Unpopular Opinion: Bring back the (annual) WVU rivalry

College football is at it's best when regionally relevant games carry enough emotion to garner national interest. When two teams fight for shelf space at an interstate rest stop, you know that they hate each other, and you can feel that hate seeping through the television when they play. This is what college football is all about.

I became a Hokie in 2008, so I never really experienced the WVU rivalry. But this game makes too much sense to NOT have on the schedule. We should play WVU every year. It sucked losing yesterday, but I was more emotionally invested in beating WVU than I am most ACC teams. I don't hate WVU, but I want to. The more we play them, the more I can hate them.

My dream scenario would be a 10-to-12 team Appalachian Athletic Conference that includes some combination of Tennessee, App State, UVA, VT, Kentucky, Louisville, Cincy, WVU, Marshal, Pitt, and Penn State, but alas, this will never happen. I'm not opposed to extending an ACC invite to WVU, but I doubt the financial upside is strong enough to justify it.

So I say fuck it, let's put the mountainairs on the schedule every year.

I agree with playing WVU more often. Not necessarily every year, unless both teams get a lot better.

I'd LOVE to play Tennessee every few years. Maybe alternate them.

I'd love to do a rotation of WVU Tennessee and Maryland. Then 1 national P5 game/Notre Dame, 1 G5, 1 FCS or non Liberty Virginia school

I actually like this rotation idea. UMD could be dropped, but it would be nice to occasionally have a game in DC where we could flood into College Park.

I'm not a big fan of regularly playing Maryland.

Like mentioned below, PSU, Tennessee, and WVU would be an awesome mix.

From a selfish standpoint, I wholeheartedly support a MD series (I live in the DC burbs). I also think this helps with recruiting, as I think relevant regional games against the WV, Tenn, PSU, and yes MD's, makes for good TV, and TV is important to recruiting.

I do not think WVU belongs on this list. Actually one of my biggest reasons for not wanting to waste a game playing them. It does nothing for recruiting. Would I rather play WVU than ECU or App State, or another team that does not move the needle in recruiting? Of course. But as P-5 opponent, WVU has nothing to offer.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

where we could flood into College Park.

I'd rather watch the game from a sewer

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

So you do want to go to College Park?

Are you saying College Park = sewer?

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

Grew up in PG County. I can concur College Park = Sewer.

This is actually an excellent point

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

How about WVU/Tennessee/PSU instead:

  • Year 1: VT @ WVU, PSU @ Tennessee
  • Year 2: Tennessee @ VT, WVU @ PSU
  • Year 3: VT @ PSU, WVU @ Tennessee
  • Year 4: WVU @ VT, Tennessee @ PSU
  • Year 5: VT @ Tennessee, PSU @ WVU
  • Year 6: PSU @ VT, Tennessee @ WVU

Rinse and Repeat.

Hell, I'd settle for 3 year rotating neutral site match ups

PSU isn't enough of a rivalry to be included with WVU & Tenn

Its hard to argue that Tennessee is a rival as we've played them once in the regular season in the AP poll era.

They're a geographic rival. Lots of shit talking and hate between fanbases in that part of the country, despite not playing each other often.

How about WVU/Tennessee/PSU instead

Yes. Let's absolutely do that.

I'm all for this if we leave out the WVU. Playing them helps them a LOT more than it helps us.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Wasn't the Alliance agreement supposed to discourage OOC SEC games? If so, Maryland makes more sense than Tennessee.

Good point.

But I'd rather play a REAL Big 10 team than their doormat, and I don't really want to donate dollars to the soulless Maryland program, who traded tradition for no reason other than cash.

Great rivalry, we should play every year

This isn't unpopular, everyone wants this whether they know they do or not.

Totally agree! Can't wait to play them in Lane next season!

Beat WVU

I love the idea of that conference but sadly due to academics and the other athletics, it'll never happen. That said, if there was someway to split football off from the other sports and make our own thing I'd be onboard with that 100%. Something like that was what I was hoping would come out of this SEC conference shit storm.

I don't want to play them or Tennessee every year. But it should happen more regularly.

I want to beat both teams. At the same time I dread the thought of losing to them. But, I can't have the former without risking the latter.

I appreciate this idea.

#MakeTheMove . . . "Vick, dashing back . . . here he comes again . . . Electrifying . . . and have you ever seen anything like this?"

I wouldn't hate it, especially if reports of improved fan behavior are true.

But would you feel this way if we'd won?

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Yes, Yes! and YES!

Some day historians will link the downfall of college football to the moment WVU and VT stopped being yearly rivals.

This is a bit of hyperbole.

Well done.

Not unpopular at all.....I'd much rather play WVU every year (and sometimes lose) than play ODU/Liberty/ECU, etc. (And also sometimes lose)

My wife takes the kids and leaves the house while I watch my Hokie games.........nuff said

If made a list of P5 teams I'd to have a home and Away with, WVU would not be near the top.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Yep. I'd love to do that with PSU, USCe, Tennessee, aTm, among others....

My wife takes the kids and leaves the house while I watch my Hokie games.........nuff said

Hard pass, and here's why. 1- Playing WVU does nothing for our recruiting. 2- WVU considers beating VT a huge goal, they are highly motivated as a fanbase and team making them a more dangerous opponent. 3- Losing to them hurts our recruiting potentially. 4- Their fans are among the most abusive in all CFB. 5- Their conference is poised to become nearly irrelevant, further reducing the benefit of beating them.

Yes, I understand the history of the rivalry and all. Yes, they are a regional team which costs less in travel. But these are not good reasons to put them on the schedule. Good reasons to schedule an OOC team are threefold. 1- an easy victory against a team like MTSU that gets us a "W" and experience for the 2's and 3's. 2- a high-profile game that gets VT national exposure (think SEC) 3- a game that get us good recruiting exposure against an opponent that does not have a perpetual chip on the shoulder to beat VT (PSU or UCF for instance)

Look, dropping the ECU series was one of Whit's best decisions not because they were jerks to us (they were) but because ECU always treated the game against VT as the biggest, most important game on their schedule. We always got their best shot. That is foolish schedule management. WVU is exactly the same, they want to beat us real bad, but we don't have that same level of hatred. We reserve it for UVA, Miami and UNC because they are conference rivals that we fight directly with for recruits and Division titles. So until WVU becomes an ACC member (please no) VT should ignore them like the annoying little cousins that they are.

I'm not opposed to extending an ACC invite to WVU

To be the man you gotta beat the man!

Agreed and drop the boohoos. No one cared about uva when I was there is was all WV and da U

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
I served in the United States Navy"

I support this, playing WVU is part of what makes college football so great. 2 passionate fan bases, neighboring state schools with a hatred for one another, let's play every year!

1-0 every week

If they join the ACC, we will probably play them every year.

Otherwise, a home and home once every 5 years. Let the hate stew, but keep the distance.

For those of us that were fans/students in the late 90s/early 2000s, it's hard to forget how awful the Morgantown experience was, which is why there is still so much vitriol for the Mountaineers.

However, my experience at FedEx in 2017 was good, and from what I've heard the fans were good to us Saturday. A rivalry isn't a rivalry if you win ever game, so as much as it sucked to lose Saturday, bring it back. I like games that matter to both fan bases.

I would love to play WVU every year. For me it is a family rivalry, so theres a lot of chatter that comes with the outcome. We would've gone to Morgantown if my bachelor party wasn't this past weekend, but you can bet I already have that weekend circled next year.

Alright, but I ain't going to Morgantown without bail money.

If you play it, they will win.

Look, the wva game was exciting, that is what college football is about. It has been a great rivalry, and it can continue. The mountaineer had that stadium rocking, and it helped the team. Wva is undefeated at home since last year. We should be so lucky to play in meaningful games like Saturday. It is called being relevant in the game. Playing fcs teams is not what we need to be. I dont want to go more in that direction, I want to see big games, even if we lose

I would welcome a renewed rivalry with wvu. I think it would be good for VT

We could use West by God to replace liberty biberty....

Totally agree. Would much rather play WVU than Liberty on an annual basis. I however stand firmly against ever (and I mean ever) extending an ACC invite to WVU.
