LETS GO!............but seriously, this new ACC bowl lineup sucks.

We got rid of Detroit it's a plus.

Yea, but other than the Gator Bowl and Cheez-It bowl, everything else is undesirable for a team with any relatively successful season.

Maybe I'm just s grump

I wish we could turn bowl games in places Ike the Bahamas, Boco Raton etc into better tier games. Those are places I want to go. I'm good with NYC though.

The Bahamas bowl is an amazingly awesome, trashy mess every year according to the teams who have played in it.

I been here since day 0.

Half of the ACC's bowl eligible teams are 6-6.

And 6 of our 8 main contracted bowls are against P5 conferences.

We're all playing in the "Damn Glad to Be Here Bowl".

Yep. Agreed. But this will be the shitty bowls available every year no matter if we have 10-2 teams or 6-6. We will have a ton of games that nobody wants to go to or watch on TV which will decrease our revenue and increase the gap

  1. NYC arguably the best city in the US - great location, no need to rent a car, cheap flights, beautiful around the holidays, bars on every corner, what's not to like?
  2. What do want for a 6-6 team? We're mediocre, so we go to a mediocre bowl.

Pre-Pandemic NYC was arguably the best city. Now?

Now almost everything is back to being open again. More people working from home, but that's not really having much of an impact on the day to day, unless you're in the commercial real estate business, or maybe a restaurant owner, but that's an everywhere thing.

Almost. Not really. But. Unless. Maybe.

You make a compelling case.

I mean, if you liked NYC before the pandemic, you'll still like it. If you didn't you probably still won't. It's not much different now is the overall point.

Except it is different. Noticeably. That's my point.

Except you didn't make a point. You made a string of one word sentences which doesn't effectively communicate whatever the hell you're trying to say.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Now it's cheaper and less crowded and all my friends who live there absolutely love it.

It's such a great place now that everybody left...

- Something Yogi Berra didn't say but could have said.

having just gotten home from a day in Manhattan I can assure you that not everybody left

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Warm weather ..... not northeast in middle of winter

Arguably the best city in the U.S.? Nah.

Well, it's certainly arguably the biggest, which explains all the things you listed. Has a lot of stuff everyone should see every once in a while. It's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Not knocking it, and it's a lot of fun. I'd prefer a bowl there to going out west. But as far as bowls go, playing at a baseball park in NYC is where you go for a bowl when things went off the rails. (Just not so far that you have to play in Boston HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA)

Nah, we want warm weather bowls. Florida. New Orleans. That's where you want to go bowling.

If you drink enough, the weather doesn't matter... And NYC has sooooooo many bars

I've lived in places with crappy weather and great bars, and I've lived in places with great weather and great bars.

I'll take the place with great weather and great bars, or even great weather and no bars. I know how to make a margarita.

Best city in the US? What are you smoking? I'd rate NYC as worst city on east coast....expensive, crime, corruption, etc

Don't need a car, is walkable, no shortage of things to do or places to go.

It all depends what you want out of a place to live. If you enjoy city life, can't beat NYC (in the US at least).

You don't need a car in any big city.

New York wins biggest, most expensive city in the world where you can stay up and party all night.

Great if you like bragging about how much money you make, while simultaneously living in a tiny apartment and not having a car. But you will be able to find a world class drinking hole.

You don't need a car in any big city.

No really. SF, NYC, Chicago, Boston, and maybe DC are the only places in the US that have a robust and extensive public transit system that allows individuals to reach any almost part of the city in a reasonable amount of time at a reasonable cost

A couple of points.

While nowhere near as robust as Europe, most big cities have some form of public transit, and at least have a bus system. There is also ridesharing and Uber.

Americans always think they need a car.

I updated for you.

Yes, places like LA, Atlanta, and Baltimore all have public transit. No, it's not practical to live without a car.

I feel like you're getting sidetracked from your "NYC is the best city" argument.

I know folks who live in big cities that choose not to own a car. It can be done. Between car payments, insurance, taxes, gas, and parking, sometimes it's more practical NOT to have a car.

The future is going to result in a lot less car ownership because of environmental concerns, costs, and the advent of driverless cars. It can't get here soon enough for me.

Driverless cars don't really solve much. Let's circle back on their 'advent' in 20 years or so.

All the new safety features (up to, and including driverless) aid in driving. The weakest link in safety on the roads is the ego-driven, mistake-ridden human element.

While I love to drive, most driving seems to me to like a video game, where you have some drivers who seem to have skills, and some who make random and somewhat unaware decisions.

I'd love to be able to hop in a car, give it the address, and go to sleep or read in the back seat. Sure, you can do that now, but you have to pay a driver.

Seems to me that when driverless cars are a reality, you may not bother owning a car, as you can just order one on your cellphone and it will meet you at your sidewalk in ten minutes. Eliminates carrying costs and needing a space for it at your house.

Americans also think the moon landing was fake.

🤷‍♂️

End of the day, Pinstripe bowl should be fun assuming the Hokies have enough players to field a team.

Americans also think the moon landing was fake.

Yep. Reminds me of one of my favorite little sayings. Consider the intelligence of the average American. Then remember that half of the country is dumber.

To quote the Brothers Osborne: "I'm Good For Some But I'm Not For Everyone"

by definition, wouldn't half of americans be dumber than the MEDIAN intelligence?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

well that's just MEAN to point out

The RANGE of comments about this is impressive.

I feel like Clark Griswold when his father in law points out his shortcomings. 😂

The saying doesn't go over well with non engineers when you say that half the country is dumber than the median. You have to then educate your audience on the difference in average and median. Most people grasp average easily. So while technically wrong the point is generally understood.

Edit: Engineers 🙄🙄🙄🙄

To quote the Brothers Osborne: "I'm Good For Some But I'm Not For Everyone"

The bowl is a great excuse to go to New York, and New York is a great excuse to go to the bowl.

If you want to do either, the other is a bonus.

Americans also think the moon landing was fake

Well, the moon is made of cheese. Did the astronauts bring back any cheese? No, they did not.

French hates the moon, confirmed.

So your more likely to be a victim of a crime in Roanoke than NYC.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

Fun with statistics, huh?

In Roanoke, you can afford to live in a neighborhood where the likelihood is that WON'T get robbed.

I wouldn't want to live in NYC for the record, but Roanoke is quickly going downhill where you can't afford housing in a "safe" part of town...which is exactly why I moved from Roanoke back to Christiansburg.

"GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM LITTLE BROTHER, THE CUP IS COMIN’ ON HOME!”

Where in the world are you getting your data? According to a CBS article in 2020, there are 3 cities in NY ranked in the top 50 cities for crime rates in the US and none of them are NYC or anywhere close.

I'm nowhere near being a statistics expert, but I know enough to know that many statistics are skewed.

And glancing quickly at that list I'd guess it's skewed against places with fewer actual residents. Like beach communities in South Florida.

There are parts of NYC that you probably shouldn't go to. Maybe the same in West Palm Beach, but I don't know. I'd guess either place is safe to visit.

Stay out of Brooklyn Brownsville Harlem etc.

Why the downvote if you grew up or lived there you'd understand why outsiders should stay away

Didn't DV but I've visited both Brooklyn and Harlem multiple times and had no issues. Painting with broad strokes is a fallacy and can come across as ignorant

Onward and upward

I lived in Florida 10 years and had no issues. YMMV.

Just sayin'.

yeah, exactly

Onward and upward

Not a broad stroke if you live and/or come back for months at a time every year. My point is stay out of certain areas and there are no issues. I believe you have no problems if you are where it's tourist friendly.

To say that you should avoid "Brooklyn" is ridiculous. Brooklyn includes neighborhoods like Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Dumbo, Park Slope, Cobble Hill, Carol Gardens, and others that are some of the nicest in the city. Brooklyn alone is about the same size population wise as Chicago, so it's ill-advised to write off the whole borough.

Not to speak for OP, but I think it may have been referring to the Brownsville section of Brooklyn.

I guess that's possible. Regardless, Harlem isn't what it used to be either and if you stay through NYE I'd recommend finding a good soul food place in Harlem on New Year's Day.

That's exactly what I meant. Wasn't writing off the entire borough. Not hard to infer

So how would someone who is not familiar with NYC know that?

Location
Ponte Vedra Beach, FLORIDA

Lack of self-awareness aside, I think we all hear what OP is really saying.

Ponte Vedra BEACH, Florida

I guess you're saying he lives in a better place to winter than NYC.

I'm saying he comes across like John Rocker and lives in a glass house.

I was more defending the beach over NYC, not any other kind of advocacy.

Generic crime rates do not tell you anything. Basically, when more people are around your chances of being victimized increase. Relative to other cities NYC has its more dangerous spots but they are highly concentrated.

Honestly, this is pretty damn good outcome for a 6-6 VT team. Geographic rival with a chance for some 2013 revenge. I might turn this into a cool NYC trip if I can swing it.

I was hoping for a UMD match-up.

The 2013 was my last home game as a student and I'll never forget the sickening feel of CJ Brown running in for the TD in OT.

I'd rather face Maryland when we're at full strength.

This year, my fear is that we're limping into the game, and some of our best players won't be participating. I think Maryland is on our schedule in the next few years.

So looking at flying up with Mrs. Fireman, it would be my first trip to NYC and her first winter trip. Someone give me your beat three day guide, (late Monday maybe) Tuesday fly in early, game 2:15 on Wednesday and fly out late Thursday. I want to see some sites but not get caught in tourist traps.

Just looked at Hamilton tickets, o boy.

I paused the movie and told my kids. This is my nightmare, you can't even vacuum that stuff up. It is like sand from the beach. It gets everywhere until the end of time and does not make me happy.

Edit: I too have 4 girls. With your age range, I'm pretty sure you checked out this movie.

First thing I would do is right now see if you can reservation to the Comedy Cellar (or one of their other stages). You can reserve without paying so it's no commitment, but that was always my go-to when I had people visit.

If you wanna see Lady Liberty, just take the free Staten Island ferry.

Also, I moved away in June, but I'm pretty you need a vaccine card to do pretty much anything these days

Can confirm, museums, indoor dining require proof.

FWIW, this just hit my newsfeed:

NYC Vaccine Mandate

Seems focused on workers & kids who live/work/go to school in NYC, but has obvious implications for visitors as well. Quoting from the article:

De Blasio's office also said it is broadening "Key to NYC," its program requiring proof of vaccination for indoor dining, fitness and entertainment--expanding the measure to include 5- to 11-year-olds.
[...]
Beginning Dec. 14, the program will require children aged 5-11 to show proof of one vaccination dose for those venues, and starting Dec. 27, New Yorkers aged 12 and older will be required to show proof of two vaccine doses, instead of one, except for those who have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Make sure you've factored whatever is legally required into your plans.

What do you and the wife like to do? Drinkers, foodies, pop culture, sight seeing, history, comedy, etc?

+1 for comedy cellar. On a bad night, one of the writers from SNL will perform. On a good night, someone amazing (Chapelle, Maher, Aziz, etc) will come through to test new material.

So if you're a foodie, Kochi is the place to go right now - it's getting all kinds of insane accolades. I've also been hearing a lot about Crown Shy and Atoboy. Of course, there's classics like Gramercy Tavern. But you can google the NYC restaurant scene to see the hottest restaurants right now. Or you can just wonder and fine some holes in the wall.

Must see sights... 9/11 memorial is cool, ellis island and the statue of liberty are cool too. MODA is... interesting. The Brooklyn subway museum is really cool - one of the better museums I've ever been to.

I haven't done any of the christmas things in NYC, but I've heard that the bronx zoo and botanical garden do cool stuff. Everyone talks about this one neighborhood in long island (I can't remember the name of it) that does insane christmas lights.

I'm not sure the exact ages of your kiddos so they might not like a long performance, but my parents took us to see the Rockets at Radio City around that age and it was great!

I saw you were looking for Hamilton tickets. By the time you buy 6, you're probably looking at a mortgage payment. If you want your girls to experience Broadway, I suggest TKTS. It is a booth in Time Square and they sell discount tickets the day of a show. I was able to score Lion King tickets years ago for a great price.

If you haven't seen it already, I would 100% suggest the Freedom Tower and surrounding memorials. And I'm guessing you might be interested in the Firefighter's memorial.

For Christmas stuff, you have to hit up the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree and the Christmas Markets are fun as well (might not be a kid thing). The Bronx Zoo has a really cool Christmas light show. I would avoid all of the iceskating rinks. They are super crowded and you don't get much time on the ice. If you're a religious person, a lot of the Churches are beautifully decorated at Christmas (St. Patricks on 5th ave is my favorite). FAO Swartz is also a lot of fun for kids. Macy's at Herald Square has amazing Christmas window displays.

Oh my bad! A lot of the stuff I listed is probably even better without kids 😂

Central Park carriage in snow. it's cheesy but memorable.
Walk down 5th Avenue to see the Christmas decorations and window displays, from Park to Ironclad if you can. Will also see some recognizable movie backdrops.
Rockefeller Center. Tree, ice skating, tour and top of the Rock. All good.
West Village for some nice eats and a walk around.
Take in a Show.
Colbert, Meyers or Fallon if you like late night and ok to wait in line.
Eataly, for the foodie in you.

Any combination of that with the game and your good for 3 days or so.

Going up the 18-24th, so I'll edit this as required.
- Christmas things: go to Rockefeller, New York Palace Hotel has a great tree for pictures that's less busy, and Bryant Park Christmas market is a lot of fun
-Comedy Cellar on Macdougal Street. Lineup not posted till week of, but you can reserve table now with no cost. Cover depends on night.
-See a show of some sort. We're doing To Kill a Mockingbird while Jeff Daniela is still Atticus. Also seeing the ballet.
-Staten Island Ferry: free booze cruise with great views
-The Met: you're not gonna see everything and don't try
-Food musts: Keens Steakhouse for the lamb chops, Gray's Papaya for a cheap but perfect Hot Dog, Katz for pastrami, Russ and Daughters for bagels and lox
-Drink musts: Dead Rabbit down in Financial District (even better if you go during Happy Hour when oysters are 50 cents), Attaboy near Chinatown, Amor y Amargo in the East Village

Unpopular opinions: avoid Times Square like the plague, and precisely zero of the observation decks are worth the price of admission.

I want to second Bryant Park. When we did NYC years ago around the holidays, that was my favorite spot that I hadn't heard of before going.

My girlfriend at the time was determined to go to Serendipity 3. We put our names on the waitlist and went across the street for pizza, which was phenomenal. I think t was Patsy's Pizzeria. Serendipty 3 was cool and it was nice to make my girl happy, but not sure sure it was worth the wait for "frozen hot chocolate".

Unpopular opinions: avoid Times Square like the plague, and precisely zero of the observation decks are worth the price of admission.

Well, unpopular opinion for first time tourists, but probably the single most popular piece of advice from anyone that's ever lived or spent significant time in the city haha.

That being said, I usually recommend that people go once, just to see it, take their pictures, listen to the peruvian flute music, get pushed around by too many people, walk into the other first timers stopped on the sidewalk taking pictures, etc. Basically go once so you can see all the lights and then realize it's a garbage place and convince you that you never need to go back and can then actually go explore the fun parts of the city. Also avoid going into any of the stores (or observation decks, as you noted) lining Times Square - it's pretty much 100% overpriced trash in overcrowded stores and restaurants, biggest tourist traps in the city.

Update:
Ballet got cancelled, Mockingbird did not and I highly recommend going if you haven't seen it. Jeff Daniels as Atticus is perfect, and it plays a bit like a comedy at times. The dialogue is very similar to early seasons of the West Wing.

Comedy Cellar is a must if you can swing it. I've seen Daniel Sloss, Tom Segura, Nate Bargatze, and Jim Jefferies live this year, and the no names at the Cellar made me laugh way harder for way longer than those guys.

Whoever suggested Kochi, it was amazing. But warning for everyone else: dinner two is about 250. 500 if you do the drink pairing. Worth it.

Restaurant recs: stand by all the previous ones. Corcoron, Thai Diner, Casa Dani all extremely good too.

Bars: Patent Pending was best all around. It's a Nikola Tesla themed cocktail bar. Thyme Bar has really great drinks with unique presentations. Death and Company is outstanding and has a deep menu, so highly recommend not making it your fourth cocktail bar of the evening like I did.

Also, despite being vaxxed, boostered, and careful about masking and distancing, I STILL got COVID. So make good choices, but recognize that Omicron is infectious as hell, and may present as normal winter stuffiness.

Solid recs

^^^this guy knows how to party.

As an aside, the creators of Death and Co. put out possibly the greatest cocktail book ever called Cocktail Codex.

9-11 memorial is epic. Plan to spend many hrs there if you go. Go to Lombardi's for pizza (I think it's the original NYC pizza joint and pretty solid flavors). Laduree is a famous French macaroon shop (been to one there, Paris, and Doha. May not be for everyone, but we enjoy it). We enjoyed the Met and as someone said don't plan to see it all. The Christmas markets are fun and we really enjoyed the tree at Rockefeller Tower. If you have any affiliation with the military, there's a USO in the bus terminal where you can score free tickets to broadway shows. They didn't have the top shows, but we got tickets to Phantom and Honeymoon in Vegas (didn't do well with critics but it was wonderful).

Maryland is at worst a meh state... and really only cuz the food culture should be so much better around the Chesapeake.

I think this bowl will be a good one. My only advice is do some advanced planning prior to descending on Yankee stadium. The more research and things you line up ahead of time, the more enjoyable your experience in the Bronx (and surrounding area) will be.

There's a reason Missouri sounds like "misery"...

As someone who spent 6 mostly miserable years in Misery / er, Missouri, I wholeheartedly endorse this post. Last 6 months was actually pretty good, but was so happy to be getting out of the St. Louis area (was in Florissant) and heading off to VT.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

I had to do work in the middle of the Ozarks. I never want to go back.

Can't speak to the rest of the state but I lived in KCMO for about 6 months and really liked it. Would happily live there... People were friendly and unassuming, plenty of organic local flavor, cost of living was low compared to the high quality of life, podunk airport but centrally located so easy and inexpensive to get almost anywhere. It's also a legitimate gilded age city with real culture, interesting history, not some plastic over-grown suburban strip mall like Charlotte.

The BBQ is overrated though (if you need sauce it's because your meat isn't very good).

KCMO is awesome. Was really the first place my wife and I considered retiring too. Then we had three straight winters with no snow and just wind. No thanks.

But KCMO in spring through fall is awesome.

The state is covered in a fine layer of Old Bay at this point like some kind of nuclear fall out. My problem with Marylanders and Old Bay is that they over use it so egregiously, they make Old Bay worse because they try to put it on things that have no business having Old Bay on them.

It doesn't the level of coverage that other states do because it is so small, but I have to go with Connecticut as worse than these. CT is the only place I am aware of where if you are on a one way street and you miss your turn, it is standard operating practice to back up an entire block to make your turn. And I'm not talking about tiny little streets. I'm talking about Whitney Avenue. The main north-south road in New Haven. Even my Italian post-doc friends* and a Greek grad student were horrified at CT driving.

Live/lived in the first two. There is an important distinction here:

Maryland drivers are erratic. There is no patter to what they do which makes them terrifying to drive with because you cannot predict behaviors.

Jersey drivers are aggressive. They drive fast and assume you know the rules of the road. If you don't (Marylander or southerner) it feels intimidating to drive in. But if you kick it 10 MPH over in the slow lane, you'll be fine. Try that in Maryland and you'll get side swiped by a car trying to pass you on the right in a no shoulder area.

disagree that NJ drivers are "aggressive" as much as it is "fast". We got places to be, and we're all in it together commute-wise lol

Well true, but NW New Jersey is a little different than the eastern and southern parts of the state. It's the city side that can't drive and has never seen a deer. But to your point, the New Jersey that no one ever thinks about is quite nice. Lots of lakes, farmland and forests.

I wish. Most of the MD drivers I encounter are camped out in the far left lane going at or below the posted limit, and clearly have all day to get wherever the fuck it is they're going.

As another poster said, the problem is their unpredictability. They could be going 40 in the left lane or 90 on the shoulder.

Right.
I drove into Quantico for work daily from points south.
No turn signals from anyone at 85 mph on 95.

Don't want to give the enemy your intentions, I was told.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

No turn signals from anyone at 85 mph on 95.

I learned this when I moved to NoVa 5yrs ago. No one. And I mean no one lets you over when you put on a signal. I believe a turn signal is actually a signal for the other driver to speed up and not allow you over in NoVa......lol

Florida has something to say about this. It's mostly cursing and unintelligible, but in Florida you have people who have aged out of other states and you don't to get your car inspected. Combine this with no helmet laws for motorcycles and that's a perfect storm of what-the-fuckery.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Oh yea every spring I tow my boat to the Keys and going past Miami is the absolute worst, white knuckle three hours of driving possible in the country. Best to do it in the middle of the night when there's half the idiots on the road. Only problem is all of the other idiots are then driving even faster and crazier.

Three degrees of separation on this story but I know of a guy who got a flat on his 35" tire on his dumb lifted truck near Tampa. He tried to patch it then reset the bead on the tire and rim with the old redneck hairspray trick, while on the side of the highway. One of his girlfriends (he has two) leaned in too close when he lit it, after he used too much hairspray that was presumably hers, and all of her heavy makeup and hairspray caught on fire in the ensuing flash and she got 2nd and 3rd degree burns all over her body. Now that's some serious Florida man shit / bad driving and quite the sight to see during rush hour.

As far as white knuckle driving, yeah, it's bad if you drive there the wrong time of day (any afternoon or rush hour). It's not really different than Atlanta or Charlotte, if you do those cities the wrong time of day (any afternoon or rush hour). Late night or late morning works best. For me, the worst part of that godforsaken drive to the keys is without doubt the three hours through the keys, which are terrible if you do them in the afternoon or on a Friday. But at least you're in the Keys, and if you have the right mindset (and realize that part of the drive can't be rushed), it's fine. Word to the wise: if you're involved in an accident there, save yourself a bunch of time and send it to Miami, NOT Key West, where nobody has any idea how to fix cars.

For me, Atlanta is the worst driving city, though It's actually quite similar to Miami in that people drive on the downtown highway like they have no fear that there is any possibility of law enforcement being there, and will use any of the abundant number of lanes to prove that they're a better videogame driver than you, and that they are willing to drive their car faster and closer to the other cars that you are, at high rates of speed. Any large city on the east coast (Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, D.C., New York) will destroy your schedule during any afternoon rush hour, or if there's an accident.

no one's mentioned Houston yet and so far that's the only city where I had to drive like an idiot to defend myself from all the other idiots

Probably because most folks here don't have to drive through Houston to get to anywhere else.

I did this past summer. Never been as far south as Miami, but if they're the same, yikes

I've driven in every area listed thus far and NONE of them can hold a candle to westbound I-4 in Orlando from 5 am to 6:30 am. I have never seen or experienced anything like it. There is a culture there that, not surprisingly for Florida, creeps along 5-15 mph under the limit clutching the wheel with both hands hoping to beat traffic through downtown to be first in line at the parks. However, there is also a culture there that drives in excess of 100 mph in small sports cars and motorcycles weaving around and through the relatively slow and extremely slow cars like a video game. It is terrifying because the roads are constantly under construction, lane shifts, yellow flashing lights, and stray barrels and cones are everywhere, and there is no place to hide. You have to watch out 360 degrees at all times. I'm doing 10 over with the majority, dodging great grandpa, and waiting for a motorcycle to come flying over me from behind like an Evil Knievel stunt.

I can attest to this. Also, 60 from Tampa to Clearwater is hellish as well. Bumper to bumper 90mph enclosed with jersey barriers set about 2 inches from your mirrors

I hate all parts of I-4 at all time of day. It'll be a parking lot at different times of day for no reason whatsoever. I avoid it like the plague.

I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

Just drove it today, awful as always.

Orlando is not all that different from pre-rush hour in every major city on the east coast in that regard, though I'm surprised there's an abundance of motorcycles at that hour. If you can drive 10 mph over the speed limit, I consider that smooth traffic. If you start getting the spring action, it's because folks are following too close. The solution for that is allowing more space between cars and smoothing it out. Of course it takes multiple people doing this for it to work.

I would think that from 5am to 6:30 am you're mostly getting people trying to beat rush hour, so limited old folks and tourists.

If there are cars in excess of 100 mph, you can avoid them by letting them pass. On the left. Which is a passing lane, not a cruising lane. My major objection to fast drivers is if they pass me on the right.

What's funny is that in spite of all the complaining about Florida, everyone from everywhere else is flocking there like it's the fountain of youth.

Houston drivers are usually fast, aggressive and don't use turn signals. Wide highways here usually cut down on the traffic, and 65 mph is standard posted speed limit, so anything under 80 is "keeping up with traffic".

"It's a Hokie takeover of The Hill ... in Charlottesville!" -Bill Roth

fast, aggressive and don't use turn signals

yeah, that's what I said: idiots. Speed and aggression are fine, but if you're gonna do A and B, you can't also be doing C. I'll run you off the road on principle and sing a song about it.

It was funny seeing the whole mass of cars decelerate along with me because we'd all gotten notification of a speed trap ahead....then as soon as we passed it everyone was back to crackhead shit.

I think that Florida drivers are a reflection of the state population....whose exploits are often found on The Smoking Gun website. It's amazing how many stories/mug shots/etc. they have are from Florida.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Not even close. As states go, I'd give it to Florida or California. In terms of cities, Memphis wins and it isn't close.

Worst drivers?

Close call, but Maryland is very, VERY competitive. D.C. entitlement meets deep South driving skills. High speed, lack of consideration, and lack of awareness is a dangerous combination.

To me it sounds like you're describing NoVa, except you forgot the part about sending emails on your phone and/or driving 5 under the speed limit in the left hand lane next to a car going the same speed immediately to your right.

Sure, because that doesn't happen in Maryland.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

To be fair, there is plenty of that kind of nonsense anywhere in the D.C. metro area.

Got a ticket for doing 80 on 95N once. Got school for penalty.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

No worse than Virginia drivers. No better either.

I live in Leesburg, so we get a lot of commuters from Maryland and WV. I'd say that 90% of the time I see some crazy asshole going 90 and weaving in and out of traffic with no signals, they're either from Maryland or they have the VA "don't tread on me" license plate.

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

If I remember right, we can even up the all time series with a W. Lets get it!

This is my least favorite year to play them, as neither VT nor Maryland is good this year.

But if it has to be, let's do it.

I just looked at Maryland's schedule. 6-6 with 4 loses to teams ranked in the Top 10 at the time, plus PSU and Minn. Beat Indiana, Illinois, Rutgers in the Big 10. Howard and Kent St. And beat WVa.

Tre, Tay, and Williams are gone. We're going to have our hands full.

Like I said, not my favorite year to play them.

It doesn't help that we're going to have some key players out. On the bright side it's extra practice and real game experience for some of the youngsters we'll need to step up next year.

Some cliffnotes on Maryland's season:

They also went 6-6, 3-6 in the Big Ten, with the conference wins coming against Illinois, Indiana, and Rutgers (none of which were bowl eligible).

The turtles were on the bad end of three blowouts - Iowa (14-51), OSU (17-66), and Michigan (18-59).
As bad as certain parts of this season felt for us, our worst loss was only by 21 points.

Where we were 2-3 in one-score games, Maryland was 3-0.

Our new coach should be able to give us a little bit of a scouting report, as Penn State beat the Terps 31-14.

We did share one common opponent - WVU. Both games had a six point margin, but the biggest difference being that the Terps actually won.

When you adjust for the Fuente factor, we are 10-2 and should win this game handily.

But what about the Corn Corollary? That has to make it tough.

Yankee stadium is in the Bronx. It is close to a subway stop that services the 4 line and the D line.

Airports: JFK and LGA are in Queens, and EWR is in Newark NJ. JFK and EWR are miles better for ability to connect to public transit to get into Manhattan, where most of you will probably be staying to make it a real "NYC Around Christmas" trip.

For EWR, take the AirTrain to NJT, then you can either stay on NJT (NEC/NJC lines) to Midtown at NY Penn, or switch at Newark Penn to get on the PATH train to Downtown/World Trade Center. You can also Uber/lyft/cab, but YMMV on the pricing.

From JFK to go Downtown, take the AirTrain Jamaica train to JZ line (yes, the Jay-Z subway), or the AirTrain Howard Beach train to the A line. For Midtown, you want to take the Airrail Jamaica Train to the E subway line. You can also Uber/lyft/cab, but YMMV on the pricing.

From LGA: lol find a bus, AirTrain isn't operational but is planned. I'm not familiar at all with the bus system and can't help.

Most of the classic NYC In The Winter stuff is found midtown or downtown.

"Downtown" is south of (or "below") Houston St (pronounced How-stin, not Hyoo-stin or You-stin). A rule of thumb is that if you have a street intersection that has no numbers (e.g. Spring & Mulberry), you are Downtown. If the address/intersection has a numbered avenue or street (or both, e.g. 55th and 5th), you are Midtown or Uptown. 60th St and up is technically uptown. When an address is given in the above format, the street is first and the avenue is second. E.g. 55th St and 5th Ave.

Avenues are 1-11, and run North-South. 1st Ave is on the East Side, 11th on the West, which is a little counterintuitive. Streets run East-West, and 1st St is south and they go up as you go higher into the city.

Places I recommend:

  • If you've never been to Times Square, go. It's not scary, and it's worth your time to see it once before you die.
  • See the 9/11 memorial for sure, the museum if you can. The PATH station at WTC is worth seeing as well.
  • The Met (I agree, you won't see everything and don't try) and MoMA are awesome, worth going to.
  • See the Statue of Liberty -- you can either go to Ellis Island or take the Staten Island Ferry to SI and back for free. Do not buy a "discount ticket" from anyone lol
  • The Bryant park and Union Square christmas villages are neat.
  • Rockefeller Center is awesome to see the tree/go ice skating.
  • walk over the brooklyn bridge (edit: AT GOLDEN HOUR) and get pizza in DUMBO (dress warmly for your walk back)
  • walk the High Line, or alternatively walk in Hudson River Park

Some recommonded places to eat:

Finally, don't be turned off by "outdoor dining" -- a LOT of places are taking advantage of the fact that "outdoor dining" in NYC is defined as being a temporary structure with no foundation -- this gives rise to the "Lean-Tos" and "Cabanas" you'll see everywhere. a LOT of them are wooden structures that are totally enclosed with windows, sliding doors, lighting, and heaters. It is essentially indoor dining, but in the street instead of in the permanent building. It may be on the chilly side, but you won't be an icicle if there's a heater inside.

edit: https://citymapper.com/nyc is a nice resource for public transit

So I couldn't decipher which airport do you recommend flying into for staying in Midtown area, around Rockefeller, Times Square area?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

I think the answer was anywhere but Laguardia haha

JFK or Newark Liberty (EWR). LaGuardia (LGA) is the clear third choice option.

EWR is marginally closer to Midtown than JFK is distance-wise, but I think taking the EWR AirTrain to New Jersey Transit train station and then taking NJT to NY Penn is your easiest way to getting to Times Square (NJT stops right at EWR, the AirTrain connects the train station to the terminals and all the terminals to each other). Two NJT lines run through EWR -- North Jersey Coast (ayyyyy that's my line) and Northeast Corridor. Both trains then continue on to NY Penn Station, which will dump you a 10-15 minute walk up 7th Ave to Times Square. (NY Penn is under Madison Square Garden). You could also catch a 1, 2, or 3 subway from there to save some steps, but if you're just looking to land in the general area, you probably want to aim for the most efficient route to NY Penn.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

As a fellow jersey guy, i can say Gobble Gobble has listed great intel. I would suggest flying into Newark before JFK unless the price is way better at JFK. Real easy to get to midtown via the trains from Newark.

Food and bars: too many of every type of genre to choose from....whatever you want in any price range you can find if you do a little research. Ive always liked Heartland Brewery. I think theres 2 locations....one near times square and one up on 52nd or so nearer to Rockefeller center.

Other stuff to do i havent seen mentioned-

If you're staying in the midtown area the subway is a great way to get to the stadium. But figure out which train to take, there's an express and a local. Pretty sure your only options are the D train and the 4 train. If you get the local you'll be on it for 45+ getting back to your hotel.

Yeah, 4/D are the safe options. The B train also runs to Yankee stadium but only runs express during weekday rush hour, which the game will be ending at.

(Edit: Specifically an option only for heading back.) Could be an option to hop the B train at 161st/Yankee Stadium and then get off at 47th-50th, Rockefeller Center or 42nd St Bryant Park

Local - makes every stop along the way

Express - only stops at major stations (essentially), much quicker if you're close to one of these stations

Hopefully I'm not insulting your intelligence here but I had to learn the hard way about the differences and availability of both in NYC. The train system there isn't immediately intuitive.

Honestly Google Maps is your friend. Put in where you want to go, switch it to public transit, it'll tell you the exact combination of trains you need to catch to get there. That includes choosing correctly between express/local, factoring in scheduling and track downtime, and including bus options in the case that you can't get their by train alone (all buses use the same metro card as trains, super simple).

It's been my go-to in pretty much every major city I've been to worldwide that had public transportation, and it's worked great in pretty much all of them (heck, in Tokyo it would give you walking directions inside the larger stations if you had to transfer to a different platform).

If trains are too confusing and if you are bringing any kids with their own luggage, taxi wouldn't terrible to get to manhattan. I believe it's flat rate between $50 and $60 to anywhere in Manhattan.

Thanks for linking that app.

For real though, hit the American Museum of Natural History. It's got stuff that can't be seen anywhere else on Earth.

Also, my $0.02 as a former hosedragger: I would think about either adding a day for the 9/11 Memorial or doing it on a separate trip. It's heavy, and might stick with you through the rest of what is supposed to be a fun trip.

And to further share my frustration with not living around VT and needing to order online... Fanatics doesn't have any merch regarding our bowl game. Neither does Campus Emporium. New Era, the sponsor of the Pinstripe Bowl, as of Wednesday, had a link for Pinstripe Bowl Apparel on their site, which is now removed today.

We absolutely suck at marketing ourselves online. This has to be changed going forward.

Honestly, I was just looking for a new NewEra hat, which I figured would be easy with this game given the sponsor. Nope.

Its just a furthering of the absolute miserable job we do of branding and marketing ourselves online. It shouldn't be that hard to get the same Nike branded jackets and polos that the coaches wear during the season, and yet its been impossible this year. You're pissing away revenue streams by doing this.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

It wasn't always this way. Moved to NY in 1990. Getting Tech apparel became a challenge - not going to find it locally. When the internet rolled around, the original online source for this stuff (late 90's early 2000's) was department stores. JCPenney, Sears, etc. No Fanatics to dominate the market. These department stores carried a limited amount of NCAA merchandise - generally 20-30 teams. You weren't going to find anything for something like a South Dakota State. You mainly found what are now considered Power 5 schools, but not all of them. And it always seemed like VT made the cut to have licensed apparel available . I always figured that VT fans must buy a lot - because we always made the cut.

The market changed - the power of the internet to sell niche stuff was recognized, and dedicated sources for sports apparel surfaced. The traditional sources dropped the lines, and just about every school had apparel available nationwide. Combine that with VT football going through a rough patch, and we now are a second tier school in the minds of the dedicated web retailers.

Amen 100 times. 100 times. We have a fraction of the gear as peer schools typically.

I just want a maroon Nike polo that pint all wierd, I used to have one, but not any more.

If we hit the end of the first quarter and all we've seen is Blumrick running 30 times, and maybe toss 1 or 2 passes, I'll probably tune out

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Hopefully this is coach speak and he'll play more

Did anyone else catch the secret message in Niziolek's tweet? The extra ")" obviously means something special is going to happen.

"Vick, dashing back . . . here he comes again . . . Electrifying . . . and have you ever seen anything like this?"

I think people who want to see Tajh are in for a rude awakening if he plays more than a series or two.

(Then again it would be a real Fuente move to keep a good player on the bench when you had every opportunity to play him. I just don't think he's ready though.)

Cornelsen is still running the offense. We can't forget that.

I'll be surprised to see much of Tajh at all. If he does play, I would not be shocked if he played pretty well. I also wouldn't be surprised to see him play poorly. He hasn't had good coaching. He might be tremendously talented but we won't know much about his ability or potential because he's been severely handicapped by poor coaching. I wouldn't read much of anything into his talent or potential based on the likely limited snaps he'll get against MD.

Onward and upward

The only way we see Tahj is if Blumrick gets on a roll and Corny need to slow us down. Or maybe if we get a 3rd and 30 from our own 8 and we want to try to surprise with predictable wide receiver screen by using a cold QB. S/

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

I want to see Tajh, but I'm expecting a first-time-QP-esk performance.

Then again, if he is allowed to and capable of making a read, he could be our best QB this season.

QB is mind-numbing for me. It's not about the kid, but the fact we recruited a team after QB who isn't a qB is ridiculous and the fact he has seen this much action is even more disheartening.

I hope Pry finds a couple of QBs in the portal who want to compete for the job who are not in the same class and Blumrick is told he is going to play a slash role - TE. How do you play a college QB who can't throw a college level out route? I'm ready for this year to be over

You think it's a coincidence that Fuente has not been named to another job yet?

Onward and upward

It honestly would not surprise me one bit if Fu just totally retires from coaching.

It's possible IMO, but that would totally surprise me.

I don't expect him to land a P5 coaching job this year but I believe he will get chances to be a head coach again. He is relatively young and coaches who have done far worse than he did here have resurrected their careers.

I will be interested to see where he ends up. He represented the O&M well while he was here and I will be rooting for him.

To quote the Brothers Osborne: "I'm Good For Some But I'm Not For Everyone"

My point was not Fu bashing, but I guess I lead that down the wrong path. My point is the uphill climb the staff and program has at QB1,2,3 as it might take several years with that room. We have zero serviceable options right now. I was disappointed we didn't take 1 QB transfer last year (blumrick does not count) and will be disappointed if we don't take 2 this year.

For the record - I actually think you are wrong on FU and bet he lands a good D1 job at some point in the next couple of years. He has a lot of things in his favor and especially in the Texas - Midwest markets he has a lot of respect. Just didn't work here as has been well documented

We are in agreement not disagreement on FU going forward in coaching. My comment was that I did not think he will land a Power 5 Head Coaching job this year. I believe he will almost certainly be a head coach again within a year or two and possibly this year.

To quote the Brothers Osborne: "I'm Good For Some But I'm Not For Everyone"

Honestly? Fuente seems like a prime candidate for the Nick Saban Coaching Rehabilitation School... I would not be surprised in the slightest if he lands in an analyst role at Alabama next year.

Fuente is still widely considered to be an excellent X's and O's guy, and Alabama has cycled those types of guys in and out on a pretty frequent basis in between coaching stops. If I were Fuente I'd be asking around for Saban's number to see if he wants any backroom help.

He doesn't have to dig too far deep as Wiggins is already on staff

I think Fuente is a decent offensive mind and I'm sure he has lots of respect and connections in the industry. However, I think he really let Cornelsen do considerable damage to his reputation. I also think that he will coach again. What I'm very curious about is whether he coaches with Cornelsen again and if so how it looks.

Fuente was considered a qb whisperer when he took the VT job. Since then, qb has been a complete failure at VT. That's not going to help him out. The point of my post was that he allowed his reputation as a qb guru to be totally sullied in his time here. Not going to be a quick recovery. And the reason very well could be because he has no idea what he's doing. Lots of coaches have done worse and gotten jobs again. But even though they did worse on the field, they usually have a redeeming quality that helps them get another job. They recruit well, or they have at least one position that is consistently good. Under Fuente we didn't recruit well, never had any good WRs, or TEs, or, perhaps most importantly, any good qbs. What does he have to sell? "A well thought of offense that is difficult to prepare for"?

Onward and upward

Fuente may well be a decent coach, but at VT he started off on the wrong foot, and could never catch his balance. His recruiting was actually pretty decent. But he let some players go when he shouldn't have, and he really couldn't afford to do that. If he'd had UVa's QBs, (or maybe some of the better ones he had at VT and let go) he'd still be the coach at VT. About the time he had some capability on offense, the defense sucked rocks, and vice versa. It just never came together.

And the main job of a head coach is to make it all come together and result in wins.

I feel like Tahj sees the field one way or the other. Even if it isn't the game plan, with as much as Blumrick got ran against Miami (20 carries & 11 passes in one half of action), I think there's a high probability he gets dinged up and Tahj has to come in at least for a series.

I'm feeling this is going to be like the Insight Bowl where we had everyone throwing to everyone. Vick to DeAngelo Hall, Randall to Vick, DeAngelo doing it by his damn self, and so on...

Agreed, after the uva game I think we all know Blumrick is not ready. I would rather see Bullock get more time, assess what we have there. The game is practically in his backyard, so he should be fired up and ready.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Does anyone know where the MV's will be sitting? Wanted to get seats nearby.

At what point does it make sense to list the people who will actually be playing? It feels like we will barely field a team at this point.

Hodge or Wright come in to replace Lofton at WR
Harvey or Chatman replace Murray and Thompson at CB

Neither Kendricks nor Griffin are in the 2-deep.

Kendricks and Griffin aren't in the two deep???

Not in the one posted above in the comments

I love NYC. I'll never live there again but I will visit. And you can absolutely write off a whole borough. It's called Staten Island and unless you like garbage dumps or you are an Irish girl looking to marry an italian mama's boy, you can absolutely write it off.

I recommend watching this video for tips.

Not sure where to put this but this will work, Brad Cornelson isn't in the bowl game team picture posted to twitter, while the rest of the current staff is

He said give to me Roscoe

Maybe they asked him to take the picture?

Deposit whiskey, receive wisdom.

Good thing it was a predetermined read on where to angle the camera

Looks a lot like him, but that sure is the beard of a man that doesn't want to be found after all this. Like he's about to start a new life up in logging country.

"Exit light..."

That beard is silky

I...really hate how good that Beard is

Paging Joe, I think a change of username is coming.

Yes, I'm sure he'd be happy to do that for you.

I maintain that every male who is capable of growing facial hair (without patches) looks better with facial hair.

That just reminded me, somewhere I read a quote about JEB Stuart that said he was the only man a beard ever helped. Apparently Stuart had no chin.

As a bearded person, I'm going to disagree with the quote (I have the opposite problem. I have chins being covered by a beard). But, I found it entertaining.

He must really like watching Ted Lasso

I mean, Who doesn't like watching Ted lasso???

Me.

But then again, I haven't seen Ted Lasso.

It is on my to watch list, but that's about six years long

You should prioritize it.

There gonna be a game thread? If one is theoretically trying to watch the game from their work CPU, can it be streamed from espn.com?

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Yeah you'll have to log into your service provider but ESPN streams live on https://www.espn.com/watch/ so as long as that site and the loging for your service provider isn't blocked you should be good to go.

Maybe Joe already headed out? Unless there's a scheduled thread.
