Heading to Blacksburg

I'm going to be visiting Blacksburg tomorrow as a late Christmas gift from my dad. I'm from Florida and I dont really know which places to check out, and my dad doesn't quite remember the area so could you guys give me some ideas of good places to go see.

It goes without saying but: Lane Stadium.

Sometimes the gates are unlocked...

Sam Rogers sliced a drive off of the campus golf course. He had to use a wedge. It left a divot. That divot is known as the duck pond. Check out the War Memorial. Very powerful.

I know that there has been some segments of TKP that do not enjoy these Sam Rodgers themed feats of strength; but this is fantastic. Feel free to strut around with your wings proudly displayed.

Make sure you go through downtown and eat at Mike's/Cabo Fish Taco/anything but Moe's.

chipotle...

JK. Eat local while your in town.

But if you're going with a chain, Chipotle is the clear choice.

5 guys?

CABO FISH TACO for food.
Hokie House for drinks.

(Hokie House also has really good food)

I think this kid is 15ish...drinks may be out of the question

Yeah I was waiting for someone to notice that, i don't know if kid is the right word though..

But I'm sure my dad still would still love to try the drinks

Lists are in no particular order, just things I'd do if I had a day or two to spend back in the 'Burg.

Food:
1. Souvlaki
2. Mike's
3. Bull & Bones (also great beer)
4. Cabo Fish Taco (also cheap margaritas)

Places:
1. Lane Stadium
2. Both memorials (spend some time, don't just pass by)
3. Cascades, especially if it is cold and the falls are frozen over. Even if they aren't, it's an easy and scenic hike (more like a walk uphill, really).

Drinks:
1. Cellar (great food, too, but I always liked to hang out downstairs)
2. Hokie House
3. Rivermill

"Exit light..."

THIS IS LITERALLY EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW IN THE ORDER THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW IT IN. THOUGH I MIGHT SWAP HOKIE HOUSE AND THE CELLAR ON THE OTHER HAND THAT'S A MAYBE.

How is 'Get a rail from TOTS' not number 1 on the drinking list?!?!

TOTS was a pretty good scene, but the Rails these days pale in comparison to what they were several years ago.

"Exit light..."

Unfortunately this is true... I wish it wasn't.

It's a little ways out of Blacksburg but....

HOMEPLACE!

You may thank us later for the greatest food coma of your life.

@VTimHokie85

Make sure you take Harding/Catawba/Blacksburg Rd. out there as well. It's a beautiful drive.

Now for the way back, I-81 may be a little easier on a full stomach.

I was always forced to take the interstate back. Couldn't handle that many turns on after the Homeplace

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

I drove out that way once on a whim.

Hit a baby deer. :-\

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I don't know about everyone else, but I really like boudreaux's. Petty good Cajun food. I recommend the crawfish po' with Cajun mayo

Got that right

Thanks guys, I'll add all those places to the list

Rails from TOTS

rail

Off topic but, Skipper (who hasn't been on TKP in a while) famously snuck out a rail in his pocket one night and then I drank it when he got home and passed out from drunken achievement.

Go to the Farmhouse in Christiansburg and get the Prime Rib. By far the best place I've been to in the area.

For food, my favorites are:

  • Pizza and a beer at PK's
  • A Po boy from Boudreaux's
  • Bull and Bones

The Cellar is also pretty good. If you're there long enough, there are some decent hikes in the area that can be done in just a few hours. Obviously, as others have said, take a quick campus tour and see the War Memorial, the April 16th Memorial, the Stadium, etc.

If you decide to do a hike, Dragon's Tooth is a pretty good one, and it is very close to Homeplace, which I haven't actually been to, but have heard rave reviews from everyone, so you could probably combine those pretty easily. I got up early and hiked Dragoon's Tooth before the sun came up about a month ago--the view is pretty nice.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

Pete, you make me want to pack it in and go back for a doctoral degree.

This is exactly why I want to do a sunrise hike. That and hike the cascades when they are frozen, which shouldn't be hard to do with the way the weather has been so far.

love that hike. the rock scramble is the best. but the view from McAfee's Knob is better imo
mcafee knob
especially at sunrise. some friends and i hiked up in evening, camped at top, and saw sunrise up there.

Bottom line: Go hiking/running/biking.

What if the girl isn't there when they take the hike?

(apologies in advance if that's someone's significant other)
