After 2 years of waiting and plenty of good options to choose from Dan Snyder has finally unveiled the new name of the franchise as........... *drumroll*
Oh, the Washington Commanders....
One legacy. One unified future. We are the Washington Commanders #TakeCommand pic.twitter.com/Eav9NOV5Mm— Washington Commanders (@Commanders) February 2, 2022
To be fair, in typical Washington style, they managed to screw this up with unblurred footage they gave NBC a few weeks ago....
If the name does end up being Washington Commanders, it would only be fitting that they botched the secret by giving NBC Washington unblurred footage. pic.twitter.com/Ho3TeRliGr— Paul Conner (@P_ConnerJr) January 27, 2022
And by unveiling banners in the brightly lit stadium last night

I'm so accustomed to the disappointment. I was hoping it would be RedTails or RedWolves. Dan Snyder is a thief of joy.
did you not see the concept art for those? They were actually good, and Snyder can't have anyone actually upstaging him like that
Well he needs everyone to buy new merchandise and the R is too similar.
I can't be the only one who thinks they stuck a New Era sticker on the back of it, right?
The Sweat Commanders.
via GIPHY
Two helmets? That's interesting
The changed the rules to allow alternate helmets for every team starting next season.
https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-approves-alternate-helmets-beginning-in-2022
Are you telling me that I will actually get those sweet, sweet early 1990s Eagles uniforms back next year?
https://www.inquirer.com/eagles/nfl-alternate-helmets-throwback-uniforms-eagles-kelly-green-20210625.html
Who I thought of when I seen the black helmet:
Wario is not amused by this, you'll be hearing from his lawyers...🤣
Another pic of the uniforms
Is the mannequin doing the robot?
They look like Arizona State unis except not as good
Agreed. ASU consistently has great unis. Not a Redskins/WFT/Commanders fan at all, so the name doesn't really do anything for me one way or the other. However the new unis are hideous. IMO, the Washington unis peaked late 60's with this combo:
Boring
via GIPHY
Yeah sorry about that I bumped as the action started so it was just a blank wall for 2 hours.
That's 1:55 longer than any of mine
I cant help but feel like they look like a CFL team now
Now??!!!!
Oh, you mean the uniforms...
Not gonna lie, I dig the black uni.
It's the best one but the others are so bad that I really don't know what to compare it to. Also the W on the front of the helmet is laughably awful IMO
Probably because it looks less like Washington and more similar to the uniform of a different (better) NFL football team?
I think I just like black alternate uniforms in general.
This was my first take too...introducing your Washington Commanders/Steelers/Falcons....yeehaw for brand identity and all that crap. In typical Washington fashion they have crapped the bed again.
Not a WFT fan, but I loved the Red Wolves idea.
Howl at the Moon after a TD!
As a lifelong fan of the Redskins/WTF...
Haha, Washington gonna WashIngton
They honestly should have just stayed as the WFT vs this. It just feels lazy, especially with the Indians becoming the Guardians a few months ago. Just no personality to the name.
Amazing how Snyder just seems to always make the wrong call.
Big downgrade from Football Team imo
I mean guys it could have been real dumb. Commanders is alright.
Most teams nicknames are already 2 or less syllables and if not are able to be shortened. Can't really do that with the Commanders. It just seems too long to say every time and it's not like Washington is short either.
Oh I mean you could shorten it with a nickname....
Unfortunately, the two obvious ones are either the Commies or Durrs
Given how they play, expect the latter.
How did no one over the course of 2 years not realize people would nickname them the Commies? And by people I mean me.
So instead of the annual Cowboys vs Indians games, now we can have Patriots vs Commies?
My brother brought up the point that people could already call them the foreskins and deadskins, so...there will always be ways to alter names.
At least they didn't go with Red Tails, where you wouldn't even have to alter the name.
Red Tails had my vote. Interesting point of order, the last graduate of the Tuskegee Airmen program lives a couple minutes from Commanders Park.
Football Team was unique.
Commanders doesn't really inspire or have any connection to the area. At least with Admirals there would have been some connection to the Navy Yard.
Football team wasn't unique, it was stupid. I'm glad we have a mascot now. How do you figure that Commander doesn't have connection to DC? It certainly wasn't my favorite or even top 3 probably but it's so much better than Football Team.
Ron Rivera can start calling himself the Commander-in-Chief. That is, if Dan Snyder doesn't beat him to it.
"Football Team" had a real existential overtone to it, and people are underrating this left and right
Football Team had a sense of humor.
Commanders doesn't get it.
too many Syllables...what would the short name be? Commies?
Buccaneers = Bucs
Patriots = Pats
Maybe Comms?
Commanders = Durrrrrrrs
The Washington Commies it is!
I genuinely am not sure they could have gone more generic with these logos. The most stylized one looks like they drew inspiration from the stickers on the New Era caps in their own team store
EDIT i stand corrected
That's not a Commanders hat. It's just to show the 39 Thirty logo.
this just makes me even more glad that I'm not a Washington fan. LOL. Dan Snyder is a schmuck
So the logo is really not changing and nothing new just a new line is all. What a shit name change and a lazy attempt. Cant wait to listen to grant and danny this afternoon have a meltdown over the lame attempt.
What frustrates me more than the name "Commanders" is that it took them two years to come up with this bs. Moreover, they have been pressurized to change the name of the team since the early 2010s. So anyone with the slightest competency would plan for the name change. Take Cleaveland Indians for example, they didn't come up with the plan to change the team name in just a month. They probably had planned it before even making the decision. I feel like I would have been more accepting of the name if they had announced this back in 2019.
But who am I kidding? This whole process just shows how incompetent the front office is, and it's not like people didn't know this already.
I can't wait for Snyder to lose ownership so we can have good things again.
I don't have any dog in this fight, but... this is what happens when people buy up all the good names. 😄
Those black jerseys are some CFL looking bullshit
I'm sorry to all of you Washington fans out there. Someday you will have something nice...maybe.
They've had Ovi for going on 20 years now. They're fine
They already have 2 more super bowl wins than my Vikings. They've had their time.
Wrong SB years, leaks all over the place, literally had Joe Theismann ruining the surprise on TV the day before, colors aren't right.
Commanders is...fine...but the unis are hot garbage.
It's almost like Snyder hired the cheapest firm he could find.
It's all trash, just as we should have expected.
I cannot express how frustrating it is to have your favorite childhood team completely ruined and turned into a complete laughingstock on and off the field.
I'm not a big NFL fan, so I don't really have any stake in the choice but this seems... uninspired.
I don't hate it, I don't love it, I barely even register it. It is so bland.
bunch of Commies in the nation's capital!! *Shakes fist*
Guys, look at the plus side. It will sound great in Spanish broadcasts:
Ahora tenemos al Mariscal de Campo, Taylor Heinicke de los COMANDANTES DE WASHINGTON pasando el ovoide al receptor cerrado, Logan Thomas!! Anotación de 6 puntos para los COMANDANTES!
Hmmm, yea, no... Still sucks.
Oh come on its not that bad
......
Yikes
ooph...that was...sorta sad, honestly
Its rare you get the merging of the forced exuberance of the fan of a brand new expansion franchise with being a fan of a team that has literally existed in the same city/metro for 85 years.
I mean, it's not bad, it's not amazing or special. Clearly lazy, but when you spent millions on legal fees for other shit over the past I dunno, since ownership of the team, you gotta cut costs somewhere. 🤷🏽♂️
I dont think it was lazy - i think they put some serious effort into it BECAUSE of all the issues surrounding the team and the historical name, and this was the safest choice to avoid blow-back. I think the uni choices aren't terrific, but they aren't bad either, and also are helping put distance between the franchise and the legacy name/image.
I'm not seeing it as a huge improvement over Washington Football Team, to be honest.
But at least the non-fan protesters have to find something else to whine about.
Hail to the C'manders, Hail vic-to-ry
Commanders on the warpath
Fight, for old, PC.
Hmmm.
They've done their absolute best to become joy-neutral. Should have just called them the Fighting Snyders, or maybe the JoyKillers.
And I'll add that I was a season ticket holder for 10 years, after being on the waiting list for about 5 years, back when that was a thing.
Reading this comment, I was waiting for the /s that never came. It's easy to chirp about "non-fan protesters" and political correctness when you weren't the target of the racism (don't know this for sure, but I'm guessing it's the case).
Commanders is a stupid name and the re-brand sucks but almost anything would have been better than the old name. Good riddance.
Any further discussion of the topic you want to discuss would be better held in a different forum.
Hey man, you tossed the first grenade, not me. But fair enough.
If you research the topic, you'll understand what I meant.
Still waiting for them to release the actual name and jerseys. I'm confident this is like a PR 'gotcha' joke to draw attention.
I was a lifelong diehard fan until I broke up with them in 2015. I still have a few bits of Skins memorabilia but gave away most of it, including signed items from Super Bowl winning teams.
I haven't watched a game in years and you'd have to pay me a lot of money to attend one, but I figured if the team came up with a cool name, I'd buy a hat. Nope.
This was the easiest layup ever to win back some of the fanbase. Call the team the Redhogs. They still get to keep the hashtag #httr, same color scheme and just do a badass new logo. Hogs for short, it harkens back to the glory days, and all of us old die hards could sing Hail to the Redhogs. It was so easy. But everything Dan Snyder touches turns to dust. He is a terrible human being.
What a boring, shit name. Hoping no Hokies ever have to play for them.
I got bad news for you
Dan Snyder sucks.
I'm a Titans fan (TITAN UP!) so I don't really care either way, but LMAO this is bad. The name in itself is just ok but when you add it together with the font, the colors, the jerseys, the fact that you can call them the Commies, this just one giant own goal. There's like a 100 fan generated designs that are so much better yet they paid millions to a firm to come up with this.
I would say this has to be the most encouraging piece of news of the day for Commanders fans: https://www.hogshaven.com/2022/2/2/22914249/washington-d-c-mayor-muriel-...
Stuff like this obviously has a lot of moving pieces, but getting a stadium back in the district would solve at least one of the franchise's many problems. In addition to being a giant dump, Fedex field is such a pain to get to for the majority of the fanbase.
as a recovering ex-washington supporter. There is one singular reason why that team is trash and it will continue to be that way until that 'reason' is gone. Any other owner would have acted with expediency and intelligence in rebranding, rebuilding, and winning years ago. Instead, FedEx is still a thing and now the Washington Commanders have three unique uniforms that have literally nothing in common except for the nike swoosh and the helmet. This is a nightmare that just has no ending...but hey, they could be in DC again so that's....something...
yeah there's obviously bigger problems - the stadium would cure but one symptom of the disease that is Dan Snyder.
Just thought it was one small reason for optimism since the overall name reveal seems to be going over like a lead balloon
White jerseys = Washington Seminoles
how 'bout dem 'Manders?
More like commies, amirite?
How did this happen? When all else fails, you are supposed to name your team after a bird!
or a cat
Condors might have been cool
though Turkeys would have been more fitting
Their head quarters still says Washington Football Team so they cant even do a correct roll out of the new name.
They really screwed up this roll out.
I figured I'd be getting a bunch of alerts last night or this morning to tell me to tune in for the reveal. Nothing.
Then, when it finally happens, the NFL app dings, but it takes so long to load the story that my screen goes dark. I scroll through Facebook and Twitter, but can't find much other than what the local Richmond media was putting out (and those types of articles aren't worth the digital ink they're not printed with.)
Finally, I make my way to the team app (It was the Redskins app when I downloaded it, then became WFT, I guess now it's the Commanders app), and they have one story. I read the story, with three paragraphs explaining why and how they designed the logo (remember all that BS about what the curve in the new VT means? Yeah, that kind of crap), and yet there's not a single picture of the logo. The only image was the banner at the top with the three uniforms, and that was cropped.
But yeah...two years for this?
Meh
Hell, even the Washington Snyders sounds more like a real thing than the Commanders
Also, with FedEx being near Hanover Maryland, they could have almost been the Washington Snyder's of Hanover
As a lifelong fan, I don't really mind the new name. "WFT" was just starting to grow on me, as boring as it was. "Commanders" isn't very unique or exciting but at least it isn't associated to anything that could offend anyone haha. And other than the W on the helmet I think the black uniforms look pretty sick (I guess they're the alternates). The other unis aren't bad either.
At this point though, I care much more about our team's performance and getting some wins rather than whatever the heck our team name and mascot are lol.
If they win, no one is going to care what the name is
Until Dan Snyder is dead, this team will not win. It's not possible
Hey remember that leaked image in the OP? Yeah, apparently the logo is slightly different than what was announced yesterday. How different?
The Washington Commies aka "The People's Team"
People's Team, the Commies, red uniforms....
Really leaning into this one aren't they
So they removed the super bowl years and championship years from the logo. What's kinda funny is they used the calendar year the Super Bowl was played in and not the season year or the super bowl Roman numeral like how everyone else references Super Bowls.
I saw someone refer to this as a Comm Rag, and now I can't call it anything else.
The Washington Comm Rags
This has been making the rounds and it entertains me.
This is probably my favorite one. Even my wife got it and thought it was funny.
There was a helmet graphic that someone did that had Cobra Commander on it. Actually looked pretty cool.
Still think they missed the boat by not calling them the "Swamp Things"
Aaron McFarling of the Roanoke Times is a big fan of the change. https://roanoke.com/sports/football/professional/mcfarling-a-bush-league...
I was a huge Redskins fan growing up. As a kid when Theismann broke his leg I wrote him a letter. Loved watching Riggins, Art Monk and Darrell Green. The list goes on and on. Part of the reason I liked them was the name Redskins. I guess some people can take it as derogatory but for me it was respect of the Native Americans and all the things that I loved to study about them in history. It combined football and that together for me. I have to wonder if erasing them from sports nicknames is actually contributing to erasing their legacy from society and history. I quit following the Skins closely back in the early 2000s. Now that they have changed their name, I hope they never win another game.
You consider the old name a sign of respect; Native American rights organizations consider it a racial slur. Slight difference of opinion I guess.
Danny going to have to change the name again to distract from the latest scandals.
I think I am going to be looking for a new NFL team to root for. Football Team was a better name then Commanders.
Perhaps they should have read some old TMQ articles in the archive and named themselves the Potomac Drainage Basin Indigenous Persons." I wish all Hokies on the team godspeed in getting to a franchise that is not utter garbage. Perhaps if Snyder is ever finally forced out I will return.
I'm honestly not getting all the negativity on the new name and uniforms. They were in a tough spot with the name and everyone was going to over analyze everything about it. Its not great, but its not horrible. As for the unis - they good, and I think the road whites look great. Besides, after some of the hideous VT uniform combos we've seen over the last 10 years I would think we have quite the tolerance for bad kits.
In spite of the bland name, the uniforms are decent.
I'm honestly not getting all the negativity on the new name and uniforms. They were in a tough spot with the name and everyone was going to over analyze everything about it. Its not great, but its not horrible.
It is horrible. The whole process of it was horrible. The leaks, the lack of excitement about the announcement, the way it was done on the Today show. Everything about this team is horrible down to the owner, the team performance, the stadium, sexual abuse, all of it. There was a chance there for the team to get the fan base just a little bit excited. Lots of people wanted the Red Wolves. Their excuse was BS. Redtails would have worked. Red Hogs was so easy to do, leave the jersey's the same and just change the logo. It's not possible to be offended at those options. But Commanders? It's flat out freaking BORING. The ineptitude continues. The entire ownership situation and everything about the team is downright horrible.
Shorten the name to C-men.
Approved.
Man, being a Giants fan has been tough the last couple of years, but it still isn't as bad as being a Commies fan.
Been a long time WFT fan, I was in high school last time we mattered.
Seems to me the name would be more fitting, if indeed we had at least been relevant sometime this century.
And so Dan Snyder completes his total annihilation of my beloved Redskins. Glad my father (fan from the 1950's onwards) didn't live to see this sad, pathetic day. Going with Redtails or Redhogs would have honored the past great teams while satisfying the culture warriors calling for change. Nope, nothing but bland, uninspired corporate banality. Thanks Danny boy, I will continue to ignore Sunday football while cherishing Sunday afternoon memories of my dad and I enjoying fresh popcorn, Snyders pretzels, cold Coke and competitive football through the 70's, 80's and early 90's.
I second this. Dan snyder has done nothing but regress everything Jack Kent Cooke built and has dishonored the fanbase with this shenanigan. Long live the memories of JKC, Joe Gibbs, George Allen, RFK stadium and all the great players that took the field for Washington.
Mr. Snyder, you can eat shit straight from the bung!
This likely violates the politics rule so delete it or whatever, but the bill to subsidize the new Commies stadium in VA cleared its first hurdle to get to a full vote. Contact you reps and make sure it never actually passes. VA taxpayers shouldn't have to give Dan Snyder a dime. Make that asshole pay out of pocket
I do this a lot, I dont want to pay for a stadium that I'll never use, and has shown it does actually help local businesses.
Is there a place to figure out who you should reach out to? I would also like to actually send something saying keep that mess out of our Commonwealth unless Snyder pays for the stadium in full.
Find your delegate and state senator's office contact information via the web. From knowing staffers and such over the years, the best thing to do is call. Emails tend to get discarded or never read. Calls are logged and such. And if they end up getting numerous calls from motivated groups, it tends to get their attention quicker. You might get attention if you email or write since its a state official and more local (feds almost always ignore everything but a shit ton of calls) but calls tend to work better from what I've learned over the years.
In two to three years, this will matter as much as it actually matters now....not at all. Just root on your Commanders and direct that misplaced energy (excl. that directed to awful ownership) somewhere useful.
You are correct because my love of the Redskins turned to straight apathy and I couldn't care less about them any longer. Nor will I in two-three years. Sundays are made for fishing now.
If they could actually be successful this wouldnt be as much of an issue but the piss poor on the field and then the shambles they are off it with constant allegations and investigations I'd argue it will probably take alot of people far longer to get over this. Hell the president of ops Jason wright literally blamed the fans for thinking this name rebrand wasnt good enough. I'm glad I'm not a fan of them but I feel for the fans who get treated like absolute shit by the ownership.
Did they hire the same firm that we used to redesign the academic logo?
Thanks for reminding us that it could have been even worse...
