Hey Nerds, back with yet another home-cooked advanced box score. Continuing to tweak the format. As always, feedback is welcomed.
WTF am I looking at and how do I read this???
The purpose of this format is to take a bunch of (so called) advanced metrics from a single game, and compare them to a larger sample size, in hopes of gaining a better understanding of how good/bad the team performed.
- The numbers in the left-most column of each table (the color coded columns) represent the team's week 10 performance
- The numbers in the 5 right columns represent the Minimum, Lower Quartile, Median, Upper Quartile, and Maximum across a given sample.
- As mentioned previously, the metrics from the most recent game are color coded:
- White/no color = median
- Dark Green = really good (approaching a min or max, depending on the metric)
- Dark Red = really bad (approaching a min or max, depending on the metric)
How did this VT offensive performance compare to past offensive performances this year?

How did Louisville's Defensive performance to their past performances this year?

How did this VT defensive performance compare to past defensive performances this year?

How did Louisville's Offensive performance to their past performances this year?

Some quick Callouts:
- If you are unsure of what a given stat means, check here.
- Nothing here is opponent adjusted
- Last week I included 2 additional charts that compared single game performances to national averages. I did not include those this time because I felt that it was a wonky comparison and not very informative.
- Feedback is always welcomed - happy to iterate on the format. Tell me what you like/don't like.

Comments
So, do to other commitments this weekend, I might've caught 5 minutes of this game. While it's less than ideal, trying to piece together what happened based on looking at stats is always a sort of fun game. With that said, a few takeaways:
I'm curious to hear what others who actually watched the game thought? Any surprising numbers? Anything jumping off the page? Or is this mostly what you expected?
I saw Louisville play earlier in the year and commented that I hoped we'd be able to score on them at all. Their defense is very good and, frankly, I don't know that any oc would have been able to do much against them with the OLine we have. It's a frustrating and disappointing result but until we get some more talent on the OLine our offense is going to struggle mightily against good defenses.
Two of UofL's scores they started on their side of the field so offensively they did t have to be good. I don't remember any big pass plays only plays that we made worse by not tackling. So outside of our run fits which I don't think left, just the other teams we played weren't good enough to take advantage it didn't feel that bad a game from our defense. Now big runs and not tackling make the defense feel really bad, but if you ignore the basic fundamentals, then not bad.
I said this after the Duke game, I would be happy if we just scored, so scoring streak is alive! But it felt kind of like they had a Bud Foster style where they played tight man coverage and dared you to see if you had enough time to set up longer routes before the pass rush got you. I can't remember a time where we played a defense that aggressive that backed it up with great play. Lots of time there are things you can do to alow down a defense but all those felt covered.
I feel like we've said this about the defense in every loss since 2018
Yeah our defense wasn't competitive with Louisville either- they did what they wanted, when they wanted.
