College GameDay is Headed to Blacksburg for Virginia Tech vs. Clemson

The Hokies will play host to ESPN's traveling pregame college football show.

They're comin' to your CITAY!

ESPN announced College GameDay would broadcast live from Blacksburg, VA on September 30 prior to Virginia Tech's showdown against Clemson.

Per Wikipedia (I know), GameDay last set up shop in Blacksburg in 2007 for Tech vs. East Carolina. The Hokies have previously appeared on GameDay 14 times, and hosted 5 times. Overall, Tech is 4-9 (plus one cancelation) in those games. GameDay's sixth trip to Blacksburg will feature Lee Corso's 300th headgear selection.

BUZZ WILLIAMS FOR GAMEDAY PICKER

Frank!

We put the K in Kwality

FRANK BEAMER OR BUST.

Drink

We put the K in Kwality

Do I have to drink if it was an actual tie though?

I mean, I'm already drinking...

We put the K in Kwality

Could he actually be a guest picker if he's on the committee?

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Vick, per David Teel he will be in attendance for the game.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

The Ron Mexico jersey will be trying to track down Vick

The Dude Abides

can he be a guest picker if he has ties to Fox??? idk how that works...if that has any bearing on it whatsoever

Verne Lundquist was the guest picker on GameDay the weekend of his final SEC game last year.

I think that's special and different

James Hetfield is rumored to be there as the guest picker

What's
Important
Now

He's actually going to lead the 4th "Let's go, Hokies!" Chant

Buzz has a huge recruiting weekend, with two of our top target on campus next weekend, I wonder if he would decline the opportunity.

I say this knowing nothing about the actual process but screw that, invite them out to be a part of it while he's on. No way that hurts his efforts

It's a celebration bitches!

IT'S LIT, FAM. What I wouldn't give to be there.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Personal sign idea.... "Sorry Jess, I can't make it to your wedding in Charlottesville this evening."

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

Even better - "Sorry Jess, I can't make it to our wedding in Charlottesville this evening."

VT BSEE '98, VT MSME '01

WV has a Charlottesville too?

Nice. I see our Alumni office is as ineffective as always being that I have no idea who this is despite repeatedly asking for contacts in this part of the world.

That's a hell of a straight trip to take but I sympathize with his pain for sure. Needs to man up for the 3 am's though. (jk, those are rough)

Safe travels to him and hope he doesn't have to turn around and return immediately.

I don't give a damn what the fans think cause, quite frankly, I know what the fans want better than they do.

Still looks better than Dabo though!

He looks like he's about say,"fu..." I dig it

What's
Important
Now

My guess is they tried to get an intimidating picture of Fu losing his cool..but 99% of the time he's cooler than a cucumber so they had to settle on that.

Dabo's isn't pleasing either. hahaha

I was there and often quote the "asterisk". Unfortunately, FSU won the quarter that mattered.

Even with that logic you have it backwards...

FSU led 14-7 at the end of the 1st. They led 28-14 at halftime. VT led 29-28 at the end of 3. FSU won 46-29. Individually, FSU won 3 out of the 4 quarters, with us only winning 1.

I mean, I get what you're saying, but... no

Aww man, but that 3rd quarter...

I didn't say "we won three of the four quarters." I'm saying if they had played 3/4 of the game and then a meteor had struck or something, we would have been National Champions.

Let's Go

HOKIES

Pls don't be like 2011, pls dont be like 2011, pls don't be like 2011.

Was there. Much sadness.

Kind of insane how similar this looks to 2011.

2011: VT 4-0 ranked 11.
2017: VT 4-0 ranked ?.

In 2011 Clemson was 13 this year they are 3.

I guess it is different since Clemson is the team with all the expectations. It interesting, someone on reddit was talking about how he felt this game was almost a turning point for both programs. Clemson went from contender to eventual tyrant and never looked back. VT went from league dominance to mediocrity, although it seems to be turning back around now.

Are we bak?

Was never really left like a Miami. Is in the bak.

Couldn't have said it better myself

That Frank Beamer fist pump is awesome.

Hoping VT brings the defensive ruckus. Offense can't have a slow start against Clemson, but the Tigers looked like the team looking ahead to next week today.

Is Pharrell actually a fan?

I knew he was from VA but I've never heard of him being a Tech fan before.

I had no idea he's a VT fan. How the heck does the school not take advantage of that in some way over all these years? I mean, he's kind of a big deal

What about Stephen Curry? He has publicly admitted to being a VT football fan. I've never heard the same about Pharrell

wait, pharrell is a VT fan?! I never knew this?!

Him and Michael Vick are really close friends

That was pretty cool hearing Fowler and Herbstreit's excitement in their voice making the announcement along with the praise. You could tell they are genuinely looking forward to it. Now I'm bummed that I can't make it. I was lucky enough to attend multiple shows in my time as a student and its such a neat experience.

So do your part, students and anyone else that can make it. As we saw in the early 2010s, getting Gameday isn't a guarantee so don't take it for granted. Go out of your way to attend. Show up, be loud, and show the GD Crew that Hokie Hospitality that made Fowler and Herbstreit so excited.

I got goosebumps when I heard that... anybody with the video of that would be much much appreciated

Looks like we may be #10 for the game.

Edit: Posted this prior to PSU making that crazy comeback. Looks like we'll be on the outside.

Not quite.

Maybe still though.

I mean if FSU was ranked at #12 with 0-1 record, any rank can happen!

Let's Go

If you're going to go there, then we might be top 5.

Let's Go

Only 2 higher ranked teams lost today. Best we can hope for is #11.

edit: It's worth noting that #16, TCU, beat #6, Ok St, on the road. There's a good chance that they'll leap over VT.

Don't think so. TCU will jump us. #11/12 is my bet.

Hoping someone can pull a segment of the broadcast where Fowler and Herbie make the announcement

Closest I got.

Why do these links never work for me on my govt computer, ..but youtube works just fine. wtf.

Awesome, thank you.

Ugh, so I live in SC and the Clemson fans are already spewing their nonsense. Their fan base has become so annoying, I really want nothing more than to see them knocked off their high horse.

Same... Moved down to Clemson territory in 2012, which is basically the worst possible timing. These people have incredibly short memories and feign like they don't know anything about Tech ever being a contender, much less having more ACC championships than them since we joined the conference.

Plus I work with basically 99% Clemson fans so being able to come back from the game with the W would make the last 5 years of suffering sooo worth it.

I feel the pain! I have lived in Clemson territory for like 10 years. Up until a few years ago hardly anyone wore shirts or had flags, but now everyone has become a Clemson fan... in the words of Johnny Cash "Sooner or later God'll cut you down."

I meant to mention this! It's hilarious how they've spread like wildfire over the last 5 years.

IMO their fan base has always been annoying.

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Agreed. I've been down here since 2015 and they are so annoying. Guys I work with have already said, "whatever. just another game for us. No different than USC(e)."

I've even tried inviting them to carpool up for the game so that they get to experience a real atmosphere. Response: "Not really interested in hearing MISTER Sandman."

I NEED this win.

- "And now Miami wants to talk about it..."

I've gotten the opposite, since my in-laws are Gamecocks along with most of the state. Direct quote: "Next week, I'm the biggest Hokie fan in history."

What's Important Now

Are we related? (/s)
I married into the Gamecock tribe as well.
In-laws putting pressure on....
(Tough times in Gamecock land....)

Also getting tired of the tigers......

What's even more annoying is trying to read anything posted on TigerNet. Their spelling and grammar are just as bad as their inflated egos.

DO YOU BELIEVE THAT WE CAN WIN THIS FIGHT SATURDAY NIGHT?

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

We put the K in Kwality

We need to set a new record for attendance at Gameday...didn't we have the most at one time?

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

I think the first time they showed up in 99 we broke the attendance record (I remember running into the stands that morning and it was pretty full). I think the second time in 99 there were even more people there.

Never crimp your blasting caps with your teeth. - Dr Haycocks

Its always 110 Holden...said every mining engineer ever.

I remember running into the stands that morning

That must have hurt.

I can't think of a better scenario than what we have before us:

We're looking for some good ole fashion revenge after Clempson beat us and took the ACC last season. We're underdogs. It's a night game in the Terror Dome. Gameday is comin. We've got a hungry team, they've been waiting for this for months.

We have nothing to lose, Clempson has everything to lose. IT. IS. TIME.

"It's a miracle in Blacksburg, TYROD DID IT MIKEY, TYROD DID IT!"

Chills. They are gonna bring it this weekend.

Man, I love that smile on Fuente's face. He wants this game!

This should be #AllMaroonEverything and Maroon Effect. Make the stadium as dark as possible. Enter Night!

I second the #AllMaroonEverything

I already PMed hokiesfb on Instagram, and would do the same on Twitter if I had one, maybe I'll get one just for this. Let's flood their inboxes with #WARPAINT requests!

Chem PhD '16

Where do you think they will put the set on campus this time around?

Question: I'm spending the night with my friend at her apartment off campus on Friday night because we want to be front row at Gameday. What time should we be there? What time do the parking lots open at the airport? She said she believes the buses don't run until 7 AM. We plan to tailgate with my family at the airport after Gameday, so it'd be ideal if I could just park there early that morning and walk. What would you all do?

"Tyrod, looking desperately, now throws it deep, has a man open, CAUUUGHT! Danny Coale, all the way!"

I have 3 favorite teams. VT, Kentucky, and whoever the hell is playing Tennessee.

The lots may not open officially till 7 but you should be fine to be there anytime the night before. Lots of people leave their cars overnight before a game. As for gameday, if you want to be front row I wouldn't plan on sleeping much. They start doing broadcasts with the morning sports center. You will basically need to camp out to be first in line. We did it in 2005. It's exhausting.

We tailgated there for a spring game at 6am and didn't have any issues. Parking rules aren't enforced very strictly

Rip his freaking head off!

After seeing your sign idea, WHATEVER IT TAKES.

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Airport RV lots usually have someone manning the gate all night for the late night RVs that arrive. The Airport RV lot does not follow VT parking rules. They are run by separate groups.

Run to Win. Pass To Score

The lightning bowl against Georgia Tech is the most memorable one for me on the list. We ended up parking up by the airport in what looked like an extra Tech Agriculture field because at that time they didn't have enough paved lots for the number of fans. All day long tailgate. Stumbled into the stadium and then the heavens opened up. Got completely soaked. Waited about 2 hours for the game to start but they eventually called the game due to lightning. Learned later that Lee Corso's rental car got hit by one of the strikes. Made it back to the car and by this time after the tailgating and the rain it was a complete muddy mess. No one could get their cars out of the lot. People were spinning tires, pushing each other's cars, etc. Finally got out and had to drive 4 hours back to DC area. I don't know how we made it back without falling asleep on I-81.

I was there too. Granted I was young, so no tailgating, but my dad and I got there around a half hour before kickoff, and we just watched the storm roll in. Stayed until one of the strikes was a bit too close for dad's comfort. I think that was my second or third time in Lane

Warning- Filter lost.

I am dying of a mixture of anticipation, excitement, and nerves. I may have diagnosable hypertension by the end of this week.

Spouse is trying to figure out how to use "Clemsoning" on his sign!

seems like this may be appropriate:

Clemsoning
(verb) 1. When you are widely favored to succeed and instead crash & burn. 2. Failing miserably and/or by a wide margin 3. Horribly embarrassing yourself in front of loved ones and strangers alike. 4. Having multiple records broken against you in front of a large audience.

Welcome to the TERROR DOME

Is Clemsoning really still a thing? They have won like 19 straight and played in back to back title games.

Clemsoning will always be a thing, as long as people are around who remember Clemsoning.

Achievement unlocked: All of the Fullers

"Sam Rogers is a college football icon" SB Nation

Thanks Frank!

They have won like 19 straight

They're at 9 straight wins. Their last regular season loss was actually the same day as ours (11/12/17).

But your larger point is true - they seem to have gotten past the old days of losing to far inferior teams.

Dabo reminds me of Beck Bennett doing the Inside SoCal skit on SNL.

Beck and Kyle (and Nick back in their Good Neighbor Stuff days) are the best. I still need to get out and see Brigsby Bear. How can a movie with Kyle and Mark Hammil be anything but amazing?

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

I am so freaking excited for this game. Being on the younger side, where the first time I realized how big college football was at the 2007 BC (Fuck Matt Ryan) game, I can't say we have had a game that has felt this this since then. 2009 Miami did not have this feeling to it, 2011 Clemson, did not have this feel, none of the Bama games, nor the tOSU games have this feel to it.

This will be me all day Saturday, but a bit more booze-filled.

According to the Parking Services email that went out this morning., it looks like Gameday will be setting up on Alumni Mall.

Updated Sept. 26-ESPN's College GameDay has announced they will broadcast live from the football game. As a result, parking will be unavailable on Alumni Mall from Wednesday, Sept. 27 though Sun., Oct. 1. The road will close to all traffic at noon Friday, Sept. 29 and reopen Sunday, Oct. 1.

This is a great spot. We went back in '05 here and it is about as good as it gets. Attracts passers by, and packs people in with a great back drop.

Oh good, we can get in line starting at 4AM.

It's easy. Go downtown until it closes, Friday night. Go get Jimmy Johns, or whatever you want that is open late night. Then go to Gameday. Sleep later in life.

Yep, but VT Promos better bring Carol Lee in the morning.

That team sure did suck last night. They just plain sucked! I mean I've seen teams suck before, but that was the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.

I remember a lot of stats like this before the Ohio State game in 2014

Not sure where to put this cause it probably doesn't deserve a whole entire new thread.

"5 things to know" for the Clemson game just got sent out. There will skydivers pregame and a card stunt after the 1st quarter. And of course, fireworks.

YAYY BILLIONS OF CARD STUNT AIRPLANES AGAIN. For real though, the card stunt is awesome, but dang did they start flying around.

There's a "College Football Live: Weekend Tailgate" airing at 5:30 PM on ESPN2. I'm assuming they'll have everything set up on Alumni Mall by this time tomorrow and will film the show there. I think this is the one you're looking for.

Hopefully Hokietapes will record and upload most of the content leading up to Saturday. I know they have most of the old Gameday shows.

I think I read that they are filming the show at 3pm and airing it at 5:15 or 5:30pm.
