ECU just picked up two OL transfers in three days. Reminder to those on here that if we wanted to we could.
Crook just got here so we can give him some time, but if we don't have one OL transfer by the end of summer that should be considered a failure
Do you really want the same players ECU is getting?
Sadly, as far as VT has fallen, maybe. ECU did go 8-5 last year. OL was one of the worst parts of our 3-8 team. And, at this point, is the AAC really that much worse than the ACC - especially the old Coastal Division teams?
Long-term, no, definitely not. But I would not be shocked if many ECU OL players are better than what we had last year and could start to move the needle up short-term. Then long-term, take a further step up.
I didn't think I wanted the players Duke got, but here we are...
In all seriousness, I don't how good/not good the guys ECU got are, but given that we don't have 5th guy we trust on the OL, I think it fair to say that we need someone.
TBF, its been reported that Rudolph doesn't believe in taking OL from the portal and wants to develop guys the old school way. Fingers crossed Crooky is more aware of how modern college football is done
GoKart must have missed this one, so just picking up the slack. ;)
So, are we totally out of it with Westphal? I don't think I've seen anything VT related out of them since Rudolph left.

Jones has done a great job positioning VT with Charlotte area recruits, but VT needs to start winning these battles.
Noticed his recruiter out of Duke is Zohn Burden....
Here's to hoping the Easter Beagle brings us some great recruits. Yeah, I admit it, I really just wanted to post Snoopy.

IMO this is a big one, big-time high school program and a kid who was All-Met last year. A little undersized so possibly under recruited and under evaluated but wouldn't be surprised if his rating gets higher next season.
I feel like this is the type of guy we made a living off of under Wiles. Hopkins brothers come to mind for that height specifically. If this would help in that talent pool from DeMatha, sign me up.
No sauces but I get the good vibes here

89 Rated LB
If he's #1 RHP, why isn't he quarterbacking? That arm has to be good.
and at 6'4" 210 it's not like he's lacking size either... maybe the mechanics of the respective throwing motions interfere with each other?
Maybe he just likes to hit people and if this is the answer I want him.
Also their QB (Tad Hudson) wasn't a slouch he's 6-3 220 .89 committed to UNC
I am glad a guy with the name Tad is headed to UNC.
Although with that name it seems maybe he should have been the linebacker and this kid should have been the QB
My wife had him as a student in middle school and man, you don't even know. He relishes the whole rich kid, star athlete persona. He's a Chad to the max. However, my wife didn't play into it like other people seemed to do and I think he appreciated it. She teaches choir and she didn't care who his dad is or what Tad could do as an athlete, but rather gave him a space to develop another talent and not be judged or held to a perfect standard. So he didn't act like he usually did in her class.
Tad Hudson is the only reason Nesta isn't the QB. Tad had the QB position at Hough HS locked up when he was in 8th grade.
Honestly, if he was my son, I'd be telling him to forget football and focus on baseball. Really bad baseball injury and you blow out your arm or shoulder. How many football players have beaten up and broken bodies and/or concussion syndrome.
It's harder to make big money on baseball. Kyler Murray went football because the money is just so much better.
Kyler Murray went football because the money for a quarterback is just so much better.
The best MLB pre-arbitration deal was Mike Trout at $1mil. All draft picks are on pre arbitration deals. So the best rookie deal ever maxes out at $4 mil for the contract (note: Trout only had a 1 year deal so no one has gotten a 4 year deal like that.) Most players make close to the minimum no matter where they are drafted.
Any position that gets picked as the top pick of the 5th round of the NFL draft recieves a 4 year $3.64 mil deal.
The best ever MLB is worth a mid 4th rounder NFL deal. In the MLB you might be in the minors making less money, while a 4th round LB makes their salary if they ride the bench.
Meanwhile MLB players have guaranteed deals and NFL players largely don't. It's apples to oranges. Mike Trout also signed a 12 year, $426 million dollar deal, only Mahomes has touched that. Wait til you see what Ohtani gets. Aaron Judge is 30 and just signed for 9 years and $360m. NFL gets you paid quicker but MLB gets you paid more + longer.
so what's the ratio of baseball players that go pro to those that actually get those high paying deals? Am I wrong in thinking a ton of them get trapped down in the lower paying minors where their lives are equally upended but the pay sucks? Compare that to football where you get to do your "minor league" time in college and then make an informed decision on going pro after...
the question is what percentage of players choosing between NFL and MLB end up where. Not the overall percentage.
The MiLB is filled with international players that really don't have a lot of better alternatives.
So, guys like Jeff Samardzija vs Russel Wilson. Players that legitimately had a real decision between two sports.
and position has to factor as well -- Jeff Samardzija as a WR; Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray, and Jameis Winston as QB etc
And in the case of Nesta, MLB SP > NFL LB...
Injury wise, LB hurts for the rest of your life; SP results in a rubber arm with prosthetic tendons. SP probably better.
But still being in HS, the likelihood he would still be at those positions at a professional level is not very likely.
Yes if you are a star, the MLB will pay you like crazy. If Kyler Murray washed out of the NFL it would take a top pick 5 years until he was cut and he'd making lots of money. If he went MLB and washed out he would get just over a season of NFL pay in bonuses and AAA pay. Doesn't come close.
Most pro players are out of their leagues in a few years, most MLB players never make it past arbitration to make big deals.
because quarterback tho
No because draft #1, if a LB got number 1 pick he'd make that money. You can argue that a LB wouldn't be number one, but for the last 3-4 years the top 24 picks have all be fully guaranteed. Last year a LB was the 22nd pick and has a $15 mil contract and wouldn't have to deal with getting AAA pay.
If you're drafted high enough in MLB, your signing bonus is comparable to the guaranteed amounts for NFL draft picks (at signing vs. over four year contract), but you'll have to ride out that initial team control, unless you buy them out.
Either way, you'd probably just want to go with the sport you enjoy the most, since it's going to be a grind day to day with either one.
https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-draft-2022-bonus-pools-pick-values
Kyler Murray was offered $14m guaranteed by Oakland as a top-10 pick fwiw
Was that signing bonus or contract? IF bonus that would have been the highest for an American player by $4 million! If contract it is only guaranteed if he makes it to the big leagues!
Per this it was $14mil in addition to the the $4.6m signing bonus slot, I'm guessing as a contract. It would have been guaranteed even if he didn't make it to the show. Teams don't have to give players MLB-level contracts until they get to the majors, but they can if they want to. There's just usually no reason to.
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2831573-report-kyler-murray-offered-...
For comparison, Kyler Murray had a $35.7mil fully guaranteed 4 year contract with the Cardinals. That was his rookie contract.
It is also is possible in the MLB to have teams pay different rates in a contract depending on which league the game is in. So that is a 14 mil contract that is "guaranteed" but they don't have to pay him the same rate if he is playing in a AAA game as they would in an MLB game, most contracts support that pay style unless they are a post arbitration contract. It is still up to the team to pay what they want.
This is generally false (depending upon your definition of "big money", I suppose).
I'll bet if you add the income of professional baseball payers (at all levels) and football players (at all levels), baseball would top football - even with football rosters being twice the size. And average income - not close.
https://247sports.com/Player/Zahir-Rainer-46103177/
F - Evan Watkins put in a crystal ball to Minnesota. That's going to be pain
Zahir is the kind of in-state recruit we have to start closing on more times than not. There's no one in his top 7 we shouldn't be able to beat head-to-head, especially for an in-state kid.
Is it weird that if we're going to lose to one of those teams for this recruit I would prefer for it to be Minnesota?
That makes sense to me. When I look at his top schools, though, you've got the crew from the ACC (all within 4 hours of each other) then Minnesota and Stanford. If he ends up at one of the latter two, I'm not sure there will have been much we could have done differently in his recruitment.
Go Hokies!
I would prefer it to be Stanford. IMO Stanford is the best all around experience in the country - you get great athletics, great academics, and (what I believe to be) the best professional network in the country and the most interesting postgrad opportunities. I can totally understand why anyone would go there.
oh no, not this again.
That's not really a controversial take.
I hear Stanford is such a lure that Dax Hollifield won't be on the team next year
With the benefit of hindsight, you have to imagine he would like a do-over. I mean, my goodness. Could you pick a worse 5-year period to come play LB at VT? If you're gonna have 3 losing seasons in 5 years, at least get a Stanford degree out of it, am I right?
Let's hope his recruitment plays out like Cotman's. Commits to out of state mid level P5 early and we stay in his ear and flip him later.
Or just commits to us from the start 😁
Man, we had a CB for him early on. Would love this commit. A loluva legacy committing to Tech would create many hoo tears.
I have no idea if we land him, and Evan is generally correct with his CBs, but there have been a lot of current players and all of our current commits retweeting this telling him to come home. I like how involved the guys are at trying to pull in the recruits
Committed to the Gophers
we're doomed
I definitely wanted Rainer to commit, and he still could later, but we did sign like 5 people who will probably play safety last class.
it's not that we are losing in state kids to freaking Minnesota. Huh? We obviously wanted him since he was offered. Instead he picked a traditional P5 bottom feeder in a state that is 1200 miles from home and with weather that can be described as only pleasant when you are not in school. Not great Bob.
Or maybe a kid who is a UVA legacy couldn't pull the trigger to come to VT and Minnesota was his next best option? No #sauces, but i definitely have some family that wouldn't let their kids (or would make it hard) for them to go to VT even if it was their best option. It's not like he picked one of the carolina schools instead of us.
Minnesota under Fleck has shown the ability to develop talent from mid 3 star to NFL draft level, we don't have that track record. They also are a winning program right now, we are not. Minneapolis is supposed to be a really cool city, and we could be looking at a situation where a kid wanted a city rather than a small town. Lastly, we continue to face the issue of the perception that B1G & SEC schedules are considered cool whereas ACC schedules have you playing in front of half empty stadiums.
fixed for ya
Resorting to criticizing the weather at other schools on a message board for a school in Blacksburg, VA seems a little desperate.
I lived in Blacksburg for 4 years, and also the Twin Cities for an 18-month period spanning two winters. Also, Chicago for five years.
I thought the drillfield @ 7:30 a.m. in winter and Chicago was cold, but the Twin Cities in winter is possibly the coldest place on earth (slight exaggeration...maybe). St. Paul had 'skyways' connecting the buildings downtown so that people didn't have to walk outside in the winter. Yeah, that's a selling point right there..."you don't even have to go outside"!
While the spring and summer weather was nice up there, the black flies and mosquitoes were plentiful and large enough to carry off small children.
I've visited Minneapolis once. In the summer. I was told they have two seasons. Winter and Road Construction.
pretty desperate of you to talk about highway improvement projects when I-95 runs right through the Commonwealth /s
FTFY
That's great, but none of those is remotely San Diego. And that was the point...bragging about being the taller midget is kinda lame.
There's a joke here about not being able to claim being the bigger person if you're gonna be desperate enough to make fun of midgets, but I'm not sure what it is
The joke eludes you because I'm not making fun of midgets. I am just using one very short person bragging about being taller than another very short person (which midgets are) as a metaphor for odd chest-thumping.
But it seems the over-sensitized can see affront in just about anything.
I mean, you're the one who got all bent out of shape over a post (that was clearly a joke) about it being cold in Minneapolis. So who is over-sensitized here?
Beginning to think that every joke ever has eluded you. You're allowed to laugh once in a while, Marc. TKP is supposed to be fun!
Wait, is that how you say his name? This whole time I thought it was "Kevin"
Fun fact: those skyways were built for the Super Bowl in 1992 so that visitors wouldn't have to go outside
Sad fact: that SB was the last one the WFT won
But Dan is gone so we're trending back up again!
TKP. Come for the football content, stay for the midget arguments
Minnesota is interesting. Say what you will about Fleck (and there's a lot to say) but he is a proven winner. Since being at Minnesota (a pretty tough job in 2023), he's gone 5-7, 7-6, 11-2, 3-4 (COVID), 9-4, 9-4, and got 13 guys drafted (11 of those in the last 3 drafts).
If, in 2028 (Pry's 6th season at VT), we had the same trajectory/record, I think most of us would be pretty satisfied with the hire.
It will be interesting to see how Minnesota does in a divisionless B10.
Hey, some of us like the cold and playing in the snow!
Living in the upper Midwest in the winter couldn't be more underrated. When I lived in Madison I spent as much time outside in the winter as I did in the summer. Pond hockey 2 hours a night for 5 nights a week.
man i couldn't even imagine. even NJ winters fire up the SAD for me pretty good at it is
You gotta hit the Vitamin D for seasonal affective disorder. Like take a lot.
The difference between upper Midwest and like NJ, DC, even like Chicago is that the snow doesn't melt and doesn't get slushy. Every day is a snow day with so many outdoor activities to do. And unlike the East Coast, there's no humidity so the cold is somehow less cold even when it's in the teens. You don't get cold as quickly, you just put on layers and either get active or get drinking (why do you think Wisconsin drinks so much?) and after a couple hours you realize you're cold.
I do and even have a therapy lamp lol and it still hits like dump truck full of bricks. i just know the lack of sunlight would absolutely mess with me big time
Ely, MN and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area is one of my top 5 favorite places to be. Dog sledding, snow shoeing and cross country skiing in the winter, hiking and canoeing in the summer. Supposed to be great for fishing too if you are into that.
I had a long conversation with an old Wisconsinite and we were talking about all the great Wisconsin outdoor activities. He was talking about fishing although he said he doesn't do ice fishing except for a time he put a flag up on the ice and watched TV in his cabin by the fire.
Benw you wanna go ice fishing with me next winter? Got place on the UP
I don't fish but yes I actually would be down. Btw do you do any web app builder? I'm having a bug in my pop ups that's really irritating.
EDIT: This one shows dates with commas in some of the table columns but not in the pop -up (as well as having the wrong layer pop up first)
This one puts six decimal points after the number in the pop-up but not in the table.
If we don't land Kelvin Hunter or Noah Jenkins I'm sure we'll make another push for him. If he sticks with Minnesota at that point I'll be concerned.
dang we got big-gophered

My concern with both of the Mt Airy kids is that they are playing 1A ball which is the smallest school level in NC.
This is a reasonable observation. However, some really big-time athletes (players who have turned into big-time athletes) have come from 1A NC football.

This kid is a complete head case. What coach would take him when he just left his 3rd school and committed and decommitted to a 4th?
Have we gotten a follow-up tweet from his handle disclosing what percentage he's at for this decision?
Rumors are that he's approaching 3300%
It's over 9000!
More like Can'Run Kelly, amirite?
Can he, though, really?
It is both mind-boggling and entirely appropriate that they refer to him as a Virginia DB but have to use a picture of him in a UNC uniform.
If the argyle fits, wear it?
At this rate, he will portal back to high school.
Lots of portal entries from TCU today. Two names that stuck out were DE Landyn Watson who was recruited heavily in the '21 class as part of the ill-fated TX2VT push before deciding to stay home, and DB Keontae Jenkins (not to be confused with Keonta Jenkins from the same 2020 recruiting class), who was a 4* out of Frank Cox in 757.

More like Fake Forest right?!?
Yeah, but you got to respect that they got so tired of being stuck amongst the cluster of NCSU, Duke, and UNC that they uprooted the whole university to get away from them. Wake also wanted to get closer to better friends like VT. I think we can all agree that it was a reasonable move.

ESPN(edit: The Athletic) went by compositeYep and back then ESPN was actually a more reputable recruiting service. Their evals were a lot better back then, then 247 put more emphasis on actual scouts and hardly anyone uses ESPN to track recruiting anymore
Curious, because I'm pretty sure Marcus Vick was an UDFA, not a draft pick 🤔

Going head to head with Colorado/Deion will be interesting.
i think the This Is Home message might resonate more with transfers looking for a fresh start or new situation than with some high schoolers. that roster churn in boulder is somethin else. Its nice to think you can capitalize on the opportunity as a player but it's also easy to be the next one out the door.
Definitely, especially for younger recruits who may still have >2 years of eligibility left.
If VT can get VA guys who they missed on years ago to return to VT, it could make us look like the places those guys always should have been, which could make us more attractive to local high school recruits.
In general, it's will be interesting to see how the transfer portal evolves. I think that once additional covid eligibility is exhausted, transfer portal activity is going to level off, and I think preexisting relationships will become more of a factor than they are now.
absolutely. These are guys less than one generation removed from high school. I want as many instances as possible of that guy who is still a local hero telling the kids who look up to him how PedoState or FSU or Bama sidelined him and he found a home at VT.

I know we don't have the Bud staff of old, but these players on the back end that can make plays lived in Lane during my years of VT. Show them what Pry wants to bring back of then and capitalize on that and see we want them to play and get contracts in the league. It may not have the glitz and glamour of Deion, but hard work does pay off. I saw some returns of almost a Hosley type in the limited footage I could watch while working.

I would be very surprised if this he doesn't pick Michigan.
OL transfer Troy Everett with a CB to the good guys this morning
Pry and staff are working hard on recruiting and portal. Let's hope this hard work can be followed up with great coaching and in game decisions. Great job, this staff really works to get better every day.

Our "consultant" is making offers?
We need all the help we can get right now
I like him specifically for the fact he left off "University" when saying he received an "offer to play at Virginia Tech"
In the 70's we went from good old VPI or Virginia Tech to VPI&SU. There was a push to call it "Vippy-sue". My orientation leader used that bastardation all day. Sort of like the push into the twisted VT. I don't get where Virginia Tech University comes from.
things like this is why I hate people
Class of 24, so we are talking about a high school junior that is 6'6" and 315 pounds. My God, what are they feeding this guy?
My guess is "everything."
That's a pretty good film, definitely is a solid P5 recruit
