Unpopular Opinion: Bring back the (annual) WVU rivalry

College football is at it's best when regionally relevant games carry enough emotion to garner national interest. When two teams fight for shelf space at an interstate rest stop, you know that they hate each other, and you can feel that hate seeping through the television when they play. This is what college football is all about.

I became a Hokie in 2008, so I never really experienced the WVU rivalry. But this game makes too much sense to NOT have on the schedule. We should play WVU every year. It sucked losing yesterday, but I was more emotionally invested in beating WVU than I am most ACC teams. I don't hate WVU, but I want to. The more we play them, the more I can hate them.

My dream scenario would be a 10-to-12 team Appalachian Athletic Conference that includes some combination of Tennessee, App State, UVA, VT, Kentucky, Louisville, Cincy, WVU, Marshal, Pitt, and Penn State, but alas, this will never happen. I'm not opposed to extending an ACC invite to WVU, but I doubt the financial upside is strong enough to justify it.

So I say fuck it, let's put the mountainairs on the schedule every year.

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"
