Of all the lowlights in the Snyder era of the Commies, he has gone and screwed with the money. The League will let you get away with quite a lot, but not picking the owners pockets. Reports flying that ol Danny Boy was skimming from the piece of the ticket sales that is supposed to go to the League distribution pool. Has he finally crossed a thick enough line or will the League keep looking the other way?

Perhaps the most amazing thing about the Cranky Redskins fan Guide to Dan Snyder is that it was written back in 2010.
Letting the team have a caustic environment towards women is bad and you get a nasty slap on the hand, but mess the NFL's money and you'll be executed. You'd think that last sentence deserves a "/s" because the inverse should be true, but unfortunately this is the reality the NFL owners operate in.
Snyder should have been totally removed a while ago and him "stepping down" only to hand over the day to day to his wife was a joke. If this new reveal turns out to be true I can't see how the NFL would allow this group to continue operating the team, and may end up forcing the ownership to sell the team.
For sure, the other owners will help smooth over accusations so that if they come up in their own organization, the precedent is set and they have some room to handle things. You start stealing from your only allies and you sever your lifeline. If this is true, I would suspect the majority of league owners to start pushing him out. Bezos seems to like Washington, how about the Washington Carriers? Not naval, but packages. Either that or the League will push hard for some minority ownership.
It wouldn't surprise me. I wonder though if the league has limitations on team ownership also being an owner of NFL media distribution. Amazon has been seriously rumored to be in the running of getting the rights to Sunday Ticket now that the DirecTV deal is up.
It surprises me not at all that one of the biggest publications that covers the mess that is Dan Snyder's football team is the Washington Post. Owned by none other than ...
I think he wants the team.
That seems coincidental to me. Of course the Post is covering the story, it's the Washington Post covering the Washington football team.
Doesn't mean Bezos wouldn't love to own the team, but the fact of Post coverage doesn't really indicate anything. If it was the Falcons and the AJC covered the story, that wouldn't mean the Cox family was making a play on the team.
Butttt if you use your property being the washington post to run and produce articles making Dan Snyder look worse and worse and possibly forcing a sale when he doesnt want to. NFL teams are an incredible investment for the wealthiest of the wealthiest and being a sole owner wont happen with Snyder in the picture. Not saying I buy the conspiracy but it seems a bit fishy to me.
It doesn't take an agenda to uncover legitimate corruption on anything Dan Snyder touches. If anything, the fact that this was all buried for so long makes you question what the hell the Washington Post was doing this whole time.
Totally agree, I wouldnt be surprised at all to find out if the guys at the post were being guided to dig on the organization but like you said tis not hard to find crap on that sleezeball. I dont see the team leaving his grip until the grim reaper comes calling hes survived all of the crap so far hes not going anwyhere.
Everything Danny Touches Dies
Fair point. Though I'd say I can't recall the Post doing much investigative reporting on Snyder and the team before Bezos bought the Post. And I do think that Snyder was doing shady stuff all along. I remember seeing the initial coverage of the sexual harassment problems in the Post and saying to myself, "Looks like Bezos wants a new toy". Purely speculative on my part but the timing seemed more than coincidental.
This most recent thing came from a testimony before Congress, who then sent a letter about it to the FTC. The Post isn't exactly going out muckraking to uncover dirt on Snyder.
Money drives change because those with money have all the power. You keep the people with money happy and you can pretty much do whatever you want, but the second your actions start fucking with their money? You're done.
It's why the only effective method of protest right now is a mass boycott and pressuring sponsors to pull money. And it's why Putin is paranoid about his life right now having wrecked the value of the ruble.
But to have Dan actively stealing from other owners? Lol, he's done. He's so fucking done.
Don't get my hopes up please, I've learned to enjoy Sunday afternoons without caring how my hometown Skins/Comms are doing over the past 25 hopeless years.
Me too-can't wait to root for the Washington football team again after decades of clownish mismanagement
Please, please be the end of him owning the team.
This would not sadden me.
One can only hope...
Man I hope it is his last strike. That team deserves a better owner than Snyder.
I'll buy the franchise from Snyder for $1.00.
Then move the team here.
I think I can get it for $1.50 at this rate.
I'll bid tree-fiddy.
That man is a like a cockroach. He survives everything. I'll believe he's gone when I see Roger Goodell at a podium announcing he's gone. And then, I'll check to make sure its not a deepfake.
Just give the team to someone other than his wife
Are you suggesting that suspending his control of the team, and giving it to his wife wasn't an effective punishment???
lol... I'll believe it when I see it. I've seen too many pose this question after each new scandal/damaging report.
I'd be more suprised he gets forced to sell based on previous history.
It makes no sense to me, mathematically, why he would do this. 40% of the revenue goes into the pool and then gets evenly distributed. The Manders don't draw hardly fans any more, so if they put their 40% in the pool, my guess is they would get more money back....
You think Dan Snyder does anything that makes sense?
I hate the guy probably more than anyone else but he didn't get rich by being completely stupid. I'm glad he fucked up and hope it is the end of him. I'll believe that when I see it though.
Because he's a rich asshole who only cares about himself and how much personal wealth he can accumulate while exploiting as many people as possible
Let's be honest, if he was only about earning money would he have bought the skinmanders?
Yeah. He paid 800 million for a team that was one of the highest valued franchises at the time, and is still in the top five (now worth a reported 4.2 billion). That's a solid return over 20 years.
That just isn't right, mismanage an organization for 20 years and end up 5x in profit.
It wasn't him. It was the league's growth, particularly in TV contracts, that directly led to those profits.
And yet not at all unusual. Jerry Richardson paid the NFL $206m in 1993 to bring a franchise to Charlotte. 20 years later, after multiple accusations of sexual misconduct and outright Hard R racism in the front office, he sold it for $2.2 billion, for a full 10x return on investment.
During his entire tenure, the franchise never had back to back seasons with a winning record.
And now, David Tepper, the asshole billionaire who bought the team from Richardson, just canceled construction on the team's new HQ and training facility in South Carolina because he didn't think he was getting enough public funding from SC taxpayers. And he did this after basically freezing construction with it half-built with public funds already spent on it.
The guy is the richest owner in the NFL and is just casually burning taxpayer money on canceled projects because people aren't sufficiently kissing his ass to his own liking.
I imagine the state is going to sue him for his half and win. SC isn't going to take a 100-300 million dollar hit on the chin without swinging back.
I can't recall someone so brazenly pissing off taxpayers like this. At this point its pretty clear he wants to move the team out of Charlotte and is going to pull off every sleazy move in the book to make it work. Pulling out of a $800m facility because he couldn't double the taxpayer contribution in the middle of construction for a guy who increased his net worth from $14.5 billion to $16.7 billion over the past 10 months is next level asshole behavior.
Super glad I don't live in one of those big cities with pro sports teams where taxpayers have to foot the bill for these increasingly ridiculous stadiums and arenas.
It's still a griping point here in Cincinnati. I think now that LA has their team the owners threats to move the team carry a lot less weight. Every city should be telling these owners to fund their own improvements.
If the Owner wants the revenue from the stadium he needs to be part of the project. If the City gets the revenue from a City stadium, I got no problem with that.
This is what is going to hurt Lerner in traying to sell the Nats. The city of DC owns the stadium. So he is just selling the team.
The NFL literally prints their own money. They get billions with a B annually from TV alone. The league should build stadiums and own them. They have enough money to do it. The fact that they wouldn't lend Marc Davis a dime for a stadium is ridiculous.
The deals are so incredibly bad too, it's not like the city gets any money from concessions or anything else most of the time. They are literally just throwing money away.
They should get tax revenue at the minimum.
Either way, they are getting money from the league share. I think the alleged plan was to lie about their ticket sales so they didn't have to pony up their true 40%. You're right they are definitely takers, not givers, when it comes to ticket revenue, but you can really make out if you only chip in 25% instead of 40% before getting paid out.
Using hypothetical numbers to make a point: Snyder takes $1M out, earns 5% interest on it ($50k), then has to pay the $1M back plus a $10k fine, he's still ahead $40k. Maybe he was doing something like that?
I see he was underreporting revenue, so seems like a bigger issue than just what I mentioned above, but wonder if the same logic applies to if he ever got caught?
And now it has been uncovered that he was intentionally hiding and withholding millions of dollars in refundable deposits due to thousands of fans at the same time he was underreporting revenue to the league.
All of this stemming from the Congressional review triggered by the other allegations that he mistreated cheerleaders and other women in the workplace.
what a guy!
And it appears that the ticket revenue underreporting went on since at least 2012. And the fact that it includes CFB games means that our games against Cinci and WVU are likely a part of this scam.
To be fair, this is pretty much what Ticketmaster does as a business policy, so I'm not sure I would come down on him specifically for it. The whole ticketing industry is royally fucked in this regard and needs to be completely blown up.
I highly recommend taking 20 minutes to watch John Oliver's take on this.
Do people not know this happens? No offense whatsoever, but I thought this was common knowledge.
I always recomend buying tickets off of "TickPick" as they don't add fees for the buyers. They only add fees for sellers. And I know some people will say "oh well they just add in the fees into the price of the ticket"... Not true, at least in my experience... I have found the same tickets on StubHub for lets say $50. After fees, it was $75. Go onto TickPick, find same ticket, listed for $50 and that's what I paid.
I assumed it was pretty widely known as well. I watched the episode I linked above with friends and everyone else was baffled!
Ticketmaster pisses me off so much. I have season tickets for the Carolina Hurricanes and dealing with them for selling my unused tickets is abysmal. Even for the NHL, they hold some tickets aside to sell on the secondary market, but they do so with intent to undercut fans looking to actually offload. They place a fee on top of every ticket I try to sell while at the same time placing a fee on any ticket that someone buys. When I had to offload a couple tickets last year for the playoffs, by just trying to charge a literal break even price for myself, they ended up putting about $100 in fees on each ticket I was trying to sell, and to make things even shadier, they hid half of those fees from the pricing they said they listed on my end.
Needless to say, because of the fees they were putting on me and the fact they were undercutting with their own tickets they were selling, mine never sold. For a game that was a complete sellout.
Frustrating doesn't even begin to explain it.
Wow. I knew it was screwy but not this bad
As a redskins fan for 20+ years, I'll say it again... When it comes to Dan being forced to sell team... I'll believe it when I see it
That will be one of the best days of my life lol
Virginia Attorney General launching investigation now.
https://abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory/virginia-ag-launching-investigation-nfls-commanders-84305788
Interesting enough, AG is looking into it after the Commanders apparently provided enough evidence that whistleblower was actually just blowing smoke.
The Washington Commanders have bought land in Woodbridge, Virginia, for what could be a potential site of the NFL team's next stadium, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.
New thread, please.
Possible hope for Washington fans: Owners counting votes towards a possible ouster of Daniel Snyder?
https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/05/21/report-nfl-owners-are-c...
There was an aside in an Athletic article about the Rams owner that said a source from within the Commanders said they were dead last in revenue last year. Sad to say, but that fact alone might spur more action on ousting Snyder than anything else. Before Snyder showed up Washington was one of the most valuable franchises in sports with an absolutely die-hard fanbase, now the franchise is a total laughingstock.
Reported revenue or actual revenue?
The Commanders were dead last in revenue because they have only been a team for a couple of months. Before that they were the Washington Football Team, and before that the Redskins. Hard to push merchandise without a name...
I guarantee that if WFT had won the Super Bowl their mercy would have sold out. Have a team that doesn't suck and the revenue should take care of itself.
Agreed winning always helps as well.
Merchandise is not a huge driver of revenue for NFL teams. If anything, having an entirely new line of merch to sell should make selling merch easier, the fact that they couldn't is reflective of how many fans they have pushed away over the years and how poorly they executed their re-branding. Personal anecdote, I probably would have made an impulse buy if they were called the Hogs, but Commanders is a dumb name and then I remembered that I would rather Snyder's team lose than my team win and came to my senses.
Not to get too far off topic here, but... As a life long Redskins fan (I'm in my mid 40's) I would have loved the Washington Hogs. It would have connected us to the past (you young bucks remember the Hogs?) and moved us forward in a much better way IMO.
In any event, absolutely everything Snyder has done since taking over has served to slowly disenfranchise fans and erode the quality of the franchise itself.
And Nike had 2 years to re-brand it and they came up with Arial font and a W on the helmet. That will really move stuff off the shelves. They botched the re-brand in every way possible. Nobody in that board room thought about Eagles and Cowboy fans calling you the commies? really? And Nike up to their old tricks trying to change the colors of the team without changing the colors of the team. Laughable.
"See, they don't treat VT especially badly, they even do this to NFL teams!"
-- someone, maybe
Woah hold on
Giants fans will absolutely be calling them that, too.
I dont really carry about NFL and I'm happy to call them commies.
As someone who hates the NFC East
I might actually stick with Woodbridge Football Team
Nah man at least Woodbridge wines are appealing to some people. They might actually take that as a compliment, whereas the Commies....
Lets just say I wouldn't be opposed to the Eagles breaking out their throwbacks when they take on the Commies this year. No, not the 90s throwbacks, this one:
Slight change of blue shading would be absolutely perfect against the Commies.
And in a report that shouldn't surprise anybody, Snyder worked to bury the findings of the sexual harassment report.
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/34130141/daniel-snyder-conducted-sha...
The NFL still won't do anything to him.
The NFL has set a pretty low precedent with the owners that is going to blow up in it's face with Deshaun Watson.
Keep in mind, "The NFL" is basically 32 uber rich individuals/investment groups that have two goals:
1) make money for Me
2) Help the other owners make money because that makes money for Me
Now in Snyder's case, he wasn't helping with goal 2. So I'm surprised there hasn't been more of a response from "The NFL"
I'm not a conspiracy guy, but I would not be the least bit surprised if more than a handful of owners have similar skeletons in their closet.
I'm genuinely shocked that Snyder being found to have fraudulently cooked the books to underreport his revenue streams to actively take money out of the other owner's pockets didn't get him kicked out already.
The fact that it still hasn't happened leads me to believe there's a bigger scandal that will become public if he's fired, so they're content with just keeping it buried for now.
Exactly. It has the feeling that if Snyder actually got booted out, he might take a few more owners with him on the way.
It was my understanding that he hasn't been "found" to have cooked the books yet. He has been accused of cooking the books by a fired employee from another part of the redskins organization.
Goodell needs 75% of owners to vote him out. That's in the by laws. Would he get that much support?
It's all dependent on Jerry, though.
Would he be willing to cut Snyder, knowing it might make Washington better?
Jones is one of if not the smartest pro owners in any sport, and he's a businessman first, and fan a very close second. There is absolutely a reason to cut Snyder out even if that makes Washington - TV ratings. A better Washington team is better for the whole league, and those classic Dallas/Washington nostalgia match ups become a lot more watchable (ie lucrative) when both teams are good.
Is it finally time to close out this thread? As much as I want it to happen, unless there's video evidence of Snyder committing some kind of sexual assault (or whatever heinous crime), he isn't going anywhere. Just a bunch of he said, she said.
Only way I can see him getting the boot/other owners agreeing to vote him out is if the FTC shows Snyder actually cooked the books/had a separate financial book keeping. Otherwise, not happening IMHO. If the crime doesn't hurt other owner's pockets, history tells us Snyder isn't going anywhere until he's 6 feet under.
The steady but slow drip of crap from the Commodes, errr I mean Commanders, has kept this thing living. I fear this thread may always be needed.
Snyder isn't going to live forever.
I'll take the over.
Is it really needed though? People have been saying "could this be Snyder's last straw?" since the dinosaurs roamed the earth, and yet he's still the owner. If more things come out but he stays the owner, I am not sure why this is needed. History shows this will not be his "last straw".... just my bitter redskins (what's left) fandom $0.02
So I'm no law expert so I'm curious what happened next. He's conveniently hiding in France for "business reasons" but now with the subpoena issued for an appearance next week can he just stay overseas to avoid the subpoena or can they issue it internationally?
Apparently just straight up ignoring subpoenas from Congress is a thing now, so I wouldn't hold my breath that he will appear any time soon, staying overseas or otherwise.
My apologies in advance if stating observable fact is against the board guidelines.
The other thing is he said he would be happy to discuss things in person when he got back with a lawyer present. They wanted him to come back immediately regardless of his plans or to do it via zoom with no lawyer. He told them no.
I can't say that I really disagree with his choice.
That's not how subpoenas work. You show up immediately or you go to jail. Those are (supposed to be) the only options.
I was referring to the committee asking him to testify before the subpoena. They wanted him on their schedule even though he was out of the Country. I am not a fan of Snyder, but it was ridiculous to expect him to cut short a scheduled trip or deprive him of his right to counsel.
Sure I dont disagree he can do what he wants but the issue is its obvious even to a blind man that this trip was conveniently planned to avoid being in the country when the hearing was scheduled. This date was set ages ago and you dont need a brain to tell hes simply avoiding having to report to the hearing.
I think that some of the high profile ignoring of subpoenas are complicated by other political nonsense. Even the folks on the committee who think this is a waste of time probably aren't going to go to bat for Dan Snyder's right to just ignore a congressional subpoena, which means he would be in contempt. Don't think that means they send Seal Team Six onto his yacht or whatever, but it seems like it could start having actual impacts on the NFL/the other owners if he keeps dragging this out.
