It's that time of year again. What are you currently watching, do you have any excellent recommendations and have you seen anything that you would warn others to stay away from?

I'll get it started. Because of course, it's why I created the thread.
The Last of Us is fricken fantastic. If you have HBO, watch it and thank me later. If you've played the game, just be in awe of how the show runners remained faithful to it. Shouldn't be surprising as I believe the main game director is helping direct this as well, but it's incredible on how they have not really taken too much artistic liberties so far, and in my opinion it is so much better for it.
I just finished episode 1 and thought it was great. Pedro Pascal really nailed it. The entire opening sequence in Texas was just as thrilling and impactful as I remember it from the game.
Planning on watching episode 1 tonight and can't wait!
I never played the game but I watched episode one and I'm all in on the series already.
Have been considering DLing the game and playing that, at least until a few episodes are out. Should I do that, or just watch the TV show first. Thoughts?
TLOU is my all-time favorite game franchise and it's not close. I haven't started watching the show yet so can't say what you should do first, but IMO the game is amazing and so my answer is "yes, you should play the game".
If the show continues the path it took in the first episode, this is one of the rare occasions where it might not matter. Obviously, the game is fantastic and if you can get the current gen remaster (the one specifically for PS5) then you should play it, but I don't think you'll get much of a different experience going with one over the other.
So the wife and I started watching the show last night. Got about ten minutes into the "20 years later" part, and had to wrap it up, but damn, the feels from the beginning.
The show looks fantastic, and I'm already impressed even though I'm only a little bit through it. But it's really gonna suck waiting week-to-week for this.
So I'm putting the show back on pause, and definitely firing up the game tonight. I'll play that for a while until there is a decently bingeable amount of episodes to watch. Should've followed this path in the first place, but I gotta say I loved what I saw so far.
so just a warning. The second episode, while it follows the story well, it is pulling from a few different locations that are spread out over the first few hours of the game. Its not detracting from the story at all, but its definitely deviating a little bit from the almost scene for scene recreation of the pilot.
Ep 2 spoiler without context
I should not have checked this while on video on a work call....
I saw a spoiler-free review that talked about how the show writers were able to add some more backstory to some characters that wasn't able to be done in the game, so I figure that there is going to be plenty that is added vs changed. It also mentioned that there were some changes made due to the nature of the storytelling medium, but they weren't major changes and they didn't take away from the storyline. I'm good with stuff like that.
Finished playing part 1 yesterday afternoon and watched the first episode last night. Fucking bravo. Amazing adaptation, sticks to the source material and I love it. Can't wait for more episodes
.. Also downloaded part 2 and I'll start that later today.
The show "Power" is one of my all time favorites. It also has spin off series "Ghost: Power Book III - Raising Kanan" which is also good.
Emancipation. Watch it.
I just finished Willow and it was... ok.
Felt like it didn't really exist in the same world as the movie. The language was too anachronistic to the original. I wish the music had used more of the Williams score, but the end credits songs grew on me a bit.
There were elements that looked like they could have been really excellent but the whole thing felt like it need a little more polish in the writing department.
With the original being one of my favorite childhood movies, I was thoroughly unimpressed. It was way too campy, the plot was everywhere, there were a ton of inconsistencies, and it just felt disjointed. There were a few scenes where I really had to look away from the tv. It could have been great, but it went downhill from the first episode IMHO. It looked like something a couple of first year film students threw together. Shame.
In my case it introduced me to the original - didn't even know it was a thing, I think it was just before my time. So as "bad" as the movie is I appreciated being introduced to some campy fantasy
Last week I watched The Pale Blue Eye which stars Christian Bale and was (I think) a Netflix original. Not bad if you enjoy mystery movies, but the second half wasn't my favorite mainly due to the plot. Harry Melling (aka Harry Potter's annoying cousin lol) costars and does a great job as well playing Edgar Allen Poe.
Always will recommend Dark even though the series ended in 2021
This is near the top of my "to watch" list because I've heard great things.
I loved Dark, and the Netflix series 1899 was also really good. Same producers
1899 already canx'd. :/
I don't do a lot of tv but I've been watching Reacher here lately. It's amusing and passes the time for these cold days.
Is season 2 out yet? I enjoyed season 1.
Having read all the Reacher books over the years, I had my doubts about the show, but ended up loving it. Reacher is too iconic of a character to be played by just anyone, but they nailed it. While sometimes good characters can be spoiled by the wrong actor playing them, it worked well in this case.
Sometimes good actors can pull off the disconnect from the book character, think Jack Nicholson in "One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest" playing a very large, red haired Irish brawler Randle Patrick McMurphy, or even Lou Diamond Phillips playing very large ex football player Henry Standing Bear in "Longmire".
I look forward to season 2 of Reacher, it's light fare but entertaining.
Now, I'm looking forward to the new iteration of Justified. Watching the first episode tonight and just hoping it can even hold a candle to the original show, still one of the best tv series I've ever seen.
Well, color me supremely disappointed in the new Justified story. None of the lyrical witticism of the original, so far the characters are uninspired and his daughter who plays his daughter, well, if you can't say anything nice...
Hoping the first two episodes were outlyers, but then again, the bar for Justified is set at the highest rung and Detroit just isn't as fun to watch as Harlan County was.
Oh well, can't have everything, I guess.
The dialogue definitely took a hit, and that almost certainly because Elmore Leonard isn't around to help adapt the screenplay. Feels like it's trying too hard.
I also don't like his kid. She brings nothing to the table. Woulda rather seen Natalie Zea back.
A ton of Leonard's books were centered on Detroit, but his best stuff was Florida. If Out of Sight and Jackie Brown (based on Rum Punch) didn't exist, they'd have been more fun options for a Justified revival.
Yeah turned it off without finishing the second episode. Just too choppy and the lack of connection between him and the cops and any historical connection to the "bad guy" really made it tough to watch.
Dam, he was so good I didn't even realize it.
Yeah, good actor in a good part and if you'd never read the books, he fits in just right. I wouldn't have had it any other way, though, and enjoyed the series immensely.
Grogu throwing hands now. This is the way.
I just wanna know who's on the other side of the door when it shows all the Jedi in the hallway.
I think there is a decent chance that it's (pre toasted) Vader and the 501st
Darksaber. Hell Yeah.!!!
Wednesday, the series based on the Addams family, was well cast and well done.
Great family-friendly series. I liked it, wife liked it, etc.
To be clear, you would not want little kids to watch this. However, I do agree that this show was great and my wife and our extended family all loved it
Agree that it's not for little kids, but my 10 year old daughter and 9 year old son loved it. It's honestly a less darker version of Harry Potter.
The show was great. The soundtrack was great. I didn't expect much when my daughter asked me to watch it and I ended up loving it as well. We rewatched it with the grandparents when we were back east for Christmas and my mom still talks about it
The Wire is still a correct answer if folks haven't seen it.
Agreed...obviously
Even if you have seen it, if it's been more than a year or two now's a great time to re-binge!
Still the best TV show ever IMO.
Justified begs to differ.
I used to rewatch The Wire every year after March Madness ended since there's not any sports on til fall. Now I have a job/family so that's not really possible, but some time soon I'll fire it up again.
It is the greatest TV show of all time.
Kaleidoscope on Netflix was pretty good. The episodes aren't numbered in sequence, but are labeled a color, and the idea is you can watch in any order. I don't really get the premise, although i can appreciate them trying something different. But after watching it, I think it would be best to watch in chronological order. Something like that would probably work better if each episode was from a different character's viewpoint, kind of like The Affair on Showtime.
The Peripheral on amazon is pretty good, I am only 3 episodes in, and not a very big sci-fi fan, but I think it was really well done, and look forward to finishing it.
Jack Ryan season 3 was good, just as entertaining as previous seasons. i'd recommend it. it's a quick watch.
The Recruit on netflix was great, really entertaining, hopefully there are a few more seasons coming.
I watch a lot of foreign shows on netflix, and season 4 of Fauda comes out soon. Fauda is really well done, if you like spy/thriller type movies/shows, you would love Fauda. It's about Israel/Palestine, won't get into the politics here, but I believe one of the creators or writers used to be Israeli special forces. I highly recommend it.
I really enjoyed the Peripheral. So much so that the book is my next read after I finish Tress of the Emerald Sea. The end of the season feels a little rushed, but still a great watch.
If you liked the Peripheral, I also recommend Travellers on Netflix. They have a similar vibe I think even though the stories are very different.
I need to read this novel as well, and I also really enjoyed the show. William Gibson is an excellent Sci-Fi writer (I mostly read all Sci-Fi, yeah I'm a nerd but I am in good company here). His classic 80's novel Neuromancer pretty much coined the term "cyberpunk" and was way ahead of its time.
If you haven't seen The Menu on
NetflixHBO, its worth a watch. I'm intrigued with everyone's reactions on what you think the movie is actually a satire of. My wife and I had an enjoyable mini-debate about the movie after.Do you mean the horror-ish movie on HBO? If so, I loved it. I think it pretty perfectly satirizes all elements of foodie culture, from chef to fanboy.
I didn't like the actual movie as much as I liked the previews.Love the concept, Like the cast, but the finished product left me a little disappointed.Definitely not for everyone, I expected "over the top", but it turns out to be a so completely farfetched that it lost me. I stuck with it until the end more from obligation than curiosity. It absolutely skewered foodie culture and exclusive restaurants, and did a decent job of that.
Edit: OK, I watched it again. My review is a bit harder on it than it should have been. The parts I found off-putting are sort of necessary. It's worth a watch. My favorite bit was the first 40 minutes of satirizing foodie culture and the wealthy, but the over-the-top remainder of it is truly necessary to make it work, really. Overall, I'll give it a 4/5.
I liked it, I could tell it blasted foodie culture but the satirical references to working inthe kitchen were over my head until I read a few reddit posts on the movie lol
I thought it was pretty great. Lots of deep and thoughtful social commentaries, the core one being to ignore what the health experts tell you, cheeseburgers are good for you
I thought it was pretty great. Lots of deep and thoughtful social commentaries, the core one being to ignore what the foodies
health expertstell you, cheeseburgers are the ultimate gourmet meal and will help you live longergood for youFIFY
I haven't seen this movie. I know very little about it. I don't even know that I want to see it.
But after being in India for three weeks, I need a cheeseburger in the worst way. Oh God, do I want a cheeseburger.
Sometimes a cheeseburger is absolutely the right call.
And the cheeseburger Chef makes looks incredible
Bullet Train is on Netflix, and very much worth a watch. If Guy Richie and Tarantino made a movie together, it would be the result.
Belfast has been on HBO for a bit but I finally got around to watching it. Not exactly a black comedy, but it's funny in the same way as Jojo Rabbit from a few years ago.
Banshees of Inisherin was honestly pretty disappointing. It goes out of its way to be an artsy indie film, and has none of the humor or fun of In Bruges. It is an objectively great movie, but it's not really a fun watch.
I loved Banshees. It was among my favorite films of 2022 alongside RRR, Crimes of the Future, Babylon, Ambulance, TG:M and Dark Glasses.
Wife and I were so looking forward to Banshees, and profoundly disappointed in the film. Gratuitously "artsy" and too dark to enjoy. Yeah, the actors were good at their craft, but the film was pointless to me.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Tina Fey stars as an embedded reporter in Afghanistan. Sprinkled with off the wall humor. I think it was on prime. The title describes it all.
excited for mando and love how the new season of The Bad Batch has started
Emily the Criminal.
Audrey Plaza finds a way to pay off her student debt that reveals her true strength.
A little gritty, not too deep, but worth the 1.5 hour run time.
Aubrey Plaza? Yes please. I will need to check this one out.
She shows a bit of edge in this movie.
I've never played Last of Us, but I'm familiar enough with the premise and story. I was absolutely gripped by that first episode.
That entire sequence getting out of Austin was amazing directing and acting.
It's *almost* an exact re-creation of the game. I love games/movies/shows with an immediate hook, and TLOU definitely delivers.
I actually watched Clam Bake last night. LMAO.
Elvis for the win?
I watched Maverick this past weekend.
Yes, its gives a ton of fan service to original movie. Regardless...that was a fun watch.
Mel Gibson and James Garner classic.
At least one person got it.
I love that movie for 3 reasons:
1: Top Gun, duh.
2: I'm in the B-Roll footage they used for the intro.
3: My current gig is teaching new Navy Intel officers about aviation intelligence, and I reference the movie constantly because it gets so much wrong in silly, nitpicky ways that it makes it easier to understand what right looks like.
Paging king james for the spreadsheet. We got ourselves a movie star here!
Would love to hear some of the silly, nitpicky things they get wrong. Just the unclassified ones, of course. ;^)
And what year HT were you? 93 here. MM
'14. Off the top of my head:
1. Mav would have been forced into retirement after not selecting for Admiral two times.
2. Mav could not possibly have survived ejecting at that speed and altitude doing the test flight.
3. Riding motorcycle through entry control point without a helmet, and doesn't stop to show his ID.
4. Top Gun is in Fallon, NV. There are no jets stationed at North Island, that's where the west coast helos are.
5. The officers club is owned by a civilian, and possibly off base. The few O clubs left are on base, owned by the government. (Though the vibe from that scene almost perfectly captures what an O club is like).
6. Fanboy is a backseater. His squadron patch and nametag are from VFA-143, a single seat squadron.
7. Bob is at best a second tour LT, yet somehow has three Navy Commendation Medals (usually an end of tour award for more senior LTs or LCDRs.
8. When playing football, they use the forward pass.
9. The "highly classified" brief on the target takes place in a wide open hangar bay. This would get people fired and maybe put in jail.
10. The mission brief on the boat takes place in the hangar bay, with a bunch of maintainers present. Again, major security violation.
11. Hangman's jet on the carrier has 501 as its tail number, meaning it's a Growler rather than a Superhornet.
12. We are repeatedly told that the enemy has advanced RF SAMs, meaning they are RADAR guided. No RADARs are apparent on the mountain, and the pilots repeatedly launch flares to defeat them. Flares are for IR guided
missiles. Chaff is for RF, but doesn't look sexy on screen.
Were they using pre-1906 rules?
Something I noticed as well, as I work in a SCIF.
Good stuff, though. Wife and I love pointing out continuity errors to each other in film/TV. While I wouldn't have noticed most of these, they're good to know. Maybe I'll call some of them out to her.
Number 8 is just a dumb joke about Navy football. Mav's maintenance officer is even wearing an academy jersey, but somehow both teams are playing a beach version of the air raid.
Maybe they're just scratching an itch they couldn't scratch in school.
It's Carolina rules, similar to VT intermurals.
I can't remember ever seeing an accurately portrayed SCIF in any media. They always have windows with no blinds or the fanciest TVs. Have they never been to a real SCIF with a "flat" screen TV that is 8" thick and can hear the room. Maybe at a contractor site the have fancier stuff (but most dont) but not government sites
Ep 2 of The Last of Us was excellent. I never played the games so at least I get surprised by the twists. I'm guessing those of you that have played the game already knew how that episode was going to end.
SAS Rogue Heroes on Epix is a must watch. It tells a slightly comedic but truthful version of the founding of the SAS in Egypt/northern Africa during WWII and has plenty of action
"Who Dares Wins"
I'm a big fan of comedy and am hoping The Machine movie based off the Bert Kreischer story is good.
Edit: Comes out Memorial Day weekend in theaters. Forgot to add that part.
Dudes stand up is for sure worth a watch.
He is absolutely hilarious.
So some one said I was a machine in my performance review this year and all I could think about was this and hopefully the comment was meant in a good way and not that I party with Russian mafi.
The entire "The Machine" bit is hilarious no matter times you listen to it. He and Tom Segura are my two favorites right now. I've been able to see Segura live twice and he kills it
I like listening to so much of their podcasting stuff in addition to their comedy. I could listen to Segura and BK specials on repeat during work and laugh all day I feel like.
Wait, what? A movie based of BK's The Machine? How did I miss this?
Can't wait to see it. One of the funniest standup routines I've ever seen. Love how he does some of the accents in his delivery.
Yep. He even leaked one of the trailers himself when they finished Sober October on Rogan. He is a wild individual. Funny as hell and I'm hoping the movie lives up to the anticipation I have for it.
The red band trailer is treated like a very serious "origin story"/John Wick vibe.
And then it just goes completely off the rails at the end...
Started Ozark a couple weeks ago. Almost through the first season. I'm hooked. Seeing Jason Bateman in a serious role is crazy. He's always been a hilarious straight man, but a straight-straight man, damn he's good lol
He is awesome in Ozark. That's a great series!
Agreed. Great series. Really jumped the shark at a certain point, but I enjoyed it overall. The actors were magnificent. Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Julia Garner = scary good.
Julia Garner deserves all the Emmy wins. In her most recent win for S4E07, she has a certain scene and I told myself "Well there's her Emmy right there". Chills!
The show's writing absolutely does jump the shark and becomes really wonky. The show becomes a vessel for Supporting Actress Emmys. Still a worthwhile watch.
I enjoyed it and finished it, but the last season was hard.. You had learned to hate some of the characters badly...
In a move that really shouldn't surprise anyone....
The Last of Us has been picked up for a 2nd season by HBO
Not a big TV person, but I am watching Will Trent on Hulu. It takes place in Atlanta/Georgia, and (at least through the first 3 episodes) they have done a really good job of representing the city and surrounding exurbs (as someone who lives here and not-infrequently has to disrupt my daily activities to get around movie sets, I get really annoyed when movies film here, but are set in NYC or some shit *cough* marvel *cough*). Anyways, it's a detective show about a dyslexic GBI agent. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it's a fun, easy, watch.
I dunno, I thought "The Walking Dead" captured Atlanta pretty well.
Walking dead wasn't bad. There was some romcom on amAzon prime that my wife and I watched, and they're jogging through Piedmont Park (a place I would go almost daily 2 years) and they called it Central Park. I was so triggered.
I just had a chance for a free night and a friend and I watched The Menu on HBO Max.
One of my favorite movies in the last year or more. It's definitely not for everyone, but if you are looking for a good thriller with a strong cast and really tight (and funny) script, you should like it. If you are a "foodie" even a little bit you should like it. I liked it a lot more than The Glass Onion (and I thought Knives Out was really good)
Also, if you don't know anything about the movie or it's plot, you will enjoy it even more. One of those "what in the actual F* just happened!?" kind of films
Slow Horses on Apple is absolutely fantastic. Might be my favorite role that Gary Oldman has ever played, he's so darn good
Part way thru. He is fantastic in this role. I'm a huge British spy fan, and huge Bond fan. While not exactly the same, it's a great watch.
Looking forward to seeing the ESPN film "Gr8tness" about Alex Ovechkin.
Epix is now MGM+ for those looking
Binging Billions now on Prime / Showtime. It's brutal. Everyone is shafting everyone else. Nonstop! Still can't decide if Maggie Siff (Wendy)is qualified.
Fantastic show. Lotta ups and downs. Unlike Succession, there are actually likable characters.
Downside, Showtime is trying to milk it like they did with Homeland, and kept it going past when they should have.
Oh, she's qualified enough.
But she's no Malin Ackerman.
Ok so TLOU episode 3 diverges very severely from the game in some major ways....
But
It makes sense in a show rather than a singular focused game and it is so unbelievably better for it.
This show is going to win multiple Emmys this year. Guaranteed.
I don't know anything about the video game. I watched episodes 2 and 3. The show stands on it's own, without any prior knowledge.
It's a very well-done show. No complaints. And now they've checked all the appropriate boxes to clear the way for awards, showing THEY know how to play the game. Entertaining, and socially aware = awards. They're hitting it out of the park.
You nailed it. TLOU on HBO is designed to be a show watched by a lot of people that have never played a second of the game (like me for example)
With that said...episode 3 might have been one of my favorite episodes of television in the last year. It doesn't hurt that I love Nick Offerman (and for those that haven't seen The White Lotus, it's worth watching for Murray Bartlett alone) but it was a great self contained story that also mirrored many of the themes of the bigger picture of what this game/show is about.
Also:
"The government are all Nazis!!!"
"Well yeah now, but not then"
I was laughing heartily at that
It helps, A LOT, that Neil Druckmann is a show-runner for HBO on this. Having the main game designer this involved with the show helps keep the story intact when they need to make it more cinematic for a viewing, and not playing, audience.
I was excited for last night's episode because I loved that entire segment in the game. What they did last night in the show was completely different, and it punched so much differently than the game, and in my opinion, it was better than the game. But I also understand you can't tell that kind of story in the game where you're following one character throughout. But knowing this came from Druckmann, it makes what happens in the game a little more heavy as well. It was just phenomenal, and I can't wait to see what they do in some of the future episodes.
Not sure who down voted you buy I up voted to correct.
Me after this episode:
343i came out and said that TLOU really raised the bar, and all I could think is no, no you set the bar so fucking low that you couldn't avoid tripping on it. The Witcher show runners should be ashamed at themselves too.
Druckmann tweet after episode 3 was classic

The companion podcast with Druckmann and Mazin is a pretty good listen too.

Extremely welcome news this morning. Anything James May does is fantastic, and the Our Man In _____ series is no exception
I am sorry that COVID canceled "Our man in America". I would have been interested to try and see him cover the US. North to South, East to West, do you include Hawaii or Alaska?
This is the less cool zombie show these days, but I just finished the last season of The Walking Dead on Netflix. I enjoyed it; it definitely wasn't on par with the early seasons but I thought it wrapped up things pretty well which was always going to be hard for a show like that.
Curious if anybody else finished it out and what they thought. I know a lot of people lost interest around seasons 7/8, myself included, but the last few seasons brought me back in.
I was a hardcore early fan of the show but I have not watched the last several seasons. The point where the show "jumped the shark" for me was when the strung a cable between two cars on either side of the highway and decapitated a hoard of zombies. Ridiculous.
I've been super casually watching the last season lol. Honestly can't even remember what episode I'm on (somewhere in that 8-10 range), but I hated how they split the last season up into 3 different chunks. I've found that the more leading actors depart, the more I've grown to dislike the show. Everything since the Whisperers has been pretty bad IMO. I'm hoping this last season turns it around though!
If you have a genuine interest in history, and also complete absurdity, watch "Cunk on Earth" on Netflix.
It's nuts. I have not seen a comedian keep such a straight face sine Borat, nor actual experts play along.
I watched the first episode last night. A handful of the jokes didn't land but other times I was laughing out loud. Going to continue watching!
On your recommendation, my wife and I watched this.
We thought it was good fun, and some bits were hilarious. I thought some of the funnier parts were the academics playing along and not batting an eye at times. Or being downright taken back. Either way is funny.
On my list, looks pretty damn funny
Honestly, this looks way better than whatever Chris Pratt is putting out.
That's a pretty low bar.
The funny thing is, up until they pushed the parody completely over the edge, there actually might be a concept there worth exploring.
A MadMax take on Mario Kart? I'd watch it
Why did this snag a downvote? (upvoted to offset and cause its a damn good idea!)
Alum has a stalker who just systematically downvotes everything to -1. Idk if there's an straightforward way for Joe to determine who
Looking at the leg leaderboard...I think I see the top three suspects trying to close the gap
My downvotes are -200 so you know it's not me 😇
I binged Station 11 on HBO Max over the weekend (it was a Max Original show). I thought it was really good. Hits a bit close to home with the pandemic hitting in 2020 (although this one had a 1 in 1000 survival rate so pretty much everyone died).
I thought the show was well done.
I thought it was a really interesting take on the post apocalypse. Definitely a different type of show.
The "heroes" were easy to root for, and even the "villains" are not cartoonishly evil like tends to happen in shows on the subject. The style of the storytelling and timelines took some getting used to, but it satisfying as things started falling into place.
Really disappointed in Disney's show continuation of the Willow story. Just a shotgun blast that left a lot to be desired.
Accused recently came out in the US I think 3 episodes are out now on Fox.
Awesome show really gets you thinking works in a suspenseful timeline or a court case where you initially learn who is the defendant but not exactly what they did. Proceeds to lets you draw conclusions on what information you have then proceeds to give you information that may or may not change your mind, walks a lot of moral/legal lines in the first couple episodes that I've seen. Each episode is independent but they actually pull in some really good actors (Rachel Bilson, Megan Boone, Michael Chiklis, ect) for each episode I've seen .
Wife and I watched an episode a few weeks ago. It was good and I keep meaning to look up the day and time to watch it again. I may look into binging it somehow. Keeps your mind going and really got me hooked into staying up on the one we saw.
I'm 2 episodes in on 100 Foot Wave on HBO Max, documentary following Garrett McNamara and some other big wave surfers; so far focused on Nazare in Portugal....I've been surfing since I was in middle school, and I can honestly say I cannot understand how anyone could see that wave and say "yeah, I'm gonna ride that". This show looks like it is giving a glimpse into their mindset. Amazing show, nonetheless
Record breaking surf here, insane:
If surfing were your thing, how could you NOT ride it?
I've never quite understood surfing. I mean, how does it end?
That was exactly where my brain went when I read the "...how does it end?" line. Leg.
Big wave surfers are a different breed, lol.
If I wipe out on the size waves I typically ride, I might go through the spin cycle a little bit...but the chances of me dying are waaaaaay less than these lunatics
For those who haven't heard-- Last of Us is dropping episode 5 on Friday rather than Sunday to avoid competing with the Super Bowl.
We just finished watching season 3 of Trying on Apple TV and it's an amazing show. We're going through the foster to adopt process right now and they did a great job of capturing some of the frustrations and emotions. But it's a really funny show as well, one of the best we've watched in awhile.
Watched "This Place Rules" last night on HBOmax, and holy smokes, I was not prepared for what I was about to watch
Somebody I Used to Know. Juuuuuuuuuuust trust me.
Edit: I guess none of y'all appreciate Alison Brie frolicking butt ass nekkid. 🤔
I don't even know you guys anymore. 😥
Was not ready for the ending...
Who was? 'Twas a sight to behold.
You had me at Alison Brie.
Frolicking, butt, and nekkid, are all positive qualifiers in convincing me to seek this out.
Please be available on a service I already subscribe to...
Edit: Prime Video: SCORE!!!!
You, sir, are welcome.
Anyone else watching Shrinking on Apple TV? Great 30 min comedy.
Watched a few episodes. Good watch so far.
I'm absolutely loving this show!!!!

As I've mentioned, I never played Last of Us, so I don't know the story and what's different. But I am loving this show!
Episode 5 was great. The infected horde at the end and that whole scene was awesome
Episode 5 was one of the best episodes of any TV show that I've seen. They are staying quite true to the game so far. The only times they have made changes from the source material it has only made the story better.
I thought cutting cable was supposed to save us money.
But it seems that really good shows are getting distributed among the various options, meaning that though I subscribe to Netflix and Amazon Prime, and I'm not watching anywhere near their full range of options, I feel that I'm missing out when the other options have hits.
I used to subscribe to Hulu live, but because they are absolutely tedious about location services, and that isn't a good fit with my lifestyle, I had to let them go.
I cut the netflix. Will probably restart it about a month a year, binge watch what I want, and turn it off again.
It still is saving me money. YoutubeTV + all my subs for movies is still way less than what I was paying for cable for a similar sports package access, particularly once you get past the introductory rate with cable. Additionally, I would still have to pay for all my subs for movies whether I had cable or not. Cable wouldn't give me access to those movie libraries.
Obviously, it has been shifting upward though. The more services break off from each other and start their own thing raises that total price back up steadily. At the moment though, I still don't miss Cable at all.
I swore I posted on this previously, but can't find it... I must be losing it.
Anyway, cutting the cord will likely save you money in the short term, but for the average consumer the long-term costs aren't likely to improve. Why?
Over the course of a generation, we will have completely changed the way that viewers consume TV services (time-shifted+streamed vs. linear+DVR). But despite what attracted early adopters, once the media companies bought in, the focus shifted from cost savings to solidifying control over distribution channels, cutting out the middlemen wherever possible. To be fair, there are definitely benefits to the consumer, but they're largely centered around convenience: time-shifting of content, multi-screen support, outside-of-home access, and the elimination of in-home equipment, to name a few. Cost savings, if any, are a byproduct.
That's not to say that there aren't ways to save money. Savvy consumers will do things like turn on a streaming service to binge a popular show, then turn it off again until the next season is released. Others might be willing to live with only specific streaming services; for example, Netflix or ESPN. But the vast majority of consumers want convenience and lots of options, so they'll end up paying $50+/mo for Internet, $75+/mo for a primary streaming service like YTTV or Hulu, and an extra $50+/mo for a collection of a la carte streaming services (Netflix, Discovery+, Paramount+, HBO, etc), not to mention a share of their annual Amazon Prime bill. Add it all up and I doubt they'll be saving much, if anything.
I love discussing TV/Streaming futures. It's fascinating to me in so many ways.
I think it really depends on if you're a family or an individual. If you're a bachelor living by yourself, it's definitely cheaper to stream. If you're a family of four, and the dad wants to watch sports, the wife wants to watch bravo, the kids watch a combination of disney, nickelodeon, and stuff on youtube... it will add up fast.
I think we have just about every streaming service and live sports with Hulu and its still like $50 a month less than cable was.
Damn how much is cable? Are you getting streaming services with commercials or no?
Cable was like $220 when we dropped it.
Hulu has vlsome commercials for recorded stuff but not like live TV does, the rest don't
God damn, i haven't had cable in a while, but YouTubeTV is $70 with the extras we get. $200 seems insane
I pay $60 for shitty dsl and over $215 for direct tv, with very little in the way of upgrades. Upgraded enough to get ESPN u and accn. We have started streaming and are about to kill the dish.
Mine was over $200 as well as soon as the intro rate dropped off. Had to do that package to get the same sports channels I get on YTTV now for $70.
I'm paying for YTTV with the 4k streaming, and along with Prime, HBO, Paramount+, Disney/ESPN and Hulu, its still cheaper than what I was paying for with Spectrum + HBO.
And the kicker is that cable doesn't really give you any benefits anymore, so you would still need Prime, HBO, Paramount+, Hulu, Netflix, Disney etc to watch most of the best stuff that is being released nowadays.
Damn, that's wild. I guess I haven't had cable in... 8 years? And in the 8 years prior to that, I never lived in one apartment long enough to make it past the intro rate drop off.
It blew my mind a little bit as well. Did that for a few years but as soon as YTTV presented itself as a viable option it was the easiest decision I've ever made.
The other part of it that hasn't changed for me is that I'm buying all those different services in either scenario. I typically watch 200+ movies a year, so I'm gonna have HBO Max, Shudder, Prime, etc. whether I have cable or not. That decision is almost exclusively for sports, and at the moment cable is still WAY more expensive than any of the streaming options.
Yeah we haven't had cable since Hulu became viable to watch college sports.
Poker Face has been a good watch on Peacock (although the most recent episode was weak). Murder mystery dramedy from Rian Johnson, director of Knives Out.
I am hoping to start Full Swing on Netflix with the wife tonight.
For those, like me, who have been disappointed in new Trek recently; The first episode of Picard S3 was straight up awesome. Hopefully it holds.
I finally got around to watching "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" last night on Showtime. Interesting movie but I didn't really understand why it got the huge amount of attention it did. I'd put it at a solid 7/10.
Agreed. Aside from Ke Huy Quan (AKA Short Round), who I thought was awesome, and a few of the action scenes, I was pretty underwhelmed by this.
I watched the first 3 episodes of the new Netfilx golf series last night. So far I'm liking it, pretty interesting with all of the LIV stuff.
Wu Tang season 3 has come out on Hulu, first 5 episodes available now I think
Just binge watched first season of Will Trent on Hulu over two nights. It's like Monk meets more serious crime/setting. It was definitely worth the watch.
Ignore the negative reviews and RT spamming, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is pretty darn good. Best Marvel movie since Endgame.
I enjoyed it. A much better movie that Love and Thunder, it did a great job of balancing the zany with a lot of heart. My biggest gripe is that all the side characters were kind of thin enough to barely be memorable. It was nice to see Jimmy Woo back even if only for a moment . William Jackson Harper is amazing in everything I've seen him in and I wish he had a bigger part.
I also enjoy that now Wheaton's Law is cannon to the MCU.
Side note: My brother and I have made it a game to look for our names in the end credits while we wait for the post-credits scene(s). Quantamania marks the second marvel film where I have found myself. I am an Improver Stage hand in this outing following my appearance in End Game (though I don't recall my role there).
Is you're name Phil Trippett, cause if so, you had one job dude
That's a cop out, he let that happen twice, he knew the 2nd time what size job it was.
I don't know what any of this means (though I think I halfway understand the concept of brother). You work for the magic moving picture shows?
> You work for the magic moving picture shows?
Not at all. But I went to school for animation and used to dream of working on animated and VFX heavy films before my career took me in other directions.
Coupled with the fact that my last name is the 3rd most common in the US and my first name is in the top twenty, we figured I had to show up eventually.
Going on coincidental naming alone I have been a professional baseball player/manager, a place kicker for Texas Tech, a TV producer, was kidnapped in Richmond, a cannibal somewhere in the UK, worked on End Game and Quantamania and there were like six of me at VT when I was a freshman (two of us had the same middle initial). I became slightly more unique when I transferred to art school.
I once met a name-doppleganger who shared my birthday (different years though).
I once had a name-doppleganger who was ex-CEO of my company. He was known for throwing elaborate parties. I occasionally caught grief over it.
They accidentally sent me his retirement statement once. Wowza. They never actually sent me any of his checks, though.
yeah, sometimes googling your own name finds some odd things. That one was a bit disturbing. For the kidnap victim one, I had friends texting me to make sure I was ok. Chesapeake isn't that far from Richmond.
Generic name anonymity is nice for job searching though. No one can easily go browsing for my social media history or anything.
creative director for a high fashion brand too
I can remember when Tech roomed James Roberts with James Roberts. They ended up having to go by their middle names.
2nd this. I went in to the movie this weekend having not read any reviews and it was pretty enjoyable. First movie I have seen in the theaters in a while where I didn't nod off at some point. Pacing in the movie was really good, and I enjoyed the tie-ins to the previous movies, however brief they were. I wont say its the BEST movie since End Game, but its definitely one of the better ones since End Game (I enjoyed both of the Spider Man flicks, and Dr. Strange I felt was really well done).
The writing for The Last of Us is so damn good. This most recent episode was gorgeous to watch, but there are no wasted lines or scenes. The opening with the couple in the cabin was perfection, and Ellie and Joel's interaction when she takes up watch when he falls asleep, just great moments
Loved the cinematography this episode.
A little whoopsie by leaving some crew members in the shot in this scene when Joel+Ellie are crossing the bridge (around 13:10)
Last of Us is phenomenal. Just go ahead and give them the Emmys now because its pretty obvious they're going to win a bunch. They're nailing every note they needed to hit with this adaptation and its just been a depressing joy to watch. And this week is the DLC episode? Nice!
Caught the first episode of Picard Season 3, and its a shame that this is the last season because I think they finally hit the right note this show needed from the start. Lots of fan service, but it was just a bunch of little things and not really too much that they beat you over the head with. I'm really excited about this season, and would love them to continue this with a Riker spin-off or something like that. Mixing in more of the mainstays from Voyager or DS9 with new characters to create the next chapter of the ST story that isn't a millennia in the future like Discovery or in the past like Strange New Worlds.
Who would have thought Star Trek fans would want to see Ships and shit and not modern day San Francisco.
I've seen some folks actually complain that Last of Us is just following HBO's "formula" for prestige TV.
And I'm thinking "So what?". The show is fantastic. I love Pascal in pretty much everything, but Bella is stealing the show, just like she did with her GoT scenes.
"So don't tell me I'd be safer with somebody else. The truth is I would just be more scared." I know that's in the game too, but what a freaking line with her delivery.
Imagine complaining that a show that is very carefully following the script of a 10 year old video game is just regurgitating HBO's "formula". Pop culture fanboys and fangirls are the worst.
Lol interesting! I guess their "formula" is just getting good actors + good scripts + nice production budgets + competent directors/writers. Too bad more networks don't follow this formula!
It really doesn't make sense to me. I feel for folks that can't just enjoy something for the sake of enjoying it.
Is it the greatest show I've ever seen? No. Is it one of my favorite shows on TV right now? Resoundingly yes.
Jim Jefferies latest Netflix special, High and Dry, had my wife and I absolutely dying last night. Would recommend any of his specials, as well as his FX show , Legit, which had a lot more heart and soul than I was expecting.
Official trailer just dropped for The Machine:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=h2jZ3qn1d50
Buddy comedy action movie with Bert and Mark Hamill as the dad. Sign me up
Not sure if this should go in the racing thread or not but I binged DTS season 5 over the weekend, and while not bad, it really felt like the gloss over a lot of things. For instance, no mention of the missile strike that happend in Saudi Arabia during race week.
It for sure feels like F1 has a lot of control on what they talk about in the series, which kind of sucks but I get it. The show is really more of a commercial for F1 than a true account of all the politics and everything that goes on behind the scenes.
The reunion tour we've all been waiting for
Finally a worth while movie!
Been on a Hulu kick.
Really recommend Luther. Really makes you think about what is coming next.
Chance with Hugh Laurie is growing on me. Psychiatrist who has his own mental health issues lurking.
The Night Agent on Netflix was really good. If you like Jack Ryan, you'll like this series. Season 2 has already been confirmed...release sometime in 2024.
I liked "The Rig" on Amazon Prime. 6 Episodes, so not too long a watch.
If you enjoy D&D and haven't gone to see the movie yet, you should find some time to do so.
It is a great mix of funny and heartfelt and really feels like the writers' love letter to D&D. Lots of references that players will love and the plans and shenanigans really feel like a game night experience without being too campy.
Also, the trailers did an excellent job of selling the movie without giving the entire plot away.
AppleTV+'s Silo Series, based on the serialized novel WOOL by Hugh Howey, starts on 5 May. Hugh Howey is one of my favorite authors, big in the independent publishing scene, and the WOOL saga is one of his best. A dystopian future set in a 140+ story underground silo, nobody knows why the world outside is toxic or how their ancestors arrived in the silo. The most important rule: Do not ask to go Outside, or you will be sent Outside to clean.
And in finding the Teaser to link, I found out there is a full Trailer, which I have not yet watched. Sucks to find that out while at work. Might have to run out to the car and check my phone....
Reviews are on official embargo until the week before, but one reviewer posted on the Silo Series FB page that she was absolutely blown away by the first season, and can't wait to get her review out. The author posts there regularly and has been hearing really great feedback from reviewers so far, so I'm hoping that this show meets my expectations (which, admittedly, are pretty high).
Since the initial WOOL novel was serialized, Howey has occasionally given away the opening novella for free. If I can find it, I'll post a link here. It's a great intro to the story and doesn't give away too much.
It stars Rebecca Ferguson, right? I have been a huge fan of hers since Mission Impossible. I might have to get Apple TV to watch this.
via GIPHY
Qualified. Peak in Mission Impossible, as well as Dr. Sleep and Greatest Showman.
Anybody watch this last night? Apparently it was up at 10pm-ish. I'd've watched it then, but I'm hosting a watch party next weekend, and promised I'd hold off until then. (I'll still probably watch it on the sly, though.)
Reviews have been off the charts, FWIW.
Finally bought the 5th season (first half only) of Yellowstone. It's not up to snuff for me.
Finished Daisey Jones and the Six. Seems to mimic the story of Fleetwood Mac. It's only 6 episodes and the original music sucks. You may want to watch anyway because the end has a huge twist and will rip your heart out.
If any of you guys watch Dave on FXX/Hulu...episode 2 of this new season is one of the more brilliantly filmed episodes of television I've ever watched.
I mean it was damn funny, but the actual direction of the episode was insane.
I know it has been refreshing with Series like Andor and Mandalorian not having much Jedi and Light saber duels, but I am ready for this shit right here.
Trying hard not to get my hopes up here, but this seems to hit all the right notes.
Unfortunately seems like it may also be the end of the franchise. Disney seems to have killed off the idea of doing a TV series and does not appear to have plans for another movie.
Honestly - I'm okay with that. Some things don't need 10+ movies or reboots. Let classics stay as classics.
Harrison Ford IS Indiana Jones.... It would be tough to continue without him, but I think there are some actors in Hollywood today that could potentially pull it off. Chris Pratt, Chris Pine, and Tom Holland are a few that come to mind. Pratt/Pine to pick things up right before/after the timing of The Last Crusade, and Holland somewhere preceding Raiders.
Tom Holland?!? Though I agree with your first point. Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones. No need to continue it after him.
Maybe he meant Tom Hardy?
Ooooh nvm. After rereading his post I think he's thinking of a young Indy. I could see that
Agreed. But you know Hollywood. They'll milk a cash cow until it's dead. And then they'll milk it some more.
Yes, younger Indy. Not quite as young to relight the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles stuff, but the material in between Young Indy and Raiders. and I would love it if they gave the Fate of Atlantis a Hollywood script
Dude...Fate of Atlantis. What a pull
To this day I still have most of the SCUMM games from LucasArts on my phone. They released some bangers. I'd watch a Grim Fandango movie
Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, Full Throttle, The Dig, Monkey Island... any one of those could be a movie.
Maniac Mansion was my first adventure game. I have DoTT, Full Throttle, all the Monkey Island games, Grim Fandango as apps on my phone. The Dig was a seriously good game too. Don't want to turn this into the gaming thread, but I agree the stories for all of them were so good.
If you have told 10-15 year old me that would possible I would have not believed it.
Ok. Let me reel this back in (a bit)...
Given Disney's recent track record of one- off stories like Solo, how about...
Marcus: An Indiana Jones story
Staring Martin Freeman
glad you brought this up. I immediately thought of this scene...and then, subsequently, the scene you quoted
Giphy failed me in finding any Marcus Brody gifs
That's how good he is. He can even disappear on the internet.
If they put it together like the Peter Sellers Pink Panther movies, it would make 300 million.
I never could get the hang of Thursdays
Will likely be the last of the series for Harrison Ford. He MADE the franchise. Though I'm sure in time they'll revive it with someone else.
I agree with Alum AND Pailholder. I hope they made this movie worth the wait.
I really hope they can spin off a "Young Indiana Jones" series of films, at least for Disney+. The old series w/ Sean Patrick Flannery was solid. I still remember watching the Transylvania episode back in the day haha it was scary stuff for young me
It honestly looks like exactly the kind of movie you want to just go to see in the theatre and enjoy yourself.
Mads Mikkelsen and Phoebe Waller-Bridge are always worth a watch, not to mention all the other cameos they have shown and I'm sure are in there.
I'll go see it. And if it's the last Indy film, that's perfectly fine. Not everything we love has to go on forever to be remembered fondly. (I'm looking at you Beamer Ball...I just made myself sad)
Critics be damned, the Super Mario Bros. Movie was great fun and phenomenal fan service. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommend if you grew up playing the Mario games
Nostalgia galore. What I will give them a lot of credit for is the pacing - there were no lulls during the movie, and for the first time in a while it was a movie that I saw with the kids and I didn't fall asleep. What really got me excited was the soundtrack - Brian Tyler did a fantastic job of paying tribute to the legacy music while bringing a lot of newness.
Just watched TETRIS on Apple TV+. Interesting 'based on a true story' take on early video game business deals.
Not sure how many of you watched The Last Kingdom on Netflix, but the wrap up movie "7 Kings Must Die" came out yesterday. It's a very entertaining close if you enjoyed the show.
Ahh so The Last Kingdom is finished up? That's one I've been waiting on to end for awhile so I can binge it haha. Thanks!
Yea it's done done now. One of my favorite series Netflix has ever had. Uhtred son of Uhtred will become one of your favorite characters.
But it's about a lot of actual historical events...so 1000+ year old spoilers in effect :)
Watched the first episode on my lunch break today. Instant epicness. Will definitely watch the rest of the series + movie!
Uhtred of Bebbinbuh'!
I owe that show a debt of gratitude for how turned on he makes my wife... There was much rejoicing in the kingdom.
Had the same effect on my wife. We would only watch an episode after the kids were in bed.
She never mistakenly called me Uhtred, but I honestly probably would have been ok with it, lol
She got Uhtred, I got Aethelflaed (Millie Brady), it was win/win
I love/hate that they tried to be somewhat historically accurate with Aethelflaed. She was my favorite female character on the show and so killing her off was a disappointment but I suppose, necessary. So qualified.
Update: finished the series yesterday and I finished the movie tonight! Loved the series. To me the movie didn't live up to the same quality of the show (personally I think it needed to be a good 30-60 mins longer) but it was still cool.
For some reason, I thought there was another season coming...will have to check out the movie this weekend
Outsiders giving me that Justified feel. Hillbilly drama is pretty well done.
Got hooked...then got gut punched. Apparently the company changed its vision on the shows they would make even as it's company's highest rated show so they dropped it after season 2, leaving the story half told.
Saw this trailer the other day and I think it looks really interesting. Last Voyage of the Demeter, hadn't heard anything about it before seeing the trailer. I'll watch the Onion Knight on a boat
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_bYvZ6VzVV8
An Atmos track for a sea-based movie with frickin' vampires?!?!?
This looks pretty damn good. Definitely on my radar now.
Went and saw the Return of the King Extended Edition in theaters this weekend. Its been a while since I've watched it and it still holds up really well, minus a few of the green screen shots they added for extended edition and a few body double swaps. The big screen is even less forgiving than at home on those.
Still, nice use of an afternoon even if the ticket was more expensive than normal.
I'm 5 (of 10) episodes in on Beef. It's excellent. If you got Netflix, I highly recommend it. A24 don't miss.
I was just going to post about this show. I'm through 4 episodes and loving it. It is nothing like I was expecting going in. I think Ali Wong is pretty funny, and she is in the show at moments, but it's soooo much deeper and darker than I was expecting. Explores some interesting themes that are super relevant right now.
But sign me for any show that has an episode end on a shot of Wong giving the Dikembe Mutumbo finger wag while The Offspring is blasting on the soundtrack.
Finished it up now. This is excellent. We're talking show of the year type of stuff that I'm sure will be on the Emmy lists.
I don't know all the Emmy categories, but it's a lock for series of the year, best actor and actress, best writing, and directing.
I thought Beef was...wild. Very unique. Really goes off the rails at the end. Not in a bad way but more in a "holy shit this got dark" way.
That said, the Emmy's will mostly be split between The Last of Us and Succession this year.
I just meant in terms of nominations. It may take a couple though. You described it perfectly, it really goes nuts there by the end. But oddly, in a way that kind of made sense too.
Beef was so good, I hope it's a stand alone season though, there are talks of a second season, and for some reason I don't think it can live up the bar season 1 set
Season 2 of Welcome To Wrexham is gonna be lit
I kept trying to watch season 1, and I keep falling asleep before I get to the end of an episode. I think I give up
Yes. Especially if they cover Reynolds buying a house nearby, etc.
Season three could be interesting as well.
Anyone watching Algiers, America? Started watchin ep 1 on Hulu last night. Follows 4 - running for 5 time Louisiana State Champ Edna Karr HS football team. I'm hooked
i highly recommend Jury Duty, you can find it on amazon. it's a fake trial, everyone involved is an actor (judge, lawyers, security guards, bailiff, jury), except for one juror. it is great. it gets crazier and crazier every episode. james marsden is himself, called for jury duty, and perfectly plays the spoiled, stuck-up movie star. a lot of it is just made-up as they go along, it can't be scripted the whole time since the jury is sequestered for several weeks...i don't know how the actors kept a straight face most the time.
it's a quick watch, highly recommended for some laughs...especially a couple later episodes since things keep getting crazier and crazier. the one non-actor, who has no idea the trial is fake...even mentions at one point how crazy everything is and it feels like a reality show.
If it is truly a surprise, can you imagine the surprise if he didn't give them a release to distribute...
I looked up "badass" on dictionary dot com. It redirected me to this trailer
If you look it up on urban dictionary it takes you to the trailer for Cocaine Bear.
This looks worth the price of admission. If the first movie was any indication, it will be three hours of excellent cinematography and hopefully coherent dialogue. (Hey Disney, this is the way)
This. I remember buying the Lynch version of Dune from a bargain DVD rack there at the record store on Main St. by Squires when I was in school.
Love the story, but such a hot mess of a film.
This version...the first one was excellent and I'm really excited for this part.
In defense of the original, it follows the book well. There were just some acting issues, and the effects technicques weren't far enough along yet. It was made 20-30 years too soon.
Not to mention that Lynch has completely disavowed this film. I think it was early in his career, and he had to completely sign away any right to a final cut. His initial cut was apparently close to 5 hrs long from what I have read. I would love to see that version, and I will be honest, I do like the movie in general.
I think going to two films was the way to go here, bc in the original what we are going to see in part 2 is what basically was boiled down into a montage in the original film, which basically just boils down all the years that Paul trains with the Freman before the final battle.
I haven't watched the trailer yet, because I'm at work, but I did see this article linked from Google News, and it sounds *really* interesting.
https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/dune-2-trailer-paul-eye-color-futu...
The author is theorizing that you can determine from Paul-Muad'Dib's eye color which scenes are from his life and which are from his prescient vision.
I can not wait. I would die if they had Jon Taffer show up and do a Bar Rescue
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is...
...FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!
If you haven't seen it, stop reading this. Get off your device and go see it NOW. They aren't lying when they say this is the best MCU movie since Endgame. It's funny, its sad, its got a kickass sound track, it's got some badass fight scenes. It's so fucking good. Just saw it and I'm so hyped there's no way I'm sleeping tonight.
It definitely hits in all the right places. A must for any Marvel fan and honestly just a really good movie in general. A proper send-off for the franchise (at least for the James Gunn trilogy+).
I finally got around to watching this on Disney+... it started off feeling pretty corny but then I really got into it as the story progressed. I am glad I stuck it out and didnt turn it off after the first bit of cringe
Got to see Return of the Jedi tonight at the altria theatre with the Richmond symphony playing along and that might be the coolest thing I've seen in theatres in ages. So cool hearing all the music live to go along with the movie which still plays so well on the big screen.
I took the kids to see Super Mario Bros. last night...and we loved it!
It's certainly not a classic piece of filmmaking. But it is exactly what it presents itself to be. Fun for them as the run time and pacing are great for kids, great for me as a kid that grew up playing the games on the original NES. It felt like playing a Mario game, and a rather good one at that.
Jack Blck and Seth Rogen steal the show, and visually it was quite good. I thought the voice acting as a whole was on point, for all the complaints people had about Pratt. I was paying more attention to those guys and Charlie Day, Armisen, and Taylor-Joy anyway
Oscar contender out of the gate on this one. I will watch anything Nolan does, and this one looks pretty good.
"Oscar" is a big word, but it looks like a good movie from the preview.
Nuclear weapons were the scariest thing man ever invented. Right up until AI became omnipresent.
Nukes are still scarier than AI, seeing as the robots will still be using them to kill us all after doing book reports for grade schoolers.
Nukes can allow other humans to kill you. AI can control you OR kill you, with or without other humans.
Both of those are scary.
I'm not scared of AI just yet, if this is the kind of "beer commercial" they create...
I wanna watch it on acid so it looks normal again. I saw this the other day. Trying to describe it is like trying to describe a dream.
welp. I'm not getting those 30 seconds back
Brought to you by the creators of the MTV video for "Black Hole Sun."
I've been enjoying Citadel, Almost Paradise, and The Man in the High Castle. Peripheral has been good. Jack Ryan and Reacher of course. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Z are a little different.
Succession has always been a great show, but season 4 is on another level. This recent episode's scene on the balcony was incredible. There's a lot of great TV out there right now, but Succession is about to get an Emmy in every category that it has a nomination.
Across The Spider-verse is pretty damn sweet. Just as good as the first. Though I gotta say, as someone that didn't really follow the filming/spoilery type news leading up to the debut, the ending of this movie completely caught me off guard.
I thought the movie was fantastic. Great visuals, great voice cast (Oscar Isaac in particular was awesome), great soundtrack and score. It's honestly one of my favorite super hero movies ever.
As for the ending, the title originally had a "Part One" as a tagline. The second part is coming out in March next year.
Yeah saw it last night and loved it. The most fun I've had at the movie theater probably since the last Spider-Man in December '21.
This movie had no right to be as good as it was. The first one was so new and unique in it's animation and art direction that any sequel should have felt lame and derivative.
Instead, it was a masterpiece. It expanded upon the styles and motifs of the first movie in a way that was simply breathtaking. I spent most of the movie looking for little details and noting how well thought-out and technically gorgeous it was.
And all that aside, the story was compelling, the soundtrack excellent and the whole thing came together very well. I kind of want to see it again, because I get the feeling that there is a lot that I never even noticed because I was too busy being wowed just by the look and feel.
I could go on about this in length. I absolutely adored the first one. This might be better. Best movie of the year for me. It is going to take a lot to top it.
Edit: Slept on this and then turned the first one on in the background while I was working today. Across the Spider-verse improves on the first in so many ways. Into the Spider-verse did so many things in new and unique ways, it was revolutionary. But looking at the first in light of the second you can see how the tech, the writing, the technique have all kind of grown up a bit along with Miles and Gwen.
10/10. If you like Spider-Man or superheroes or comics go see it. If you hate all those things, but like animation, art, composition or filmmaking, go see it.
Enjoyed it. Only beef was the theatre where I saw it had the volume so loud that the noise was distracting.
Agree 100%. Better than anything I expected, and better than it had any right to be.
And for those of you that don't know... They released multiple versions into the wild. You can go to two theaters and the film may have different scenes.... There are at least two versions, but reports are there may be as many as *TWENTY* versions out there.
Multi-Multi-Verse, anyone?
Damn my wife for not liking the art style, some one pulled a Clue and I am missing it!!!!
Just wrapped up watching I Think You Should Leave season 3, and holy shit it is amazing
Also watched The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, and I don't know what to think
I would have thought there was going to be some kind of resolution, but that was not the case. I figured they somehow would have figured out her actual age, but not really, and I have no idea what to think. I do know that the dad is a freaking weirdo.
Yeah, it seems there are no good guys in this story, aside from the poor random neighbors who didn't know what they were in for
I saw that later this summer there is going to be a 2 hour "Curious Case of Natalia Grace: Natalia Speaks", giving her side of what all went down
It's Always Sunny is back tonight for season 16! The fact that it's the longest running live action sitcom of all time is amazing.
The episode titles are available, and the 2nd one is titled "Frank Shoots Every Member of the Gang"
I can not wait
Yes I'm following up on my own comment. The first two episodes were golden. I watched by myself and was laughing out loud the entire time. The second episode it just seemed like Charlie and Mac were ad libbing the entire time and it was fantastic.
The first 5 episodes of Season 3 of The Witcher are out, and they are damn good.
Season 2 lost a little steam because IMO it tried too hard to focus on way to many "big picture" storylines, rather than keeping the focus on Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri.
Season 3 so far does not have this same issue. Some of the big political items are still there, but it keeps it's focus where it should be, and the reveal setting up the second half of the season was really well done.
It will remind you why Geralt is such an awesome character, and a lot of the personal drama and humor is back that made that first season so good.
New Ashoka trailer, first live action look at Thrawn.
Overall it looks pretty cool...
But - I'm definitely getting Data from Star Trek joined Blue Man Group vibes from Thrawn.
Happy Bluey Day to all who celebrate
One of the best kids/parents shows out there right now. Wish we got ALL the episodes in the US though.
Any thoughts on Secret Invasion? I am assuming there are multiple Nick Fury's running around because he acts so different in different scenes.
I've liked every MCU property they've put out so far. Obviously some are better than others, but I've never not liked one. This one is a miss for me. It's just so incredibly dull. I can't believe they spent 200 mil on this.
Honestly not a big fan so far
I don't mind it, but I don't love it. I feel like it either needs more to take place or they should cut some and just make it a movie.
This sums up how i've felt about a lot of the Disney+ Marvel shows. Wandavision is probably the only one (maybe Moon Knight too) that actually benefitted from a TV show format. I feel like the other stories have just been bloated movies, cut into 35 minute chunks.
I'm actually enjoying Secret Invasion more than most of the other Marvel shows, but overall I would prefer just watching it as a movie.
I think this because Disney+ gives a lot of their shows 6 episode runs. That ends up being no man's land. It's too short to really expand on themes, characters, etc like you would in a 10 or 12 episode season. But its also too long for a movie so you're having to pad out the run time with filler.
Spot on.I recently rewatched the Netflix Daredevil show and was reminded how good it was, partially because 13 hour long episodes was enough time to explore so much with the characters.
I think the new Daredevil Disney+ show is going to be 16 episodes though, so I'm hopeful they will deliver
Don't know if I have time for 13 hour episodes...
Well, now that it's over, I give it a C-/D+. Better than Falcon and Winter soldier, but that isn't saying much.
The finale was disjointed and paced weirdly and the show never really paid off on the promise of a spy thriller. The ending felt like they were just rushing to tie up plot points before they rolled credits.
I stand by my earlier comment. It either needed more story or to be trimmed way down. There just wasn't enough meat in there to justify the 6-episode run time.
The score was pretty fantastic though.
Edit: also criminal underuse of both Martin Freeman and Cobie Smulders
I don't have a lot of hope after the abomination that was the last couple of episodes of season 1, but I'm willing to give them a shot.
Please, try not to suck, Amazon.
Same, and that trailer doesn't make me super hopeful either. Looks very well-produced though! I wonder who the lady with Rand is at 0:46 🤔
I'm ready to get hurt again lol. Also I miss old Mat. Felt like that dude nailed the part.
I'm guessing she is Selene.
Oh yeah I forgot about her lol
Great actress, but not in line with the description in the book. Alexandra Daddario woulda been the right call.
That would have been a great casting. She's very qualified.
They've made so many unnecessary changes. The Seanchan costumes are just bad. The mouth guards are dumb, and using harnesses as a'dam instead of collars is lame. It's like they tried to stay away from slave imagery, but that's the entire fucking point. Slavery is bad, and images of it SHOULD be uncomfortable.
I was so excited when it was announced that Amazon was going to pay 100 million to make the series of books into a TV series in the same style of GoT. It has probably been my favorite ever book series with plenty of re-reads. I got less excited when I started hearing about some of the race changes in the casting, I always felt the book had plenty already and it didn't make sense for the geographically isolated area to all of a sudden have a massive divergence.
I made it to episode three before I realized that Amazon was just making up as they went and didn't actually intend to pay any attention at all to the source material.
I still hope that someday someone will turn the book series into a TV series or several movies. It just isn't going to be Amazon.
I saw a late night IMAX showing of Oppenheimer here...and if it doesn't win a LOT of Oscars I will be very very surprised.
I've always like Cillian Murphy since he was a nobody in 28 Days Later, and he kills this role. The real surprise to me was how awesome Robert Downey Jr. was. I think he's a good enough actor, but I did not see this coming from him.
It's visually stunning as well, and the music and score are amazing as you'd expect from something from Nolan.
The only "negative" is just that the story is depressing, in the same way Chernobyl on HBO was so amazing but also scary. Worth seeing in the theatre for sure.
I think Robert Downey Jr. is underrated in some ways - I know its funny calling a very successful A-list actor underrated, but I really think his history with addiction and his slightly camp-y role of Iron-man skew the public's perspective of him. He's incredibly talented. Similarly, I think Leonardo DiCaprio is a better actor than he gets credit for because he's seen as a "pretty boy"
Coming back from his addiction, he grew up. I think he knew that Iron Man was his last chance at being a big star again. Luckily for him, he killed it. If you look at his early stuff, it wasn't great.
Perhaps but, even early on there was something very charismatic about him. I liked what he was doing in the 80's. Less than 0 and Gothika.
There were male actors in that movie?
For another great early Cillian Murphy/Danny Boyle movie check out "Sunshine". It also has Chris Evans and Michele Yeoh. I think there are a lot of people that have not seen that one and IMHO I think it is a great movie.
The "jump scene" gives me chills EVERY TIME
How can you bring up Sunshine and not mention Mark Strong?
I agree, very underrated movie.
Did the Barbieheimer this weekend (Barbie on Sat, Oppie on Sun). I don't see how any other movie but those two are gonna sweep award season. It's gonna be heavyweight showdown between those two. It's early, but I'll go ahead and say Oppenheimer wins Best Picture (but Barbie gets Best Screenplay), Murphy gets Best Actor, Robbie gets Best Actress and then its a toss up for Downey/Gosling for Best Supporting and Gerwig/Nolan for Best Director.
As for the movie itself, it's really good. The 1st hour moves really quickly as they have a lot of backstory to fill but then it slows down a bit for the final 2 hrs. For a 3 hr film, it never drags. Nolan does an excellent job keeping you enthralled even though most of the movie is just talking. And the building tension to the actual Trinity test is just fantastic.
double thumbs up.
Barbie is...AWESOME.
Just saw it last night with the wife and three teen daughters - it was phenomenal.
One of the funniest movies I've seen in a while and also a super subversive commentary on patriarchy.
OK, I readily admit I am behind the times, but could someone explain why there is a Barbie movie, and why an adult would think it is "AWESOME"? Granted, I don't understand a lot of the younger generation's entertainment choices, y'know, like zombies and the like, but Barbie?
I mean no disrespect, I understand different tastes lead to different choices, but honestly, I don't get this one.
Enlighten me?
well, there's a writers strike right now so it'll be the last movie for a while - might as well hype it up
/s
I was going to come in here and make a joke on the Barbie movie, but I can't now after it was called awesome. My wife may get it one day and I can sit through just about anything. I'm not sure I'd pay money for the speculation of a decent movie on something I'd have low expectations for going in.
Last movie like that though was Greatest Showman that I bought tickets knowing it was a musical and the wife loves those. I ended up being pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. It still comes on rotation at the house so I guess you never know.
I went with the wife and it had some good moments but overall I was a complete miss on the nostalgia because my sister wasn't a kid that played so I largely don't remember anything about Barbie except for some commercials. I wasn't bored at all but it didn't hit the same way as for my wife. All the actors did a good job.
Movies are more about the director and their vision than the content of the film, imo. Greta Gerwig is one of very few promising young directors we have who has delivered on multiple occasions already. She's going to get the benefit of the doubt from me until further notice.
Films directed by Greta Gerwig:
Lady Bird (2017) Nominated for Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Director
Little Women (2019). Nominated for Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay
Barbie (2023)
Yeah, a) there's a trend there, and b) she's got some credibility.
Saw Oppenheimer last night at the theater and holy moly the pacing of that movie is utterly relentless lol. My pea-sized brain melts anytime there's more than like 8 characters in a movie so I found things hard to follow at some points, but it was really good.
I found things hard to follow at some points, but it was really good.
"#1 on the list of things people say after Christopher Nolan movies."
Finally saw Oppenheimer and holy shit. Visually stunning, fantastic acting, excellent score. I laughed more than I should've, but there is some Aaron Sorkin type quippiness in the dialogue.
My only gripe is that it hits its climax and there's still 45 minutes of movie. Feel like it would have been more impactful to have Trinity be the end of the movie.
Still, probably Nolan's second best film behind Dunkirk.
Was the Trinity test really the climax of the film though?
Nolan does an incredible job building tension leading up to an event that the entire world already knows was a "success". But far fewer people know about the actual aftermath of that event. I thought it was brilliant to not have that be the end of the film.
I'm with you, for the most part.
Going into the movie, I kept hearing about this grand explosion and thought it would be the finale of the movie. So I was thrown off when it happened 2 hours in and felt a little let down in the moment.
But thinking about it more, this is a biopic about the man and his life, not a movie about an explosion so I'm groovy with it. I need to watch this movie again.
I felt like Secret Invasion was a bit of a disjointed mess, really hoping that this one comes in as strong as season 1 did
I'm really hoping this is good as well, since this was the last Marvel show that was actually really good IMO. I've pretty much lost faith in Marvel to make other shows that are as quality as Loki S1 but hopefully Loki can maintain its quality.
Who does Star Trek and watch the Strange New Worlds/Lower Decks crossover? It was incredibly well done.
Wait, is that a show about fictional future space yacht worker hook-up drama? Is that a thing?
I haven't seen the latest season of SNW but....the timing seems to not really work...
Lower Decks occurs when Riker is captain
SNW occurs presumably pre-Captain Kirk.....
Maybe time travel is involved? I dunno, no spoilers please
I mean time travel is not exactly new in Star Trek lol.
You do not need to watch Strange New Worlds to watch this episode if you watch lower decks. They did a really good job.
Oh...I'm going to watch the newest season of SNW, just haven't gotten to it yet...
Just got back from TMNT Mutant Mayhem, I am not a fan of the art direction but the sound track was great.
Righteous Gemstones just finished an amazing season. Can't wait until season 4.
That season really was fantastic. The ending felt like it could be a series finale, but Season 4 being confirmed before it ended makes me so excited.
McBride did an interview where he said that he feels like every season should tell it's own story, and that's certainly how the show has been.
Succession had shown that people will watch a show about bad people and trying to figure out who to root for. Gemstones is a show about people behaving selfishly, but showing they have the ability to care about each other and you root for all of them. Even Uncle Baby Billy (who is an all time great Tv character, btw). Keefe is also a ridiculously awesome character
Really enjoyed season 3 of the witcher. Rewatched all 3 seasons for the final few episodes and they tied it well I thought. It's bittersweet though with Henry Cavill departing the role it's nothing against the incumbent but I'm afraid it will disappoint without Cavill next season
AHO! Young Warriors!
Reservation Dogs (Hulu) is back for its third and final season. Just as great as ever.
Anyone else been watching the Netflix series "Quarterback"? I'm 6 episodes in so far and am enjoying it. Documentary that follows Kirk Cousins, Patrick Mahomes, and Marcus Mariota through the 2022 NFL season. It's been fun too spotting Christian Darrisaw in the background several times in the Vikings clips.
Just binge watched the first season of Twisted Metal. It's on Peacock.
It's post apocalyptic comedy with Milkmen doing delivery runs between cities. Really hope it comes back for the second season they set up.
Just watched Dopesick, Beth Macy's most excellent tale of the Oxy explosion. I had heard she nailed it, but just hadn't gotten around to either book or series.
And my apologies for dissing Barbie, since it seems that there's more to it than I naively thought. No, haven't seen it, and no plans to do so, but down the line I'll likely check it out to see what the buzz is about.
Fun fact - dopesick was filmed in Clifton Forge and Richmond VA.... the main drs office in the show was actually my pediatricians office and my elementary school was in a bunch of episodes.
Dopesick had been languishing in my watchlist for a while. Read Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe, which is all about the Sackler family, and then binged the show in two days. Really well done show. Despite being fictionalized, it's pretty true to the facts. Michael Keaton crushed that role
Yeah, we binged it in two days as well. I was wondering where it was shot and have been in and around Clifton Forge many times. It had the look and feel of the area, and yes, Keaton crushed it. They didn't fancy it up any, and the grit of the region came through unscrubbed in the film. I have been keeping my eye on the Sackler saga and notice they're trying to wriggle out of the settlement. Poor little rich kids, never got punished for what they did. What's new?
Dopesick was so good. Strange watching that and realizing I had Oxy in the upstairs medicine cabinet.
Y'know, it's an excellent drug for pain.
I've heard. Instead, I crushed and snorted it to see what all the hoopla was about.
Well, that's a Saturday night, huh?
I don't know to be honest, I don't remember the night. (One would say if they actually did that)
One just might.
Wouldn't know myself, either.
What's everyone's thought on the preview of Winter King coming on MGM+? I am really looking forward to it. MGM+ usually does a really good job on these original series. Still waiting to see if they give us a second season Rogue Heroes. Britannia and Pennyworth were two other good ones.
This one is kind of a letdown so far. Britannia is so much better done than Winter King.
I recently started watching a series called "Severance" on Apple TV.
Great cast, interesting premise. Great if you like mystery, science fiction, slightly dark and philosophical subject matter.
Severance had a great first season. The last writer's strike has probably pushed back the second by a year already as it stands. (Spring 2024 is the latest I'm seeing).
I don't really get into a lot of TV shows but this one hit home on several levels.
Just started watching Dance with Dragons and again I'm shocked at how they film these scenes so no one can see them unless you're in a theater. Can't watch during the day at all can barely watch at night with all the lights turned off and screen brightness turned all the way up.
Wheel of Time Season 2 has been hard to follow. Just all over the place on the characters. Still not sure how they are going to connect all this.
End of the third episode really started tying things back together.
I just had to stop watching after the third episode of Season 1. I was too big a fan of the books and they were slaughtering the source material left and right.
The shows jumps so much I kind of gave up trying to compare it to the books. The last two episodes have been much easier to follow the storyline so that's at least a plus.
The momentum of this last episode was great. It really is bringing the debut of the Dragon to a head and am really looking forward to it.
I was a huge fan of the books back in the 90's and 00's but have forgotten most of the details about the plotlines. I have enjoyed the second season more than the first as the character development of Rand, Perrin, Egwene and Nynaeve have been excellent imho. Looking forward to seeing how they are going to wrap up the season in the next episode as the trailer has me intrigued.
I'm with you on this. A lot of people I know who were big fans of the books hate the show, but if you take it on it's own, it's actually pretty good. Agree on season 2 being better than season 1, too. Looking forward to the next one.
Ditto, I read the books a million years ago. I know there are a crapload of characters and side plots which probably lends to the slightly disjointed feel, there's a lot to cover. That being said, I agree that the second season was much better. They didn't have to spend as much time world-building and could focus on the characters, which is where the books shined as I recall.
Anyone who watches Lower Decks, the first 2 episodes of season 4 did not disappoint.
The Continental on Peacock did not disappoint. The show is based on Winston 's battle to take over the Continental. A quasi prequel story to John Wick.
I 2nd this. It was a pleasant surprise.
So wish this was more than a 3 episode event. This show could go on for years and I would be there for all of it.
Looks like the writers strike might be coming to an end.
Just started watching some old HBO show called The Wire. So far, it is top notch, 5 episodes in, will probably keep going
SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII....
Anyone else watch the first 3 episodes of Gen V on Prime Video? It's a "The Boys" spin-off based on a college for Supes. It's just as ridiculous and satirical (I think in a good way) as The Boys.
I enjoyed it immensely. The two guards getting Mind f-ed to suck a flashlight. Cricket crawling through a brain was also killer. The ridiculous is what makes the show.
4th episode seemed mainly storyline setting and didn't have as much ridiculous although Giant Cricket was a twist I wasn't expecting to get.
I assumed that was still part of her ability. I just want to know who is mind wiping everyone. Whether it's Cate or that date rape psychic dude they introduced and is in future episodes. I also assume Jordan is part of it with how close they were to Brink.
Still curious what the principal has over Cate. They set the stage for the scientist locking up Marie in "the Woods".
Last episode sets the scene to connect the V to the main show in next season. Had some twists I didn't expect.
Loki season 2 started out great. Seems like it's going to be a lot of fun
Started out great but good God farout. And no offense to Short Round, but I had to subtitle him just to understand what he was saying half the time. Temporal Loom? Dafuq?
Good Omens season 2 is out, and I'm rewatching season 1 before I get into it. I had forgotten how good this show is. Michael Sheen and David Tennant should be in everything.
Loki season 2 has been awesome so far. Definitely my favorite season of a Marvel show.
it's probably not great but I'll probably also watch it and likely enjoy it
because, when it comes to movies, I'm easy to please
I really liked the last one, so I'm sure I'm going to like this one as well.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biiJrS-GZQM
This has me excited for the second season.
Glad to see it is getting another. Love the books and thought Season 1 was pretty well done.
Killers of the Flower Moon was, to no surprise, absolutely brilliant and devastating.
I have been looking forward to this series ever since I heard whispers about it being in early development maybe 10 years ago. Love Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
I am pumped as well but it looks like it might be AppleTV+ only and I don't have that one. I was really hoping it would be on HBO, because I don't want to get yet another streaming subscription.
I wish they would just let you go a la carte on some of this stuff rather than forcing you to sign up. I would pay for just this show and maybe one or two of the other shows on there.
I feel this way about Paramount+. About 4 shows I would go in for there but not worth another full streaming cost.
You can get Apple TV+ for free for three months through Best Buy.
Also by buying an apple device from anywhere. Ipad, phone, PC, etc.
Which is how the dealer hooked me.
Maybe a remake of the black sheep squadron.
Movie or TV?
Either way I feel like they'd cast Boyington too old. He was 29 when he started flying for the Flying Tigers, and 31 when he took over 214. Yet there would be no way they'd cast somebody like Joseph Quinn, Charlie Heaton, Hunter Doohan, Will Poulter, Joe Keery, Freddie Highmore, or Logan Lerman in that role.
They'd probably take somebody in the age range of Joseph Gordon Levitt, Rami Malek, Ashton Kutcher, Sebastian Stan, or Adam Garcia; much like how Robert Conrad was when he filmed (41 years old)
But the public won't believe in a 31 year old guy named Pappy.
Huge Black Sheep Squadron fan when I was a kid.
Same.
I had that and Hogan's Heroes on all the time when I was younger.
Every time I think I'm out they pull me back in.
I started AppleTV+ for Ted Lasso, and then they kept me on for a bit with Severance. But Masters of the Air does seem like something I have to see.
After finishing season of Bosch Legacy, Freevee rolled over to Troppo which is a pretty fun show so far. This is another Australian show that I have really enjoyed. Think this is like 4 or 5 shows in the last year. Private investigator show into some backwater bayou crimes.
I was real hesitant when Bosch started because I loved the book series, but that and Goliath are the shows that Amazon have nailed. Titus Welliver has played the role to perfection, and the way they managed to interweave plots of different books was pretty great.
The Freevee thing also worried me at first, but it's effectively the same show with a worse intro song. Plenty of source material left to work with, but unfortunately we're never gonna get the Bosch/Lincoln Lawyer crossover stories. Kinda hoping they do a spin-off Jack McAvoy series.
Helps that Freevee is owned by Amazon too
Has anyone seen the new Squid Game show? It's a reality show based on the TV show, it's actually really good and I don't like reality shows or game shows at all. Also the one player everyone hates used to be a Clemson linebacker.
Awwww shit here we go!
amazing, looks awesome
side note: I'm wondering if it is time to start the 2024 thread. This thing is taking ages to load.
I was going to wait til the new year to do it, but I could just open a 2023/24 WInter TV/Movie Discussion like I did for Gamers Lounge
No Theron, no watch.
I dunno, man. Anya Taylor-Joy is definitely more than qualified for the role
Agree.
I think she was the prefect choice to play the young version of Theron.
I think she has it in her to make it epic.
Yes, I'm a fan.
Anyone else watch any of the Halo season on Prime? Not sure if it just dropped over from Paramount + but first time it came up on one of my searches. Two episodes in and not sure what I think so far.
If its the same halo series I am thinking of... its laughably awful and not worth your time
Yeah has been tough to stay with. The over acting on certain roles is comical. Really too bad because it could be much better. Definitely worse than the Halo movie from a few years ago.
Shoulda just commissioned a couple new seasons' worth of Red Vs Blue.
You know a show is trying too hard when they have as many Behind the Scenes episodes as show episodes.
Gonna need some shows to watch during bowl season. Whatcha got?
The Gold on Paramount+! I keep telling people to watch it but apparently I'm the only person I know who has Paramount+...however it's damn excellent.
Funny enough, I have Paramount+. What's it about?
Here's the Wikipedia synopsis: "Hugh Bonneville stars alongside Jack Lowden and Dominic Cooper in a series inspired by the iconic true story of the Brink's-Mat robbery and its aftermath. On 26 November 1983, six armed men broke into the Brink's-Mat security depot, stumbling across gold bullion worth £26m. The disposal of the bullion caused the birth of large-scale international money laundering, provided the dirty money that helped fuel the London Docklands property boom, united blue and white-collar criminals and left controversy and murder in its wake. What started as a `typical Old Kent Road armed robbery' according to detectives at the time, became a seminal event in British criminal history."
I was not alive at the time of the events so I had no idea about it, but heard on a podcast it was great and was not disappointed!
Cool I might check it out.
i also have paramount+, mostly for the soccers
If you have Apple+, Monarch has been pretty solid so far. New Titans, expands the Monsterverse. Only real let down so far is that it has Kurt Russel hunting a monster in a snowy wasteland, and they didn't include a single reference to The Thing.
A little early, but I excited
Looked interesting.
I'm skeptical given Prime's history with video game shows, lookin at you Halo, but this looks so much better. Visually looks great and gets infinite points for what looks to be a healthy amount of screen time for Dogmeat
That was Paramount not prime. And it was horrible.
Yep Paramount loaned season one to Prime recently but Paramount still making new Halo episodes
Right my bad. That show was so bad I even blocked out who made it
It just got worse and worse episode by episode.
Made me look up Fast Delivery after watching all The Boys shows but I can't find anything on it.
Can't tell if "woooosh" or not but they are referring to Amazon and their shipping...
If any of ya'll are into fuck with your head movies, go see Saltburn. That movie is wild.
Slow horses, aka the best show on any service right now, back with season 3. Gary Oldman remains the GOAT
Its so perfectly British. And he's the exact correct person for that role.
Also enjoy how every single person says the name of the house differently.
I'll not sure how to feel about another round of Back to the Future.
Meh I could do without this.
This is a fake trailer lol.
Glad to hear it. It cropped up as though it was real, and I don't pay enough attention to Hollywood to actually know.
If the fake trailer gets enough views, some Hollywood exec will approve the project for real.
Anyone else watch Leave the World Behind yet on Netflix? There is a lot of hate for the ending out there in the interwebs (I won't do spoilers) but personally I thought it was great.
I liked it. My initial thought about the ending was a bit of wtf, but then thinking about it, I think it was great. Not everything needs to be tied up in a perfect bow.
RIP Capt Holt
😭
If you are OK with animation, I would highly recommend Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix. Great characters and interesting story. Not for kids.
Awesome show and I'm already anxious for season 2
Man Violent Night is Home Alone meets Bad Santa and I am here for all of it.
Might be next in line after Die Hard for me going forward. Available on Prime.
Somehow, I don't think I'll be talking the wife into that one.
Got season one of troll hunters on dvd for Christmas. Starting another watch through an introducing my 12 year old to it. So good.
Farewell old friend. Sometimes its not bad to be stuck.
