Hokies not in initial NCAA Tournament rankings, in the discussion though

The NCAA Tournament committee has debuted their current Top 16 selections and the Hokies are not surprisingly on the outside looking in.

The NET and KenPom rankings being in the 30's obviously plays a big factor. People like the Hokies but the computers don't. Not really a major concern as the Hokies are still considered a 6-8 seed in most prediction brackets.

The biggest concern for the Hokies at this point is the significant layoff they are facing and being able to stay game ready to pick up what's left of the season and tournaments.

We are 4-0 against top 25 teams. Fuck the ncaa

You can't count sub .500 Duke as a quality win...

We're 3-1 vs. tourney teams, with 3 losses vs non-tourney teams. We're in the 30s in the analytics. You don't actually think we belong in the top 16, do you?

Could you reconcile how a vote of the AP sports writers has us top 25 but you don't?

Free Hugh

Easy, the AP sports writers don't have a fucking clue. And it was a theoretical top 16 that was released.

Lol fair I guess

Computers don't have feelings, people do. Recency factor and splash factor go a long way with people. Computers just run calculation based on parameters set by research into the importance of different aspects of the game. Scroll to my comment on us being mentioned again. In it is the point where no team since KenPom came into use has won a title ranked lower than 21st in KenPom.

Our wins over Villanova and Virginia were big splashes with the people voters.

In basketball, has there been any study of AP poll vs computers at predicting success

Free Hugh

I haven't seen one but I would imagine Ken Pomeroy has run some kind of comparison.

We have wins over most likely Elite 8/Final 4 teams. If the computers don't like that well their AI is just plain STHUUUPID

If not him Sagarin probably has done it.

When did I give my top 25? We're talking about the top 16 the ncaa put out. Neither I, nor the NCAA, nor the AP, nor the analytics have us top 16.

Wait, is the NCAA tournament limited to 16 teams due to COVID??? I haven't really been following NCAABB this year...

No

No, it's still 64 teams, all games being played in Indianapolis. There are discussions regarding conference tournaments being cancelled to allow Tournament teams to Quarantine prior to the tourney.

The committee started publishing its Top 16 in the second week of Feb starting in 2015. Seems more like justifying the committee's existence rather than benefitting anyone. It would be better if they published last 8 in and last 8 out, although the conference champion guarantee makes even that just pure speculation.

Wait... then why does it matter that we're not top 16?

It doesn't, but it's something to discuss where the Hokies are prominently mentioned. Dead period of normal basketball with the two weeks off now.

Logged in to confirm the attitude "Fuck the NCAA". Bunch of overpaid employees who get paid crazy salaries for hosting a basketball tourney.

Pour some Beer on it

Yeah not surprised they weren't on one of the top 4 lines. Seeding has always been a bit of a mystery to me though.

Our current AP ranking is outside the 16 regardless, most of our computer rankings are in the 30's.

The good news is that most of the articles are talking about the Hokies, so the team is on everyone's minds as those teams on the cusp that might have been slighted. Florida State is in the same boat which makes that game all that much more important if it's able to be played.

I expect us to be on the top line with an 8 out better, I would think we are in contention for a 5-6 right now. Also feels like a year we have a shot at the ACC title as well, so hopefully the tournament goes down. I would be up for only the top 8 in the ACC making the conference tourney as well.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Being a top 4 seed in a region would be going to far if you were to assess things today like the committee was tasked to do. While our record on its face is good and we do have a some good wins (UVA, Nova, etc), those other teams they listed are on a tier above us if you really want to break things down top to bottom. We're not dramatically worse, but they're better right now. Now if we're able to play the rest of the season out (fingers crossed no more covid issues) and pick up some wins, we should be worthy of jumping into that top 16 group.

If things go badly the rest of the way (and it could if the layoff leads to a lot of rust), I still think we'll be hovering around the bubble and our good wins should be enough for us to squeak in. Most likely though I think we'll be somewhere between the 5 and 8 line which is excellent considering where we're out since a new coaching staff taking over. Going back in time, a realistic projection would have this year being marginal growth, something like the NIT and maaaaybe flirting with the bubble. We've already blown past that marker. This has been a good season no matter how is shakes out. Obviously you'd still like to finish strong, I'm just saying keep that perspective in mind

Virginia Tech (14–4, 8–3 ACC)
Mike Young has done a commendable job in Blacksburg to get the Hokies to a top-20 ranking in Year 2, and Keve Aluma has been a revelation, but a national title in 2021 seems a bridge too far. Virginia Tech checks in at No. 34 on KenPom, with neither its offense nor defense ranking higher than 36th. While time remains to improve that, every champ in the KenPom era has entered the tournament within the top 21 on at least one end.
