Lets end the Streak....

The Hokies have completed their OOC Schedule and now get the Louisville Cardinals. The Hokies are 8-35 in a lopsided relationship with Louisville going into their 44th meeting. There is bad blood between these programs, as in the distant past Louisville made it their mission to see the Hokies dumped by the old Metro Conference. Louisville currently treats Virginia Tech basketball like the Hokies treat the Hoos in football, coming into this matchup on a 16-game winning streak. The Hokies come into this matchup 8-1 after the BooHoo's chickened out on Saturday's game.

The Cardinals are coached by Chris Mack, who is in his third season as head coach at Louisville. Mack is 51-22 overall guiding the Cardinals, but 31-8 in the last two seasons. Prior to Louisville, Mack had a 9-year run at Xavier where he took the Musketeers to the NCAA tournament in all but one season. He is 266-119 overall as a head coach.

Coach Mack's Cardinals are just outside the rankings in the AP Poll and 25th in the Coaches Poll. They come in 7-1 with wins over Evansville, Seton Hall, Prairie View, Western Kentucky, Kentucky out of conference. Pitt and Boston College are their two ACC wins so far. Their sole loss was shorthanded against Wisconsin.

Coach Mack lost half his team, which may have worked in his favor, which is scary considering they were 24-7 last season. The Cardinals are off to a better start this season and in a jumbled ACC seem poised to do big things this season.

The Cardinals come into this season with EIGHT new Freshman and one huge transfer. Carlik Jones transferred from Radford and other then a minor injury, hasn't missed a beat moving up, scoring 16.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and 5.1 assists. Three Freshman are playing major roles for the Cardinals in Dre Davis, Jae'lyn Withers and JJ Traynor, who are combining for 23.5 points, 13.6 rebounds and 2 assists.

Defensively, Coach Mack uses the Pack Line Defense which is designed to create extreme ball pressure. Another major facet is to keep the ball out of the middle of the court. His teams strive to force the offense to take contested jump shots "away from the box". Critical to this defense being successful requires that his teams develop excellent help defense and communicate clearly on defense.

The idea is to "discourage the shot, but play the drive" through positioning, closing out with high hands, building walls, closing gaps and jumping to the ball.

Offensively, Coach Mack uses a Continuity Pick and Roll offense stressing that his team limit turnovers and make plays by keeping the ball in his best players hands. They strive to force their opponent's post players to defend away from the basket. This allows them to gain rebounding advantages, get open shots, get to the free throw line more often and create mismatches using rotations. One critical aspect when defending is to be prepared for players off ball cutting to passing lanes to force defenders to react.

The Cardinals come in with five players averaging nine or more points per game but the Cardinals only go two deep on the bench for significant minutes or contributions. This is by design though, as even when they have bench players in the game, the offense is completely focused around getting Jones or Johnson the basketball. Those two players take almost half the Cardinals shots.

Opponents are only averaging 61.8 points per game which is the primary indicator of how stout they are defensively. Opponents are shooting less than 40% from the floor against the Cardinals. One other favor opponents have done for Louisville is shoot only 61% from the line. This alone secured their victories over Seton Hall and Kentucky, both wins by a single basket.

The Cardinals commit only 19.4 fouls per game. Opponents still average over 19 free throw attempts per game, and 23.5 attempts in their two ACC games. They have averaged 22 fouls in their ACC games, so when only rotating 7 players those fouls become critical. Against Boston College, Louisville had 2 players foul out and two others finish with 4 fouls each.

As a team the Cardinals are shooting a 34% from the perimeter on only 16.6 attempts per game. Jones, Johnson, Davis and Nickelberry each attempt at least three shots from the perimeter per game. Nickelberry missed the first five games so its hard to determine what role he will have.

Louisville focuses on rebounding and have held a 44-28 edge in their two ACC contests. They have four players averaging more then six rebounds per game. Not surprisingly with the Pack Line defense, those four average five or more defensive rebounds.

Jones and Johnson are the primary distributors, averaging 9.1 assists between them. As you see both those names mentioned in almost every category you realize how critical it is for the Hokies to be very focused defending those two, making the rest of the team beat you.

The Hokies

The Hokies need to force Jones and Johnson off the ball with stiff defense, especially forcing them to try to drive to their oft hand side. Making those two uncomfortable makes the challenges of the offensive end easier to overcome.

The Hokies should focus on shooting from the perimeter, getting Cone or Cattoor in rhythm will be critical to stretching Louisville away from the lane defensively, allowing Aluma and Mutts to find opportunities inside. Boston College managed to shoot 47% from outside against Louisville so there are cracks.

While Louisville plays stiff defense, they do not create many turnovers. The Hokies must focus on hitting first shots, as Louisville allows very few second chance opportunities.

YOU HAVE TO HIT YOUR FREE THROWS. The Hokies were a dreadful 62% from the line against Miami. In a game eventually decided by one basket, they left eight points at the line. Louisville shoots almost 75% from the line.

This is ACC play so a heavy dose of Bede, Boots, Aluma, Mutts and Alleyne with smaller doses of Cone and Cattoor, especially if they need to stretch the floor.

Highlight of the Miami Game

Hurricane Tears

In Closing

The Hokies score against the Cardinals by exploiting the open shooter when Louisville crashes down on the block. Fast, crisp passes make it the biggest challenge Louisville has faced from outside.

Cone and Cattoor have never been more important this season, as they help to disrupt everything Louisville tries to do defensively. Getting the ball to Aluma or Mutts at the block, setting up pick and rolls with Radford or allowing in-out kickout passes.

Hokies outscore Louisville in a slugfest and win ugly again 70-67.

HOKIES!!!

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

I would love for your prediction to be right, but I am very afraid of the zebras in Louisville.

I dont disagree, Louisville bagmen carry large suitcases. It could well be 5 on 8 tonight.

One other piece that I think is critical is something Brian touched on HERE

He doesn't do it all the time, but he picks his spots to grab a board and zoom down the court. He beat the Hurricanes down the floor twice, and in a game that eventually came down to a one possession, one could argue that Radford's heads up plays were the deciding factor.

Radford getting those couple baskets each game likely will be a tipping point in many ACC games, tonight included

Next on the ACCN just after Spurtle and Kickerball, we give you the REMOO bracelet

People wondering if 2021 is gonna be different from 2020. The realest sign that things are gonna be different and good things are coming is if VT beats Louisville tonight

Edit: For clarity, I took out a part of my joke. I made the initial comment before a bunch of yokels rioted and broke into the US Capitol so I don't want anyone to think I was joking about that travesty

Almost Game time folks. Get Popping!!

And then they throw the ball away 3 times.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

This camera angle is from the Google maps satellite

Nobody in the stands and they still can't get a good angle.

It's agonizing watching us be so sloppy with the ball sometimes... already given up 6 easy points because of it.
Either way it's looking like a good shooting night! Let's Go!! Win!!

I think we're having problems passing because the camera angle is different. Must be screwing the guys up

Edit: lol didn't see the comment above. I hate this and dukes camera angle

These bounce passes on the perimeter are killing me. Just agonizing to see us play so sloppy

It's crazy that CMY has two completely different teams... and somehow they both show up to the same game.

Is coronavirus over yet?

Short of Aluma we struggle to find an offense effectively for a full game. Alleyne and radford will be needed otherwise this could get ugly with our limited scoring

Why are we dancing around the perimeter? And who put a lid on the basket? We need to be bangin the paint.

Louisville is doing a good job of making us let the wrong player shoot.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

Louisville is doing a good job of making us let the wrong player shoot Bede shoot

Is coronavirus over yet?

Bede seems like the only Hokie willing to take a shot, everyone else besides Cone is passing up opportunities

I guess travel calls can only be called one way...

I'm not a basketball guru at all but this teams struggles to create much to my eyes.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Unfortunately not many of this team can take their man off the dribble. I think for a couple of them its a mental block. If I was CMY right now, Bamisile needs to go in the game with a green light to drive, with pop option to Cone.

He is very very tall I'm not sure how I feel about a tall hokie

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I know I how I feel... HAPPY! Now that we're in ACC play we'll need his height and length. This is his first game back. Hopefully he'll get back in the groove and his minutes will increase.

I seldom speak to loluva grads, but when I do, I tell them I want large fries.

looks like he has packed on some weight, and I'm not sure if it's all good weight... he looked a little slow out there compared to last season.
Still glad to see him back on the court. He will get his legs back under him with more minutes.

Giving up the offensive rebounds is killing us, at least a third of their points are off second chances and another thiird off turnover transition

Jalen Cone is good at shooting the round ball in the hoop from a long way.

Fire Whit.

Cone is keeping us in the game but some lazy defending and sloppy passing have cost us dearly.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

yeah, the margin is basically those 3 TO in a row for 6pts.

Or if you want to give Louisville credit for creating one of those steals then make it 2 sloppy TO for 4pts plus a couple missed FT's

Our offense looks lost today. Why cant we get inside?

My wife takes the kids and leaves the house while I watch my Hokie games.........nuff said

tall/long defenders who can guard multiple positions. plus pack line principles that clog the middle

This is what Louisville does. They want to force you into the toughest five footer possible. Its a version of the Pack Line defense but they focus most on Pack Lane. It doesnt help that most of this team lacks either the confidence to drive all the way to the rim or the ball handling skill to do so.

Would love to see Radford and Bamisile up top, with Cone drifting, Aluma down low and either Alleyne or Cattoor on the other side.

That doesnt make any sense to what im talkin about...we dont have ANY players even tryin to run to/through the paint? I get that maybe they deny that entry pass but no one is even trying! We are stamdin around the arc playing with ourselves and just turning it over!

My wife takes the kids and leaves the house while I watch my Hokie games.........nuff said

This is where Alleyne, Radford and if given the chance Bamisile provide something that most dont. This is also where Diarra opting out hurts us. The others dont have the handle or the confidence to try to penetrate.

Rob Peterson

Their second chance points are what's killing us. They've outscored us 14 to 4 points in the paint. They've only outrebounded us by one but they've shot 7 more shots than us. This has resulted in 4 more made field goals.

I seldom speak to loluva grads, but when I do, I tell them I want large fries.

what the hell is wrong with aluma

BUMP WTF

seems tired, missing that spring in his step

This team is so sloppy it hurts to watch. Bede and bounce passes are the new QB draws

amazing to me that we look so flat and tired coming off a long break

of course right after I post that NGuessan, Alleyne and Cone all make high energy plays and the Hokies cut the lead to single digits

Big opportunity to showcase the program is falling flat in a big way....

Not that big a showcase... "national" broadcast on ACCN...

Wow bullshit offensive foul call on mutts when it went the other way against him on other side

He's a bit loose with the ball for my liking but he's better than bede shooting tonight atleast so maybes its a gamble worth taking

Starting to believe there's an actual curse in play here we can't get closer than 6 and everytime we do they hit a three

Are we allergic to the paint tonight? Zero presence inside makes it easy for louisville

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Alleyne has hit multiple floaters in the lane in the 2nd half. Agree that there hasn't been much from Aluma inside - Louisville is doing a great job of denying entry passes

Double bonus from here on out. Drive it

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

It's like they're all too timid to go up and get it and the opposing player just sneaks in and grabs it.

down to the wire.. what a 2nd half

Would've like to see Cone be more assertive and take that last shot. Heck of an effort though to almost pull it out

If we were gonna go for the win, I wish it wasn't Curry range, but with no timeouts Catoor didn't think to at least drive to the basket.

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

I was kind of surprised Radford didn't get that last shot. But he was off shooting last night and maybe they didn't want to risk it.

Not a great final possession but atleast we got it close again. Would've liked to see cattoor look for cone there. Good heart getting back into it but we need to start playing more complete games and stop creating too many deep holes to dig out of everytime.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Would have loved to have stolen that W. How much time was left when Hunter took that shot? Really wish we could have saved 1 more timeout there to set up something a little better.

Too many sloppy passes cost the Hokies tonight. If you are going to pass, do it, dont hesitate float it. Enough with the bounce passes on the perimeter, especially after you have given it away multiple times. Wanted to throw my phone across the room so many times with how they were passing the ball.

Alleyne in the second half was a bright spot because he did what you have to do against Louisville, which is penetrate to create. Everyone else was to hesitant in so many aspects.

I would have loved to see Catoor drive all the way in at the end to tie. Still, I remember many Hokie seasons where it would come down to the wire, we had the final possession and we _couldn't even get a SHOT off_. Our guys stuck with it tonight (especially loved Mutts staying intense in the first half) and we were 3 points away from playing like garbage and *still* winning.

One of the worst final possessions I've ever seen and honestly comes down to Catoor being a really slow dribbler. Anyone else other than him should've gotten the ball and taken it to the rim. 5.5 seconds is just enough time to get there
