Getting the 11 seed means we would not have made it in without beating Duke.
I think Purdue in the following round is a really bad match up for us, but who knows. I've only watched a few minutes of Texas all year- I think we have a pretty good shot, especially with how we've been playing lately.

Texas is a decent team, but if VT can score/play well on offense we will win. In terms of Purdue, I think Young puts Mutts on the 7'7 goon an lives with him scoring a few hook shots. I think we put Keve on Williams, and Catoor on Ivey.. so we will need offense from Alleyne and Maddox vs. Purdue. Either way, very tough matchup and our penalty for losing to a shit Xavier squad, Fucking Brownell, and fucking BC. Those debts had to come sooner or later, so we get a huge purdue squad in round 2..

Getting the 11 seed means we would not have made it in without beating Duke.
I know it's a moot point, but I don't understand how we were this close to not dancing, despite winning 20+ games in a top 5 basketball conference, beating every ACC team to make the big dance, and being on a hot streak.
I haven't watched much basketball this year, so maybe I'm just ignorant, but this makes no sense to me.

Simple. We are not smart enough to schedule like St. Mary's and Wyoming do. Imagine if we played Duke 3 times, and the rest of the schedule was with teams 50-150 in the net? That's what St. Mary's does. They don't beat Gonzaga, and they don't play any plus 250 teams. So you beat a top 50 net san fran- which is another joke- on the road and thats a quad 1 win. You beat 49th BYU on the road and its a Q1 win. Our issue is that the ACC was down in terms of advanced metrics, so beating anyone but Duke really didn't help us once we lost to Dayton and Xavier. Had we won those 2 games, we would have been a 7 seed. The A 10 was brilliant at gaming the system like this a few years ago.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
This makes no sense. Looking at St. Mary's schedule, their best win is ND? Who we also beat (twice?). How the fuck are they a 5 seed? Do they have no 'bad' losses where we do?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
St Mary's doesn't have a loss outside Quadrant 1 - so no bad losses. All seven of their losses are quad 1. As stated, the BC and NC State games cost VT dearly. They were 4-7 against quad 1, and in addition, 14 of their wins were from quad 3 and 4, with zero losses. Their NET ranking is 19, their strength of schedule is 56 in the nation, with a non-conference of 72. They beat Gonzaga - the consensus #1 team.
VT has 2 quad 3 losses. 3-5 against quadrant 1, with 14 wins against quad 3 and 4, but again those two quad 3 losses. VT net ranking of 27,strength of schedule was a 71, with a 134 non-conference.
St Mary's played a tougher schedule, with zero bad losses. Its not so much that they got a 5, its that we got an 11.
ETA: ST Mary's played the #1 NET team 3 times, #22 twice, #24, #25 and #28. That's 8 games against the top 30. VT's only games against top 30 were Duke twice - at #12.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Its not the wins over nobodies, its the losses to the nobodies. VT has two of those - St Mary's has none.
And St. Mary's won three of those games against the Top 30 - including against the #1.
They had a net ranking of 19 for the season, VT, 27. St Mary's deserved to be seeded where they are. Its not an issue with their seed, its an issue with the VT seed.

Yeah that's why the computers like us so much because it takes that into account. BPI and kenpom both heavily factor in mov and NET heavily factors in efficiency which is closely related to mov.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
If Gonzaga ever has a down year- meaning not a top 5 team, that is a one bid league. This has been proven. My point is that St. Mary's gets 3 cracks at great losses, which doesn't hurt, and they don't play the VMIs etc. So if Gonzaga is great, they can pick up some mediocre wins, no bad losses, they get in.

Dome regionals were done because the NCAA required cities who wanted to host the Final Four to show they could stage a game in a dome prior to receiving a Final Four. They've dropped that requirement, so no more dome regionals.

Man we would not have even been close if it weren't for the win last night. Crazy. So unfair that the #15 and #23 on KenPom play each other in the 1st round as a 6/11 game
Let's get it done. Tough game against a high caliber coach

This committee clearly ignored the conference tournaments, unless you were win and get in- like VT and Richmond. Outside of that, they ignored the conference tourney. So VT's resume stopped at the regular season, so yes we would have been out. Which would have sucked, because we beat ND twice, but they would have been in and not us. aTm very similar- they had a rough stretch like we did earlier in the year, and they are out. Indiana beat Michigan and have to play a play in game... they stopped ranking march 1st pretty much. Wyoming and SF in are total jokes. Both lost in their conference tourney's early. Joke.

Once the committee scraped the RPI (thank god), it seems to me the most important thing for the P5 conference teams to do is win a couple quality non con games. Last year we beat Villanova for example. Michigan had some good non con wins, and then treaded water in a very tough league. If VT won 11 games 2 years ago in the ACC we would have been a 6 seed. Dayton and Xavier killed our resume this year. That's why we are an 11

PF: Mutts if he returns or N'Guessan
C: combination of Wessler, Ojiako, and Kidd. We don't really have a true proven big once Aluma leaves.
N'Guessan has more experience but is too small to play the 5 unless he can somehow add like 20-30 pounds this offseason lol. Also Alleyne gets a lot of minutes and I'd expect Rodney Rice to get good minutes too. Haynes has good size for PF or maybe even an undersized center, but we will have to see how he develops this offseason.

All of Middleton will likely be there for Storm, about an hour and 20 minute drive without traffic to FiServ. I was supposed to have moved to Chicago by now, and this is incredibly frustrating that I haven't, cuz I would have been there 100%, staying with my brother in MKE and getting wild on 3rd St.
Anybody need guidance to Milwaukee (MKE) hmu!

Man, Texas really got screwed! They get a 6-seed but draw one or the hottest teams in the nation who just proved they have the system, depth and mettle to battle anyone.
Two great coaches. Strength vs strength (our offense vs their defense). However, barring several of our shooters going cold, I honestly don't see this one being all that close. They are significantly undersized in the paint. I think Aluma and Mutts are gonna have opportunities. If they get going, that opens up everything else.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
texas / chris beard likes to run a full court press. their starting 5 are all 6'2 - 6'7 and while their forwards aren't super nimble they can defend guards pretty well on switches. so it might be tough for us to 1) initiate our offense and 2) get open off screens
very interesting matchup
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Yeah, mid-season VT would definitely struggle against their matchup. But I think Storm's assertiveness of late will help get the offense going. I imagine we are going to try to feed the ball inside to Aluma/Mutts early and force them to bring more defenders into the paint. That should open up an inside-out game and Aluma and Mutts are such excellent passers at the 4 and 5.
But, if we TX can force turnovers or we can't hit open shots, they could cause us problems.

Farmville isn't a buzzing metropolis, but the in-town options have grown over recent years.
So has the campus. I was just there and they have another big building going in.
The town's development seems to have taken a bit of a sprawl approach. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

LET'S GOOOOOOO!
HOkIES!!!

That giant center will be tough to overcome but our game is similar to Iowa who just beat them
Center won't matter when it's raining threes!!
Whoa. Lets beat Texas first. Then we can worry about Yale.
Texas is a decent team, but if VT can score/play well on offense we will win. In terms of Purdue, I think Young puts Mutts on the 7'7 goon an lives with him scoring a few hook shots. And blowing a 20 point lead to a terrible NC State team
If Mutts outperforms him, does that make Mutts King of the Lab?
I know it's a moot point, but I don't understand how we were this close to not dancing, despite winning 20+ games in a top 5 basketball conference, beating every ACC team to make the big dance, and being on a hot streak.

Did they win any of those?

I'd like to see the margin of victory on those too. I feel like our losses were narrow and we had quite a few really big wins.
Yeah that's why the computers like us so much because it takes that into account. BPI and kenpom both heavily factor in mov and NET heavily factors in efficiency which is closely related to mov.

And remember, the quadrant system (based off of NET rankings) is more important than the NET rankings themselves! Logic!
I recall a program defining game against Texas one time...let's beat em in basketball too.
Thanks for posting that, it was a good watch.
Gotta admit, the "Produced by VTphreak4eva" at the end hit me in the feels a bit.
Time to put the rest of the country on notice
Got all excited for the "east" region 🙄
its ok the west region is playing in greenville
When will we find out game times?
Looks like it's 4:30 on Friday
Once we beat them, they will be referred to as "Techsas" from then on.
Where is the sweet 16 site if we make it to the 2nd weekend?
One game at a time
The team can worry about one game at a time, we as fans can look as far ahead as we want and it won't matter
SOUTH? Sweet 16/Elite Eight March 24 and 26 San Antonio, Texas AT&T Center
WEST? Sweet 16/Elite Eight March 24 and 26 San Francisco, California Chase Center
MIDWEST? Sweet 16/Elite Eight March 25 and 27 Chicago, Illinois United Center
EAST?- Sweet 16/Elite Eight March 25 and 27 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Wells Fargo Center
Interesting- they usually put one regional in a dome. Not this year.
Dome regionals were done because the NCAA required cities who wanted to host the Final Four to show they could stage a game in a dome prior to receiving a Final Four. They've dropped that requirement, so no more dome regionals.
Midwest looks super easy comparing to the others. Miami could make a sweet sixteen without working too hard
I like the draw. Vegas opened us only a 1-point underdog against Texas. And as an 11, Mike Young can play up the "No Believes in US" narrative.
HokieSports is saying tip-off is 4:30 Friday on TBS
God damn it. I might be feeling sick on Friday. Might have to go home at lunch.
Primo happy hour time slot! Better than 2 pm for sure.
Here are all of the opening round game times
Thanks! TBS at 4:30 Friday it is!
Ugh, going to be on an airplane at that time.. flight leaves at 4:00pm. Sadness.... but just discovered Delta has live TBS on their app. JOY!!!
46th ranked? That committee can shove it.

So, what's everyone thinking on next years starting 5? Too early I know, but wondering if anyone will make a surprise return *cough Mutts, cough*.
It ain't the offseason yet my friend. We still playing this year!!
Que the progressive commercial GIF - "Let's not talk about leaving before we get in the stadium"
I'd guess that Pedulla, Maddox, Alleyne and Cattoor will all start next year. If not every game, they'll all get 20+ minutes I'm sure.
Is Mutts eligible for another year?
It's my understanding that Mutts and Aluma could return but I don't think it's likely. I would N'Guessan would be the fifth starter but that's just need guessin'.
So Disney cartoon movies for the 2022 challenge? I truly enjoy your GIFting us these challenges.

This is some merch I could spend too much money on. Football minifigs too. They don't even have to be individualized, just a bunch of numbered torsos.

Here's hoping! My birthday was Saturday and it was truly the best gift I could have imagined!!
Alright who's birthday is 4/4?
My wife's is the 7th, which is about when they'd be getting back to the Burg
Mine is 4/6. Will happily accept the gift of a Natty a couple days early.
*raises hand* I know what I'll be using my bday wish on....
Mine is 4/4. And I will be 75 this year. I think a NC would be a fitting 75th birthday present.
