Some of these have been really tough decisions. I love Flight of the Intruder but can I really vote for that over Platoon? Others are quite easy (Operation Dumbo Drop? Really?)
Field of Lost Shoes is probably not the greatest movie in the world, but if you've ever spent a few hours at the New Market Battlefield and the Virginia Museum of the Civil War, then you will certainly enjoy it.
Good stuff
Not sure which version of All Quiet on the Western Front is being rated, but I picked it assuming it was the Richard Thomas/"John-Boy" version, which I thought was Tony the Tiger-level, Grrreat!
Sadly, have not seen many in this bracket or only watched snippets of them on YouTube. Thank you for posting these. Once we get to the final few rounds I'll probably be using the results to pick which ones to watch. Not really that into movies, but you have had a lot of really good ones and I figure things that people pick highly will be worth watching. Saw a documentary on the Jadotville and found it fascinating as well as more than a bit sad given the way they were hung out to dry. The Canadians sent to Hong Kong right before the Japanese conquest was like that too. Just watched one on that.
1930 version
I have to go with Lawrence of Arabia. That movie was epic. I can watch it again and again.
1917 should be on there. That movie probably does the best job showing what it was like on the western front during the Great War.
I will admit there were a bunch in here that I had never heard of.
I saw Siege of Jadotville on Netflix. Good story, good action.
THIS IS SPARTA! Interesting adding a comic book movie, I like the possibilities this opens up
I included it because, even though a good portion of it is certainly comic-al, the battle scenes are good, the tactics of the phalanx are well presented and even the one on one fighting works.
Got some Virginia representation here!! Field of lost shoes is an amazing story
Don't forget, Cold Mountain features the battle of the crater.
Thanks for doing these, definitely an interesting diversion.
Happy Siege of Jadotville was included for consideration, but up against Black Hawk Down? Thanks for playing, see you next year.
Also I thought for sure it'd be Good Morning Vietnam against Stripes.
Stripes was eliminated from consideration because it wasn't taking place during an actual shooting war.
Is Zulu going to make an appearance?
That's a classic, excellent movie.
this one was actually very easy for me.
Cold Mountain....only b/c I haven't seen lost shoes
Flight of the Intruder...though not knocking Platoon, I would just watch Flight of Int over Platoon if they were on at the same time.
The Deer Hunter...Hamburger Hill is decent but deniro and walken?? This is this.
Good Morning Vietnam...there is no question
Black Hawk Down...enjoyed the Siege at Jadotville, but America, more recent and better action.
Lawrence of Arabia....just amazing what he did on his own
Gallipoli...haven't seen The Red Baron but I enjoy Gallipoli
300...just better imo.
Northeast bracket is in the books.
Cold Mountain got past Field of Lost Shoes 30-16.
Platoon said AMF to Flight of the Intruder 40-7.
Deer Hunter took one shot and killed Hamburger Hill 24-20.
Good Morning Vietnam carried the day against Operation Dumbo Drop 43-4.
Black Hawk Down obliterated Siege of Jadotville 48-1.
All Quiet on the Western Front outlasted Lawrence of Arabia 34-12.
The Red Baron shot down Gallipoli 24-21.
300 did what Persia could not and took down Alexander 40-8.
Voting is still open in the Southeast bracket until tomorrow morning. Round 2s will begin on Monday, with proper seeding.
