I'm curious where some of the opt-outs from last year will go. Will teams discount them for taking a year off, not knowing if they stayed in shape and got professional level coaching? Hope Caleb doesn't drop in the 1st round too far.

I think Caleb's multiple back surgeries and sitting out last year will hurt him. I hope I am wrong through. I know some GMs are going to be wary since he hasn't played a snap of ball since 2019, no combine, no pro day. Valid or not, I think he gets the "not durable" flag put on him.

No value for DE at 11, best player available all day, even if it means drafting to a strength. We all scratched our heads at the JPP pick when the team already had Tuck, Osi, and Kiwanuka, but that move was a huge piece of the XLVI win.
basically, don't shy away from WR/LB/DB even though we just brought in Golladay/Martinez+Fackrell/Bradberry+Jackson the last two years in FA. Don't shy away from OT even though we just took Andrew Thomas last year.

Such a weird draft. Super top heavy with prospects at QB and WR, but probably the weakest DL draft in as long as I can remember, especially for EDGE guys. Not a ton of surefire iDL guys either. Barmore definitely has crazy upside, but not super polished.

5 QB, 5 WR, 5 CB, and 3 OT (maybe 4 depending where Leatherwood sticks), for a total of 18 (19). A little surprised to see some of the DE/Edge types go at the end of the first, a few seemed like reaches to me but time will tell. I thought there would be another 1-2 WRs for sure, super deep draft there.

Draft Day is always so fun. As if there wasn't enough buzz around teams taking QBs in the first round, now you have reports coming out that A A Ron Rodgers doesn't want to play for the Packers anymore. Fun to have sports drama to be talking about again.
As for my Eagles, if Roseman doesn't end up with a top end WR or Corner tonight he might need to have a guy on payroll to start his car for him moving forward given how little faith Birds fans currently have with him.

College football is a completely different game now with spread offenses and 80 plays a game. Heavy I-formation and 55 plays a game were common 20-25 years ago.

Something I only became re-familiar with recently about Kyle Pitts. The #Hokies landed James Mitchell in that class, btw. They seem to know what they're doing when they target tight ends. pic.twitter.com/MzyyBJQ0Tuβ Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) April 30, 2021

I did some work for Mike Singletary Jr in Fayetteville NC some years ago and he told me one of the best stories I've ever heard about a guy getting to the pros... that guy was Joe Horne.
About Jaycee: I think the differences between Horn and Surtain are almost negligible with Surtain probably more technically sound. Jayce is a physical guy and I think he'll be very good for the Panthers.

OK, my comment was a bit harsh. It was late, alcohol was involved.
But his messaging at the time was a bit mixed.
I'm glad he and Darrisaw got picked in the first round. That can only help the Hokies going forward.
Also, he was picked as the third CB, not the first, which was my point.
And: Aged milk = cream and cheese. I like both...
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
And Howie did it for just a third. Dallas wanted one of the two corners, and once they were both gone. They didn't need a WR.
I think Birds fans will love Smith. I've heard people call him a football version of Allen Iverson. Slightly undersized, but uber talented and big chip on his shoulder.
If he doesn't pan out it won't be for lack of trying.
And it looks like the Giants would have taken Smith at 11 if he had been there, which would have been a great pick to pair with Golladay and Saquon (and Engram).

Titans fan in me is pretty pumped. I was mostly wanting a receiver but as Farley started to slip, I started to get excited. The back injury does concern me a bit but its too good a chance to pass up. He's a top 10 talent there at 22.

Urban was giving quotes tonight that they were gonna use Etienne as compliment back to Robinson AND Carlos Hyde. This dude really just wasted a 1st round pick on a 3rd down back. LOLJAGS
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Urban isn't ready for the NFL and it's already starting to show. We need OL, DL,LB, S and maybe WR, and he drafts a RB that I don't think will be that good in the NFL (not to mention why draft a RB at all in the 1st round anymore plenty of value later).
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
So was Saban. But the draft is just one example, the Iowa Strength coach hiring, bringing in Tebow for a workout at TE. Add him to Shad Khan who is among the worst owners for players and I don't see the Jags going anywhere.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The Saban example isn't fair; there's a lot of people who believe Saban would've won big in the NFL if he was able to get Drew Brees (who he wanted but couldn't get miami doctors to medically clear him).
That said, I tend to agree about Urban Meyer. Not only does he seem out of touch, but I'm not sure he'll be able to motivate players who have other options. He's just not going to have the same level of control that he had at Florida; who knows if he can actually out coach someone in the NFL.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I don't know if his health is going to ne able to withstand close games 16 weeks straight. He may just pump up the happy pills and mirror the Old Ball Coach's NFL stint in Washington.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
That's what the Fullcast was saying - this dude has migraines after every loss, and heart attacks if he loses 2-3 games in a season... Some of the best teams in the NFL will still lose 5 games/season. If he goes 9-7, that will be an amazing result, but is going to be able to mentally/physically handle 7 losses?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Just when you think the Jags cant screw it up they go and take a big reach on a position they dont need to add at. This will be fun to see if Meyer can succeed at that dumpster fire of a team.

Herbert's face on Farley's drop down is up there too....
You'd think that they could put a little effort in posting those pics.... If they are going to confuse players at least they could have just switched Caleb and Divine (they at least play similar positions)...

I've always wondered how this happens. My guess is that someone is querying a huge database, and messes up the query, pulling the wrong image. I doubt there's someone manually updating all of these headshots.

As a Packers fan I don't understand where this sentiment continues to come from. They were the NUMBER ONE offense in football last year. Just because Allen Lazard and MVS aren't household high-draft pick type names doesn't make them mediocre players.

Kyle Pitts is amazing, but a TE went 4th?!?! Thats not normal.
Smith was not the first Bama reciever off the board?
Steelers almost got a hokie, but didn't :(
Etienne going in the first round was a huge surprise to me. I haven't been that surprised since Trent Richardson went very high. I think Etienne will be better than Trent though, but low bar there.

Oh I know what type of player he is, but in the last 50 years no TE has gone in the top 5. Only ~10 went in the first round. Up until last night Kicker, Punter, Center and Tight end were the only positions to not go in the top 5 in the last 50 drafts. My note was more of the historical nature of the pick not any critic of Pitts.

This is true. Here's hoping he leverages that fact on the recruiting trail.

The only previous time that Virginia Tech landed two selections in the first round of the same NFL Draft was in 2018 when LB Tremaine Edmunds went 16th overall to Buffalo and his brother, Terrell, went 28th overall to Pittsburgh. That would mark four first-round picks for the Hokies in the past four drafts, a total only six other schools can top over that span β Alabama (18), Ohio State (8), LSU & Georgia (7) and Clemson (6).
Hopefully this pays some dividends on the recruiting trail...

i feel bad for Darrisaw. Bama having a draft eligible tackle cost him a few million. Nevermind if nobody had the Bama guy on their board or if the guy can play or not- he was graded much lower than Darrisaw, but he played at Bama, and that was enough for Mayock. Tough luck for Big Chris.

I agree with your point in general, but the difference between the 17th and 23rd pick in terms of rookie contracts is "only" $1M - $14.4m vs $13.4. A majority of that is the difference in the signing bonus ($700k) , but at least our boy just got $7.1M in bonus once he signs his name.
And if Darrisaw ends up being a better pro, which I think he will be, then it will be irrelevant.
But again, agree with you that Mayock loves the name of the school as much if it more than the player

Happy with the Browns pick, they got help at a position of need, didn't have to give up anything and move up, and didn't reach for a player. I thought SF, Carolina, Wash, Shittsburgh, LV, and Jax (2nd) pick, were bad picks given who was available. I think Eagles, Pats, Chi, and Cle got what they needed at good value.

3 ACC teams had players drafted in the 1st round yesterday(Clemson, Miami, VT). Each of those 3 teams had 2 players each. VT was the first to have both players drafted.
Clemson picks #1 and #25
Miami picks #18 and #30
VT picks #22 and #23
Hope to see more Hokies in the next couple days getting paid.

I know some of these guys were just plain good anyway, but I wonder how much a specific player has influence on a draft decision. Cinci went and got Chase who played with Burrow, Dolphins got Waddle for Tua, Etienne could arguably be a reach at that point to be a blanket for Trevor, DeVonta going to Philly with Hurt, Mac Jones going from one Sith Lord to another. Curious to know if what the ease of transition/existing locker room chemistry plays a factor for guys who all straight up balled out in college played a factor in team destination.

I don't usually watch the draft as closely as I did this year, but I noted the same, and wondered how typical it was. Im wondering if the limited availability for work-outs and the wacky seasons sort of prompted teams to go with fan pleasing type selections. Picks that would create "buzz" and goodwill over pure talent evaluation.
According to the article below, 1st round QBs and WRs are worse than a coin flip in terms of odds of panning out as highly productive players. Perhaps these college pairings are an attempt to improve those odds. Or perhaps GMs just believe the goodwill with fans is a higher return outcome than trying to catch lightning in a bottle.
Mac Jones going to the Pats is no surprise. Really the only surprise was that they didn't have to make a move up to get him.
The connection between Belichick and Saban is no secret, to the point that Finebaum on his show has said that Belichick is getting lazy and outsourcing his talent scouting to Nick at this point.
Smith to Philly would have happened whether Hurts was there or not. The others is definitely think there was some internal conversation with those players already on the team. But in a case like Cincy, Chase is a beast, it's just helpful that he and Burrow know each other well.

I really don't understand some teams. Broncos trade up for a RB, which I think will be a good back, but there are tons of guys out there and RBs dont last long in the league.

Points on Freeman, Rouse and Boykin are 100% valid! But Freeman last played for GB in '03 (when most of the current college seniors were like 4 years old). Rouse last played for the Packers in '09 (side note, I've met Aaron a couple of times, he's a great dude and really easy to have a conversation with), and Boykin couldn't seem to work his way up the depth chart. it feels like the last 3-5 years, all the other NFC North teams have had a Hokie contribute in a meaningful way. But really, this is just coming from a reeling Hokie and Packer fan, I'll go weep softly into my hands now and stop bothering the community lol

also fwiw kyle fuller signed the offer sheet with the packers when he was transition tagged and that forced the bears to match... so he tried to go to green bay

Could be working on an alternate deal, though generally not a great sign. Rashaan Evans though is an example of a guy that isn't having his fifth year option picked up but they are (allegedly) working on a new contract for.

Saw a post/tweet somewhere that this was a 'locker room' hire. Bring someone in who knows how Meyer likes things run, knows Meyers playbook/lingo and could give the new coach 'insight' on what's really going on in the locker room. Not sure how NFL guys are going to react to an obvious coaches plant but that's the best explanation that I've seen so far.

good chance he's just there to be rah-rah and help engage/energize the fanbase during camp, won't make the team for the season. expect some quotes from Tebow about how Trevor Lawrence is a true leader, the real deal, so on.

That is a lot of money for a man that has barely played the position (relatively speaking). It goes to show you how much NFL values potential and measurables. I hope he stays healthy and has a great career. I really enjoyed his limited time in O&M.

A source said that Darrisaw will sign his contract before the team begins Friday afternoon a three-day rookie minicamp. The Virginia Tech product will get a four-year, $13.35 million contract and will have an option for a fifth year. He will receive a $7.066 million signing bonus, and will count $2.426 million on the 2021 salary cap.

Sounds like there may be some major shakeups in terms of teams trading up for one of the five QB's.
Not that it would be shocking, but there have been a couple of personnel moves and some whispers trickling out the last 48 hours that suggest we may have some chaos incoming tonight.
I'm curious where some of the opt-outs from last year will go. Will teams discount them for taking a year off, not knowing if they stayed in shape and got professional level coaching? Hope Caleb doesn't drop in the 1st round too far.
I listened to McShay and Daniel Jeremiah on PMT this week and both seemed to think it wouldn't matter.
Just hoping my Giants can pick an impact player, I'd like to get a impact DE, but the DE class is average this year. Hopefully JJ is the main guy making the pick instead of Gettleman...
No value for DE at 11, best player available all day, even if it means drafting to a strength. We all scratched our heads at the JPP pick when the team already had Tuck, Osi, and Kiwanuka, but that move was a huge piece of the XLVI win.

I agree with you, I'd love to solidify our offensive line for years to come at 11, but the right piece has to be there.
I wouldn't mind WR either, as I feel like Sterling is getting a little long in the tooth. Slayton is good, but I think he's more of a WR3.
I'd love to get Basham in the 2nd round to sure up the DE spot.
Not bad, Tyreek comparisons, a #1 for next year and extra pick this year and next year as well. Not bad. Now let's get into these trenches.
I'm excited about Draft Day for our guys making the leap but also so I can stop getting Mock Draft articles in my newsfeeds.
Amen to that! I was on the verge of changing email addresses it was getting so ridiculous.
Such a weird draft. Super top heavy with prospects at QB and WR, but probably the weakest DL draft in as long as I can remember, especially for EDGE guys. Not a ton of surefire iDL guys either. Barmore definitely has crazy upside, but not super polished.
good chance that something like 20-22 of the first round picks are represented by four positions: QB, WR, CB, and OT
5 QB, 5 WR, 5 CB, and 3 OT (maybe 4 depending where Leatherwood sticks), for a total of 18 (19). Rogers wants out.
Kyle Pitts is real damn good.
Great offensive tackle and corner draft. Awful DL. If a team takes a DL tonight, it is a bad pick.
I am expecting Darrisaw to go at 14 if he lasts that long. Hoping Farley goes to the Browns.
Lots of good WR also. 4 or 5 of them will go in the 1st
Did the Commish just say "Brownie fans"?
What a douche
He was a douche LONG before he said "Brownie fans"
Could Danny boy have two good drafts in a row for WFT? That would be quite the change
How does a guy with 318 passing attempts get drafted 3rd?
At the FCS level, no less
Apparently the Niners thought he was the "smartest QB" in the draft and loved his testing
We had a guy with 343 passing attempts get drafted #1, just sayin'.
College football is a completely different game now with spread offenses and 80 plays a game. Heavy I-formation and 55 plays a game were common 20-25 years ago.
#TEU? /s (cries in mediocrity π)
Man I didn't know that. He might have won a few games for us himself
it was a big sad when he picked UF
A sad that is all too familiar anymore.
Horn at 8 is the first shocker of the draft. I can see someone being worried about Farley's back, but Horn over Surtain feels like a reach.
Side note:
I did some work for Mike Singletary Jr in Fayetteville NC some years ago and he told me one of the best stories I've ever heard about a guy getting to the pros... that guy was Joe Horne.

I think he'll be good but 8th and first corner feels like a reach.
Horn at halftime of the Falcons game....

Farley thought opting out was smart, ....
Not so fast, my friend.....
You know how many of the players drafted already opted out? Farley is more related to medical questions.
It's 100% due to back injury prognosis
Yeah if Farley is being penalized for "opting out" it's that NFL teams don't think it was because of Covid and actually was his back.
Aged like milk.
OK, my comment was a bit harsh. It was late, alcohol was involved.

I thought aged milk = cottage cheese
which is why, to this day, I still cannot eat cottage cheese.
Dallas and Philadelphia made a trade that allowed the Eagles to draft DeVonta Smith
Can't even count the ways that this surprises me.
And Howie did it for just a third. Dallas wanted one of the two corners, and once they were both gone. They didn't need a WR.
I think Birds fans will love Smith. I've heard people call him a football version of Allen Iverson. Slightly undersized, but uber talented and big chip on his shoulder.

All three Edmunds brothers with Kay Jewelers commercial for their mom during the draft.
Anybody have a link to the Edmunds brothers' commercial??
Ouch for darrisaw on that pick. Alabama at its best there. Leatherwood held on every play they showed
Wow I thought for sure Miami would go Darrisaw there.

Back to back Hokies. Darrisaw to the Vikings.
BACK TO BACK
WOOOOOO!!!!!
Back to back Hokies!!
25 selections in, and...
Two Hokies! Heck yeah!
SIX from Bama? Day-yum.
Lawrence and Etienne, together again? Sure, why not? π€£
Etienne to Jags is just weird because James Robinson was GREAT last year.
I honestly have no idea what the Jags have, or need. It just seems like long odds for the two stars of one team to both go to the same team.
But it's so weird, it can just be crazy fun.
Urban was giving quotes tonight that they were gonna use Etienne as compliment back to Robinson AND Carlos Hyde. This dude really just wasted a 1st round pick on a 3rd down back. LOLJAGS

So was Saban. But the draft is just one example, the Iowa Strength coach hiring, bringing in Tebow for a workout at TE. Add him to Shad Khan who is among the worst owners for players and I don't see the Jags going anywhere.

Just when you think the Jags cant screw it up they go and take a big reach on a position they dont need to add at. This will be fun to see if Meyer can succeed at that dumpster fire of a team.
Bama had as many players drafted in the first round as the entire ACC.
Farley's face in Diablo's drop down on the best available list on ESPN. Reminiscent of the Andrew Ford graphic.
Still no WR for Rodgers in GB. If Rodgers moves on, going to be tough sledding for Jordan Love
As a Packers fan I don't understand where this sentiment continues to come from. They were the NUMBER ONE offense in football last year. Just because Allen Lazard and MVS aren't household high-draft pick type names doesn't make them mediocre players.
probably because Rodgers made MVS and Lazard look better than they are, and those two aren't the type of receiver who makes life easier for a QB
As a Packers fan myself, this is entirely fair. Especially MVS.
So is Deablo the only other Hokie that has a realistic shot of getting drafted?
Herbert!
Wow, I forgot about Juice. It's been a long day, I was sifting through the Overall ranks on ESPN and missed the logo for him
Some may even say he was already drafted (not photoshopped)

Some people don't think he'll get past the second round, I hope they're right
Kyle Pitts is amazing, but a TE went 4th?!?! Thats not normal.

Etienne going in the first round was a huge surprise to me. I haven't been that surprised since Trent Richardson went very high. I think Etienne will be better than Trent though, but low bar there.
Pitts was drafted because he is quite literally the best player in the draft.
They didn't take him to get in a 3 point stance and hold the edge for Mike Davis. He is going to get his targets.
Julio, Ridley, and now Pitts you have to cover on the same play.
Yikes. Too bad Fuck Matt Ryan is the QB, as I think he is in the downslope now, but I could complete passes to that trio.
Oh I know what type of player he is, but in the last 50 years no TE has gone in the top 5. Only ~10 went in the first round. Wait a second what about the 2004 draft? Didn't we get DHall and KJ in the first round?
"in the past four drafts"
The last four drafts part is just for the comparison to other teams
For fucks sake Alabama

i feel bad for Darrisaw.
Leatherwood is a great player. I figured Darrisaw would go before him, but as a Vikings fan I'm glad he fell to us.
3/4 were defensive players too.
With the 98th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints select...Divine Deablo, S, Virginia Tech
With the 148th pick, the Atlanta Falcons select...Khalil Herbert, RB, Virginia Tech
With the 238th pick, the Dallas Cowboys select...Justus Reed, DE, Virginia Tech
I've seen mocks with the Ravens getting a safety, wouldn't mind seeing Chuck and Divine back there on Sundays...
I'm just going off of the continued religious theme-ing plus the double alliteration of Saints Safety Divine Deablo
A Divine Deablo Raider.
I was right that he'd be called tonight
It's so perfect that divine deablo goes to the raiduhs...you can't make it up
Happy with the Browns pick, they got help at a position of need, didn't have to give up anything and move up, and didn't reach for a player. I thought SF, Carolina, Wash, Shittsburgh, LV, and Jax (2nd) pick, were bad picks given who was available. I think Eagles, Pats, Chi, and Cle got what they needed at good value.
Congrats to everyone selected yesterday. Hokies getting some good love/discussion on ACC Network this morning.
I'm surprised @HokieFootball Twitter hasn't picked up on that stat.
I don't think that's true. I don't think we had a player drafted in 2019.
Supplemental draft maybe? I have no idea and am still (supposedly) working so no time to research it.
Nobody taken.
Ricky Walker was UFA to Dallas, though

Elway got hit in the head alot during his playing days so...
some of those hits to the head were more famous than others:

PS: he's not the GM anymore...
Bookie Basham would have been great for the DL at Tech.
Alim McNeil would've been great too
He was a top recruit Boogie didn't even get a sniff of an offer from Wiles, and he is from Roanoke.
Bookie? Wouldn't want to owe him money...went to school with his dad-super nice guy
Deablo to the Raiders at pick 80.
I said it last night and I'll say it again...
DBU FAM!!!
Deablo to the Raiders
Deablo to the Raaaaaaiders
Deablo round 3 let's go!!!
Was just thinking....is this the 1st time a Hokie has been drafted by the Raiders?
The only player I can remember that suited up for them was DeAngelo Hall for a short stint.
Jake Grove
Welp, how did I forget Grove.
A guy like Kellen Mond getting picked before Herbert is a travesty
He was on Mel's best player board since mid way through the 2nd round (Monday that is)
My Giants have me so excited. Grab a Offensive lineman and get Khalil on the squad and I'll be a happy camper!
Super pumped to see Deablo go in the third. Hopefully Herbert will go soon. Would be awesome if he went in the 4th. Good draft for us so far.
Man I hope he makes the team, been waiting years for a Hokie to make it so i can get a new jersey....
Day 3... DRAFT
Washington took a Tight End. It seems as if he's more of a blocker than a pass catcher so hopefully he won't affect Logan's playing time.
Logan got a new contract recently he's gonna be just fine
12 RBs drafted so far, yet no Khalil Herbert (as of pick 198). I thought he'd be gone by now.
Really bizarre.
Herbert to Da Bears!
Herbert to Chicago!
What took you so long?
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Bears
My first reaction was Juice is great fit for any North team, but Chicago just feels right.
My 2nd reaction (above)
My third reaction - "oh shit, I'm a Vikings fan... the Bears have an offense that isn't offensive to watch any more"
As a Packers fan this draft has been a nightmare with Darrisaw going to the Vikings and Herbert to the Bears π€¦π»ββοΈ
At least the Packers guaranteed an A. Rodgers will be on the field this fall /s
I'm sure I'm wrong, but it seems like the hokies go to every team in the NFC North but Green Bay
(Yes yes, we have Yosh, but my point stands)
Antonio freeman my man!!! Packer hall of famer
Also Aaron rouse
XXXL Boykin spent some time there too.
You know, I never realized the nuance of that situation. That tidbit actually helps!
Two long snappers taken back to back...can't make it up
Reed getting a look from the Titans.
Hewitt getting a look with the Seahawks.
Wow! Long way from home for him. He's from Florida, correct? Anyways, good for him. Hope it works out. Hokies in the NFL is a good thing to see!
Bradburn invited to the Vikes minicamp
Wish he had come back for another year. Punter's and kickers have a hard time getting a foothold into the NFL.
Oscar Bradburn getting a look from the Vikings

Old Draft News: The Steelers will not exercise their option for a fifth year on Terrell Edmunds contract.
Could be working on an alternate deal, though generally not a great sign. Rashaan Evans though is an example of a guy that isn't having his fifth year option picked up but they are (allegedly) working on a new contract for.
Fuller as well correct?
Shout out by the Raiders, Bears, and Vikings

A great summary of the first round.
News report that Tebow is going to sign with the Jags as a TE.
Can't see how he makes the team, but Meyer really does think this is college.
Wanted to give his new neighbor a handout.
Sad he couldn't close on $13.5M. Maybe if he had played this season, he'd be sitting pretty with that extra $50k.

Who has 13.5 million toes and fingers to count? give the man an A for effort lol...
I'm shocked that some passionate VT football fans would have an opinion about the best player on defense trashing the schools covid protocols and sitting out the year. I can believe fans would even have an opinion on that. It's weird
FTFY.
That is a lot of money for a man that has barely played the position (relatively speaking). It goes to show you how much NFL values potential and measurables. I hope he stays healthy and has a great career. I really enjoyed his limited time in O&M.
