OT: TKP Job Board

I've wanted to start a TKP Job Board for awhile, but with so many layoffs due to Covid-19, I thought now would be a good time.

Guidelines so things don't get crazy:

  • Only list a job once
  • Please include your email in the job posting for offline discussion.
  • Please update your original job posting comment when the job has been filled
  • If you are interested in a job, please email the poster directly to reduce noise

Any other guidelines that would be helpful?

My goal with this is to connect Hokies in need with companies that are hiring!

Mods - if this isn't allowed, please delete.

A/E firm Looking for:
Mechanical Engineers/designers
Electrical Engineers/designers
Construction Administrators
Structural Designers/Engineers
Architect/ Project Managers/designers
Civil engineers/designers

Offices in Blacksburg, Charleston, WV, and Martinsburg, WV. Positions are available at all three offices.
Firm does a wide range of work. K-12, Governmental, higher Ed, industrial, medical/behavioral health. Most anything except residential, developer work, churches. I mean, we occasionally do these, but they aren't markets we often dabble in.

Your firm ever offer Internships or Coop opportunities. My son is a Sophomore Civil major and is starting to look.

Yes. We have one a year ahead working for us right now (she wants to go structural, but is doing a bit of both). As he gets closer to wanting to look for such things, have him drop off a resume at ZMM (it's beside the south main Kroger). Or can email it to careers@zmm.com.

Will do. Thank you.

This is still active. Civil is also on the table.

Still very much an active thing. Architects, engineers, and construction administration folks needed. If you're interested, drop an email and I'll reach out.

Additionally, any engineers or cost estimators looking for sub opportunities would be welcome to reach out.

Adding on:
We now have a Marietta, OH location.
Still need licensed and unlicensed: Architectural, Mechanical, Civil, Plumbing, Electrical, and Structural people.
Structural has a fairly straightforward path to being head structural engineer, pending a retirement.

Partial remote options are available.

I'm still looking for all these things. Structural is a big need.
And... if there is someone in western NC that would be interested in a branch office opportunity, we could have conversations about that as well.

Is there a way to keep this pinned somewhere so it stays up? We just hired 2 people for the entry-level position and I would have loved to have posted here.

New Grads (2020 or 2021) with Biology/Life Sciences Degrees needed at the National Institutes of Health. We have a couple of Lab Tech/Lab Admin positions open. These are entry level roles with the National Cancer Institute doing groundbreaking work in Cancer Research.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Supporting FudBoster: to any new grads (2020 or 2021) with Biology/Life Sciences degrees ... I strongly encourage you to get an a real job for at least a couple of years outside of academia (i.e., one that pays a real salary and offers a 401k or 403b or whatever similar number/letter-like program) and not go into a Ph.D. program right away. And taking a year off to work as a lab tech in an academic setting like I did does not count.

I can go on for days about why you should be careful about staying in academia from age 17 through 29. Just make sure that you truly enjoy the day-to-day work of being in a lab and that you understand what the job market really is for Ph.D. scientists before jumping into that route (hint: the notion that there is a shortage of scientists at that level for the jobs that need to be filled is so far from reality it would make Goebbel's blush). Getting a masters is, as far as I know, okay. And if you get all the information and, with eyes wide open, feel that a doctorate in the life sciences is the way to go, you can still do it. Just make sure to do your own due diligence first.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

Thanks for the follow up. Well said. I'd also add that NIH is a great place to obtain references for folks that are looking to continue their education for Ph.D programs. These folks are well known and well connected.

Aside: How long have you been with Pearson?

I should talk with y'all about some of your capabilities, maybe at the next Pack EXPO. It would be nice to have a local integrator to work with.

So I've been with pearson since they bought my old company Flexicell about 3 years and wouldve been 5 years with Flexicell. Dont think we are going to this years pack EXPO due to covid concerns but we do a wide range of stuff now along with the robotic integration. We do a very wide range of case packing, palletizing, and with Pearsons tech case building sealing etc so we can do all of a packing job with our wide range.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Ok cool, I worked with Flexicell maybe 8 years back on a project on one of our packaging lines. Didn't know they had been bought.

Yeah so the old owner sold so he could retire and we got bought by pearson so now we can do all parts of a packaging line with their tech combined with ours. We still do primarily all the robotic integration here in VA as its kind of our specialty in a way plus we have a fab shop to do all the custom parts when we need them which makes it easier to keep it all in house. Hope the line yall got a few years back is going strong I help out with refurbs and rebuilds alot so I get to see and work on alot of the older stuff and do alot of the aftermarket refurbs with all the electrical stuff.

We currently have both salaried and hourly positions available for various levels of skill and education posted at the following link: https://ecmmsva.com/careers/job-openings/

Literally closed on a house in Sandston yesterday. My wife (MSE grad) got a job at DuPont and I'm (history major) just looking to see what's in the area. I'll check in our your opportunities, any other good companies in this area?

There are a ton of businesses in the area between Laburnum and the Bottoms Bridge exit on 64 (mi 205).

Not sure what type of work you are looking for, but if you are flexible there should be an opportunity for you within 10 minutes of your house.

My company is looking to bring in a couple of people for the entry-level Research Analyst role in the medical technologies (Med-Tech) group. Full time and $50,000 per year. Great opportunity for science and engineering people who want to get into the business aspects of science, but we really don't care that much about the specific degree you have.

Our entry-level positions are for people who are still in school but getting ready to graduate (end of the summer is okay) or who are recent graduates with 0-2 years of work experience. We don't say a job requires 3 years of experience in the field and then have the gall to call it "entry level". I would normally handle the initial resume and cover letter review, but if anyone applies from TKP, I will recuse myself and have someone else make the final interview decisions. Feel it would be better if I did not evaluate others from here.

As with the job posted above, people are expected to be in the office in Horsham, PA once things get back to normal. Please do not apply unless you are living in the Philadelphia area or are willing to move there - and we are not going to pay relocation for an entry-level position. Just no way to justify the cost for that. We only post on local university websites and I post here for fellow Hokies just in case you are in the area or from the area.

If you are interested, just reply to this post and I'll get in touch with you.

We are a full-service market research consulting firm conducting both qualitative and quantitative research for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device industries. The Med-Tech group focuses primarily on medical devices and technology. Our clients include large multi-national firms as well as mid-sized and emerging companies. As a global firm with major offices in the US, UK, France and Singapore, the majority of our studies involve working in multiple countries with physicians, patients, caregivers, allied health professionals, or payers.

The Research Analyst's primary roles are to coordinate fieldwork with vendors, analyze the results from primary market research and help prepare slides to be incorporated into final reports for clients. This includes:

Obtain cost quotes from vendors for senior management
Liaison with fieldwork agencies to assure proper recruiting of the people we are interviewing occurs within the specified time frame
Provide regular updates to the client about how the project is progressing
Prepare notes and analyze the results of individual one-on-one interviews or focus group interviews conducted by RP
Analyze results obtained from quantitative surveys RP is conducting
Prepare slides for senior management, which will be incorporated into final reports

We offer formal as well as on-the-job training, competitive salaries, and opportunities for internal advancement, health benefits, flextime, and a 401K plan with company contributions. Positions are open immediately, but we are able to accommodate those who will graduate by the end of the summer, 2021

Candidates for the entry-level Research Analyst position should:

Be a US citizen or legal resident able to work indefinitely in the US without sponsorship – we do not currently sponsor H1B Visas or OPT candidates
Either (1) anticipate graduation by the summer of 2021 (end of summer is okay) or (2) be a recent college graduate with 0-2 years of work experience
Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 for serious consideration
Have strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills – initial interviews will take place by telephone and candidates will be asked to provide a writing and PowerPoint sample before any in-person interviews occur
Be comfortable working with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Once things get back to normal, be willing to travel approximately 10% of the time – the majority of travel is US domestic, but some international travel is possible, including to the home office in London
Be logistically based at the US home office in Horsham – most of the office is working remotely and will likely continue this way for a while. We currently allow people to work remotely or come into the office based on their comfort level with coming in - but some staff training will take place in the main office.

The ideal candidate will have a natural science, social science, engineering, or business/marketing background, but this is not required. Experience in market research, experience in healthcare, medical devices/technology, or fluency in multiple languages are pluses, but not required.

Awesome! Yeah, live in Laurel, and am over at the beach quite a bit. Haven't gotten to play Rookery yet, but it's on my list soon. (I am swamped now, leaving on Friday, and it'll be in the fall sometime.) I'm a member at Nutters in Salisbury, for now, but moving closer to another course in the fall. I'll have to assess membership options then. Love Baywood, just haven't gotten a chance to play it lately. (Played Queenstown River course yesterday. Love that layout except for a few holes.) But would be up for a beer at the new Dewey Beer location in Harbeson in the future for sure!!!

Sitting in a rental house on Cape Henlopen Drive right now. First visit to the area and really like Lewes, not so much the crowded beach.

Had a really good dinner at Agave last night with the family but had a 2 hour wait for a table. Large Margaritas were a hit also. Heirloom was already on the list for just the wife and I later this week.

If you're ok with no lifeguards...go after 5 on the main beach at McBride pavillion in CHSP...its the best time of day in my opinion cause you can bring a couple beers and no one gives you grief (no booze on the beach by law) or go any time of day to the beach further down (to the south) towards the NOAA station in CHSP. Longer walk out to the sand but pretty remote. Let me know if you want any other local info...i know killer dairy farm creamery with ice cream - breweries- some other stuff...email cmahler@potterarchitects dot com.

Friendly reminder to anyone looking for jobs. Please check you spam box regularly. Had someone I reached out to for an interview and they responded late as my e-mail got stuck in a spam folder and they did not see it for a few days. That was fine, still moved on with them in the interview process. But I reached out to several other people that never responded. Some probably were not interested (why do you apply for a job you are not interested in?) but I suspect others may have gotten an e-mail stuck.

My boss sent an offer letter to someone we had both interviewed. They never responded. I did write him as well and my e-mail went through but apparently my bosses' never did. Worked out fine as he did accept and is starting next week, but not every company is going to do that type of follow-up.

Depending on the email and spam control systems used and how strict the spam settings are, the end user may never see some emails. They are blocked at the system level and only email admins will see them.

Hi all. I am not involved in recruiting for either of these positions, but wanted to toss them out there. If you are interested in either, just let me know. I'm sure I can get more details and will be able to make sure to get your resume in from of the people who will review it.

Looking for a full time office manager for our main US office in the suburbs north of Philadelphia. Not sure if it would be 32 or 40 hours a week. They would like the person to be locally in the area, but they would not have to physically be in the office every day. We have someone who works part time now, and were hoping she could switch to full time, but it does not look like she is wanting to do that.

Looking for a part time HR person to basically do what people I do now looking for people. The office has been small enough that we did not have a dedicated HR person. People who have "regular" market research roles like me would be the point person for bringing in entry-level people or interns. Someone else would do that for experienced people. We all did this on the side. The home office in the UK has dedicated HR staff, but this would be the first person in the US that is a true HR person as we have grown quite a bit. I brought in 6 entry-level people this year. I am sure they would be much more open to people not in the Philly area. Just want them in the US so the time zones are close to the various US offices. We have 2 on the east coast and 1 on the west.

Thanks for the heads up. I posted a new position this morning on the site!

The practice is off Williamson Rd north of the mall.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

My company (commercial restoration/construction subcontractor) is expanding a bit and is looking for a qualified onsite foreman/superintendent that has experience in concrete and masonry restoration in the Richmond area. My Regional office is located in College Park, MD, (corporate office is near Boston) but have been awarded several projects in Richmond, Chester, and the 757 over the past year and are looking to hire someone local to the area to run those projects. We have recently been awarded two more jobs that are expected to start later this spring.

If anyone is interested/knows someone who may be, you can send me an email at harrism1 (at) vt (dot) edu, and I can put you/them in touch with our General Superintendent/hiring manager.

My company is currently looking for a recent graduate for an entry level Process Engineering role for a Pharmaceutical client.

If interested hit me up with your email in a comment below.

You know a C. Burke that works there. JMU grad from a few years ago.

I have not met them yet. Will keep an eye out

My company is looking for a technical trainer. Heavy equipment, electrical/mechanical or training experience would be great (not necessarily all of those). Spanish speaking is a big plus. It is a pretty travel heavy position if that is something you are interested in. Lots of South America, some North America, Australia and Africa too.

Not the kind of trainer you're after, but if you ever need someone to develop training content, there is a hokie grad that does that sort of thing. Just started her own deal.

Does Capital One still do those hours long interviews with multiple panels of people? I had a recruiter hit me up months ago, had a resume on file that is years old and when I said I would send an updated one replied with "I'll just forward this on to the hiring manager". Thanks for wasting 30mins of my time during that phone call. Couldn't even get an email response from em after that either.

My nephew is going through the process now. I think he is on round 4 or 5.

It's a little different given that we're (still) 100% virtual, but yes, the interview process is fairly involved. Typically, there is a phone screen with a recruiter and potentially with the hiring manager, an online assessment/test, followed by interviews with multiple individuals. From my experience it's similar to the process used by other large tech companies (Amazon, Google, etc.).

It sounds like the recruiter dropped the ball in your case, and for that I apologize.

Hey Hokies -

We are looking for Vocational Counselors in the Fredericksburg and Stafford area. This is a position where you can make a big difference in the lives of adults with disabilities, helping them to find and maintain employment opportunities in the local community. Competitive pay, flexible scheduling, and a pretty direct way (in my opinion) to live out "Ut Prosim". Happy to answer any questions:

To any MEP Engineers out there, my firm is hiring senior and entry level positions in both Richmond and Virginia Beach. The company is about 110 people so big enough to give you the resources you need to succeed but small enough to avoid the beauacracy of the corporate world. Hit me up at wrobbins at vt [dot] edu with any questions.

The facility I work at got bought out and then is getting shut down by the end of the year. If anyone is or knows anyone looking for an electrician, or jr electrical engineer with a heavy background in automation and robotics comment below if you dont mind. Preferably trying to stay in the richmond area but would consider other locations for the right gig.

I would look at TORQ if you are willing to move. They are working on self driving cars both in Blacksburg and in Germany.

Appreciate it I'll take a look and see what they have. Finding out there arent alot of automation places in richmond that do robotics at a decent scale.

Is blueprint automation still in Richmond?

Yes they are one of the few automation spots in the city still. Not heard the best stuff from people who have worked there but currently talking to them to see what's on offer.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

That's pretty typical. There's a lot of downward pressure on pricing automated lines and all the places I've worked are constantly trying to operate as cheaply as possible without crossing that line where people start to quit. Once you cross that line, it's a death spiral. What's sad is there are still opportunities for innovation, but finding sales guys who are willing to say "yes, it costs more, but you get more and your ROI is better than the cheap option" AND customer purchasers who are willing to buy that argument is very rare.

I actually just moved on from the packaging industry after 15 years. Enjoyed the work, didn't enjoy that the margins often required personal sacrifice to keep everything moving. Then, when I did have management willing to shell out money for adequate numbers of engineers, we couldn't hire (or, he'll, even interview) good ones.

The good news is that if you've put your time in and built a useful skill set with the experience/portfolio to back it up, you can punch your ticket to a better paying/more balanced job. The place I'm at now turns down a lot of engineers I would have scooped up in an instant when I was hiring. They can afford to be picky since we're in a lucrative industry (nuclear).

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

You're dead on about the packaging industry. I fortunately and unfortunately was able to work for one of the good ones in Flexicell who was run by an owner who actually cared about his employees and their work and always went the extra mile for us. Working for one of the good ones only makes it worse when they get bought out and then you have to work for one of the worse ones in Pearson Packaging that operate with a mentality if it can be done in 1 hour it can be done in 30 minutes and if it can be done in 30 minutes it can be done in 15 minutes and so on and so forth. I get tight margins and all but once you start sacrificing quality over quantity you start producing junky farm equipment that doesn't last at all. They have nice benefits and all but the constant push to do things in unrealistic budgets and time frames has worn everyone out. They left no margin during covid and took a bath on all the marked up prices for components, conveyor you name it it all went up.

I'm a bit nervous on the automation industry as the electrical components shortage is only getting worse and making places hesitant to hire on at the moment but luckily I have a few decent leads who will hopefully pan out. The fact even the big boys in AB and such are all still having major issues manufacturing parts is something that isnt good for the immediate future of automation but hopefully at some point the market will level.

I'm keeping my eyes open for anything in robotics at this point as its all we used to do at flexicell so hopefully something will come up.

I am not seeking a new job *yet*, but better trying to understand the market and demand for my skills. I have been with the same organization taking on roles in health IT policy and health IT deployment for quality improvement as an SME since 2006. I am currently a senior director, but do not manage people. I live in the Richmond market, but would prefer remote work so I have some flexibility if we are going to stay in the area or move somewhere closer to the ocean or where I grew up. I get the impression that I am grossly underpaid in my field, but the experience of changing careers or organizations has always been so uncomfortable that I soldier on.

What should be my salary expectations for my skillset, and what is the current job market? Are there any out of the box jobs that would leverage my expertise (you all have been reading my writing for years, so I think you have an idea for my best skill- synthesizing and summarizing information, regardless of subject.)

I welcome your guidance. This past year has really beaten me down, and even the prospect of a change may be the kick in the ass that I need.

So you essentially do Healthcare IT Implementations? You go in, get customer requirements, and set up the software to fit their needs. You probably specialize in a specific area of healthcare policy and/or technology? You are a high-ranking Individual Contributor (at most tech companies, you'd be a 'principal' level)? Am I tracking?

Quick google came up with a $150k median salary, but it's tough to say - once you get to the director level (or equivilent), there's bonuses and equity that can make it hard to compare apples-to-apples.

As far as next steps go... Make the change - Steve Levitt (freakonomics) did a lot of research about this, and it suggests that if you're considering a life change of any time, you are statistically more likely to be happier after you make it (source, one of many)

As for what that change is, you basically have 3 realistic options:

  • Go to a different company in the same role and same industry
  • Stay in the same role (eg; IT SME) but in a different industry
  • Stay in the same industry (eg; Healthcare) but into a different role (Not an IT SME)

I would start by making a list of likes and dislikes of your current role. From there you can start thinking about what spaces best fit your interests (or at least avoid your dislikes), figure out which of the above buckets work for you, then kick off your job search.

So, here is where I get lost. I am not a "tech guy" and know very little about the specific technologies. I am much more focused on best practices (I assess evidence-based case studies and look for commonalities) and public policy, particularly quality measurement and reporting for CMS. It is a weird hodge podge of skills and I am not sure where they will translate, but I do know that I don't have the technical knowledge to support implementations.

I could do consulting work around how to effectively use technology and data to do more for quality besides meet compliance baselines, but my experience with consultants in the field has generally not been positive, and I do not think that is the line of work I would gear to. I have had some sniffs from EHR vendors and one contractor, but until I get a firm offer from those settings, I would rather stay with my current job, which has some misery, but also has a lot of scheduling and work flexibility.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Might look into direct healthcare employment with a larger healthcare organization. My wife is a Quality Director and interacts with Nurses, IT, and other Quality/CMS staff.

I'd look for an independent recruiter in the field and ask all your questions. They could tell you what roles fit, what level you'd translate to, and salary range.

Thank you. Didn't know there was such a thing. After working for two years in grassroots advocacy education, this was my first "real job" and it has evolved through three positions. I am flying blind a bit.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

honestly, sounds like a senior management role in most corporates. a skillset that is not technically specific but great at assessing and prioritizing best practices to determine which implementations to make.

I know that sounds Office Space, but that's what's jumping off the page for me.

It's not worthy of starting a new thread, but Imma slide in here and crowd-source some advice from y'all.

I got a job offer for significantly more than I am currently pulling. The problem is it's out-of-state and way farther away than I am prepared to move right now because reasons. But my current employer need not know that.

I am still relatively new to an office environment where asking for a raise is more than yelling, "Hey asshole, can I get a raise?" to your boss over the sounds of construction equipment. But I am wondering if there's any chance of leveraging the offer for one?

Any advice from y'all with more experience with this stuff, I'm all ears.

Edit: I should add, if there are any GIS Hokies that would be interested in a GIS Manager position outside of Nashville, let me know and I can point you that way since I was asked if I had no interest in the position if I knew of anyone who may be.

UPDATE: I didn't use this as leverage. This place can't pay me enough to stay at this point. But, I did wind up taking the job outside of Nashville. It was too good to turn down. I'm a little amused with my end and start dates. My last day here is St. Patrick's Day, and my first day at the new job is April Fool's Day. (Hoping that isn't some sort of bad omen.)

So, if any of y'all want to help a brother move or buy a house in Lynchburg, let me know.

If you play it, they will win.

Typically it is very risky to use an additional offer as leverage. I know as I have had reports do this, I have encouraged them to take it.

You only look for a job if you want something different- and by telling your current employer you have another offer, they now know you have one foot out the door. Don't use it as a threat unless you are willing to follow through.

If you want a raise at your current employer, ask for one, but have a list of your accomplishments and value to back it up. Saying you want one because of tenure or inflation is never a good argument.

Just my .02. Let us know what you decide!

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

Most managers are coached that if someone would go far enough into the process to get an offer, then they have one foot out the door within 6 months no matter what. It all comes down to how valuable an employee you are, but when I was a manager I would take it in one of two directions.
-If I needed you, I'd offer more money and try to find why you were looking in the first place and address those issues.
-If I didn't like you, or felt you weren't a make or break employee, I'd make an effort on the money front to meet you halfway and immediately start looking for your replacement. If you looked like you were mailing it in or I found an adequate replacement, I'd fire you rather than risk losing you on your timetable this leaving me scrambling to fill the hole.

Also, in my experience, once an employee decides to leave, they can be a locker room cancer even if they end up staying after an offer. They start dragging down workplace morale and affect everyone's production. Now I'm not saying you're like that, but if your manager has had similar experiences, he may project that on you.

Just my two cents. Also, I can't recommend enough not being a manager anymore. It's my absolute favorite.

Thanks for the advice. But...and not that it matters all that much in the grand scheme...I was approached with the offer. I didn't go looking.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

this is an interesting point that I think may be important. I've never been in this situation so my experience is kinda worthless but based on what I've read above I wonder if using that as a part of your leverage could be to your advantage?

"Hey boss, I love this job and I was approached by a headhunter with an offer for a similar role for much more money. I wasn't looking for a job and I'm pretty happy here but it's hard to ignore more money. Lets talk."

Onward and upward

This is what you should do. I appreciate transparency.

It's also good to understand where the market is for your skills in your area. That way you can use the offer as part of a "market rate adjustment " discussion and not as the only reason you are interested in a raise

I told him I’d crawl on my hands and knees to be the DL coach at Virginia Tech. Now, all of a sudden, I’m sitting in this chair and I told him I’d still crawl on my hands and knees to work here. I just want to be here.
JC Price

I'll say that it is tricky even when it is an offer you are actually thinking about taking. Like others said, your manager will see you as having one foot out the door for awhile if you do somehow just get a raise to stay in your current job. Are you close with your manager and does that management spot change very often? If you answered no to either of these, I'd say it is very risky. Can the company afford to lose you? Really? If not, then go for it I guess but don't overestimate your value. I'd say 95% of people are replaceable.

Also don't be surprised if your manager/company wants to know who the offer is from and where they are located. They will expect information lol. You can't just be like "Yo I can get 75% more with a mystery offer I have"...usually they want to see the offer sheet.

Be very cautious about the approach. Dont be a blunt construction guy be tactful or you could walk away without a job or having to make that move. Also be mindful of the market the offer is coming from if you got an offer from a company in LA per say more money wouldnt necessarily mean more money with cost of living adjustments and all that.

Personally always hated asking for raises as it can create awkward situations. If I find that I need to ask and force a raise it means the company isnt trying that hard to retain you or isnt a good long term fit anyway. I left my last job for the way they refused to be fair in pay and raises. My current gig the boss always looked after his good employees and in the last8 years I havent had to ask for raises and even got a big inflation bump to help out. Find a good gig and itll make it all alot easier.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Any chance? Yes, there is a chance that you could leverage it for a raise. But, as the others said, you need to be really cautious here. I would be super careful because even if you couch it in, "I got this offer and I think I'm worth more" what the HR director is going to hear is, "This person wants to be elsewhere".

Even if you have a great relationship with your direct boss and could feel this out with them without risk, be very careful about how people outside of your immediate circle (especially HR, other managers, directors, etc.) might view this information. While to your direct coworkers, you are a person with specific value and interests, the others don't know you from any other employee. Because of that, they will see how things relate to their goals and will view any and all information through that lens. To you, this is an incidental offer you are sharing. To them, you were already looking elsewhere, got an offer and have one foot out of the door whatever you said.

I do art stuff.

Oh I had this scenario play out last year. There was some ugly office drama going on, and I was ready to head out. I ended up staying at my current job. Why?

-I ended up with a promotion a week later
-My supervisor didn't know about the office drama unfolding bc reasons.
-I value my independence in being able to do my job without someone over my shoulder

The downside was I missed out on an one hell of an insurance package. If you have a job out West, there's some really good insurance being offer. Colorado, Washington, Oregon, all had packages cheaper than what I got now, covering more services. This sucked when stuff popped up, inflation, and gas prices all hitting at once.

I don't know who to reply to, but you're all saying much the same.

As far as the market goes vs my salary, I'm getting bent over the barrel. I was led to believe there was competition for the position here before being promoted. Turns out they had already made up their mind that I was the guy. I didn't have that much experience at the time, but I had been here a few years. So, I low-balled my salary thinking it was the only way I could compete with others. There were no others.

I'll put it this way, analysts in neighboring localities are making more than I am here.

Now, you are going to ask, APFOW, why the hell are you still there? To which I would say that because my experience isn't exactly where it needs to be, I am trying to tough it out and get my learn on before jumping ship. That, and I'm a stubborn SOB that was cursed with a work ethic, and I am trying to finish some things I started here.

Sad thing is, if my salary was anywhere commensurate with the position and responsibility, I would be pretty goddamned content.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

This is how you approach it. Don't ever use the threat of another job as leverage unless they already know you are being offered, or you are ready to jump. Even then you do it humbly and say the pay is the ONLY thing pulling you away and you don't want to leave but in consideration of family the offer cant be ignored.

As said though, recommend not using it a leverage directly. It should be leverage personally to eliminate fear of asking for a raise. ok so.... Instead use facts about your current job being underpaid and you seeking new challenges within the company.

Two rules of being an employee.
Rule 1: Nobody looks after you but you. Don't wait for an employer to give you a raise if you think you deserve it. Only you have your best interest at heart.
Rule 1: Don't ask for a raise if you are doing your job well. That's what you get a salary for. When you want a raise it's because you are doing MORE than what you're being asked to do in the position.

(and yes, those are both Rule #1 because they are equally important)

When you go to your manager, explain that you are seeking a raise, that you have been working beyond your scope (with examples) and that your current position is underpaid in relation to market but that you knew that going in and wanted to demonstrate your value first before talking to them (have market facts ready if needed). Then say what you are looking for, don't expect them to be mind readers.

After you have explained what you do beyond your job description and your desire to seek the next level of challenges then say: "ideally I would want to be making X annually. If you could take that into consideration and let me if we can reach that I would appreciate it." Direct and without mystery. Then if/when they offer you a raise and it's not the amount you are seeking you can say: "Thanks. This is an amazing offer and I would like to accept, but can we set specific goals for me to work up to the next level. I am confident I can become an even greater value for the company in a more demanding role."

If they offer you nothing, then be gracious and say you understand, and you will continue to work beyond your role, because your intention is to advance and help the company perform. then it's up to you if you want to look for something new or not.

I low balled myself out of college and it took a lot of time (over a decade to fix that, and technically i'm still lower than I should be but thats a whole other mess that is unrelated).

One of the biggest things I've come to see is people concerned with experience. Experience is very tricky because I've meet people with 2 years experience 10 times over. They just to the same entry level work over and over. I've seen people with 3 years experience that are way better than some one with 15. People get reinforced with bad experiences and don't know better, some are to stubborn to learn from their mistakes. If you can do the job then do the job, good experience helps make things easier when you run into problems or to know what problems to avoid, but lots of people just go head down, blinders on and screw things up.

Ok, can we go ahead and clear this up? Because this has been bothering me since the first ticket exchange thread.

Below is taken from the basketball ticket exchange. Pretty sure it's been the exact same wording on all ticket exchange threads.

The best way to exchange email addresses is to encode them, for example: foo [AT] bar (dot) com.

To me, this means it was typed this way so as not to create an encoded email in the instructions while elaborating on the preferred method.

For instance, it says:

The best way to exchange email addresses is to encode them

Now if you type out an email the way whatever Mod edited this post to; literally foo [AT] bar (dot) com. Exactly how does this encode the email?

But, if you type foo@bar.com you get the encoded hyperlink to email directly to that address.

I grumble every time someone posts their email in the former example. But I keep going about my day. But then a Mod comes along and changes someone's post to that format...it's just too much, and I gotta know once and for all.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

it has been mentioned in the past that Joe and Co. recommend encoding the addresses that way specifically to protect whoever is posting them from publishing their address inadvertently (see reply above). Encode, in this usage, means to hide it from outside eyes, not to take advantage of CSS coding to give mailto: functionality.

If you wanted to work with me, green infrastructure and retrofitting deteriorated assets (stream restoration, removal of impervious areas, flood resilience) near the Maryland and Delaware beaches with Hokie talk and golfing, drop me a line. Moving to the shore isn't as scary as it sounds and it's a great place to raise a family and/or slow down from the urban pace of life. bjettmccrone at the gmail. Tossing this out there once again to see if any engineers with CAD experience as well as green retrofitting/ flood mitigation/ resiliency engineering want to investigate a move. We could maybe even work something out for remote work a few days a week and we do have an office in the Sparks (outside B'more) area.

As a federal gov't employee I presume, do you have any advice for people trying to navigate USAJobs? In the past I have applied for several federal jobs, and with some I have had referrals to hiring managers for interviews. But most of the time I feel like the application goes into a black hole and you never hear anything. I had heard years ago about the importance of having a federal format for your resume with specific things they are looking for/keywords relevant to the job. Was told a lot of the initial screening is sometimes done by a computer.

Was told a lot of the initial screening is sometimes done by a computer.

That's true almost everywhere especially large companies and the federal gov. You can actually get software to analyze your resume and make it stronger against ATS filters if you feel like you're qualified and not getting the looks repetitively its at least worth reading up on the topic.

Also the federal gov sector is just generally hard to break into, the people there often don't leave, lots of positions are taken up by contracts, and when they do finally hire outside its often filtering in talent from contractors that are already familiar with the government. (At least this is the case in Federal IT)

(add if applicable) /s

I had heard about the filters used to scan the resume. I also heard that on a lot of the self-assessment questions they give you, if you don't answer that you are an absolute expert at everything they automatically boot your application. And some questions are so oddly specific to that particular job you would have only done it if you worked there before. I've seen some of the tactics to ensure that even if it's a public posting, either a contractor or internal hire will get it (like certain authorizations or clearances you wouldn't otherwise have). Sort of frustrating. Many have told me it's extremely difficult getting your foot in the door.

Our firm will be at the Architecture career fair on the 27th. Any student interested in work in the Architecture/Engineering field, as it relates to construction should go. Or, if you're connected to someone who is, tell them to go. We've only ever had one engineer stop at our booth. I guess they don't put it together that architects and engineers are in the same company sometimes.
Either way, they should say hi to the goofy guy at the ZMM booth.

I'm going to need you to find out what they changed in 1554. The old gray mare just ain't what she used to be.

Nope, they have a production brewery just outside Roanoke that happens to be about 5 miles from my house.

Ballast point had a brewery and tasting room in Daleville, VA that New Belgium bought.

Plenty of people have asked so I will get out in front of the question.

New Belgium expects to eventually open a tasting room there but, as if this point they have not even started any sort of design or business plan for it. It is not a priority.

1554 is one of my wife's favorite.
Total speculation by my part but I bet they didn't change much except for perhaps an ingredient source or that due to the ingredients being all agricultural in nature, the grain or yeast may have changed to do seasonal changes.
The other possibility is that they changed which brewery produces it.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

The change seemed to coincide with the east coast production.
It also conveniently happened around when they stopped calling it a black ale. I know the reasons for the name change. I really don't think they altered process. I'm just going to assume it was production change.

Congrats, moving to Asheville then? Very jealous

My oldest daughter found yesterday she's been accepted to VT interior design.
She wants to work for Disney. Anyone here have any insight into VT and internships?

Apparently VT has received 58,000 applications for Fall 2024 and accepted 7800 so far.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

The Disney college program is probably the best place to start. It will not have any roles in interior design though. It'll be for front line roles like attractions, merchandise, etc. It is a good way to get your foot in the door and they offer a lot of networking events for participants.

I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

Disney Imagineering used to have an internship program and they would recruit at Tech. My sister and I did it 20+ years ago but not sure if they still do it. They build both the attractions and resorts so they might have something for interior design.

That's what she wants to do is Imagineering.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

They still have it. One of my best friends and former coworkers did it. She graduated from Clemson in 2013, did her internship in 2012ish

Can't speak to Disney, but once she's a year or so in, internships are available in the area. My firm (ZMM Blacksburg) takes people. I have friends at firms in Roanoke that take on interiors people. If she wants to live at home with you all, I can put her in contact with someone up there.

My older sister did interior design. A classmate of hers went on to eventually work for Pixar. Pretty sure he parlayed his portfolio into a masters at Carnegie Mellon in an animation related field first.

Hi folks. I got some hard news yesterday - my company is going through a round of layoffs and my role is being eliminated and moved to a "global capability center" which, reading between the lines, sounds like they're shipping it overseas where engineers are cheaper to pay. They are giving me plenty of notice - I'll be retained until July 31st and will receive a severance package if I make it to that date. But, I'm back on the job hunt for the first time in 5 years. I live in Hillsborough, NC and would prefer not to relocate. The job I had was a fully remote job (which is part of why the company can afford to ship it overseas, I guess) so I have WFH experience and would be open to that or a hybrid model, so long as I don't have to move. I don't know if anyone on here is aware of any opportunities in and around the area but I know there are a few folks in North Carolina so I thought I'd at least put out some feelers. It's early yet - this news is still fresh and I have 6-9 months to figure things out.

Cheers and Go Hokies!

So, what sort of role are you after? And what flavor of ME are you?

it's a fair question - I need to spend the next couple months figuring that out - I've done several different things so my experience and background is varied. I started as a design engineer in a manufacturing facility designing custom steel products for work trucks for tree-care, tele-com, and energy companies (mostly) and then transitioned a project management roll with a heavy civil contractor for a few years before joining Peace Corps. After Peace Corps I got my current job with a med device company where I became the global subject matter expert for a specific type of quality contract that we have in place with most of our supply base. So, not exactly sure what I'd like to tackle next yet. This news is still pretty fresh so I'm going to take some time to sit and think about what I want to do

Ah man, not exactly reassuring to me to see this in a field I'm trying to break into. Hate to hear it more for you though. Good luck out there!

Well, since this thread is open anyways... Shit went sideways and I put my 2 weeks notice in about a month ago. I'm looking for a job obviously, but also for some short term career advice.

I've been working as some form of automotive technician for 5 years now, and while I'm sure there are some good jobs out there, I'm feeling pretty burnt out on the industry and am struggling to find one of the good jobs. There's a whole lot of BS and not enough money to want to deal with it. I have started working towards an Associates in Engineering degree with the current goal being to get a degree in mechanical engineering from one of the 4 year schools in Carolina. Hopefully, NC St. since they're a good engineering school and I'm currently living in Raleigh anyways.

My problem is that I need to find a way to support myself while I'm working on my degree. While my first semester went extremely well, straight As and 2nd place in the school's competition for the intro to engineering class, I don't think I have enough of a skill set to get a good paid internship yet. Although, I'll certainly try.

TL;DR I'm looking for any job to pay the bills for the moment in Raleigh, but am also trying to figure how to best pursue a degree and career in engineering. To add, I also have a degree in Natural Resources Conservation from VT, but I have struggled to get a job with that degree in the past. If anyone is interested I'm willing to share my resume and I'll try to post one online I can link to here in an edit some time tomorrow.

Thanks y'all

Some companies will pay for your schooling, just need to get a foot in the door. I work for RTX/Collins Aerospace, and we have such a program. I have two techs on my team right now working towards engineering degrees and it's all paid for. We also have paid internships, although the ones for next summer got filled last fall.

Close enough to try and make something work! I'm living on the other side of Raleigh at the moment, but my lease ends this spring anyways. That job seems like an ideal situation for me. I've got class the rest of the night starting soon, but I'll definitely put in an application tomorrow. Thanks for the information!

You might want to check out the Apprentice School with Newport News Shipbuilding. It's not a traditional Engineering school, but there is a Marine Engineering option that has students attaining an Engineering degree from ODU.

An interesting idea, and I appreciate the thought. I think for the moment I want to stay in Carolina at least until I finish my Associate's degree.

A couple thoughts. One of my brother in laws was in a similar situation. He got a job teaching automotive tech at a high school with his certifications. Pay was less, benefits much better with an eventual pension as a teacher.

Alternatively, look at a public works department or local government. They are normally always looking for employees and somebody that could repair or maintain equipment would probably be a big draw.

A lot of counties and mid-size to larger cities also have their own fleet services departments to maintain and repair their fleet. Could be a good stable option if wanting to stay in the automotive field.

They also have the advantage of being government employees with state holidays and pensions.

All three of the automotive jobs I had didn't care or actively didn't look for people with ASE certifications for different reasons so I never went for any certifications even though at least one, if not 2 of them had a large ASE certification sign in the customer area. Also, I'm self taught so I never got anything from any sort of schooling. From what I've heard from most of the Techs of similar or younger age, that was the right move. An overwhelming majority found vocational schooling didn't really help them in the professional environment. So teaching probably isn't an option for me. Not sure that's what I'd really want to do anyways.

With that being said, if I have to go back into the automotive world, I'm right there with you and VTJ12, I'll be looking for fleet mechanics spots. I appreciate the stability over the promise of maybe if the wind blows just the right way under a full moon maybe I can make more money.

Thanks for the input!

As I've posted here, my daughter is 1st year at VT Interior design. First semester went really well.
Probably not enough schooling yet to get an internship this summer but, I'll stir that pot anyway with expectations that nothing before the summer 18 months from now, would even be considered.

Any insights on how to discover internship opportunities would be appreciated. I've never been good with that sort of thing.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Not in that field, so can't help with specifics. But in engineering, most schools run job fairs every spring and fall semester. Have her check with the department and VT Career Services for upcoming fairs.

We typically hire summer interns the previous fall, from said fairs. We are more often looking for upcoming grads in the spring, although we hire a lot of former interns before that, so few offers made to cold interviews.

Have her attend the career fair this year. It's usually late February or early march. Just have her go scouting firms. Most aren't going to be ready to hire a first year intern. But, she can talk to firms and see if there are any in the Roanoke area that interest her. Or, if she wants to go elsewhere during a future summer, there are tons there. She can get some practice talking to people this year, and then look at a design internship next year. She's welcome to come by my booth. We definitely won't be in a position to hire a first year. But I'll be happy to talk with her about her work and give advice.
She might be able to pull off a job with someone like Barrows. They're a big furniture outfit in Roanoke. They're not a residential furniture place. So, she would be exposed to more systems and types than she would in a regular furniture store.

Does she have any work sample from school to show? First year is tough to get paid design internships to be honest. Usually not enough skillset to be useful unfortunately. If getting paid is not a concern I would recommend approaching firms for unpaid internships. I did that for 3 years and it was a difference maker.

If money isn't a concern at all and looking for adventure I could reach out to few people I know here in China and Southeast Asia.

And as noted, if you haven't spoken to VTs internship placement program I would do that. I'm talking to them about setting up a few positions in the future, but in a different field unfortunately.

Excellent advice from the 3 of you. Thank you very much.

Yes, she has kept her projects, she has 3 due each week.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I think most unpaid internships have gone the way of the dodo bird (at least in architecture, I assume this to be true in ID as well)

Yea, it's seen as something that only wealthy individuals can take advantage of. Not only that, but unpaid labor is generally frowned upon.

I definitely was not wealthy. I worked a second job in fact. But it got me a lot of early experience. A place that otherwise says they don't have a position, will still take someone that offers to come every day and learn. Gotta outwork everyone else and usually I did.

Under the bylaws of the AIA, members can't offer unpaid internships anymore. Its probably been that way for close to 10 years now

🤣 the AIA is not all poweful. I definitely didn't know that, but mostly because I have never concerned myself with the AIA. So look, firms may not advertise and offer unpaid internships as a job but you can walk into any firm and offer to learn for free. I arranged for a family friend's daughter to join a top 10 firm in Chicago for a summer in 2018. That's well within the last 10 years.

And the hatred that many people - not here, but certainly on LinkedIn - voice against unpaid internships is really short-sited and irrational. They can give people who might never get a chance in a new field or area a chance. It's not like companies are going to put these people in key, long-term roles. They were short and give people a shot. Sure, there are places that abuse the system. But word will get out fast and those companies won't be able to do it for long. As long as you are not doing unskilled manual labor, where it would be easy to take advantage of people short-term, I really think making companies pay limits people's opportunities more than the benefit that you get from getting modest pay for 3 or 4 months.

Good to hear you still offer people opportunities to prove themselves.

My company is giving me a promotion and I am relocating from MD down to Richmond next month to become the Department Head of our new office down there (construction contractor) - We are a fairly regional office that covers all of VA with the exception of NoVa (DC office covers NoVa, MD, DE and our new Raleigh office covers NC and SC). Smaller company that is a subsidiary of a large Construction Holdings company (AMAZING benefits) that focuses in specialty restoration work. Main focuses are historic restorations, concrete repairs, masonry repairs, waterproofing, and dabble a bit in structural timber and steel. We are actually currently working on a masonry restoration project at Norris Hall on campus, and were recently awarded a stair repair project at Heth Hall on Radford's campus, among a few we have upcoming for both VCU and the City of Richmond.

That being said, we aren't currently looking for any project management personnel yet until we can get a steady backlog built up (hopefully by the end of the summer), but we will have a fairly immediate need for field supervision running the jobs and manpower (Foremen and Superintendents) if anyone here is interested or knows anyone who might be!

Bring your defensive genius to Lane Stadium. Let's rebuild the Lunch Pail defense together! 🏈

Careful you might just get a job offer from VT HR before the day is over with! /s

Also do the classic HR thing on the salary - don't list a range but just say, "Commensurate with Experience"

Adapts schemes and strategies to changing circumstances

Quals- 1. Knows what he is fucking doing as a DC. Done it before at the P4 level. 2. Has a clear understanding that there are good HS DT's outside of a mythical 6 hour radius of Christiansburg. 3. Knows what he is fucking doing again.

So uhhh... would there be any WFH options with this role?

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

No, Mr. Crooke abused that privilege, resulting in his termination, along with a new in office policy.

So like is this a customer facing job or are we just working in the backend? Also, will there be a lot of travel associated with it?

Do ya afta have a piss test?

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

A bit of both. Expect 75% travel. Busy season is August through January, expect 100 hour weeks. But only 60 hours/week the rest of the year.

That's not the one I got.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

for my IT folks

I'm already in the field, but currently studying to get my SEC plus (hopefully by March) so I can start to branch out. Currently a fiber tech out here at Wright Patt.

You guys have any tips or pointers for security Plus?

Any

Once you get it, start studying for CISSP, its what really matters. Sec+ really only matters to get admin privileges on gov't systems. CISSP is recognized by commercial companies a lot more as well as govt.

Noted, thank you!

I have a construction project (concrete, masonry, and waterproofing) on Radford's campus that is going to kick off in the next month or so and will carry throughout the summer with a hard completion date of mid-August before classes are back in session. I'm looking to hire someone locally within the NRV to help our with the Project Management aspect of it as I am located in Richmond and our guys currently working in Blacksburg are already assigned to another job.

Ideally it would be someone with construction project management experience, but I'd be open to a recent graduate situation as well depending on a few factors. Competitive pay and legit top-notch benefits. Let me know on here or shoot me an email at harrism1 (at) vt.edu if you (or anyone you know) might be interested and we can talk about it!

EDIT: Also - I am actively looking for someone in the Richmond area as well. Much more open to recent graduate and/or less experience here as it is our local office and will be much easier to train and work with someone daily rather than them being on an island in SWVA.

Is this project Heth, by chance?

Yes, actually lol I was wondering if you had anything to do with it once I saw it was your firm on the drawings. I've got a PM ready to run the job but are rapidly growing in RVA so I was hoping to keep my younger PE/onsite guys here, but it looks like I may have to spare one of them for the summer and find more people here locally.

That job will have a few intricacies that make it interesting. But the polished precast and the pedestal pavers are the make or break for it.

We have the summer job in Radford covered now, but I am actively hiring for a full-time entry-level Construction Management (Project Engineer) position here in Richmond. If anyone is or knows anyone who might be interested, shoot me an email!

Are there any Jr. and Sr. Level Electrical Engineers out there with building design experience? My Black & Veatch Team is looking for a few engineers to join our Data Center Design Team. E-mail me and I can pass along the requisition. Hybrid work environment w/ 1 to 3 days in an office per week or potential to work from home based on your location. LinetteJ1 -at- yahoo.com

Hadn't heard that company name in a long time. I worked on a water treatment plant with them about 10 years ago. I was just a peon at the time though.

Not an electrical engineer, but do pretend to know what I'm talking about in that department.

Where is the office? I have a friend in Colombus who is looking to leave his EE spot. He has his universal PE stamp. I figure a data center can't be much different than power for hospitals.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

Anyone working someplace or know of someplace that is looking for someone to do project management work? Friend of mine was laid off a couple of years ago. Also had an injury that knocked her out of commission for quite a while, and she's struggling to find things. In her 50s and she has run into the "overqualified" and "2-year gap" problems trying to find a position. Thankfully, her husband has a good job, so they are doing fine, but she is still wanting to get back to work.

Ideally, someplace in New York/New Jersey/eastern Pennsylvania or remote, but they are willing to relocate as well if the right opportunity comes up.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

If anyone knows of some place hiring a person with experience in public sector inside sales/sales operations either remote or within the Northern VA/DC area, I am having a terrible time trying to get back into the workforce since June. I am not married to public sector jobs, that's just what my background is for the past 10+ years dealing with SEWP/Netcents/CIO-CS/GSA, etc. 2 years with a value added reseller, and 9 with a distributor.

Looking for something in Inside Sales, Sales Operations, or Deal Desk role, not looking to move into the field. I also have experience managing a team for 2 years and am open for a managerial role or individual contribution.

chad.a.tang at gmail. Thank you for reading

We are looking for a few civil, possible mechanical, engineers in our lower Eastern Shore offices around Salisbury. One is for water/wastewater design. One is for project management for our municipal projects and clients. It's a little slower over here, but still only 2 hours from DC, Baltimore, and Philly...
