No. 13 Virginia Tech (17-4, 7-4 ACC) hosts Syracuse (14-8, 5-6 ACC) in Cassell), at 7 p.m. Thursday night. Fans can watch the game live on ACC Network Extra (ACCNX) through the ESPN app with Bailey Angel and Mack McCarthy on the call.
Syracuse looks to bounce back after Sunday's 79-67 home loss to Louisville. Dyaisha Fair, reigning Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player of the Week, had 19 points in the loss while Georgia Woolley led the Orange with 20 points off the bench. Fair earned ACC Player of the Week honors after averaging 27.5 points per game in a 1-1 week for the Orange, scoring a season-high 36 points and turning over the ball zero times with a program record-tying eight threes against Virginia.
The Orange are 0-3 against nationally ranked opponents including close battles with No. 8 NC State and No. 7 Notre Dame, 72-56. The Hokies lost to ND 63-52. Syracuse lost to Louisville 86-77; the Hokies beat Louisville 81-79. Both teams lost to Duke. Syracuse won at Clemson, the Hokies lost.
The Orange are not a particularly good three point shooting team; but Fair made 8 against LOLUVA in their last outing, while scoring 36 points. If someone (Amoore or King) can slow Fair down, the Orange may struggle to keep up with the Hokies. Or she may wear herself out trying top keep up with Amoore.
This is a game the Hokies should win comfortably. The Orange don't really have anyone to match up with Kitley. This would be a great game to see her be a more physical presence underneath; play through the smaller player guarding her to get the layup and the foul. Send a message to the rest of the ACC that she can play that game.
The Orange have 10 players averaging 10 or more minutes per game. This would be a good game for Coach Brooks to get more minutes for the bench players. The Hokies have 7 games left: Syracuse tonight, NC State twice, Duke, UNC, FSU and Ga Tech. GTech is the only expected win after Syracuse. All the other games are going to be very competitive. Coach Brooks needs to rest the starters as much as possible to get ready for Murders Row.
