So this is pretty damn cool. Disney built a "real" lightsaber to use at their parks. Sounds like eventually you'll be able to buy one. Apparently it works by having two tape measure plastic strips that are wrapped with LEDs which are attached to an electric motor which extends them. Click the twitter link for a detailed thread. It won't melt through metal blast doors, or cut off your hand, but it does feature an illuminated blade that will extend and retract at the push of a button. It still staggers my imagination that the mouse paid over 4 billion dollars for Star Wars, and if they don't screw it up too much more, it will eventually seem like a bargain that ranks right up there with the Louisiana Purchase.

In this case I'm glad Disney couldn't land the Harry Potter theme park because it really helped push the entire industry forward.
Watched a documentary on it, and Disney had the opportunity to sign them, but they were not willing to let Rowling have creative say over the styling of the area, and were not going to allow it to be its own dedicated spot, and more of a themed ride. Universal's proposal would be that they would work with the writers and set designers from the movies to create an immersive experience that put you in the world of the movie.
Based on how much of a success Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley were in Universal Orlando, Disney realized they needed to up their game, which led them to taking that same approach with the Star Wars area.
That competition, which basically saved Universal from bankruptcy, ended up transforming the experience for the customer where everybody in the end was a winner.

As someone who knows way too much about roller coasters, Hagrids Motorbike in Hogsmeade is absolutely one of the coolest and best themed rides I have ever been on.

I haven't been on it, yet, but I will say I was super bummed to find out they had to take out Dueling Dragons/Dragin Challenge to build it. Those were my favorite rides the times I had been before.
Though, I have heard some really good things about the new one.
I also heard that Fast and Furious Supercharged and the Jimmy Fallon rides absolutely suck ass

Dueling Dragons was amazing but it was aged. There are certain rides where a total rehab is worth it and I don't think that was one of them. It was an old style B&M that they didn't feel like making parts for anymore. Always sad to see (most) coasters go, though. Hagrids being an Intamin replacing a B&M could shake some heads, but they have really stepped the game up in recent years. I am not too sure who did the thematic aspects of the ride but they work so well. The queue like itself is a really fun experience (which is becoming more and more necessary as lines for this particular one on a busy day when they were still a thing was around 4 hours)

Oh I know it was aged. They did what they could to make the old queue good, but yeah it paled in comparison to pretty much everything else in the park. I love the immersive queue areas that basically turn the wait into a part of the ride, though hearing the same video 40x before the Transformers ride does get old.
I've also heard sustained rumors that the Fear Factor area will soon be bulldozed so they can expand Diagon Alley into the Ministry of Magic with its own ride. That would be good, as the FF area is well past it's expiration date.
Last time we went was back in 2016 when the Incredible Hulk was torn down for replacement. Really made it obvious on just how few actual coasters that Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure have. Seeing them tear down Dragon Challenge shortly thereafter was sad just for the fact that it was another one biting the dust. I have only heard good things about the new one, though. Look forward to riding whenever we can get back, though that'll probably be a while to let the kids get old enough to ride most/all.

Going in July and my girlfriend who's ridden it before says the same thing (minus the intricate knowledge of coasters).
Also, it's not a roller coaster but the Rise of Resistance ride at Hollywood Studios in Disney World is one of the coolest rides I've ever been on. Combines a lot of different ride elements with some pretty cool Star Wars effects for a very unique experience.

Rise of the Resistance is such a cool concept too because it is a trackless dark ride. This type of technology could allow a ride like this to become mobile at some point. Just need a big open warehouse and a place to set everything up. On the technical side though, maint nightmare. So many thousands of things have to be in synch and calibrated.
