OT: Masters Week

Hello Friends.

One of the best weeks of the year. Masters Week.
Figured we could start the spring discussion with this, and parlay into its own golf thread if we so desired.

First off, I DO believe the big cat will put a peg in the ground on Thursday. Not sure he will make it to Thursday, but if he does, I'll say he makes the cut. His chipping woes are gone. And he's figured out how to move the ball around without hurting himself as badly now. (Him and Charlie finished 2nd in the father-son challenge!!) Going to be interesting watching him since he knows that place pretty well.

Second, I'm picking Cameron Smith. He's hot now. And I have him on my fantasy team, so double up the goodness.

The guy I play the member-guest with somehow lucked into tickets for the practice round Wednesday. And somehow didn't invite me!!! Asked him to get me a Masters poker chip. Otherwise, I'm good on swag until I get there myself.

I took Cameron Smith as well got him at 16-1. Also took Sam Burns and Abraham Ancer-gonna be a fun week.

I got a dollar on Tommy Fleetwood, Sam Burns, Brooks Koepka, Cam Smith, Xander Schauffele, and 2 on Tiger! Should be fun.

What site do you use?
Any one of them better for sign up bonus now?

I started on betMGM but am now on Ceasars-both have about the same sign up bonus and the MGM interface is a bit better but I've won more on Caesar's so I stayed with them. I live in Arizona so the bonuses go back to when online gaming was legalized here (early September) so I'm not sure if they are the same where you live. Good luck!

Oh and Tiger Motherfucking Woods is going to play-this shit gonna be good

After looking around on-line, in DE were are in-person only, even though it's been legalized and authorized. Oh well. Might be for the best. I can still participate in a few things on Draft Kings.

was this intentional or fortunate?

Onward and upward

Intentional during practice rounds I believe. Kind of a tradition.

It is tradition. When I lived in Atlanta early 2000's I got the chance to go to a couple different Monday practice rounds. 16 is always kind of a gathering point, and behind there is the back entrance, and there is a big concession stand (at least there was 2006/7) right behind there as well. So there is always a bunch of people posted up there.

After each player in the practice round hits their normal tee shots the crowd starts the slow clap/chant of Skip...Skip....Skip!!! The players pretty much don't have choice, you get booed if you don't do it. So they come up to the edge of the water on the downslope and skip one across the water to try and get on the green.... crowd goes wild.

I have never been to a tournament round, but the two Monday practice rounds I went to were pretty awesome, a very relaxed atmosphere. Monday is probably the best day to really walk around and take in the whole course.

Monday is the best day at any major for walking around and seeing stuff. They only get more crowded by the day.

The British open wasn't even checking tickets on Monday, you just walked onto the course

The players skip balls across the water on 16 during practice rounds.

Here's an ace from Jon Rahm a couple years back

Headed to Augusta Friday night for the weekend matchups! Ready to stuff my face with some pimento sandwiches.

Vroom Vroom

Hope you didn't have your heart set on the peach ice cream sandwiches though.

Headed down tomorrow night. I married up and the in-laws have badges. Going Thursday so I will finally get to see the whole field. I never played until I went to Augusta for the first time, but that place is so beautiful - and the beers flow- I decided I needed to play this game. Enjoy the pimento sandwiches but my favorite are the bbq, more substance for drinking
Definitely worth the experience of you can finagle a way to go.

Cheers to the best sporting event of the year.

I threw a little coin on Louis. Seems like one of those storybook plots where he finished runner up all last year and finally slays the dragon this year.

One of the greatest swings in golf. Definitely punches above his weight class. He can be boring (the Open victory comes to mind) but so solid.

Okay, so I've got a bit of cash on my sports betting app (thank you, Kansas). But I really don't have any betting strategies for sports other than college basketball. Does anybody have any betting strategies for golf?

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

Pick the winner. Bet a lot.

I typically bet 4-6 guys all generally different odds. I usually bet the amount to get the same winnings across each guy. And usually that winning amount would be about 7x what my total bet is across the board.

Let's say I have $100 to bet on winners. I would want to bet each of the 5-7 guys whatever it is to win $700. If I bet more of the lower odds guys, I would have probably closer to 5 bets. If I stagger it more and get some higher odds guys, I would likely get 7 bets in if that makes sense.

And then additionally, you can have fun with matchups and first round leader bets to try to win back your $100 you put on winner bets.

Also and probably most important, check all betting apps and sites for odds. Golf odds can vary greatly between apps.

Strategy on picks is differs between tournaments as each course may favor different skill sets. You can go on podcasts, Twitter, Google to find different gambling articles/people that may have better insight/formulas than I can provide.

Betting on golf is hard and the masters is unique because it usually takes a while for even the best players to learn how to play the course. That said I look for guys that have won recently with excellent short games as you win here around the greens. I really think Cam Smith has the game and he's been there a few times now-also like Sam Burns.

But make sure they haven't won too recently because golfers haven't been winning back to back tournaments like Tiger used to do consistently when he was favored versus the field.

Lol this was a bad take this weekend. Scottie is HOT right now with 4 of the last 6 including the masters. Definitely deserving of that #1 ranking.

Getting some unreal breaks in regards to favorable drops doesn't hurt either but what a performance I thought he'd fold after he hooked it behind the scoreboard on 3

Boom

If you go to the Masters site, you can play their version of fantasy. Pick one player from each category: First Timers, Past Winners, Americans, Non-Americans. Tie beaker is total number of birdies for all 4 rounds.

Hm. I was in Augusta just last week. Maybe I should have stayed

How do you create a thread for the Masters and not open it with:

"Hello, Friends"

???

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Fixed. Lo siento

Might be just me overthinking bets but it seems like the early/late tee times for Thursday/Friday are getting the short end of the stick as far as weather goes.

There definitely can be advantages to it...
Sort of like those that play right in front and right behind Tiger and to some extent Lefty.

Thought I'd share this tweet since it is Master's week:

Let's Go

HOKIES

Shame we'll never get to see her play there

that would be the most annoying masters ever lol

Annoying? Let's agree on distracting

Her takes on pimento cheese are unacceptable and I just can't get over that.

"This is the greatest week of the year"

Onward and upward

I'm not a fan of the continued lengthening of the course. I like opening up the right fairway on 11 but the overall length added seems unnecessary on many holes. I don't understand the logic of adding length to keep the long hitters from having a big advantage. If anything it gives them an even greater advantage. Half the field now has no shot to win the tournament. Guys like Kisner who have are super accurate and have great short games don't have the length to contend.
Part of the magic of Augusta is the possibility of someone going low on the back nine on Sunday to make a run at the tournament. 10, 11, and 12 are three of the hardest 6 holes. Now instead of watching to see if someone makes a run we are watching to see if the leader falls apart. I still love the Masters but I don't want it to turn into the US Open being played at ANGC.

Disagree. For 1, Augusta has always been a long hitters course. Very rarely do you see short hitters win, and when they do, its usually weather related (Z. Johnson). I am fine with all the added distances EXCEPT 15. 15 is usually one of the most exciting holes of the tournament, and this year nothing rally happened on it. No eagles, only a couple balls in the water. Most guys who hit the fairway still layed up. It was boring.

Scoring at Augusta is still low, even with the weather and wind this year. Some courses will favor longer hitters, that's just how it goes. 10 and 11 are long, but straight downhill, most of the guys have less than 150 into half the Par 4s anyway. Not to mention there is essentially no rough.

ME Class of '16

I'd rather be golfing.

Agree on 15, need to move it up some to get more guys to go for it. Should be at least more than half the field going for it instead of laying up. If you hit a good one in the fairway there, you should have a shot at the green.

when a couple of second shot mis-hits land short of the creek leading to birdies, the second shot is too long
