First note, VT needs to trim these videos 34 minutes before Price even sits down.
Second, that's the best Head Coach interview VT has had in 6 years and the guy had like 2 days to prepare after getting a very significant role change.

I'm not going to pretend to know VTs tech infrastructure but just from a data storage cost perspective doubling the size of media files unnecessarily costs money.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Not to be too geeky (can't help it, engineering major), if we are using cloud technologies (which I hope we are and are being leaders) the storage costs may be unnecessary, but would be negligible. I think the curtailing of the length of videos should be more of a user experience consideration than anything else.

Agreed. Cloud data storage is so inexpensive, that its less expensive for the company I work for to keep a bunch of garbage data in the cloud forever, than it is to pay someone to sift through the garbage and only keep the good stuff.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Sounds like me and hard drives, tbh. Ain't nobody got time to sift through all that crap, so I guess I should just replace that 2TB drive with an 8TB drive.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
"Cloud technologies" seems like such an odd field for a research university to be involved it (from the research side). Using virtualize data centers makes sense.
I could see VT researching how to make more data dense storage, or how to fit more transistors on silicon, but those aren't cloud specific.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
They don't have to do research on cloud. VT had a whole IT department and IT infrastructure that had nothing to do with research. it's just a tool. Why maintain your own virtualized data center when AWS can do it for you?

That's just it, while we could do that we are D1 School and our media room should be more than a couple of Yeti microphones running through a $100 sound board.
I am all for not wasting money, but there are classrooms at Tech that have a better audio setup.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The media room is even worse than you know. It's in the basement with exposed utilities and cinderblock, a wooden podium from the 90's, and it's about the size of a medium sized bedroom. The media work area in the next room is even worse.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Hopefully this is something that is planned to be addressed with the reach for excellence campaign. If Whit wants the next HC to engage with the community better a small part of that would be making the media members somewhat comfortable and fans being able to hear the questions asked.

Isn't that, like... standard? I've been in my fair share of D1 and NFL media rooms and you just described every single one of them. Under the stands, cinderblock walls, fold-up chairs, cables duct-taped to the floor, but a really nice background behind the coach.

I am in die hard Sheetz country. We don't call it Sheetz, we call it Sheetz's because it was started in Altoona, about half an hour down the road. There isn't a Wawa anywhere near by.
Oh and all six of Sheetz's places here in town have free air. Rarely out of order and if it is, fixed quickly.

The reason gasoline retail prices fluctuate so much is because the prices the station has to pay the wholesaler fluctuate day today and sometimes hour to hour. If a station takes several deliveries a week, they will likely be paying different prices for each of this deliveries.

Same here for me. After moving to Dallas I was immediately looking for a Sheetz / WaWa type of convenience store and QT is the closest, in my opinion. RaceTrac and Valero just didn't hit the same.
Now Buc-ee's, they're a whole different spectacle. I almost always stop if there is one on my route.

I just have to add that this free air conversation on TKP is so much more enjoyable to read than practically anything else re to VT football for the past few seasons. Definitely a breath of fresh free air, along with JC's presser! Anybody know if there's an app to locate stations with free air similar to gas price apps?

I wonder if Tre was willing to do this for BC and Fuente wouldn't let him. If so, that might have sparked the outburst from his mom. It may also be one of the things JC is alluding to when he talks about doing the best things for the players.

Great job by JC energizing a fanbase that has been through a lot.

It makes sense. Beamer influenced him for 4 years when he was going through one of the biggest transitions of his life and Fuente was around him for 11 months at a point in his life where he already knew who he was.
He's probably patterned a lot of his coaching behavior on Beamer.

Why would a staff member go out in public to say ANYTHING negative about the coach who hired and supported him? That kind of stuff happens in bars and internet chat rooms, but not by a coach behind the mic. It would be disrespectful to the program.

It is quite the pot he has been thrown into. My 2 most hated teams at their homes with a new coach. Rather daunting! However, if he can bring life back into our team, I'm all in plus the $10K donation I'm sitting on.
I moved up here 31 years ago. I feel in love with Blacksburg and VT football. We lost a few back then, but by God the other team knew they were in a fight. I became totally committed.
What if he does win 2-0? Whit has to consider JC as relevant.
I don't want another coach that may use VT as a stepping stone. I'm on the Coach Price band wagon. Go Hokies!!

God Speed J.C. I was in Lane Stadium when that 1995 team beat Miami. If there is anyone that knows what it means to scrap and fight and punch above your weight class, it's guys from that team. The thing that made VT football what it is is exactly what you saw with JC in that video. He's humble, intelligent, talented and determined. I don't know what will happen on Saturday against Miami, but I know what to expect. It's gonna be 4 quarters of football. The best team will win. I'm gonna put my money on us. GO HOKIES!

I wish I was savvy enough to do this, but can someone make a gif of him getting excited about the details of D-Line? around 16:12-16:15 ish. But that moment gave a ton of warm and fuzzies to see him get amped up!

His comment "I don't have bad days. I only have good days and great days" is so emblematic of loving Virginia Tech and what we look for in a head coach. It's also great life advice. Goddamn I like this guy.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I actually feel for him a bit for reasons he touched on. Head coach at VT is a dream job for him, something he'll always want. He has it now but knows there's maybe a 0.1% chance he keeps it after these next 2 games, and he only has it because his former boss was just fired. He should be happy about it, but you can tell he's not. I'm happy for him and sad for him at the same time. Either way, I hope we're able to keep him around, someone like him is a great representative for the school and should help on recruiting given the correct opportunity.
That said, the fact we've never heard from him before, and never heard that we had a guy with this much passion about VT speak publicly about that. All I can do is shake my head. Imagine having guys like JC and Darryl Tapp on staff and muzzling their passion for VT publicly.

Is there seriously no way to Fast Forward this???
Would love to hear this but staring at a chair for 30+ minutes is only slightly less agonizing than a Fuente Presser.
Kinda embarrasing...not exactly inventing the future here...
I just clicked ahead to the 35 minute area. But who edits this crap?
On mobile and no slider or bar to advance that I can find...

The hokiesports site has come so far and still has a ways to go. Getting Whit's presser on my TV Tuesday night was sisyphean.
I'm not going to pretend to know VTs tech infrastructure but just from a data storage cost perspective doubling the size of media files unnecessarily costs money.
Hey... those Gateway 2000s running Windows'95 work perfectly well. Why would you replace them?
Not to be too geeky (can't help it, engineering major), if we are using cloud technologies (which I hope we are and are being leaders) the storage costs may be unnecessary, but would be negligible. I think the curtailing of the length of videos should be more of a user experience consideration than anything else.
Fair, i work on a mainly archaic physical server infrastructure so it hurts my brain.

"Those kids practiced their hind butts off"
Gotta love JC. Great choice for interim HC.
Definitely focused on going 1-0 this week.
I can't hear the questions very clearly...
Never can from the room. I think they put a mic on the zoom computer.
You can install good audio/video conferencing equipment with mics to pick up the whole room for not a lot of money. This frustrates me to no end.
You can get a good Yeti mic for a couple hundred bones. World of difference.
you could rig it up with a couple of monoprice condenser mics and a usb sound board from amazon and get it all for less than the price of the yeti.
That's just it, while we could do that we are D1 School and our media room should be more than a couple of Yeti microphones running through a $100 sound board.
I am all for not wasting money, but there are classrooms at Tech that have a better audio setup.
Yeah, those Hyflex classrooms can be a few grand in audio & video stuff.
The media room is even worse than you know. It's in the basement with exposed utilities and cinderblock, a wooden podium from the 90's, and it's about the size of a medium sized bedroom. The media work area in the next room is even worse.

this made me LOL
Tech does not give the reporters a microphone. I suppose they would rather we guess what the question was once we hear the answer! Number 1 reason I rarely listen to VT press conferences.
What is the issue with Tre? And why is he driving to Miami?
Has a weird injury that would be exacerbated by flying, so he's driving to be able to play on Saturday. From my Orange Bowl experience...it's a long fucking drive
Thanks! I second that. I did it from Jersey in 2008 for the Orange Bowl. Thankfully I'm no longer a poor student anymore

Has free air somewhere either in chest or neck, the pressure change would be very painful.
Serious question(s):
couldn't a hard hit to the upper body or a fall to the ground also create a painful pressure change? & what is "free air"?
EDIT: love circling back to this and seeing what my Actual Serious Question hath wrought π Also: but for real - what is free air
They used to have it at gas stations back in the day. It's usually at least a dollar now.
Still free at Wawa.
I guess we know where Tre stands in the great Sheetz vs Wawa debate.BTW, Sheetz charges for air. Just sayin.π€·ββοΈNot the ones I go to. #TeamSheetz
I think you may be right about all of them. It's been a while. Ignore me.
Except I can't find a Sheetz with working air anywhere in the triad.
Altoona! I have family from Altoona (nobody left there). My Uncle's dad owned a place called Ajay's. I don't know if it's still around.
Buy a $40 mini air compressor from Harbor Freight, plug into your cigarette lighter and you'll always have air.
I think what he's saying is that he just shouldn't have to do that.
We used to call them service stations. The least they could do is supply free air. They're making some money on gasoline, I presume.
Actually, gasoline is a break even proposition for most stations. They make their money inside on beverages and snacks.
That's what they say, though they seem to charge different amounts for gas. But they don't have to rob you on air.
If I know they charge for air, I'll stop somewhere else for coffee. And gas.
The reason gasoline retail prices fluctuate so much is because the prices the station has to pay the wholesaler fluctuate day today and sometimes hour to hour. If a station takes several deliveries a week, they will likely be paying different prices for each of this deliveries.
Makes sense. Still, they don't have to rob you for air.
Agree with that.
If it's from Harbor Freight, you better buy 5 of them, because, as they say about Harbor Freight, "if you can't smell it, it ain't workin'"...haha
I don't know of anything free at Wawa. Sheetz has the free air, and I've never had any issues. Only thing at Wawa that's better than Sheetz is the coffee, imho
They still put those in cars?
/s
Every Sheetz in Roanoke either has 12 people lined up waiting to get air. Or the air pump is busted and doesn't work.
QT also has free air still.
I never heard of QT or Buc-ee's til I moved out here.
Back East, I was on Team Sheetz. In the Cold White North, it was Kum & Go or Holiday; both lousy options. I'm not one to ask about coffee, cause I don't drink the stuff.

Too bad he didn't say anything meme-able like speaking the dam truth.
If I'm not mistaken, you gave him a 1 month time out, not a full ban. He left on his own accord and never came back, right.
He is/was a VTPD officer, so it wasn't hard to figure out who he was. He had a lot of good inside info, and then he went full Arnie.
what, you don't think "bone-headedly hard headed" has the same ring to it?
No dork magic there.
Grow up.
I haven't been this excited to watch a game in a long time!
Loved the part when asked about his role on saturday and what he will focus on... maybe its just me that got a laugh but the first thing he said was "time management"
I noticed he mentioned on that he is changing a couple things just to try and get a boost, and then something about "how we eat" was mentioned.
I wonder if that means the players can talk to each other while eating on game day now.
Unlimited turkey bacon
Popcorn before games?
Mutts will join them at every meal and, before they are allowed to eat, start things off with "LETS GO!"
I think so because he talked about team fellowship and bonding
Wait is that a speculation/exaggeration, or were players actually not allowed to talk while eating on game day? I missed that.
yeah I don't remember which thread but I know it has been discussed that this was a Fuente thing, they would eat in silence so they could focus on the game.

Even if he isn't, he'll be back again one day, no doubt. Clearly wants to be here.
He sounds like he would be happy just being the ball boy or the trainer passing out water during breaks.

I wish I was savvy enough to do this, but can someone make a gif of him getting excited about the details of D-Line? around 16:12-16:15 ish. But that moment gave a ton of warm and fuzzies to see him get amped up!
With what little I knew about Price before Tuesday, and having seen what I've seen, and read what I've read now about it....I really really hope the next HC finds a role for him on the next staff.
I just watched this press conference. Very endearing. Well done. His personality comes through, and it's nice to hear his perspective on things.
I always pull for the Hokies, but I'll be pulling especially hard with Price leading this team for the next two weeks.
His comment "I don't have bad days. I only have good days and great days" is so emblematic of loving Virginia Tech and what we look for in a head coach. It's also great life advice. Goddamn I like this guy.
Please spend a few minutes watching:
JC Price highlights
This is what I love(d) about Hokie football.
You don't have to say 'hard smart tough' if you are.
Please bring it back, sir.
Thanks for posting.
WELL WORTH the time to watch.
Wow, feels like I just watched a tutorial on how to put someone on the ground. Talk about closing speed!
That was.... β‘
Dagnabit that's a great watch.
Now who is M.Ques_92?
Well that's not quite true, he had a presser when he was hired for the job.
Hmm, you are technically correct, which is the best kind of correct. But I think my point still stands? Maybe?
Imagine having guys like JC and Darryl Tapp on staff and muzzling their passion for VT publicly.
Yep. It's infuriating.
As someone who has been kicked in the nuts with some work news today, I appreciate the chance to listen to this man show what it means to be a leader.
I hope better days are ahead for you, my fellow Hokie!

Thank you, very much appreciated!
JCP reaching out to former players while wearing a Brotherhood VT shirt...PLS to the next coach keep this man on staff

Love to see it. Really hope he can stay on the new staff and that we see more of this from the new staff.
Very refreshing! I like!
Hot take.... JC Price is already the third most beloved Hokie football coach behind Frank and Bud.
