do when we're just starting out.

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

LPT: Take a lesson from a pro before you develop bad habits.

That being said...
Bring the club straight back before you bring it up (put a golf tee like 6 inches behind the ball and go over it before bringing the club up.)
Keep your left arm straight when bringing the club back.
First move from the top of your swing should be your left hip followed by your arms
Look at the ball until you are sure you hit it.
Follow through with your chest facing down the hole and the head of your club pointed at the right. (if you are right handed)
I can try to elaborate more if anything is unclear. Also, youtube has some great instructional videos. Lastly, if you get too frustrated, just pick up your ball, have a beer, and play the next hole. Golf is supposed to be fun, and people forget that way too often.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Thanks for the tips! I've been watching youtube videos on proper technique, but i really want a professional lesson some time soon. I feel like I'm hitting the irons pretty straight right now, but I slice like every other shot with my driver. Thankfully we are playing captain's choice Friday, so it should be a good learning experience.

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

Pay attention to others while they aren't hitting as well. Like moving towards the hole, being ready to hit, staying quiet while others are swinging. Some people are crazy about etiquette...you'll figure them out quickly. But keeping the pace of play up is a good one to learn as well. I've seen people play in 3 hours shooting 100. And others play in 5 hours shooting par. Give me the 3 hour round all day.

Amen. Played at Tobacco Road a few weekends ago (during all the winds) and with literally just our group it took us around 5.5hrs. We were beatttt.

Fairways were wet due to heavy rains during the week leading up to it, so we didn't get a fair shake there. Winds were up in the 40mph range so that only made everything that much harder, and I mean everything. Putts were being moved by the wind lol the greens are lightening fast but read pretty true. There's sooo much waste area. A crazy amount. Looks like a course that should be in like arizona or something like that. Definitely up there along with Primland as the toughest course I've ever played. But still with all the challenges it's a fun course. We got to play Dormie and 7Lakes as well. 7Lakes is the closest thing to a "normal course" of the three.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Any idea what the greens were rolling? We played TPC Myrtle Beach last summer and they were rolling 10.5. Felt like putting on linoleum. It was an awesome experience though.

No idea, sorry. We played TPC last April during a bachelor golf trip and that place is niiiice. Very enjoyable course. Neat seeing all the DJ stuff too.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I've played there a few times and honestly it's one of the most fun courses I've ever played. It has its challenges but they are almost entirely visual. If you're playing the right tees for your game there are not a ton of forced carries that aren't easily managed. 18 being an exception. Sure there is a ton of shit off the fairways but the fairways are massively wide, even when you can't see them off the tee. Play smart and don't try to overpower the course (only 6,500 yards from the tips) and it's not too difficult to score.

All said and done it's my favorite course in NC behind Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 8

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

One of these days when my wife makes a lot of money I will play pinehurst. I am going to play Torrey Pines this summer, however. We're flying to San Diego to cover a wedding so I'm going to play the North course. I know the south course is superior but everything I read said north is a better value and more enjoyable since it's easier. I don't want to get my ass kicked terribly either.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

It's been a bit since I've played TR, but I loved it. Only prob are the visuals...very few targets to lock in on to pick an aiming point. Lots of visual noise. If you can focus, pick out a spot, and hit it in that general vicinity, you can handle TR. Just enjoy the bits in between. It's unlike anything else you'll see in the Mid-Atlantic.

And the greens are generally set up in pods. Large, but have different sections to it. Get it close to the proper section and you can get up and down. Miss by a section or two and your work is in front of you.

I was lucky enough to play it with a buddy that was a Campbell at the time, and TR was their home course. After getting the "I'm gonna pummel this course because it's only 6500 from the tips" attitude, I settled in and finished with 10 straight pars. Its there in front of you...just hit it consistently and you can score on it.

With the driver and woods, you want more of a low sweeping motion. On the driving range before you play take some very easy swings with your driver and you will be surprised how far they go. A lot easier to hit straight. If you are still slicing it, try bringing the club tighter to your body on your back swing and swing wider when striking the ball if that makes sense. Still just remember to use and nice smooth swing. Also, the longer the club the further forward you place the ball in your stance. Driver is usually at or in front of your front foot.

Excellent slice advice. I've never heard it explained better. Leg

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

It's the only way I have ever been able to correct my slice. Every time it starts to come back, I just remember the most important thing is to slow my swing down and focus on the swing path more than power. You just have to let the shaft and head do the work. I have also heard to ensure your swing path is inside-out. Bring it back inside and swing out/wide. Adjust the amount you move it inside and out until the ball flies straight.

My golf pro told me to act like I'm grabbing a bag of mulch from a pick up truck bed and throw it down the fairway. The truck is to the right in your golf stance. Helps me keep the swing from getting too loose and increase my body turn. Funny how everyone has an analogy. I just think technically speaking this was the most succinct I've heard and it's easy to visualize.

make your club decisions/selections while others are playing and be ready when its your turn

if you are the worst player in your group, you'll be hitting first all day. be ready to go and hit the club you are most comfortable with...focus on direction more so than distance

if you hit a bad shot, focus on where the ball goes. don't look away before the ball stops and don't bitch and cuss. no one wants to hear it and everyone hates looking for a lost ball

don't talk while others are hitting.

on and around the green, don't walk between anyone's golf ball (or marker) and the hole

if it's a fundraiser, buy a lot of extra shots. use them on the green. that way, you are more likely to...

make a couple putts for your teammates. they will love you for it.

if you can't hit a driver, leave it in the car...seriously. don't even make it an option. tee off with a fairway wood or hybrid. if you put a reasonably playable ball in the fairway, your team will love you and it will take a little pressure off everyone else. in most scrambles you have to take at least one tee shot from everyone in the group. you need to give them as many opportunities as possible even if the ball doesn't go real far

swing tip 1. when you are standing over the ball, focus on the leading edge of the ball, not the trailing edge. envision hitting the back side of the front edge of the ball. when practicing, you can even put a tee in FRONT of the ball by a few inches. try to let the club pass through that tee. 99.99% of beginners and weekend warriors release the club too soon, not too late.

swing tip 2. if you are right handed keep your right elbow in contact with your ribs on the right side on the down swing (practice the towel/glove under your armpit thing).

grip tip (for a righty). slightly strong left hand, neutral right hand

good luck and have fun!

Great pointers. Thanks!

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

It's probably best to play mid-week somewhere easier for your first round...there can be a lot of pricks on a golf course that flip their lid over the slightest breach of etiquette, most of which you won't know about or remember all of them your first time. Can ruin the experience...even if you're playing with a bunch of your buddies. The fewer people on the course, the better experience you'll have the first few times. I learned to play over the summer at the Tech course and it was great...almost nobody around and it was $7 a round back in the mid 90s.

That said, don't even focus on your score (if you even bother to keep it), if you can hit one memorable shot it'll be totally worth it. Have fun out there!

It's a very casual work outing with a lot of other beginners. I think the main objective is to drink as much beer as possible haha

Wow! These videos are awesome. Thanks for the suggestion!

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

His swing may not be suggested as one to imitate (hes a flexibility freak like Dustin Johnson), but his pace, swing speed and just general smoothness is at least a mental image that helps.

A lot of people try to go out and kill the ball, but they dont realize the harder you swing, the more tight your muscles are and actually end up swinging slower. Fred Couples is a long hitter and he looks like hes just out there hanging out, swinging with ease.

He does a drill which, may help more after lessons and getting the structure of the swing down, but in his warm-ups I read he regularly tries to hit a full swing driver only 150 yards. If youve ever tried it, youll be surprised how hard it is to hit a driver that short, you really have to try to swing with zero effort.

The Golf channel had a thing on Bobby Jones swing where someone back in the day calculated his arm speed and it was only slightly quicker than just lifting his hands above his head and dropping them limp. Thats how loose his muscles were in his swing.

Dress good, play good. Wear the proper clothes: khaki pants/shorts, performance collared shirt, normal round bill hat. It comes across respectful of the game and the course.

As far as playing, don't get frustrated and give up. You're going to mess up quite a few shots and that's ok. Just let it go, focus, and enjoy your time outside on hopefully a nice day.

Anybody played the courses up near Tech in the last year? It's been a couple years since I've gotten to play up there but I used to play Auburn Hills a bit when I was in school

I played Auburn a few times over the summer and it's my favorite course close to Tech. The Meadows is another option, but there's a reason the cost to play there is so cheap...

If you are able to drive a little further, Draper Valley out in Pulaski County is an excellent course to play. I hope to play the Pete Dye River Course one day this summer. Blue Hills, Ole Monterrey, and Botetrout Country club in the Roanoke area are also great courses to play.

I played it on Friday a couple of times and it was $80 or close to it. Usually around the end of September so it was typically a bit chilly first thing in the morning.

PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic -- Tony Romo fell apart on the back nine and made his PGA Tour debut with a 5-over 77 in the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship.

No surprise here, but Tony Romo choked in his debut. 14 shots behind the leader.

I will say this...of all the "celebrity/athlete" exemptions into tournaments, Romo prob has the best game for it. He's played in US Open qualifiers and other high level tournaments. And you know he's playing for some cabbage in the summer when he tees it up. (I know, I know...$500 aint nothin to him, but its the principle.) He's a legit scratch golfer. And is getting smoked. That's how good these guys are...and this is a second tier event with the top tier guys in Austin. It's true. These guys ARE good.

(And a quick math clerical note...he basically shot his cap today on that course. Even more impressive by the other guys.)

Which do you consider the best, the Open or THE Open? (PGA is 100% last)

US Open and its not even close

Facts don't care about your feelings

THE Open. Especially this year. It has has the best finishes the past few seasons as well. Last year we got Kuch vs. Spieth until went Spieth went into god mode. I don't know that we will ever see a finishing performance like that again. The year before was the duel between Phil and Henrik. The year before there was a three way playoff.

Carnoustie is going to be blast too. I hope it is absolutely brutal.

I also think the PGA is underrated. Maybe I'm biased because I was there last year, but I really enjoy it. I would rank them The Open, Masters, then depending on the course... PGA then US Open. Erin Hills just wasn't hard enough last season. If they make Shinnecock harder than Erin Hills and we see it get tougher on the guys it'll go to third.

I don't know about y'all, but this whole Masters week thing is making me a little Itchy. I wanna go back...

All right. While we're still under a caution, I want you to go back out on that track and hit the pace car.

Anyone get out to play this weekend? It was a beautiful weekend for golf. We played 18 at Poplar Grove in Amherst. Such a gorgeous course.

Played all weekend at Olde Mill (loooove that course). Friday was ok, little chilly at times. Got in around 30-32 holes that day. Saturday was the most miserable round I've ever played. Never got out of the mid 30s and misting the entire time. Sunday there was about 2in of snow on the ground, so we went home.

But seriously, highly recommend going there if you never have.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I played Olde Mill back in high school regionals. We teed off on number 10, 40 degrees and 40 mile an hour wind blowing right in our face. Needless to say none of us made it across the water.

One more day folks.

TKP Poll - Best store to get golf clothing? Specifically, golf shorts that I don't swamp ass through?

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

I love my adidas golf shorts. Plenty of online sites, and even ebay (new) have them at decent prices. Rock Bottom Golf, Golfsmith, The Golf Warehouse, 3 balls, etc...

And get some good under armour or the like boxer briefs. boxer jocks are great for walking 18.

Johnson Wagner is Taylor made. And I believe our golf team is Taylor made to an extent. They were with Adidas not long ago as TMAG. You're fine. And if you look, you can actually find Adidas gear w VT logos that aren't rogue.

I've gotten Adidas and Nike golf clothing at Ross and Marshall's. You'll pay a LOT less.

This this this. I've gotten multiple polos from Ross. I also have four or five pairs of Nike golf shoes from Burlington. They usually get previous year's overstock and sell them for $20. I have a pair of Lunar Control 4s, Air Max 90s, Flyknit Elites, and FI Impacts, all of which I've bought from there.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I enjoy the girl in the background getting the hell out of the way, even though she's completely out of the way. Sir Charles is the only golfer to ever dance a jig in the middle of a golf swing. Can you believe he used to be a single digit handicap?

I've heard from people in the business that the swing you see on TV is just for TV. He actually has a decent swing, just has fun laughing at himself.

Rip his freaking head off!

Awesome! I have a VT head cover for my driver and a VT golf towel hanging off my bag at all times.

Yeah I've got a VT headcover for my hybrid and a VT towel.

Funny story about the towel, played with a douche UVA fan one day last summer. He notices my towel and says "you've got something on your towel." I say yeah that's success. He says "oh success? How many national championships do y'all have. Do you remember the second round of the NCAA tournament?" My immediate response was yes I do remember, UVA got curb stomped by Florida.

To this day, I believe his ignorant miserable shit talking is the reason UVA lost to UMBC. I would love to play with him again now, but he was a total asshole ignoring his UVA homerism. Always tried to correct you, claimed he got a hole in one on a par 4, one upped everything.

Inquiring minds want to know...did you take his money on the golf course?

Guess I'm worse. Have 4 VT headcovers, towel, umbrella, tees and bag.

We put the K in Kwality

I just have the bag. Used to have a Hokie Bird head cover but I got it before club makers started making half liter drivers and it doesn't even fit my 3 metal anymore.

I will likely also be rockin' a VT golf shirt.

Johnson Wagner is ON FIRE! -5 on 3 holes including back-to-back eagles. He's solo 1st at the moment. He must be a member at Quail Hollow since he resides in Charlotte. Let's GO HOKIES!!!!

Dang.

I did a little research, and here's what's crazy about that number - he's won 3 tournaments as a pro, and the prize money from just those three has accumulated almost 25% of his career earnings ($2,664,000).

Insert "Second place is first loser gif."

He made a cool $148k just today lol

Johnson Wagner just dropped a 90+ foot bunker shot in for eagle. He's -5 on the tournament. Good showing for Johnson.

Considering going on a weekend golfing trip with some buddies from school this summer. Anyone have any suggestions on places to go to in/around Virginia?

"It's a miracle in Blacksburg, TYROD DID IT MIKEY, TYROD DID IT!"

If you're willing to Pay a good amount The Homestead (in VA) has some good courses and lots of other shit to do. Same with Pinehurst in NC (although that one is almost entirely golf and food)

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

Between the Homestead, Birdwood, Spring Creek, Royal New Kent, and Kingsmill you could do a little I-64 tour with some nice courses. Homestead a little far out.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

If you want to stay in VA go to Williamsburg. Just got back from a buddies trip down there and we had a blast.

Ford's Colony is a semi-private club with 3 18-hole courses. We played the Blackheath Course on Friday and really enjoyed it.

We played both 18 hole courses at Williamsburg National on Saturday and it was perfect. Both courses were enjoyable and in good shape and they had a nice little patio area on the back of the clubhouse where we got some sandwiches and a pitcher of beer between 18s.

We also played Viniterra on the way home Sunday. It's a challenging but fun track.

I'd say we got a good value for what we played but if you're looking for a little more you can always play Golden Horseshoe and Kingsmill. Kiskiack also looks great. Williamsburg is definitely your best bet if you want to stay in one place in VA.

Just a heads up, Johnson Wagner is teeing it up this weekend in the AT&T Byron Nelson at the new Trinity Forest Golf Club. As of this posting he is 3 under thru 15 holes.

Does anyone know his tour status? Does he have a tour card or is he playing these on sponsor exemptions?

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

He has his card, but is 140th on the list. So he gets into the open events when he applies, for the most part.

He finished -4 today which is good for T12. Brendon de Jonge is also in the field but is struggling at +1 through 11. Wagner, with a top 10 finish would be in the top 125, however he needs to play well the rest of the year to regain full status on the tour.

Bumping this because fellow Hokie Mark Lawrence Jr., who was a semifinalist in the US Amateur, is competing in the US Open Sectionals today. Scoring hasn't updated for him. There are 53 guys competing for four spots.

Elsewhere, the Columbus sectional is brutal.

EDIT: Johnson Wagner is qualifying in New Jersey. Five spots for 81 players. He is +1 so far.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

All the Sectionals look brutal today. With the recent weather, courses have to be playing LONG.
I know a few at Woodmont and one in Columbus. Unless they crank it up they'll have a cool story...

Mark is +1 thru 9.
