I was expecting to see Cole Beck on your list with all the success he had this year. Did he not qualify for the championships?

He did not unfortunately. Qualifying is based on fastest time throughout the season and he barely missed out of the top 16 of the 200m and the 60m.

Vroom Vroom

Beck is excellent in the 60m and 200m, but his sweet spot is the 100m. Look for him to have a very good outdoor season.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

After the first four events of the heptathlon, Spotswood is in 15th with 3070 points. Hopefully he can claw back some points tomorrow.

The leader, Kyle Garland from Georgia, had an epic battle with Asani Hylton from Stephen F. Austin in the high jump.

What should we expect here, doesn't seem like we have enough athletes qualified to place as a team. Is this purely individual for the good guys?

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Basically cheering on the individuals. Definitely not many point opportunities on the mens side. I don't have a great feel for how the women will shake out because I didn't do a deep dive on how many athletes came from each school outside of the ACC. My WAG would be the ladies finish somewhere between 10th and 15th.

Incidentally the Duke women are in the lead at the moment with 10 points after Erin Marsh took 2nd in the women's pentathlon. That was the only women's event they are represented in so that won't hold up as we get into the evening.

Alexios Prodanas finishes 16th in the weight throw with 20.35 meters which makes him a 2nd Team All-American.

As a side note, the folks doing live updates on NCAA's site don't evidently realize that the men's heptathlon has seven events over two days, not 4 events over 1 day. They have already crowned current leader, Kyle Garland of Georgia champion. Oops. Wonder how long it will take before they fix that.

Lindsey Butler wins her heat in the 800 m and is on to tomorrow's final.

And wasn't even a season best for her. Second best qualifying time and seems like she might have some more in the tank.

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.

Rebecca Mammel finishes 7th in the Weight Throw with a throw of 22.73 m securing 2 team points for the VT ladies. Sara Killinen finishes in 15th with a throw of 18.73 m.

Shey Taiwo from Ole Miss won the event with a throw of 25.55m which sets a new facility record but just misses out on tying the collegiate record of 25.56 set in 2007 by a centimeter.

Mammel becomes a first team All-American and Killinen becomes a second team All-American.

Pole Vault Update since ESPN doesn't want to show any of it. Both Hokies are in the top six with 10 members of the field already out so team points are guaranteed. Current height is 4.41 meters or 14'-5 1/2".

Down to four with both Hokies still in it. Now attempting 4.51 meters or 14'-9 1/2". Julia struggled at 4.46 meters but pulled it out on her last attempt. Rachel is doing her thing.

RACHEL BAXTER!!! YOUR 2022 POLE VAULT NATIONAL CHAMPION!

She did not miss an attempt until the rest of the field was already out and set a new PR at 15'-1 3/4".

Julia Fixsen finishes third.

Tough break for the VT DMR ladies. During the first hand-off the NC State runner competing her 1200 meters didn't get off track after the handoff and tangled with the VT handoff leading to a fall. Notre Dame appeared to get tangled up in that as well. NC State was ultimately DQ'd but you can't really come back from a fall and the Hokies finished in 10th.

That's it for Day 1.

The women are currently tied for 3rd in the team standings with 18 points with 6 out of 17 events complete. Opportunity for additional points in the 800 m and the Triple Jump tomorrow.

The men don't have any team points yet, but still have the 3000m and the Triple Jump to get on the board. I suspect team points in the heptathlon are out of reach, but we will see how Spotswood does in the remaining three events.

Men's events are complete with Texas winning the team championship with 47 points, NC A&T in 2nd and Tennessee in 3rd.

Jacob Spotswood took 11th in the heptathlon and had a hell of a day in the pole vault equaling his season's best. His finish makes him a 2nd team All-American.

Chauncey Chambers finished 15th with a jump of 15.13 meters making him a 2nd Team All-American.

Antonio Lopez Segura finished 6th in the 3000m and secures the only team points for the men's side as well as making him a 1st Team All-American.

The men finished tied for 47th with 3 points.

Finishing Order Amongst ACC Schools:
1. T-13th Place - FSU - 17 (win in the 60m hurdles, 7th in 60m, 4th in 5000m)

NATIONAL CHAMPION X 2! Lindsey Butler takes the win in the 800m!

Victoria Gorlova gets the ladies a point with her 8th place finish in the Triple Jump. Not totally sure what happened to her because she completed her first jump and did not complete any of the remaining five jumps. I'm going to assume an injury of some sort, but couldn't find any updates. Her one and only jump was enough to hold on for 8th place which gets the ladies a team point and makes Victoria a 1st Team All-American.

That's a wrap from Alabama.

The ladies finish tied for 6th with 29 points.

Finishing Order Amongst ACC Schools
