Let's go?
nah, it's game day.
LET'S GO!!!
Right on!!!!
LET'S FRIGGIN GO!!!!
...looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue
HOKIES!
I completely forgot until earlier this week that I had agreed months ago to be signed up for a charity fundraiser golf tournament today. I also thought it would be in the morning, but it actually starts at 2, so I won't be able to hang with you guys in the game thread today once the game starts. Hopefully for all of our sakes, there won't be anything bad enough happening today to need the extra moderation lol.
I'm hoping for less moderation, at least in an offensive play-calling sense.
Ready to get the stink of last week off... LETS GOOO!!!
HOKIES!
Relevant! Hope its a non-issue and the next guys up get good reps
That sucks because this felt like a game where we would get to see more of Hunter and Stretch.
Hopefully they are out of those protocols next week.
Dzansi being out makes for an interesting OL start
LT Lecitus Smith
LG Brock Hoffman
C Johnny Jordan
RG Kaden Moore
RT Luke Tenuta
V-IR-GINIA TECH!
Anyone else really nervous?
Edit: I REALLY wanted to be wrong. 😢
No
No.
Anyone having issues listening on the radio? They are playing Tech talk live.
Nevermind. They just switched to the game.
Man these accn broadcasts are just flat out horrible
Just do the radio. The picture quality is much better.
Lotta empty seats today. I guess a nooner vs Richmond.
ACCN off to another hot start
ACCN correspondent probably said something, but the audio was up to normal ACC Network standards, so we didn't hear it.
Watch ESPN says the game has not started yet.
Try refreshing whatever app you're using!
Did that 4 times. The 4th time worked.
I hope it says that in the 4th quarter...cause it's "still not a game"
Good start play calling, various depth pass routes
Really bad miss by bb3 there
That's 3 should be TDs in the past 5 quarters.
BIG PLAY TRE!
What an effort by TRE!!!!!
TD, Hokies!
Looked a little better. Catchable ball. Great catch by Turner, and got his foot in.
Really interesting OL mix this first drive. Lecitus at LT, Hoffman at LG, Jordan C, Moore RG, Tenuta RT
Great to see BB letting it rip.
Holy smokes Tre!!
that's why he has NFL potential. Consistency and strength are the big things with him... and our offense needs to not be afraid to let it rip because TT can make plays.
Would be better to see him putting easy throws on the money.
We must score EVERY possession, until the bench is clear....PERIOD
Watching those pregame highlights against UNCheat, it is really evident something is off with BB3. He just looks slower and "off" since those early drives.
Now to see how jacked up the D is!
Barno crashed hard inside for no good reason.
Dayly brought him down. That's good. but it wasn't a tackle. I don't like that.
DITTO!
Dax is pumped up
THAT was a beautifully drawn up blitz call
Dax sacks Bo
Bo knows Dax!
...and Dax knows English
Nice wrap up by Hollifield.
UR's coach looks like Tom Osborne pacing the sidelines and wearing all red
I really liked the Dline discipline on that 4th down and long.
*3rd
Watching Jerry and Brett play against my drinking buddies is just a little sad
Who knew we were saving our revamped offense for Richmond?!
Corn knees a genius!
TT has gret hands
Throws across the middle and RPOS wtf is going on
"Operation: get Tre the damn ball" is going well thus far.
Burmeister and Turner hooking up pretty well.
BB3 needs to calm down with some of these throws.
BB keeps it for a first down
I don't mind Hoffman nastiness while pulling. I like it a lot better than stationary at center
This is what last week's game plan looks like when they actually do it.
If BB3 had any form of accuracy this team could be so good
Boy, the OL disappeared on that one
up? Didn't move to make a block.
BB3 is missing wide open receiver, what's up?
I retract my Hoffman pulling comment
TE was wideeeee open on that
Looks like he knew he was wide open and started coasting when he came out of the break on the wheel route. Can't stop running there.
Braxton misses wide open DD, promptly gets planted 5ft in the crust.
Hoffman missed his block there. Got BB crushed.
Nice move, Blackshear.
G5 offense works angainst G5 defense.
Throwing and catching works against anyone.
Drake stopped on his wheel rt there and made it look like Burmeister missed him
Anyone else hear two crowd audio feeds a split second out of phase with each other?
Yes. The broadcast has been poor technically
Also how is that not targeting?
Watching BB miss so many open receivers makes watching so tough.
Is the D-line fading already?
Good lord BB looks terrible so far
To me he looks inconsistent
The Richmond QB tackles his own guy for a loss!
Nice stand by the D there
Are we not setting up punt returns?
If the coverage gets there the same time as the ball, a fair catch is the way to go.
They definitely need to work on stretching the field this week
They took a shot...holy crap
sounds like they have an open mic down on the field near our cheerleaders...wtf
Clear PI there.
Could we just not with the jet sweeps??? It's pretty clear they aren't stopping the north/south running.
The offense must have felt some heat after last weekend. Making a concerted effort to push the ball down the field.
Also when did the students start chanting you can't do that after a penalty in football? I know it's a basketball thing. I guess the current students only know VT as a basketball school. Sigh.
I always find it weird that FCS offensives have such great/creative play calling against our D. That toss pitch/screen tuning would work really well with KK or RB5 with our quicker OL pulling.
Right on queue...out O play calling goes into a shell.
Precisely on queue. 3 and out on our third drive (ie the first one that wasn't scripted).
Guessing these longer throws will just disappear in any game against a P5 opponent.
Didn't even have to wait that long as we are QB draws on 2 and long already.
these screen passes, I swear
I'm ready to see one of the backup QB's go in, Burmeister is hurt and it is obvious. Offense seems like they are sleeping a little bit on Richmond.
wow....wtf...run BB up the middle so he can either get hit or not be able to use his legs...smart
Punt again, crap
Throw deep, run straight. That's all we need to do.
Need a turnover to get the juice back
Love it when we always give our FCS opponents some confidence!
And so far, not happy with the yards after contact we're giving up.
Agreed. Not bottling them up the way I'd like.
Very strange play calling, but what are we to expect....ugh
So apparently xfinity no longer has ACCN? So I'm in the dark....
You're not missing much
Is korknee starting to get cute?
Struggling offensively against this level of competition should be a fireable offense
I told my friend who coached with Fu before at Illinois St that Fu needs to hang 100 on Richmond. He agreed.
I'd settle for 50. Which should be the expectation
We're just keeping it vanilla so we don't give away any of our good plays to Bye Week!
I heard bye weeks get after ya
nothing new to see here...
Yes...but will the stack master cook set work with the Spurtle I bought last year?
Lmao
You gotta go all in on these ACCN products. Cook with your spurtle and stack master under the glorious light of your tac light. Also don't forget the Irish Potato Peeler!
Meanwhile, Pitt is already up 20 with 5 minutes left in the 1st...
We haven't scored more because we didn't have a defensive game plan for the backup.. probably
This is a 6 win team. BB ain't it, and I don't think this offense will ever look as good as it did in 2016 with Evans and Loffler's recruits. The play calling has gotten most of the blame, but you can see why the staff has been using a limited playbook with BB. The fireable offense is not the play calling or scheme, but the fact that this staff doesn't have a decent QB in year 6.
This is a 9+ win team with a competent OC.
It is obvious BB is not 100%. This game is a great opportunity to get Knox some real game reps. Hell any QB should know our play book by now and can run this offense. How hard is it to learn 8 plays?
Agreed. This looks almost 100% bad execution.
BB has left a ton of yards in the dirt out there, either with missed receivers or bad reads on the RO.
First QTR Stats
Richmond ............... VT
24 PASS YDS 84
33 RUSH YDS 23
57 TOTAL YDS 107
65 of those years were on our first drive...and add 1-15 yard PI. Not exactly a well-oiled machine
We kill our own up tempo
ENOUGH WITH THE LATERAL SHIT!!!!
Scared money don't make money
Immediately throw a four yard pass, three yards into the dirt
I feel like I am walking on corn kernels watching this game!
...and punt
Great time to bring out the fake punt /s
Sheer desperation. That was a bad call.
Wtf...
I miss Chase Mummau
Something just isn't right with BB. If this game is tight at half I think we need to try another QB. Just completely off after a hot first drive.
Just don't let it be the punter.
"...just lets go of an absolute duck!"
Hahah!
We are the least fun team to watch. It makes me so sick.
It's so bad. The wins we get are against G5/FCS or because our opponent self implodes more than we do. We have 6 or 7 throw away possessions with a 3rd & 15+ every game regardless of who we're playing. Rarely do I finish watching a game and feel optimistic about the next week.
What in the fuck are we doing......
Holy shit that just perfectly sums up everything
Fake punting on Richmond.
This is embarrassing desperation at this point.
We have a mid-level FCS offense, Villanova's is better than ours.....and a top 20 FBS defense.
The fake punt was a great idea, but poor execution.
So glad I'm taking one of my friends to a birthday meal at 2. This is just atrocious now, both execution and play calling.
We're keeping Richmond in the game...stupid call on that fake punt
that is beyond obnoxious to run a fake punt on an FCS...pathetic
The fact we're breaking out a fucking fake punt against Richmond makes me wanna cry.
Beamer ball?
We just ran a trick play in Richmond. If anyone is wondering why we need new coaches ......
And it didn't work to boot
I wouldn't overthink it.
Was low risk. Probably should have worked.
...cause the coaches aren't...
Nice blitz by the defense for a sack
I really am not the type to rally for a new QB to be put in, but something has to change. This is pitiful we are struggling this much against RICHMOND. Having to resort to a fake punt?
May have been poorly executed; however, why are we calling plays that we are unable to execute?
Exactly...or call actual plays that our guys can execute. Our playbook requires perfect execution by 5-star athletes at all times.
Not really.
Just requires SOME execution.
Throwing the ball and catching the ball, most of it.
"Our Defense isn't going to have to win ballgames for us anymore" - Justin Fuente
Nope, it will be our Special Teams
Called it.
Thankful that I have Comcast so can't get ACC Network to see our sad offense. Radio is the way to go.
I'm ready to see why Knox Kadum can do. Something is up with BB bc he is throwing garbage today.
Lol
This comment didn't age well.
G5 play-call against a FCS team.
That's not fair G5 playcalling is very innovative :) ...if we had G5 playcalling, we would put up a lot of points.
Burmeister's throwing shoulder seems like its hurt.
Good stand by the defense
Where's Mark Leal?
I was thinking Motley myself...at least the run game might get going
Let's see what one of the TE's can do!
Where is Tahj Bullock?
Just tuning in now
Looks like I missed quite an underwhelming 1st quarter. Woof.
First drive made it look like we would be up at least four scores by now. BB3 has thrown horribly the rest of the time and here we are.
Guys if you try to not care about appearances or if the team wins, it's easier to watch.
That is similar to our coaching strategy as well, apparently.
Ready to see moore at qb
Reaching 50 points is looking like only a dream
Want to depress yourself? Go look up the last time we scored 50.
Just VT or combined?
Why are we fair catching on the 4 yard line?
It was funny seeing Fuente get frustrated with the false start when the team went hurry up. Uh, yeah, they haven't done that in two years. What did you expect to happen?
That was the offense we were supposed to get when he got here too. And we've almost always moved the ball/scored more playing fast
Meanwhile, UGA is beating Vanderbilt 35-0 at the end of the 1st and we are struggling with the Spiders. I know there's no comparison in talent, but it still makes me want to cry.
Well we are getting what we wished for... let's see what Knox has.
Umm...ooops
Welp, that ended quickly.
There hasn't been a halfway decent QB on this team since Josh Jackson broke his leg.
So now we switch QBs when we couldn't put in Blumrick last week at the goal line?
Tune in for Knox Kadum.
Fuente is trying to get fired
Fuente trying to speed run getting fired this afternoon
Welp, Kadum sucks
Lmao
uh oh
Welp, Knox ain't it.
I hate it here
Are we trying to give them points?
Trying?
No, we're executing.
1-play later...we're tied.
I've never laughed like this at tech football before. What a joke
Wait, wait!
Put Burmeister back in!
Still lmao
Wow. We actually suck
Bye bye Fuente.
Ridiculous
Well, this may accelerate Fu getting canned at least. This is horrendous.
Knox improvised and made a mistake. How is that the coaches fault?
It's like Fuente is trying to get fired. Fake punt and then the defense bails you out, and you bring in the backup QB against a team where it's unclear if you will actually win. And then he immediately throws a pick and within one play, we're tied.
This is 100% on Fuente.
Either way, Fu wins. He gets things going and wins, great. He fails miserably and gets fired, he gets paid big bucks to not work. All the leverage here. Whit painted VT in a corner with the extension and buyout.
Yeah it certainly appears he's arrogantly fucking with Whit to see how far he can go before he gets paid for doing nothing
Guessing that's the last time we see Knox for the season. Fu sends a message for mistakes! ...unless your the OC, then you get job security.
I hate that there's a part of me hoping we lose so that the fan base just burns this shit to the ground
There's nothing left to but. If we lose this game!
is this a joke...one coaching blunder after another...kadum should never be put in that position...coaching.recuriting.roster mgmt., etc. FIRE FU
*UNBELIEVABLY* stupid to put him in at the 5 yard line.
So are we all finally agreed....? Fuente goes.
Yes but I cannot wait to hear the TSL podcast spin this one into a positive.
When I saw we were 35 point favorites I knew we were in trouble, Now we're proving it
I'm not someone who is big on calling for people to be fired but if we lose this game someone needs to be fired afterwards.
Even if we win and it's close, where does that put us. Our goal, at the very least, should be coastal champ every year. Barely beating teams like Richmond should tell anybody watching we're pretty far away from that goal. Makes me wonder what the circumstances are that would push Whit over the edge. If it's close, at this point, I'd almost rather lose to force the issue. But we apparently can't start games well, even in the best year under Fuente, look how we started in the bowl game against Arkansas before turning it around. That was exciting, but if I knew that would be the beginning of a long trend of starting games like shit, I wouldn't have been as happy.
Our defense, "Here offense, hold my beer!"
This is fucking embarrassing. What a garbage team.
FIRE CORNELSEN BEFORE HALFTIME
What the fucking hell
At this point it's just easier to laugh at this train wreck
I'm not trying to be a fair weather fan, but if we lose to Richmond, I'm not going to the Pittsburgh or Syracuse games that I have tickets for. I support these boys, but I will not support a program that allows this shit to be a thing in YEAR 6. But fans are bad for wanting to see us be better, right?
qB wHisPEreR
Knox even rolled out of a perfectly clean pocket for that play
Knox shouldn't even be in the game there
Nothing makes sense
I saw him and thought is Brax hurt? Then they're like Justin Fuente told us this would happen and I'm like no no no
it was like bro, you have no pressure at the moment, why are you rolling out?
It is like 2018 all over again
Fu get the fuck outta Blacksburg pls you suck so bad
Maybe we are saving our best play for notre dame! /s
What an absolute blunder. How do you make those two decisions back to back
If you thought an opening drive where they move the ball at will was going to stop VT from making this a nail biter, then you haven't been paying attention.
But that was still a new one
I don't know how you can look at this first half and not immediately understand that coaching is the problem here.
Welp... Fuente still hasn't developed a QB...
Might as well see how Blumrick does at this point
Corny - "Activate Turtle Mode...now!"
Be careful with the "I hope we lose so Fuente is fired" thinking.
What if we lose and we keep him? That's a scary thought.
No way we would keep him after losing a game we should obviously win ...... oh wait
The good news is that we're running out of streaks to break AND teams in VA to lose to. Clearly the only way to go will be up!
This is just fuente daring Whit to fire him because he knows he does not have the balls too
I'll happily take Corny's job for half his salary, and i won't do shit anywhere near this stupid.
Actually it's team effort today...players and coaches stinking up the joint
We're so bad
How come I'm always seeing Hoffman walking back to our running back being tackled for loss?
Well, at some point someone has to actually make a play. I know that was a hard catch, but someone needs to do something.
Fake it! Hahaha
If Burmeister puts more arm in that long pass, Smith catches it in stride for YAC
Smith, how do you not hold on to that?
Boos in the 2nd qtr
lol, you know Fuente hears it and is just like "they don't know what they are talking about. This product on the field is fine, there's a completely rational reason for this situation."
How are we not able to run on Richmond???
Nobody runs on Richmond duh
Holston needs more touches. He is the best all around RB
You have to punt that.
You aren't going for in on 4th and three from the 40 in a tied game.
That woulda been a sick catch
"If I'm Justin Fuente, I go for it here". ...Punt team immediately comes out.
So we zag when we should zig...
There's a reason the commentator isn't a coach.
If Fuente is a coach, then why can't the commentator be one too?
Let's just say it's probably harder than it looks.
To be fair Fuente makes coaching look pretty damn hard.
I wasn't more commenting on how Fu has "grown" as a coach and doesn't always do the expected thing. Not when we're playcalling, mind you...but on dumb shit...and fake punts
The fake punt doesn't bother me in the least.
Low risk, high reward.
Woke up late but holy shit maybe I should do something else with my day
Welp...we can now add Richmond to the list of non-P5 VA Programs that Fuente can't handle...
What's left at this point...Christopher Newport???
Maybe a nice home and home with GMU??...gives Corny a fair shot of success at least.
The last time we played Richmond in Lane we lost, 35 years ago, under Beamer.
Yes...because that has incredible relevance to what is occurring today.
There is no reasonable person who can conclude that this VT team should be struggling to move the ball against Richmond.
I do applaud you on your mental gymnastics...they are Simone Biles-level.
Glad ACCn is bringing back JMU images
Saved by the opponent's penalties
Awesome return!
Whoa, finally a PR TD!
At least we can be happy for tay tay during this joke
Players bailing out the coaches again
Defense is playing well.
We score on a punt return.
Corny greats credit for Offensive TD...
That's actually special teams, but I'll take it.
It is almost like the VT of old.....almost.
Okay...new offensive play. Drop back...turn around...throw to TR9 20 yards behind the line of scrimmage and scream punt...have him return it for TD.
Corny take notes
My own joking aside...WTF? Why don't we get our playmakers the ball in space and let them do their shit?
BB3 can't get the ball to the playmakers
Hand it to them.
Robinson torched them on the return!
Nice job.
Well something went well today. Return game has been solid on PR and KR all year.
Oh that was good!
Richmond coach getting after his punter, wish our coach would do that. But then again, their coach knows we are beatable.
LOL, Richmond coach is like "wtf, we can actually win this game. You can't be giving points away like that. Come on, man!"
Who needs offense when you have Beamerball baby!
I wish I was more excited about that 😞
Shout out to TRob and Coach Shibest for working out the return bugs this year
I'm not sure why the Richmond coach laid into the punter like that. Not much more you can do as a kicker. Not his fault they whiffed on a few tackles
He out-kicked the coverage
The stupid fake punt and BB missing throws have kept Richmond in the game....what's worse is that we have no choice but to play the hurt QB because his back up is not good
Retracted.
Yeah you can tell Brax is hurt
Is it just me or did the PA say "First Down, Hokies!" when he scored???
OK... new strategy. Do everything possible to keep the ball away from Corny's group. Maybe we can win that way.
So Richmond has sold out to stop the run, forcing "the best passing game we've had since Fu has been here" to throw it...and we can't beat an FCS defense.
ThisIsFine.gif
In fairness, the passes are there...we just can't complete them!
Which goes back to the "best passing game" comment. This is Fu's best, and we can't complete them against an FCS defense
Tay Tay is my may bay hey
If our cupcake games look like this, I'm scared to see conference games will look like.
Connor, get a grip.
Great tackle Waller
You absolutely have to score here fuente
Waller is just a baller.
Time to pack it in for halftime boys
The only thing that may save this game for us is Richmond's QB 1's finger.
Crappy play calling! Why are we going for only the long ball
C'mon Brax.
Let's see a solid drive here.
How is Burmeister our best QB? God dog he cant hit the broad side of a barn
I am beginning to suspect BB has no depth perception.
Good call, Brax.
Call a TO!!!!
We only have 3...if we don't use them we get to trade them in for a mountain bike at halftime.
Are we trying to run the clock down just to try and kick a field goal? Wouldn't a touchdown be better??!
Yes.
No...we are saving time for the punt. Totally makes sense. Take 1 TO with 50 seconds left, run a pass. Punt and give them the ball with 0:40 left.
4th game of the year...against Richmond...and we finally play fast, hurry up at the end of a half and try to score...
Why not call a time out there?
3 timeouts still. Yeah, let the clock run Fuente. You make Mike London look like a genius.
Someone better be getting into asses at halftime. When was the last time that we just took an fcs team to the woodshed like we should. How are not just out muscling them and loving the ball at our will??
Who are they going to yell at? The players are busting their asses...as usual.
BB3. How is the OL not creating massive holes to run through?? How are receivers not getting separation against FCS comp? D is playing great.
I think you can watch him tuck and run...lunge for the 1st down marker and see he's playing with all his heart. He's making some bad passes (but not bad decisions)...and he's obviously hurt. Idiot HC should not have him in the game if he's not the best option. If he is, call friggin plays that work with his strengths (runs, short passes, misdirection, screens, etc.)...not one receiver go long and throw it as hard as you can (with a hurt shoulder).
I'm so frustrated. If losing every game for the rest of the season would make Whit clean house, let's go ahead and lose every fucking game.
Smith has bricks for hands
He's usually one of most sure handed receivers
That wasn't great
BB hasn't exactly been making it easy on him
He sure hasn't
Cornelson needs to go, bring in a real OC.
Is a midgame firing out of the question?
These play calls are just sick.
There was nothing wrong with throwing long.
Low pctg passes mixed with passes behind the line.
Agree to disagree.
Feel free.
But with 50 seconds left, you'll have to throw it. This offense isn't well-oiled enough for a 10-play-in-50-seconds drive with no mistakes.
I think if Smith hadn't been held, he catches that ball.
They're tugging receivers all over the place.
He'd have been all over the refs.
This wasn't pushing off, this is holding back receivers.
I like Smith but he can't win one on one battles
That was pass interference. The defender had a handful of shirt.
You'll see it if you review it.
No points... shoot ourselves in the foot, again.
How can we not get separation Against Richmond??
Because they're holding.
Another good special team play
Any chance Corn pulls a Vontae Davis and retires at half?
Nope, in his mind he thinks hes crushing it with these play calls!
As much as I want to laugh at this, you're dead on
"It's not my play calling that's bad, the players aren't executing!"
Incoming 99-yard touchdown run
Think Braxton had missed about 4-5 wide open receivers today when he's had plenty of time in the pocket. He clearly cannot see the field well
I fully get that there may be no one any better than Fuenteco out there to hire, but FFS can we at least quit sticking with failure!?
Need defense and special teams to score. Our best offense is keeping the ball away from the offense.
Looks like still alot of minutia out there.
Brad may need a bigger iron
😵snoozer😴😴😴
Richmond has 101 total yards in the 1H. On paper that looks good...until you notice we have 175 total yards. Our offensive coaches are just inept...it's like they don't watch prior games (to see what we cannot do) or even watch practices.
I have heard/seen rumblings that the offense doesn't really gameplan for specific opponents and review their film/tendencies as much as they just try to work on what they want to do on offense and practice the things they didn't do well the week before.
UNC is clearly an example where they game-planned for a specific opponent.
So I don't think that's true.
Well to be fair, they did have all offseason. Also there wasn't really much of a gameplan other than run clock and keep UNC's o off the field.
To be fair, it worked.
They get all offseason for week 1 game. I think this is why we always play well in game 1 of each season.
Okay...then can we say he game planned for one game. Then crap shoot for the rest of the year. Seems to explain years past.
I wish I could argue with you, but I've got nothing.
We ran the same general plays and strategy against UNC that we have since 2016.
Game planning involves finding another team's weaknesses and trying to exploit them. Like how other teams seem to try and isolate Connor in coverage when playing us. You find a matchup that favors you and design plays specifically to exploit it.
We do not do that offensively...find me one gamefilm that demonstrates that.
Gamplanning is not: Sam Howell have ball = bad.
2016? I thought this was year-1?
With this staff, for the most part, if we had a one game season, and all off season to gameplan (no covid), we would be national champions. They can gameplan the hell out of the first game of the season for the most part (not every 1st game, but the likes of FSU, UNC), but any one week gameplans, you mines well as chalk it up as a loss, because its piss poor after that
Time for the birthday lunch. Not going to lie: Not going to miss missing the 2nd half.
Good luck to the rest of you that stick it out.
Really?! Happy Birthday. Today is my 50th!
Happy birthday and welcome to the club!
Thanks! My 11-year old woke me up this morning saying "Happy 1/2 way to triple digits"
And for my birthday my wife gave me uninterrupted time to watch the Hokies...you know, she's giving me a stroke :)
Too much, my man
It only takes one ;)
Happy birthday and I think your wife is trying to kill you.
"Honey, this birthday cake tastes a little arsenicy"
Is Mark Richt sick, he has no energy?
I think he announced he was diagnosed with parkinson's last off-season.
Ah, gee. That's horrible, I really respect him. My prayers go out to him.
Parkinson's disease
Yes...very. And it's depressing. Sad to watch him these days.
His mind seems sharp, just a little difficulty expressing it. I have patience for such a quality man.
Agree. He was such a passionate coach, it's heartbreaking to see him struggle.
I love how everyone is confused about how to talk about us because nobody knows what we are doing on offense.
It would be a good game plan, if it was working!
Technically no game plan is a game plan.
Lol! We do well on busterd plays
corn custard plays?
If this were actually year 2, I think we would be playing Bullock and taking our lumps to get the QB of the future some experience. But it's actually year 6 and Fu is coaching for his job; he's playing the qb he thinks gives him the best chance to win. I think he might be wrong about that; BB3 can't throw. I don't know if he is injured or just not good; but he can't hit an open receiver.
... lol, ugh man. Guess I'm glad I worked out through the first half.
Hopefully the second half is a good watch
I've got a Cub Scout hike and a little league to go to. I'm both cases there is a competent game plan in place and not just the first 15 minutes that has been scripted.
Terrible way to come out after last game .
Glad to see other ACC teams handling their FCS competition with ease.
...except us
Yes...hence the "other"
Jesus...Fu is such a friggin whiner. D.
Fuente interview on radio: "Can't make this stuff up." Went on to criticize the execution. I have such confidence in the staff and team going forward.
If your team can never execute you either have to recruit better players who can or change your scheme... We've been hearing this same bullshit year after year.
Tired of hearing the BS blame game on the players . He's been here long enough to have his own players on the field . There has been zero adjusting the last several years . Same stale ass play calling .
Think we can score 20 offensive points on UVa? Classic battle of resistible force meets movable object.
He stepped out of bounds right in front of the ref.
He must have been too close to see it.
Why doesn't Corny watch us on defense and see what the other team calls...then do the exact same thing. That swing pass was a great play call...get OLs in space and get the ball to a play maker in space. Meantime the D over pursues the fake and they gain 10+ yards.
It's almost like look into a mirror.
Followed by an excellent delayed draw.
I miss the TacShave commercials
Is Dax over playing his gaps?
If he is, it is his enthusiasm which I would rather see than lackadaisical play
Hey, D, tackle number 3.
What happens if we actually lose this game? Guessing still nothing, but good lord.
Radio announcer saying he can see the total lack of energy on defense from up there.
...the fans get really pissed off. ...the staff makes excuses and blames the players. ...the administration holds a press conference and tells everyone they don't have enough say to make changes.
...you know, the usual.
Pollard is not happy
Richmond playing like they think they have a chance to win. We're playing like we don't think they are a threat.
They do
He did better holding on to that ball than our receivers do.
I see the Defense showing up a little bit.
Can we let JHam call offensive plays for a while? His players are focused and pissed off. They don't make every play, but man they are playing hard down the stretch in these games.
Hard hit by Dax but perfect technique
Dax with the tackle I would've given my left nut to have seen about 20 different times last week. An actual wrap up. Way to go, big man.
He's had a few of those today.
He's probably going to get a penalty soon...and I'm okay with it. Really playing to the echo of the whistle.
That floater on the scramble had pick-6 written all over it.
They're going to lose their chance at a mountain bike.
I wish our coach cared as much as theirs.
Maybe just a "little" less...
We need a "Hatin On" thread about Justin Fuente.
Google www.the key play.com
Three a week isn't enough?
RB5 getting the ball off tackle on the pitch...picks up an easy 5. Hmm?
JH0 off tackle gets 8.
Tre is MONEY
Does TT11 ever miss a pass he gets his hand on?
BB to TT for a big play
What a catch!!!
Oh, good...we're in the red zone.
Maybe we should take a few penalties and move back?
I told y'all lol
If CB4 pitches or passes that it's going to go for big yards.
Sigh, glad we got this TD but ......... why didn't they put in Blumrick last week
Corn logic
We seriously need to see if he can throw the ball, at all....at least to see if he can get the ball in the vicinity of our receivers
Corny is a genius...what great play calling!!!!
Genius?!?! Really? Did you just start watching the game? 😁
Oh no this man can't read sarcasm. WE NEED 911 HE CANT READ SARCASM😭😭
If not stated overwise, always assume sarcasm.
STUCK IT IN!!!
You know the problem with putting Blumrick in though? The whole world KNOWS he's keeping the ball, and the defense can send eight people after him.
I'm glad we scored, though, don't get me wrong.
It's pick your poison...
BB - ignore QB keep
CB - QB run is only thing you need to worry about.
Unpredictability is very overrated
100 percent this......it's elementary bullshit
You been Blumricked Richmond 😎
Love the energy Blumrick brings. Anyone else catch the piss poor body language from Blackshear walking off the field as we scored?
What isn't #4 Dax? Is he playing QB now?
You can have duplicate numbers as long as they aren't on the field at the same time (except if you're Memphis from last week and the refs don't notice)
Sorry, forgot the /s
Appears that Corn read TKP this week. Put in the running QB inside the 10.
That drive had a good mix of run and catch, including some down field throws. I want more.
Who'd a thunk it?
Rumblin Blumbrickin (in Chris Berman's voice)
Sorry, but that Blumrick package is not going to work against Power 5 opponents. We have to do something other than run Blumrick when he is in.
Anyone else feel like Blumrick gave off Dani Rojas vibes after that TD?
No spoilers but Dani had me laughing out loud in the most recent episode
Okay...now time to give credit...the playcalling was actually solid. We ran a lot the "directional" runs for success (vs. snap the ball, hand off and look for the hole). There was some window dressing fakes and motion. Passes were mostly play action (vs. straight drop back and hope). Why TF don't we do more stuff like that?
It's almost like...if you don't have an elite QB...maybe help him out by running the ball and not putting EVERYTHING on him. And also putting the big guy in for QB draws inside the 5. If my unqualified ass can draw this up since week 1, what is Corny's excuse...
Ignorance?
The Blumrick redzone package is fools gold. He only scored bc it was an FCS opponent. We are so damn predictable we get stuffed 3 times with that against any P5 opponent
I mean it was a 100% more effective than our red zone package last week. It "may" have worked.
To be fair, the pass to Tre was where he could reach it; but not where it should have been.
It looks like Richmond's second half idea is to try to wear us down by runs.
Have we gone into prevent D?
Wait they have a guy named Jerry Garcia?
lol that shouldve been PI
Do it until they call it.
Not sure how many times I have heard them talk about "undisciplined" play or positioning or rushes by the defense. All of the well-deserved criticism of the offensive coaching, but a lot of people on defense not in the right place.
Officials helped us out big time with no calls to stall that drive. Not one but two Pass Interference no calls
Ice Him!!! Do it Fuente
Nvm...iced themselves
What's the worst that could happen?
for a sec I thought Fu called a timeout and I was ready to rage lol
Hoffman doesn't seem to be a good run blocker
Does anyone know what the spread was?
I saw 35
Damn
Espn had it at 29 at kick off
Mayo?
The complete inability to run the ball against this team is the most concerning takeaway from this entire game for me
Yup. I am baffled as to how we cannot get any push and serious run game against an FCS team. I mean what the hell.
I like how we finally start to show some life in the run game. Get a 3 and 3 (by running). Then run a straight drop back pass (not even play action). incomplete...punt
I don't know if I've ever been so checked out during football games.
Like the only thing unexpected in this game is that we made a laughable decision to try qb2 at our own 6 yard line. Otherwise, we're letting a subpar team with a back up qb hang around. Our passing game isn't good. For some reason we refuse to do what is working. Once we're out of scripted plays we just flat line.
Da'wain Lofton, Jaden Payoute and Jaylen Jones are names we will hear a lot this year along with possibly Chance Black, Malachi Thomas, and Kenji Christian...
On top of our ineptness seeing how Pitt and Miami are handling FCS is so frustrating as that is what our game should be.
My wife asked if I would be happy if we scored two more tds and I said no because we should be up like Miami or Pitt is
She just wants to see you happy bro
Why are we up 11 on UR when Miami is up 49 and Pitt is up 63?
Because their coaches are "competent".
Blame it on the minutia
No no. Nobody is better than Corn at minutia.
I don't understand these comments. They're all completely different teams. Tech has not played well in this game obviously but to assume either of those teams would be winning by 40+ is wishful thinking
You aren't wrong... but I'm done churching up dog fights with 1AA's... I don't care which one it is. Unacceptable for a P5 football school.
J. Hamm's defense has played very well for us this game.
Justin Fuente's middle name is "Malaise"
We should institute the QB spy package.
At least they have forced themselves to use all their timeouts if it becomes close.
The ghost of Mike London is still roaming the sidelines.
Crap...Richmond is out of timeouts. They blew their chance at some really great raffle prizes.
Maybe Fuente will be nice enough to gift them a few down the stretch.
Huesman is wasting valuable timeouts.
This has been a massive disappointment.
Whit needs to either get rid of Fuente, or tell Fuente that he is going to fire Brad on his behalf, and to go get someone better.
Nice tackle
I like how we're beating FCS #24 by 11 and look absolutely lifeless on offense
And Pitt is beating the SNOT out of FCS #21
This staff is a joke. The players deserve so much better.
Because ratings are science.
Okay let's get rid of the ratings. Just focus on FCS. We should beat the snot out of any FCS team
That, I'm more comfortable with.
I never claimed or implied they were science lol, not sure what you're trying to prove here.
EDIT: Because regardless of "science" or not, it's a measuring stick that we aren't measuring up to...take your attitude somewhere else.
Sorry. just seemed weird to me to use scoring differentials between ACC competitions with the #21 and #24 teams in the FCS as some kind of measuring stick.
Sorry if that sounded like attitude. More like annoyance at this game in general.
Frustrating for sure, no worries. Have a leg!
You, too.
I thought they were going to flag Fuga there for flopping into the Richmond player. Guess it was the other way around
It should have been "no flag"
That dude made a really dirty play. He ran up on Fuga, then swung his left leg under Fuga's and pushed him down at the same time (trying to make it look innocent).
Decent pressure but no outside containment
Three Hokie defenders hit the receiver and none made the tackle...
Seems all of our dbs wanna play hero ball and forget the have arms they can use.
Glad I'm not the only one getting frustrated with that
Refs really helping us out today honestly.
The missed PIs a couple drives ago saved points imo
Almost another outstanding special team play.
We might be the only team that can have a holding call result in a loss
Isn't Australia metric? Hate to tell you, Jeff...but if that's what you are yelling at the punter for, he's not going to get it /s
That throw was...all kinds of bad.
Loved that playcall, though. Fake sweep, fake QB reverse, step back pass. If we had held the fake a little longer and allowed it develop (give the DB chance to look in the backfield), may have been huge.
Of course, that followed the usual vanilla crap.
BB3 follows up a great throw to Tayvion with a horrible throw to Tre that should have been intercepted.
Horrible pass.
One day we'll find our quarterback
Maybe in year 2...
😂
I'm really looking forward to the Ferrell kid from Georgia. He reminds me a lot of TT5.
Running for his life and making the staff look competent?
I guess the reality that I am facing here and I guess I didn't want to think it but there isn't much out there separating these two teams. I mean we can hate on Fuente all we want but I am not seeing much of a physical difference either in terms of the skill and overall athleticism of the players.
Still falls on the staff: recruiting and development
After 6 years, if it's anyone's fault that there is no physical difference on the field today, it's ALL on Fuente.
We have a coach that CANT recruit well enough to make us competitive. CANT develop talent to make us competitive. Recruiting is his job and his responsibility.
It all on him.
This offensive line is a problem. I'm also not convinced Hoffman should be back at center when Silas comes back....
Welp, we are done scoring for the day.
Will leave it up to the D to hold off the Mighty Spiders.
14 points...another banner day for the lethal CornFu Attack!!!!
Wait we scored on D or Teams? I've been on the road today.... This O is pathetic...
Punt return for touchdown. Only 14 scored on offense.
Robinson punt return.
"It's a call by Justin Wood, the Virginia D coordinator". What game are these guys watching?
Punter is doing a great job
Can someone explain how we aren't just physically manhandling them on the OL??
Because our coaches don't believe they are doing anything wrong.
Fu: "What did you expect?!? Our 22 legs on offense were going up against their 88 legs on defense. What other Offensive Coordinator in the P5 could beat a team with 88 legs?"
Between last week and this game, my expectations have been completely reset for this team. The way they are playing and coaching we'll be lucky to go bowling.
At least we are still in the running for State Champion.
I mean, even if we qualify Fu will "poll the players" and decide not to go.
It looks like minutiae is pretty wrinkly this week. Glad Brad earned his paycheck this week.
This Richmond coach is a puss. You're on the road giving an in-state FBS school that can't score to save their lives all sorts of problems yet you're here punting the ball away with 4+ mins to go??
I guess we're lucky to have been playing another "not to lose" coaching staff.
That's close to saying Fu outcoached someone...
I'm not looking forward to 9/9
Because it is behind us?
Here's a good general rule:
When you are playing against a team that can't afford to put players names on their jerseys...winning by anything less than 20 should make you ashamed.
No names on the jersey may be intentional.
It's pretty simple now. We've reached out ceiling with Fuentes. Struggling with UR is his ceiling once he has his guys. Until he's gone we will be exactly this good. We're just in purgatory until he's gone.
Thoughts:
(1) I know a win is a win.
(2) If I was told at the start of the season that we would be 3-1 after 4 games, I would have been pretty happy.
(3) But good lord, 14 total offensive points against the Spiders?
If ever we need a meh thread, this is it.
Glad we didn't run the score up
Corn Fu are class guys I guess.
You could say that, I guess
I don't even care about Giftory. Not sure there's enough content any way... maybe some of our punts?
If you saw the first drive then that's all there is for giftory
Robinson had a good return.
Hollifield had some good tackles.
This. Please no Fam thread.
All of Dax's tackles would be fun to watch.
Feunte: "We still got a lot of work to do"
No fucking shit Sherlock. You've been saying this for 5-yrs. Figure it out!
I'd start with checking Indeed.com.
If he hasn't figured it out yet he won't.
Change OC! The play calling was very good against UNC, but he had MONTHS to plan. The problem lies in a 5-6 day time frame.....it doesn't appear he preps (film study , etc) beyond that time window (from the end of the prior game). Maybe with the bye week, the ND game will be good (better).
I could be total wrong, but look at the results...
The defense gave up one TD after the Richmond interception return to the 10 yard line. Kudos to them.
My bad, Richmond brought the ball back to the 16. Still the defense played VERY well, IMHO,
BB3 is clearly playing hurt...yet the "mastermind" makes him the leading rusher for the day (at least befor JH0 last 2 carries). 11...11(!) friggin runs for him. Well...we must have had a ton of yards...nope BB3 had 35 yards on those 11 (11!) carries. We had a whopping TOTAL of 106 rushing yards.
BB3 had a lot of keepers because he hadn't run at all this year and they wanted to show he could.
Total meh thread wtf
Great interview with Tre.
I got more out of him and his thoughts on the game than Fu.
The players are walking off the field and look completely unhappy...no wonder we have so many transfers
At leas they all seem disappointed in this win too
Wrong thread, but Bowling Green leading Minnesota with 2:41 left.
Every tendency/weakness that West Virginia exposed was still on display today, Richmond just couldn't capitalize as well. At this time, this far into Fuente's tenure, I don't have much hope of correcting these issues. As ever, we'll be depending on the incompetence of others for a decent chunk of our success (e.g. >7 wins, winning the Coastal).
If Fu isn't ready to move on from Corn, then I'm ready to move on from Fu. It really sucks that doing so probably means another school is going to get a rising star DC in Hamilton and a very good O-line coach in Vice.
The offense scored 14 points and handed them 7 so really the offense netted 7 points against an FCS opponent
Fu will never divorce himself from Corn. He will go down with that ship right or wrong.
Corn is a used dinghy with 3 holes in the hull the size of a grapefruit, a seized 2 stroke motor, floating aimlessly in the Arctic with a Cat 5 Hurricane bearing down on it.
Good Luck, Justin!
It's been 3 years since I've seen a game in person. Got to be there today and it was painfully obvious how bad our offense is. I've never been a fan of CornFu but it was something else being there in person.
What role does our QB play in our offense? Braxton is a great runner and a tough player but he's an objectively bad passer and he's either 1. terrible at the read part of the read option or 2. been told not to run at which point we're not running a read option anymore.
I have no idea what our offense is. Run? Pass? Neither? We tried some things today but nothing worked so...
It's been *6* years and I have no idea what CornFu is doing with this offense. But I don't donate enough so they probably don't care.
I will give a shout out to JHam though. Last year started rough but the defense has improved over time and they look like a unit that will keep us in any game this year. I think he's got a ton of potential and I'm excited for that side of the ball.
Oh! What was Fuente's plan using the last two timeouts before half?
The two timeouts at the end of the half are probably the right call. You have them inside the three yard line if I recall correctly. Makes kneeling problematic and forces them to run the ball for at least one play where you are hoping for a fumble.
2021 is the best opportunity for us to win the conference in a decade, and I just wish we had the offense and kicker to take advantage of it.
