ESPN has pulled out of Big Ten media rights negotiations, ending one of the longest sports media relationships in the business. ESPN said no to the conference's final offer of a 7-year/$380 million per-year package, sources tell SBJ. Story to be filed soon.β John Ourand (@Ourand_SBJ) August 9, 2022
ESPN pays $190M now. Big Ten was asking for double, and they wouldn't have gotten the best game. https://t.co/glQQZc8Eodβ Stewart Mandel (@slmandel) August 9, 2022
Big Ten on verge of $1 billion in TV deals that will exclude ESPN https://t.co/Ts3pe6aQEA pic.twitter.com/HhEGdig7Z8β New York Post (@nypost) August 9, 2022
For those keeping track, $1billion per year would split to $62.5m per school.
Also, the agreement with NBC would have the Big Ten using Notre Dame home games as lead in to their conference broadcasts. So effectively, they partnered with Notre Dame to use their agreement with the ACC to get more money for the Big Ten (and ND) while kicking none of that back to us. Yay
Oh, and this probably means the end of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in basketball because ESPN was who originally set it up, and now that they won't have access to Big Ten home games, there really isn't a way for them to do that unless they want to split that money with CBS, NBC, and FOX.
