I like the setup of the offense better. No smoke and mirrors, good play design and we've gotten a lot of guys wide open. Run blocking is non-existent though and Wells is forcing way too much.
We have thrown vertically three times:
A nice throw & catch down the seam on the TD drive;
A throw to no one that they picked off;
And the throw to Gosnell on a busted coverage.

Now we find out if Pry can make halftime adjustments.
Pretty disappointed so far. Once ODU punched us a few times we went right back into our shell and couldn't respond. And fundamentals also got worse as the momentum shifted. The errors and sloppy play is not acceptable given that emphasis this year.
We cannot as a program accept another loss at ODU. The amount of embarrassment, especially putting up billboards claiming this is our state, would be almost insurmountable for a long, long time. Someone should be blasted for even scheduling these games in the first place. Should not even be happening.
We scheduled these games because the fan base was tired of playing ECU every year. "Play more in-state G5 teams. It will help recruiting."
We should be able to go in there and dog walk them in front of recruits and their families. The scheduling is not the issue here..
(Hopefully) we all prepared for a rough season. This first half confirmed many of the concerns were justified. Strap in. This is gonna be a rough year.

No. But I was really really hoping an off-season of not Fuente would help fix things.
One off season was never going to wash away six years of Fuente stench. It's going to be a rough year and 2023 likely will only be marginally better. I'm looking at 2024 as a season to see some real growth. If we win 3 more games in 24 than we do in 23 I'll feel okay. But we might only win 2 or 3 this year. 4 or 5 next. It's going to be at least 4 years before we look like a decent team. And that's if these coaches are actually any good. We don't know yet. But we'll know after 3 years where we're headed

Defense has played pretty well and the offense has moved the ball and gotten guys open all night. But penalties, sloppiness and turnovers have been the difference. We seem to be settling into a groove now but we are going to need a few more deep shots on O to open things up.

Our offense is held together with bubble gum and an old piece of tape. Defense looks decent but not enough to carry us. Historical low for VT football, let's see if Pry can turn it around. But it's going to take a couple of years.

The roster is full of incoherently recruited G5 players from a former G5 coach who was out of his depth. Pry isn't a wizard. He can only do so much. So we're losing to what is apparently a better G5 team. This is who we are right now, just own it. It's gonna suck this year.

ODU is going to be one of the worst G5 teams out there this year unless they have a QB they kept hidden in the locker room all game. That offense was anemic until the final drive and they finally realized how bad our corners suck. As soon as they started throwing jump balls they rolled down the field.
That was one of the worst called offensive games I've ever seen out of Tech tonight. I wanna give them the first game, post Fuente, no depth, bad roster excuse, but I just can't. I expected them to be bad and I was ok with that, but ODU is awful, and we just gave them that game.

Yeah, the penalties are a major issue. But I still maintain that if you're putting a ragtag team of players who aren't at the level of talent or preparedness that they need to be, mistakes like that are going to happen. Let's call that a point of emphasis going forward, gotta cut down on the mental mistakes as the season goes on. Let's see growth. That's all there is this year.

I think of how I sat in freezing cold Yankee Stadium just to watch us get absolutely destroyed by a less than average Maryland team. That game, not this game nor any before it, was the nadir of this team. That game was the culmination of Fuente's ineptitude, roster mismanagement and poor Jimmy's and Joe's coaching of epic proportions. This game shows both how far we've come from that game (a coach that trusts his first year QB enough to make mistakes, a defense that has tons of young talent, a semblance of a run game, discernable team culture and identity, etc) and how far we have to go (still need to teach proper technique, 180 degree turn on defensive scheme, youth = penalties, etc.).
Not gonna lie, this one still hurts though. Living in Hampton Roads as a Hokie sucked back in 2018, and now here we go again. But. I would rather be a Hokie where this game is the first calibration of a new regime, than ODU where this game was their Super Bowl and it all goes downhill from here.

Why is it Justin's fault? He coached to the level he was capable and did a good job (Memphis), we hired him for a role he wasn't actually good enough for, told him he was great (super early contract extension) and then kept him long after we knew he wasn't going to work.
He performed poorly but a head coach can't run the program into the ground if the AD doesn't let them.
This roster was recruited under Fuente's watch. which apparently isn't capable of winning in the Sun Belt.

We all knew our recruiting sucked and we were trending the wrong direction. Our AD let it continue to the point where it got this bad. There's only one person to blame for the downward turn in our football program, and it's Whit; the buck stops at his desk.
This is on both of them. Fuente knew he wasn't cut out for the job, that's why he didn't do anything to try and improve, including admit it and ask Whit for more support staff. And whit should've left his ass in Norfolk 2018.

D played incredible. One bad play on a fluke throw up pass. O was misboggling. I hope our OC learns quickly, because that was one of the worst playcalling and personnel management I've witnessed.

Bold prediction - I think Pry shakes up his O staff after this season. Was not impressed with Bowen's playcalling (repeatedly went away from the underneath stuff to the TEs and King when it was working). If that's the best QB Glenn can put on the field that isn't going to cut it.
Terrible game all around but that was one of the worst home jobs by refs I've ever seen. The PI on Kakavitsas was horseshit, which directly lead to the loss. Then the PI on their 4th down that was the most uncatchable I've ever seen... So bad. That's said, the conservative play calling was a very concerning omen for the season. No deep shots. We hand of to Holston with the game on the line when King was great. So...same old stuff on O. Also Wells was way worse than I expected :(

Some things about this game surprised me, some did not. The ineptness of the offense was a surprise. The defensive choke at the end was a surprise. But everything else, not so much. Sorry folks this team is high school or just a step above. Penalties, fumbles, and just simpleton bad execution. Sorry folks, don't get your hopes up. Yeah there's a lot of rah rah that the new coach engages and is not Fuente. But when you are at a high school level for talent and execution, it does not matter. I now live in SC. As I understand, Wells was the guy. Word is the QB competition wasn't very close. So what happened? Bowen is quoted as saying we're going to be aggressive and throw deep 2-3 times per quarter...we didn't even try until 0:33 left in the game. Our WR1 was out, so now we don't try?? Then where is your big play? King played masterfully, but that was him making plays, not play call an design. We didn't do anything pull their D away from the LOS. We Rama very vanilla IZ game. Very little outside/swing/sprint plays, crossing routes (behind the LBs), etc. Sadly we coached scared...not aggressive. Nothing to wear them down. We would run an IZ play, walk back to huddle and the. Stand around until the play clock ran down and snap. Why didn't we run tempo? We know they are G5, so they don't have the depth or size to compete...wear them down with the controlled run game. Instead played soft, made mistakes we had no chance of making up for them. ODU slowed down the game, kept it close and then made 1-2 key plays to give them a shot to win...and it worked.

I'm concerned that Wells strength was his deep ball and we never tried it. I'll take a 40 yard INT over 3 downs of slog and then an INT that gives them the ball 20+ yards closer. I hate to lose, but lose trying to win and playing to your strengths. Don't lose playing scared.
The offense got flat once Kaleb Smith went down and never recovered. Wells threw too many picks even though some weren't his fault. Defense played well but missed some easy interceptions and made bad mistakes late. How the Center made all big 10 second team is beyond me...
And yet, it's fucking Old Dominion. They stopped playing football for 30+ years! We shouldn't be one injury away from losing to ODU.

Well...I haven't commented on anything since the bball season ended. That being said we absolutely did everything in our power to lose that game. I could go on and on about interceptions and special teams and penalties and...well you guys get it. I hope this is a wake up call similar to the 1995 team after losing 16-0 at home to a then not good Cincinnati program. I'll be at the game next Saturday and as we all know the most important coaching and practicing happens between week one and two. Let's see what happens here and if it isn't better on offense we will have another long grueling season struggling to get to 6 wins....missed you guys! Let's go!
