Is that first gif of keene's td slowed down at all?

Chick Patty w/ Cheese

I lol'd.

He's not setting any land speed records, but he looks to have decent speed for a tight end/h-back. Outran several blue jerseys there.

He's what you call deceptively slow.

"Don't go to, go through"

I know Hoyt didn't actually hit anyone, but he looks faster than Keene.

We should compile a hoytory after the season for all of his big runs of 20+ yards

Chick Patty w/ Cheese

But he really needs to learn how to block on those runs. This is the second time when he has careened downfield without blocking.

Hoyt didn't contact anyone, but it looks like #31 takes the long way around him to avoid being flattened, so its almost like a real block.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

Did his presence prevent a player from being in position to make a play? If so, it's a real block.

People get too hung up on the physical contact portion of blocking. Blocking at this level is schemed out so that some portion of the work is done with people (offensive and defensive players alike) being in the way, not necessarily with physical contact. Granted, a downfield block like the one in question isn't a schemed block. I'm just getting at the idea that blocking is preventing a defender from making a play, not necessarily physical contact.

The gravitational pull from Hoyt's dense mass prevented the defender from achieving escape velocity, in time, to be able to make contact with the shooting star that is Rambo.

So yes, he did make an effective block.

Here here! Hoyt could block me with solely the thunderous sounds of his footsteps. He's in position as a lead blocker... I'm taking the long way around that guy too.

JP

Yeah-most definitely 31 had to run further down field before cutting over which allowed Keene to reach the end zone. PLUS I'll take a downfield lineman getting in the way of the defender to a block in the back that brings the run back any day!

#31 for Duke just totally bailed on the Keene run. I can literally hear him saying, "Aw, Fuck it" over and over on a GIF loop.

Leonard. Duh.

Real time, as this play unfolded (using my best Berman voice), I yelled out "He's bumblin...he's stumblin!"

I think he's just a slow, fast guy. He's a long strider so he looks slower. If you watch the gif he covers about 2 yards with each step at the Duke defender that Kumah takes out is covering half that space.

That being said the only thing that can beat that run is a fat guy TD.

The blow by blow of that run...

"Oh Rambo caught the ball"
"Ah, Rambo juked a guy"
"Ah Rambo is running up the field"
"Rambo stiff armed that dude, nice"
"Rambo is still running somehow, why hasn't anyone caught him yet?"
"Oh neat someone is about to catch him, this has been a nice gain"
"Ah Rambo is running up the field still"
"Oh dang that was a nice block"
"Rambo must really like running"
"Oh 31 can get him"
"Oh 31 can't get him"
"Rambo is running"
Zzzzzz....
"Oh TD nice."

Smooth, decent looking GIFs for long plays are somewhat complicated to make given file size considerations. It's hard to get them under 20 MB. From memory, that one was over 200 frames. (That's a lot.) It's also tricky to align the transition between each frame to exactly match game speed. With all that said, some are faster, and some are slower than realtime.

Lol, I cant tell if youre trying to reverse /s me

Willis balled out, put the ball in places where our receives could make a play on it. Patterson made a hell of a catch!

GIFtory dance!!

also, Patterson blindfolding the DB with his own headband? Philthy indeed.

What a beautiful way to start Monday morning!

Always Jumping even from hours away.

If Hazleton had a little more effort on the block for Grimsley, that was 6...

Yeah, Hazleton has to give more effort than that. I gotta imagine he's hearing a lot about his blocking from Fuente. If you go back through the film this is a pretty consistent issue that could be easily corrected by him. Hopefully he gets that worked out because he's a great receiver and with a little more blocking effort we could pop some big plays. The schedule isn't getting easier and we'll need those down the stretch.

I think part of it is awareness of where everyone else is on the field, and then recognition of pursuit angles. It's like he realizes a beat too late that he should / could be blocking for a ball carrier and by then it's too late to block without holding, so he has to let the guy past.

That angle of the Patterson catch is so much better than the replay I kept seeing

I didn't realize just how perfect Kumah's timing was on his big block. Looks like the Duke player was just about to start to dive at Keene when Kumah laid him out.

Awesome catch by Patterson! I swear Duke's DBs were tugging on our receivers jerseys all night long with only this one flag (that I recall anyways) to show for it.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Looks like he is about to smack the ref's butt with the headset!

Good thing the DB's helmet didn't interfere with Patterson catching the ball. Seem to be caught under his arm.

The body control + one-handed catch by Patterson reminds me a lot of Isaiah Ford.

I am quite impressed by Hoyt (#75) running down the field on the Rambo TD. Even with the stop and go, he's down inside the 5 on that play. I guess he got the memo on big guys needing to run like WRs.

I love how Kumah effectively seals #10 away from Keene, then moved over to the next level and lays out #51 in pursuit. Those two blocks plus Keene beating the one DB who had him 1v1 resulted in that glorious slomo TD.

Haha best comment of the day

One more, for those who were at the game...

Also, that first gif... If Hazleton blocks that better, we pick up at least 10-15 additional yards on that play, if not a TD, given that Grimsley appeared to have speed to beat the other 2 defenders.

All the Duke fans kept doing that. i couldnt figure out why

thumbs out to make a bull hand signal for Durham (Bull City). I think Duke started it last year, the Durham Bulls copped it as well, and now its a 'thing'

You can see a couple of the Bulls players doing it here...

So many questions on this image. Why is Floki there front and center, and why does he appear to be wearing a onesie?

The hand gesture for the Durham Bulls has been around a lot longer than that.

My freshman year roomie in '06 was from Durham and he used to do it then.

Man that shit was annoying, the stupid clap along song, and playing music as our offense came to the line of scrimmage. The last one is their only way of manufacturing crowd noise and lame!

The guys in the overalls are exactly what I would think the rest of the ACC imagines our fanbase as and I love it

Those guys were fantastic. More than once they started the "LET'S GO" chant. After re-watching the game, I was pleased to see that it was coming across loud and clear on tv.

I commented to my wife that whoever is leading the "LET'S GO" is really, really loud.

Yeah, if any of those guys are able to speak today, I'm impressed. It was a great experience in general, we really did take over Wallace Wade, and I can't wait to do it again at UNC!

I thought the best one was when we got it going across the stadium with the student section Hokies near the end of the game.

Mega Jesus let the entire Duke defense run by him, probably thinking Rambo could handle them on his own.

Oh sweet. The Chiefs play the Broncos tonight.

If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous! With treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it's not for the timid...

After a jet sweep got blown up for a big loss, I told my wife that Fuente would have a counter set up to take advantage of their being so aggressive on reading that play. I'm no French, but I'm pretty sure that the Keene play was off jet sweep action, which made me freak out during the play, and might be why he had so much room to run into.

exit light

This was a good counter to the typical jet sweep motion. I have complained that the motion gives away the snap count on in game threads before and this was the benefit.

The motion did give away the snap count but; the safety bit on the motion, was overzealous, and took himself out of position.

TD Tech. I stand corrected (until I gripe again).

Pfaff is a large man.

Grimsley is evil.

I still don't understand how that Duke DB's helmet came off.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

I think it was some sort of glitch in the Matrix. It started with the unbelievable action of refs throwing flags for another obvious PI on Duke, and the ripple effect of that improbability caused his helmet to phase shift.

For proof, look at the 3rd gif, with House getting the sack after wearing Duke #77 like a necklace all the way to the QB in direct view of two refs. No flag, so no helmets came off.

*Looks like Duke was giving Hewitt much respect as 3 OL went after him on the House/Ricky sack... same thing happened later on in the game.
*Philthy Phil's TD catch had flashes of that spring game catch pulling it down with 1 hand.
*Great shot of Pfaff putting their all everything-LB Ben Humphreys on skates for the Peoples Choice TD.
*Rambo's stiff arm happened right in front of us and was awesome to see up close since the guy had him lined up for the takedown.
*Great seats in 2nd row (no one sitting in front of us) close enough to see players acknowledge us when we yelled at them (Philthy Phil, Haze, Willis), close enough to hear the phone ring when coaches upstairs called down to the bench to order up another TD pass, and no problem to get high fives from the players after the game.
Hokie Nation took over Lane South once again!

Duke QB: "Okay guys, we've got 3 DL to block. Who wants House and Walker?"
Duke linemen: "... how bout we all block Hewitt?"
QB: "....."
OL: "Yeah, we got this. We're *definitely* blocking that guy.
QB: *thud*
OL: "Job well done, gents."

Funniest part is that Walker lines up straight on with the center (0 technique?) at snap and the center passes him off to the RG, to help triple team Hewitt.

the DB on that Patterson TD got the getting schooled trifecta:
fouled the hell out of the WR
WR still makes the highlight reel catch
DB loses his helmet

On the tip drill gif, that was some A+ athleticism by Belmar to get the hell out of the way for Floyd to make that pick. This team has some athletes, no doubt!!

"Don't go to, go through"

Belmar was tracking the ball and trying to make the pick himself. He had no idea Floyd was there to get it. Saw that on the tv replay.

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

The Rambo Rumble is exactly the kind of play we need from our team. We are used to seeing the defense swarm. One thing that this offense relies on heavily is skilled player blocking. It was nice to see Kumah laying the lumber. Hoyt probably should have blocked #9 but he still got down field and was looking to help.

How big a mismatch was Keene on those linebackers? He's pretty much as big and looks to be faster. We need to use this kid more!

Hoyt has mastered getting downfield. Blocking downfield hasn't come to him yet but that's step two. When you're that big with a full head of steam changing directions, even slightly, to make a block is difficult. One of these times his straight line track will have a defender in the way and we can all send thoughts and prayers for that defender after it happens.

He definitely blocks 31s path to the ballcarrier, and I think 31 would've gotten to Rambo before the endzone

Outside its night time, but inside its LeDay

That's the thing, just by being downfield, he is influencing defenders' paths to the ballcarrier. He's basically a freight train at that point and no one wants to be on the wrong end of that, especially when your feet aren't planted.

I am happy with Hoyt's effort. I did not meant to sound like I wasn't. I was pointing out something he could have done.

Oh you didn't I just watched it one more time after your comment and watched it again and thought about him actually hitting someone at full Mega Jesus

I'm SO looking forward to that.

THE RAMBO RUMBLE

Oh sh!t its selhini again dang son you the MVP this week.

On the 'tip drill' gif, it's classic Bud Foster training, 'get the ball and plan to score, so what if I'm on defense'. I love how they get the ball and don't just fall down.

No sir. I do not live in town. I am way out in the sticks currently

I thought Elkton was the sticks?

It's funny cause I grew up just over the mountains from Elkton, south of Stanardsville, which really was the sticks.

Elkton is a city in comparison to a lot of Rockingham County. I live out in the country too but it has its downfalls, no high speed internet or cable. Greene County is merging into Charlottesville.

I live on the side of the mountain you reference. Just the west side.

had a fun experience once in your neck of the woods. Coming home from Harrisonburg late one night and my alternator died about halfway up the west side of the mtn on 33. Managed to roll backwards and do a wide u turn in reverse to get pointed the right way. Then I coasted down the mtn in my ranger with no power steering, brakes, or lights. Ran out of momentum somewhere past that campground with the pool and the big slide you could see from the highway. Fun times.

Swift Run campground, coldest pool water south of Canada!

Was at the game last weekend.

Two things i noticed was the maroon and orange suspender wearing gents above invaded the Duke student section at some point. The first few rows were a sea of VT fans.

The other was a bit more cringeworthy but I still had a good laugh. Duke kept showing some comm major on the big screen as she interviewed tailgaters and season ticket holder alike. At one point, they had all these children with serious illness out on the goal line to lead a 'Lets Go Duke' chant. The whole place erupted with Hokie chants instead, she just kind of smirked and tried to ignore it. The kids didn't seem to upset.

Every time that girls face came back up on the screen the VT fans starting piping up and yelling over her.

Also, the were multiple cash giveaway by some random seat generator. I believe each time the chosen seat was empty. Duke fans are nice people but not very exciting. The stadium was not even close to full and looked to be far more Hokies from the getgo. You'd think an nighttime kickoff and ACC matchup with the home team being ranked would draw a crowd...
