This guy is trash. Him and Liberty are a marriage made in narcissism and hypocrisy.
If Ian McCaw is the most Jesus like leader you have then maybe you should be looking for better leaders, cause I'm sure I can find a rock some where that is more pious.
what's the obsession with liberty? We know mccaw is slimey, we know freeze is slimey, we know the former administration was pretty slimey
time after time the community talks about liberty and time and time again it's a big time lightning rod for CGs
We are in the doldrums of the off-season and anxious.
Perpetually for the last decade
Yeah it has been about that long since things were going well for VT on the field.
But for a direct answer, I think the Liberty hypocrisy is something that frustrates people and the football tie ins make it a way for people to vent together on a common point.
It's an in state school that we schedule somewhat frequently. I think it's relevant.
If the HC at UVA, ODU, or JMU did something similar, I imagine it would get a post here.
Because when the Big1G takes UVA and VT is left in the cold, Liberty will be our greatest rival! Flame on!/s
To answer the question, the reason Liberty is so controversial is that they're a for profit university while positioning themselves to be the face of right wing American Christianity in the US with the man in charge being one of the most controversial politicians over the last few years.
There is very little about them that won't stoke strong opinions from anyone who talks about them.
This is exactly why it's a no-win discussion here because more discussions than not devolve past CGs because some users can't seem to help themselves. It's either someone comes in with an unpopular opinion and becomes the lightning rod for pushback, or there's a weird one-up fest on who can diss Liberty the most.
Maybe i'm just extra sensitive bc we're not that far removed from reminders of the CGs being turned into fuel for a twitter rant by a power user here as to why the mods are homophobic and against inclusivity -- but the majority of the conversation isn't related to VT or to athletics
Edit: I'll just point out also that your main reasoning for the controversy around Liberty are basically lifted directly from the CGs -- religion, politics, and the interface of the two.
hold the phone, what
you can only imagine my reaction
If I had to guess, that was one heck of a fire to put out
95% positive they are not a "for profit" university. They are expanding so much because they have to find ways to spend that extra income. They would never actually consider lowering their fees and making college more affordable.
According to google they are private but not for profit.
So is Duke, Wake, ND, Miami, and BC for that matter.
LOL, what? Is this a sarcastic post? An in-state rival that is as despicable as humanly possible. I mean, you just spelled it out for crying out loud. And you wonder what's the obsession?
what makes for a worthwhile discussion?
where in this thread is there any actual discussion?
there isn't any, just mostly the same usual commenters firing off the same usual zingers
Like a proper Liberty admin, I'm going to sit this one out...
Preferably, in the corner of the room
Pass the popcorn...
I don't understand running around with a phone battery that low.
that's the only way you know it's a real post though!
It is almost midnight with that tweet. My phone is dying by then too.
By midnight, my phone has been plugged in for the night.
I just wish we didn't have to play them several times in the next few years. That's all.
I bring this up...
a.) We play them in almost every sport
b.) They recruit against us in almost every sport
c.) They are geographically the closest FBS football school to us
d.) They have the best record of any in-state opponent against us since 2016.
If I am not mistaken, there are a handful of people on this board that actually advocated for Freeze to be the next VT head coach when we were still searching last year.
They were a vocal minority thankfully.
Most folks didn't want the baggage.
This just shows there is more baggage than anyone thought. I just don't understand. So reading way to much about this lawsuit, this 100% sounds just like the report from Baylor. Eerily similar, depressingly similar. But Chelsea graduate in 2015, she states that her assault happened her senior year. Ian McCaw wasn't at liberty. Why is he even involved in this? So why he may not being helping the situation now, he doesn't seem to have any link to Chelsea.
So an employee who is a public representative of the institution goes online to let a alleged victim of the institution know about how great his boss is who wasn't there when the victim was. I mean I'm not a lawyer, but I'm 90% sure a lawyer would tell everyone to not communicate with other party in a lawsuit. Again, not a lawyer, but telling some one they know not what they do sounds potentially threatening. I'm not sure that Freezes word usage would count as threatening, but why open that box even a little.
Wait, are we still talking about the guy who used a state issued cell phone to line up hookers? The same guy who then decided to throw the previous coaching staff under the bus causing them to bring suit and subpoena his phone records which then uncovered aforementioned solicitation of prostitutes? That guy? Just wondering...
You forgot the part where he could have legally removed the records of his calls to hookers in the subpoenas but didnt.
So, sleazy and stupid? Perfect fit for Liberty.
The latest free Split Zone Duo podcast is all about this and Freeze in general. It's a really good listen.
Follow-up to this case....
Liberty University fined $14m by Department of Education, largest ever for Clery Act violations, for failure to disclose information during sexual assault cases on campus.
There's no reason why we should ever voluntarily play them again in any sport.
Yeah I, like many others, didn't ever see a good reason to play Liberty. If this isn't a reason for us to be looking to get out of all future competitions with Liberty I'm not sure what is.
Looks like the Falwells may have to start buying smaller yachts.
They better watch themselves.
from the corner of the room
Our AD is largely a clown- I said it. His 2 best accomplishments were luck- Both Kenny Brooks and Tony Robie were given low ball offers they were pressured to sign and did. Those are his two best coaches- and both are here by luck- not vision, etc. He tolerates a clown apparel deal with no end in sight, he botched the Fuente era and the jury is out on his mid major uninspired mens basketball coach hire- a local SWVA guy who won't demand raises was Whits vision there. Brilliant and innovative. Which brings me to your point- he also signed multi year no win football series propping up the states other d1 programs. Zero positive about either. Great Job.
It must get tiresome beating this drum this hard in almost every comment you make
Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life, I guess?
I make hundreds of comments on this board and roughly 1% about Whit Babcock. Carry on with the hyperbole though.
Hyperbole. It's, like, the BEST THING EVAR!!!!11!!1!!one!
I think this is a bit strong, but I don't have a problem criticizing Whit for some moves that haven't worked out.
I HATE the ODU and Liberty series for exactly why you said - there is no upside or value for VT in playing those games at all. And the Fuente hire was a dud for sure.
But the athletics department has done pretty well overall during Whit's time. Men's basketball has been pretty successful. I'm not a Buzz fan, but he served his purpose here (for both himself and VT) well. And Mike Young is a net win of a hire, although that pendulum may swing the other way next season. Women's basketball has exceeded all possible expectations, and VT's olympic sports are above average in the ACC (a very good olympic sport conference).
Most likely evaluating Whit's tenure is going to come down to the Pry hire - that's going to eclipse everything else combined. As of today, hiring Pry looks like a good, if not even great, decision.
But yeah, I hate the series with ODU and Liberty too.
