Was looking at Mel Kiper's most recent Draft Board and he had Farley going 12th to the 49ers, but at the bottom mentioned Farley is scheduled for back surgery this week. Going to be interested to see if it impacts his stock any.

I think he may drop a little but not out of the first round. Rosenhaus wouldn't leak this if he didn't think it was in Farley's best interest. He's been around the block more than a few times.
To be honest. it would be hard to keep it under wraps if he is missing Pro Day because of it.

Yeah, if you are going to Opt Out last year, you would think he would get it done beforehand and then have the whole year to rest and get back into shape.
Timing for this struck me as very odd.
A lot of hospitals weren't allowing elective surgeries during early stages of covid because they wanted to keep space available in case they needed it for covid patients. Not sure if that affected the timing of his surgery but it's a possibility.
Is this from a recent training injury? He hasn't played a snap of football in 15 months, if this is something from the 2019 season, surely they could have found a better time to fit it in
Maybe this contributed to him not playing last season? He still wasn't quite right? Maybe better to opt out rather than play a season with nagging injuries.
He was just mentioned on Dan Patrick. Said he was excellent in coverage but doesn't like to tackle.
Maybe strategic by his agent, maybe he feels like Farley's stock has peaked and there's only downside to having him participate in a pro day.
I'm curious to see where he goes in the draft its been ages since he played a live game and the tape was good from his last season but I would think his health record and time away from the field might eventually scare a few off. I'd love to see him go early but for a first rounder he needs to be a contributor right away and the next question is what kind of recovery time will he need from this surgery?

Did he use local/team surgeons for his back because there seems to consistent issues with every surgery that is performed in the region on VT football players.
There's a lot of chatter going on around twitter that this is Farley's second back surgery since the end of the 2019 season. My understanding was that he dealt with back spasms and had an injury that goes back to pre-season 2019, missed the last two games of 2019 (UVA and Kentucky, sigh), and this surgery is to correct that. Farley then opted out. I don't recall there being a surgery after the 2019 season.
Anyone have the low-down?

Edit: this is definite proof he's had two, but it's not clear when that first surgery happened?

Guessing the first back surgery was after the 2019 season but we didn't hear about it til now? I'd have thought that our best player getting back surgery would have been a news item at some point (like it is now).
A year ago Farley was still on the team. There's a good chance Fuente chose not to divulge this info to the press.
I agree that the timing of the disclosure is a bit strange, but it is possible that was a strategic move by Farley and Drew Rosenhaus.
I really hope Farley's back is going to be ok and that he gets drafted to a team that he can have the most success with. As Richard Sherman said in an interview with Farley, the team situation is way more important than the draft position.

fwiw, it's most likely we would have all been sad to hear that Farley wasn't participating in 2020 spring ball as he was recovering from a procedure, or perhaps more vague discussion regarding his back injury that kept him out of the final two games of 2019 season (UVA and UK, uglycry.gif)... but then the pandemic cancelled everything in the spring and Farley opted out for 2020 to boot.

probably not significantly, or at least it shouldn't but the 49ers just traded the mother load to apparently draft Mac Jones so I'm not chalking up NFL teams to being super rational, its just another note on his profile, I had already seen some mocks having him slip into the late teens-early 20s so it wouldn't be shocking to have him fall another 5 spots or so
There was a Reddit thread I was reading this morning about the wacky "red flags" that GMs have come up with in the past that shouldn't really be red flags. Like Marcus Mariota having no red flags was a red flag itself or Myles Garrett having an interest in dinosaurs.
So while not all GMs are going to be superstitious or have weird things that bother them, I'm guessing there are at least some of them thinking of "when" and not "if" another unfortunate thing happens to Farley.
Miles Garrett having an interest in dinosaurs has a direct corellation to him going pre-historic on Mason Rudolph. Change my mind.

To be fair, he is about to be drafted into the NFL, and start making bank playing a kids game that he loves...he's had a lotta hardships for sure, but that is a pretty decent break that he is about to catch

Stepped away from the team before the season because he believed we weren't taking COVID seriously enough and was concerned he would contract it.
Tests positive the week of the draft and will be in quarantine when his name is (hopefully) said.
My first thought and this is so damn cynical, was that this was a ploy to get him out of going to the live event because they think he's going to fall out of the first round. Overall, this kid has had some rotten luck since high school (mom's death, ACL tear, multiple back surgeries, opt-out, and now this?) I really just hope he kills it in the NFL.
If I am a GM, I am concerned that he has literally missed everything since playing in 2019. No spring, no 2020 season, no pro day, no mingling at the draft. What is up? It isn't his fault, but damn.
The NFL is weird. Sometimes, they can treat a player like Farley by throwing him every bone possible to get him out of these unlucky situations. Or, it's a red flag.
Knowing that he's #1/2 DB on just about every team's draft boards based on articles/releases/mock drafts, the GMs are not worried, and will try their best to get his situation straightened out.

Two positives and one negative. This is strange. I do not trust Drew Rosenhaus with anything that has been said.
Not that strange. The testing is far from reliable and the sensitivity standards are inconsistent (and often nonsensical).
If he falls, I hope the Panthers can either trade into the back of the first round* or get him at 8 in the second round.
*Only if they trade down from 8 and pick up extra picks
