For some reason I had it in my head that Fuente lead teams have not performed well off the bye week. Pulling up our past records shows some interesting results...
| Year | Result | Score | Opponent | H/A | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2016 | W | 34 - 3 | UNC | Away | Hurricane Matthews |
| 2017 | W | 59 - 7 | UNC | Home | Fuente really didn't like Fedora |
| 2018 | L | 49 - 28 | GT | Home | |
| 2019 | L | 45 - 10 | Duke | Home | |
| 2019 | L | 21 - 20 | ND | Away | 2 bye weeks this year due to the extra week |
| 2020 | L | 45 - 10 | Clemson | Home |
So in summary, we seemed to generally have UNC's number during the Fedora era but otherwise our efforts off the bye are pretty disappointing.

Not good, Bob!
What especially stings is the 1-3 home record, with losses to GT & Duke. I'm feeling ill just thinking about those games. And just when I had talked myself into feeling OK about having outlasted mighty Richmond.
yeah but look at those powerhouse teams that we had to play after the Bye. GT was a monster in 2018. That Duke team was one for the ages! ND is always a national title contender and Clemson is the hottest thing since sliced bread. You can barely blame the guy for those tough losses

I guess the good news is that we're due for a W. We all know how Fuente feels about streaks. That 4 game L streak has to end at some point, right? Go Hokies! #BeatND
if Andy Reid can't get away with the 'need to do a better job' thing, neither can BC
It has to be the players fault, it could not possibly be the fault of vaunted offensive genius coaches!
Typically when a person uses the word "We" they are including themselves in the group. Both coaches and players need to improve if the unit is going to be more effective.
The first step in fixing a problem is identifying you have a problem. We. That's a start.
sure, it's a start. But this is something that he should have started doing after 2018. 3 years too late IMO
Can we stop using every word that comes out of his mouth as an opportunity to relitigate his career?
Forgot the '19 Duke game was after a bye. Yeesh
I may be misremembering, but was that also the Homecoming game where we brought out the 1999-2000 Football Team?
That, I do not know.
edit: it appears the UNC game was homecoming that year, but that they botched the honoring anyway
Yes, it was that game. And they really didn't do that team justice. I was expecting a really great tribute and left very disappointed.
Edit: it was not the homecoming game. Other point still stands.
We should only schedule UNC after bye weeks.
Or first game of the season
why stop there? Why don't we just play UNC every week?
yes, this is the take-away. Leg
My takeaway is that Fuente needs to start hating these other coaches like he hated Fedora.
Or during rain storms.
why do we even look at the stats, just more misery
maybe that's why Justin Fuente didn't know what ProFootballFocus was
If you ask Fuente about last year he'd tell you that the Clemson game was a win because they competed for two quarters
Yes, the second half of that game was really the start of year one.
Situationally, the outcomes are like this:
2016: Good
2017: Great
2018: Bad - but, end of chop-block era (and blame is mostly on D on this one)
2019 (Duke): Historically Bad - no excuse
2019 (ND): Decent and almost really good, considering ND's talent that year
2020 - irrelevant; COVID and it was Clemson
Is the Covid part sarcasm lol
I would upgrade the 2016 result to great. It was a decisive win against a pretty good football team and a pretty good coaching job. Most teams that played in that weather were too rigid with their game plans.
Losing to Duke...after a bye...at home...at night is absolutely a fire-able offense.
I know there are a lot of pundits outside the program that are flummoxed that he is still the head coach here.
I think what's really concerning is Vegas set the O/U against the bye week at 13.5, and I'm putting my retirement account on the under.
