4 and 5 is tough. 2 and 7 is as well. I'd struggle with those.

Just wait until the matchups next week.

I know that more popular titles rated higher in this bracket will win, but I feel based on movie impact that OJW and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World should be the big upset winners. Those movies are just really great.

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

I agree.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

I have a feeling that a lot of my favorite movies won't be making it out of this round.

Hate this FMJ and Master and Commander matchup.

Master and Commander is excellent from start to finish. FMJ is an all time overrated movie IMO. Pyle and Gny. Sgt. Hartman carry the first half of the movie, and rightfully so. But that seems to be what we all remember. It's just not that great of a movie.

I agree. Not my favorite Nam movie.

VTCC '86 Delta Co., Peru Hokie, Former Naval Aviator, Former FBISA, Forever married to my VT87 girl. Go VT!

Also agree. Platoon, Apocalypse now, etc are all better war movies for the same era.

Woof. Bad take here. The entire movie holds up, the parts in Vietnam just aren't as quotable. Kubrick is kind of brilliant in how he structures it so that the longer you watch and the more fucked up shit happens, the less impact it has on you as a viewer, just like the longer Joker spends in Vietnam, the less of a reaction he has to events around him, and the horrors of war just become more and more normalized.

I disagree. I think Kubrick went so hard towards the artistic that he forgot that films are also for entertainment. I get your point about Joker becoming desensitized, but the character development just isn't shown very well. As mentioned above, there are other Vietnam period movies that do a better job. FMJ has some great cinematography (as did 2001: ASO, which for the record I also think is overrated), but the actual plot, character development suffer for the sake of the "art"

Here is a good read:

Agree, I have seen FMJ once. It was enough. But everybody is entitled to their own opinion.

Even if it is wrong. :)

Southwest Bracket is closed for voting and the results are in.

Braveheart speared the Rough Riders 61-9
Gettysburg ended the Kingdom of Heaven 36-34
Full Metal Jacket ripped through Master and Commander 52-18
Outlaw Josey Wales ragnaroked Apocalypse Now 44-25.

Dang it! Knew I should have stuffed the ballot box for Kingdom of Heaven.

That was a quality 4 v 5 matchup though.

Had the same thought.
