Rumor: VT/UVA game moved to Dec 3rd (update: game has been cancelled)

I have been hearing from a number of sources that the game is going to be postponed to Dec 3rd.

Multiple people are claiming that their mobile tickets already reflect the date change.

Looks like this will give UVA some much needed time with everything that is going on this upcoming weekend.

I'm down with that. Anything we can do to help them return to normalcy. I hope they get the chance to honor their seniors so they don't miss out on that. Neither of us are bowl bound so why not do it on championship weekend? And, while I don't mean to belittle their situation, but nothing is more normal than a loss to the hokies. /ducks

Just checked my tickets and they're still showing this weekend.

They apparently reverted it back. I bet someone in the ticket office jumped the gun and got called out on it.

@ 2:30

Tyrod did it, Mikey!

That's what my tailgate group said as well. Haven't seen any official confirmations yet.

I'm guessing they're letting UVA/Elliot make the announcement. Should know for sure by tomorrow I would think.

If you feel the leather in your hand let it rip.

Looking at coming up. Will anyone be tailgating in Lot 18 or other lots and wouldn't mind a free loader?

Wasn't sure y'all or other folks would be making special trip up and tailgating or just coming up.

We will have to figure out what the rest of the crew is doing. Maybe we will get that Thanksgating in after all.

Whatever they want, its cool. Don't really care much about the game or the result. Just give them any and all support you can

Dare I say it.... but do we invite them to jump with us and we run side by side out of the tunnel together?

I don't think the UVA alum would be interested as it's not their tradition, but I could see some sign of unity being done pre kickoff.

We can be friends, but let's not get carried away.

I think the Senior Day idea is a good one, though.

We have the game, but we're still going to compete against them.

Both ECU and VT ran out at the same time to Sandman in the opener of the 2007 season

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

That's a no brainer then. If we let ECU run out with us for writing a check I really hope we give UVA the same honor.

I just read that UVA has not practiced since the shooting happened. I doubt they are ready to go for Saturday. Thinking back to 2007, I really hope they play the game even if it is moved. I remember how the first football game vs ECU felt. It was about coming together to say shout that this will not define Hokie Nation. For a few hours, it gave everyone a chance to be focused on something positive about VT rather than the shootings (it didn't hurt that we had a stacked team). Personally that was very comforting and if we play, I hope UVA fans can experience that as well.

Canceled- official

I really hope this was a decision left to the UVA players and coaches and NOT the ACC and media partners. Plans were being drawn up earlier today for the game one 12/3 then suddenly everything went radio silent now it's canceled. Those players, coaches and staff at UVA deserve to have their say and their time how they want.

That had better be the case.

They're the only ones who deserved to make that call.

From the email (obviously take w/ a grain of salt but fwiw):

"The decision was made following communication between the Atlantic Coast Conference, Virginia and Virginia Tech athletic department administration.

The ACC and Virginia Tech continue to support UVA as it deals with the devastating tragedy..."

VB born, class of '14

That's sounds like UVA making a decision and VT respecting the decision.

Sounded like there was some chatter that UVA may not have had the numbers to play, some players wanting to opt out if the game went ahead. I can't imagine honestly wanting to mentally prepare for a game under these circumstances. I think it was probably the right call and hopefully everyone was onboard.

This would make the most sense. As of yesterday mid day, it was announced internally that the game was pushed to Dec 3rd and everyone was preparing for that.. Then out of the blue it was canceled. .

2022 season:

I'm a little relieved that it's over, though I wish it were for different circumstances. We go out on a high note, UVA gets the time they need.

Disappointing part is that our Seniors won't have Senior Day.

We should do a senior day celebration during the first game next year for all current seniors.

It's a glorified practice in a half filled stadium. The seniors deserve all the pomp and circumstance of senior day during a regular season home game.

This is my school

That didn't feel like much of an ending to a season, but it is what it is.

"Vick, dashing back . . . here he comes again . . . Electrifying . . . and have you ever seen anything like this?"

Forcing a fumble on a sack to beat a nearby in-state opponent? I'll take it.

Ending on a win is about as good as we could have hoped for.

Seemed like a horrible long shot just 2.5 weeks ago

If that's what the UVA players needed then that's fine by me. Whatever is best for them I'm okay with

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Honestly, beating Liberty to close out the season feels like a win to me. That game would have been bittersweet regardless of the outcome. Too soon.

Undo the calamity that is your mammaries

Hopefully this was UVA's call and backed by us, either way I understand it.

How do cancellations get recorded in overall records? Or do they not count at all?

Go Hokies!

Game never happened.
Our season record is 3-8, 1-6. UVA ended at 3-7, 1-6.
The listing of Commonwealth Cup games will skip from 2021 to 2023.

But we keep the cup for another year... :)

Wish we could get JMU. Makes sense, they're open and would prob agree to it. In state game in their first year, we could make back some of the lost revenue

I don't think playing anyone except UVA on 12/3 would have worked out, because I don't think any other team would have generated a decent enough crowd turnout to justify the expense.

I know JMU is not thought of too fondly around here but I do think they were the only opponent that would have been legitimately excited to play VT. Their fan base would have likely bought a lot of tickets and treated it as their "bowl game."

There are a couple of legitimate questions I have regarding JMU and their transition period.

First, why did they only have 11 games scheduled this year? Is that part of the transition rules? Would they be able to schedule a 12th game?

Also, I know they were pushing to get bowl eligibility this year, but I all of the articles I can find about that are from early October. Did the NCAA close that window?

They're insufferable and second only to Liberty in state in my eyes. I live and work in Harrisonburg and it's obnoxious. I want to pummel the shit out of them one more time then never schedule them again

In lieu of an actual game...

A joint spring game in Charlottesville would be kind of cool. $X general admission, raise money for the families.

I hope they give the option to refund the ticket money or have it donated to a fund for the victims/families.

uva - the taint of the ACC

I vote for option B

So, not to take away from the tragedy at UVA, but any word on what VT is doing for practices/senior day? I imagine the team's not going to practice since we didn't make a bowl game... we just shutting it down early?

Twitter me

Hopefully we can use the practices to work on things to kick start the spring.

Pretty sure we don't get anymore practices after this weekend. No bowl game no organized practice allowed.

Yea this was my question. Well, another week of recruiting and traveling to high schools for coach pry

Twitter me

Technically, the final week of the regular season is championship weekend. If we weren't in a conference with a championship game, we might have a regular game scheduled. Are teams allowed to practice through the end of that week, even if they don't play?

Nope only if they made a conference championship or bowl game.

Seems like an odd rule.

Don't the teams who DIDN'T make it to a bowl game need even more practice?

It's part of the "privilege" of getting to a bowl game.

The rich get richer.

Same as it ever was, as long as the rich make the rules.

Though I feel certain that it's out of concern for the student athletes.

VT has gotten the longest end of that stick.

It hasn't really hurt VT too much, it's true.

Yeah I don't think we get anything, but double up monday/Tuesday then let the team leave for Thanksgiving. But every little bit helps and we need it, if only film room or whatever. Let the seniors watch the rest practice or something.

Maybe do senior day before a basketball game too.

I hate to even bring this up in the grand scheme of things but I have to imagine losing a home game in a year where we only had 6 home games scheduled will have a major financial impact on the athletic budget. Is there a possibility that the ACC will change future scheduling around to have UVa@VT again next year?

There would be too much of a ripple effect. Right now, the ACC has the opponents for 2023-2026 already planned out with the new divisionless model. Flipping UVA/VT next year would mean they would at least have to flip 2024 as well, if not all four years. But then that would make each team have an unbalanced home and away conference schedule.

UVA only has 6 home games scheduled for next year anyway, because they go to Maryland and have a neutral game against Tennessee.

Not to mention, it would be pretty asinine to take a home game away from them after what they're going through.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

This may sound callous - but I have to wonder if it was a home game for UVa, would they (players, staff, admin) have been more enthusiastic about playing the game? If even a week later?

Given that they already cancelled a home game, what are you basing your opinion on?

UVa cancelled a home game that would have gotten....what, maybe 35,000 people?

Ask yourself hypothetically, if UVa had to forego their home game with VT next year and not have a home game with VT until 2025 - meaning loss of income, a tougher schedule in '23,, and some players only getting 1 rivalry game at home in their career - do you think it may have played out differently in the minds of the UVa admin, coaching staff, and players?

I asked a few people who alums/fans of other schools who don't really follow VT and UVa football (and don't have a dog in the fight) - and they all said they could easily see it playing out differently if UVa were to lose their home game rather than VT.

If we're being completely honest, I don't think some of those considerations go through the minds of the folks in Charlottesville in normal years.

I didn't downvote you but this is a really weird argument to bring up and then to double down on.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Agreed. I'm glad that people that have nothing to do w uva or uva football are perplexed by this, but with all do respect, that means nothing in this case. The game isn't happening. They are suffering. Respect them and the uva community.

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

I doubt the team members who made the decision were thinking about team revenues as their top concern.

We shouldn't, either. We should respect their decision.

I won't downvote you, but you are really banging the drum that UVA cancelled the game, not so they could grieve their murdered teammates, but rather to somehow screw us over financially and that said financial concerns would override their mourning three MURDERED teammates if the financial hit was theirs not ours?

Maybe you should take a step back from the Internet for a minute.

I mean, they already lost a home game, but Coastal Carolina was already booked over the next two weeks. Also, the CCU game was their 7th home game.

I was going to post this in the UVA post game thread, win or lose. Here's to the first season under Pry. I hope it is a building block in the foundation to a great future for the Hokie football program. 3-8 is almost 4-8!

My only complaint is with WHOEVER made the final decision waiting til late Monday to make the call. Made it harder to adjust plans at almost the last minute. Ultimately, it freed me up to spend more time with out of town friends coming in, but wish they had announced last Friday or at the latest Saturday. But 'c'est la vie' ..... at least we get to savor GIFtory and positive momentum for the entirety of the off season.

From the 2018 VT-uva game-"This is when LEGENDS are made!"

I hope and fully expect the football seniors to be honored at a home basketball game before the end of the year. UNC might be a good one to do it at.

Good idea, looks like that is exactly what is happening:

What are the next winning VA lottery numbers?

This is going to be great for the ACC.

As I am not in Virginia, sadly I have no idea.
