Cattoor breaks a record....and builds on it
The Hokies are in the ESPN Events Invitational semifinals after beating Boise State and will face Iowa State and then either Texas A&M or Florida Atlantic depending on results. The Hokies face the Cyclones after an 82-75 win over Boise State.
The Iowa State Cyclones squad comes in 5-0. This will be the third meeting between the Hokies and Iowa State. The Hokies are 1-1 with the last meeting a 99-77 loss in 2015 during the Emerald Coast Classic when Iowa State was ranked 4th in the country. The only other meeting was in 1984, a Hokies win during the Volunteer Classic. In that one the Hokies were the 11th ranked team with Perry Young and Dell Curry.
The Cyclones are coached by T.J. Otzelberger, who is in his third season at Iowa State. The Cyclones are 46-27 under Otzelberger. This is his third head coaching job with assistant stops at Chipola, Iowa State and Washington. He was head coach at South Dakota State and UNLV where he was 99-63. Iowa State has been to the NCAA in both seasons. The Cyclones opened their season with wins over Green Bay, Lindenwood, Idaho State and Grambling State. They beat VCU yesterday 68-64 to advance. VCU is by far their best victory so far. They were 10th in the nation in scoring going into the game against VCU at over 90 points per game but that took a big hit with only 68 last night. Dropped them to 86.6 ppg so they may struggle against solid defense.
The big changes in the roster are the loss of Jeremiah Williams, Caleb Grill, Eli King and seldom used Burke Smith. They added five freshmen with two contributing in Omaha Biliew who did a year in prep school, and team scoring leader Milan Momcilovic. They also got commitments from transfers Curtis Jones (Buffalo), Keshon Gilbert (UNLV), and Jackson Paveletzke (Wofford). The eight newcomers see Momcilovic, Gilbert and Jones in the top four scorers combing for 39.3 ppg, 11.5 rpg and 6.6 apg. Biliew and Paveltzke add another 10 ppg, 3 rpg and 2 apg. These five additions represent roughly 50% of the teams scoring.
The Cyclones have five players averaging more than 20 mpg and nine average more than 12 mpg. The starting five are Momcilovic, Gilbert, PG Lipsey, King, and Ward although Ward will miss this game due to injury. In his place they likely will start Forward Robert Jones. The bench contributors of note are Robert Jones, Biliew and Demarion Watson. They have five players averaging double figure scoring.
Defensively, Iowa State play a high pressure man-to-man but occasionally switches to a 1-3-1 zone. Traps on the baseline and high intensity leading to turnovers that feed a high paced transition game on offense. They work to force teams off perimeter shots but the results have been hit or miss on that front. In three games they held opponents under 29% from outside on but Idaho State and VCU both shot above 42%. They have forced at least 16 turnovers in each game, with three games over 20. They average 21 points off turnovers.
Offensively, the Cyclones rely heavily on transition to create offense. Their coach wants quick attempts at scoring so expect the first open shot to be what they take. Until VCU their high-flying offense had not shot less than 47% from the floor but the Rams held them to 40% yesterday. They run a variety of screening actions, usually with three guards and two bigs on the floor. They may utilize a big lineup similar to how Boise State had success last night against the Hokies. They have the players to put five guys 6'5 or taller on the floor together.

What to expect from Iowa States?
The Cyclones have won the rebounding contest in all five games by a margin of at least eleven. They box out on defensive shots extremely well and move up the court quickly. This may actually be a game where I am in favor of Young's scheme to be set in the half court in lieu of rebounds simply to slow the Cyclones down.
The starting guard duo of Gilbert and Lipsey will be a significant challenge for Pedulla and Cattoor to keep in check. They come in averaging over 30 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists combined. Gilbert is a slasher, rarely shooting outside while Lipsey is the primary ballhandler and will shoot from outside.
The biggest challenge to stopping the Cyclones though is Freshman Forward Milan Momcilovic. He is very similar to what Basile brought on offense last year for the Hokies. He actually takes more three-point attempts than interior shots. He is shooting 50% from outside on almost five shots per game. The Rams managed to limit him to four points so hopefully the Hokies staff took notes and can keep him off the board.
Due to the transition game, Iowa State gets to the line at a high rate. They average 26 attempts per game, most specifically Gilbert creating fouls. He was 12-15 from the line against VCU and averages seven attempts per game. They shoot 70% as a team which equates to 19-20 points per contest. They were 18-30 from the line yesterday. They only allow opponents to get to the line 16 times per contest. The Hokies though will be the largest team the Cyclones have seen and likely the most developed offensively.
The Hokies
Hunter Cattoor became the Hokies all-time three pointers made record holder last night, passing A.D. Vassallo enroute to a nineteen-point performance with five threes. Pretty fitting that he would do it in his hometown in front of 30 family and friends. Pedulla also dropped five threes on his way to an eighteen-point night.
The Hokies overcame a really poor start against Boise and closed out the game defensively. They can ill afford to allow Iowa State to get a double-digit advantage. This game, it is critical they are set on defense and able to prevent fast break opportunities.
Lynn Kidd flirted with another twenty-point night, finishing with 19. Tyler Nickel asserted himself for his third double digit performance but more importantly Coach Young kept him on the floor significantly more than previous games. He had several great slam dunks including this one from Pedulla.
Long and Beran put up 8 points in 41 minutes. Beran had one really strong defensive play that he transitioned to a basket but gave that back with three really poor possession mistakes on the offensive end. Collins did not score and was in foul trouble early so only saw 8 minutes on the floor. Young really needs the freshman guard duo to be able to take on a larger role because Cattoor and Pedulla cannot keep having to have 35+ minute nights. Both played 37 minutes against Boise.
In Closing
The Hokies face likely their hardest test of the season so far and most likely in this tournament overall due to the fast-paced game the Cyclones play. They have to be ready from the tip unlike against Boise where they took nearly ten minutes to turn the game around.
Can the Hokies disrupt the rhythm that the Cyclones guards are accustomed to? That answer likely determines the outcome of this game. I am not usually a proponent of mucking up the pace of a game but in this instance I hope the Hokies have buckets of muck ready. Force Iowa State to run a set offense and they will struggle. VCU did it and held Iowa State nearly 25 points off their season pace. They just didn't have enough offense to finish. The Hokies have that offense.

Comments
Good story but Iowa State is in the Big XII, not the Mountain West.
Yep remnant I didn't catch using the Boise State writeup as the start point. Writing at 1-2am not recommended for quality.
Love the analysis.
We're watching the game tonight.
Let's go Cycl-okies!
I guess one of my teams has to win here.
Lots of Iowa State fans here, let's hope we can keep them quiet tonight. LET'S GO!!!
HOKIES!!
CMY's team has to play much harder than its opponent due to a slight lack in athleticism (this has been a trend with the CMY VT teams). They did an admiral job of that for 30 minutes last night. The key, as touched on in your writeup (thank you!) will be ISU getting to the line. If we aren't able to match the athleticism of ISU the fouls will pile up quickly.
ESPN App says Hokies bumped to ESPNU but my TV guide says they are on ESPN2. Either way bumped for Baylor v Florida by the look of things
Also, ESPNU is now playing Memphis and Nova.
Beran and Collins on the Floor to start again. I just don't fucking get it....
edit: wrong thread
Put Nickel in already
Doesn't look like they watched much film the way these guys are getting open
Collins miss a gimme and Beran dumb foul
Get Collins OFF THE FLOOR
Nickel scores in less than a minute of play lol
MJ Collins is not a D1 basketball player. Sorry.
Last night...Collins was 0-3 in 8 min with 3 PF. And he's still starting over Nickel. I dont understand. Nickel wound up playing 32 min 5-10 from the floor for 14 points, 4 rebounds and w assists with 0 PF. What am I missing?
I think Young in the early game is trying to keep scoring options on the floor at all times but if yesterday holds Nickel played 32 minutes against Boise. I also think Young values defense more and thinks Collins is better (really questionable)
Collins is the better defender and is better at distribution.
Collins has 11 assists, to 1 turnover on the season coming into the night and add on to that 5 steals.
Nickel is the better scorer, but is "only" 6:1 on the ATO margin with 3 steals.
Might as well count every shot he takes as a turn over too and redo your calculation for me
Sorry...to my novice eye, (and you guys are WAY better experts than me) a little bit of defense is not worth 0-5 shooting...again....no buckets in 2 games....Nickel last night at least had a steal and a block and a couple assisted with no PF....Collins was 0-fer on those except he did have I think 3 PF's
Yes he got two fouls in first four minutes and sat. Started second half got a third and basically sat the rest
FAU almost put a hundo on Texas A&M earlier. 96 - 89.
Not a block
That is a rough call on Cattoor
Iowa State doesn't need the whistle help
Should have been a foul on the ISU guard jumping into Kidd on that rebound
Refs letting the game be physical. I say let's get busy. Poteat especially.
Wow Kidd takes it in the face but nothing to see here
Letting the freshman have his way with our defense. Freshman mistake on Rech not getting outside of cylinder
Fucking A Catoor!
Poteat "lost his balance" getting mugged
Why do we have such a hard time boxing out on defensive rebounds?
Hunter Cattoor
Does Mekhi Long have the best mustache in college sports?
There have to be some baseball pitchers or hockey players who can outdo it, they're on another level
But for basketball, nah man it's elite
Collins = Broad side of barn safe
never uses the backboard on the close ones and can't hit the long ones!
Kinda concerned about how many minutes he gets. He does a lot of good things but his inability to get baskets is an issue.
I would feel really good about this team if it was Rodney Rice getting those minutes [sigh]
Collins is approaching Bede levels of ineffectiveness on offense
Just put Nickel in more
Oh 100%. There's an easy fix there.
I think Collin's missed multiple threes in the first half where he was left open; Nickel came in and sank two identical shots
What a terrible lapse to close
If they could have delayed him by .1 sec, he would have been too late.
Lots of maroon in the audience.
HOKIES have 12 assist on 13 made FG. This is good.
Lynn Kidd has zero rebounds in the first half. This is bad.
HOKIES are out rebounding them 19 - 14. This is good.
HOKIES have eight turnovers in the first half. This is bad.
HOKIES are 46% FG, 44% 3pt, and 85% FT. This is good.
Not to call out Lynn. Sometimes that's just the way the ball bounces.
Just surprising to me he doesn't have any rebounds in the first half. That was not on my bingo card!
Someone make a gif of that dancing kid
Thankee sai
OK... MJ gave us some decent defensive and "hustle" minutes, but I'm not sure it warrants more than 5-7 minutes a game IMO. He's can really get to the basket, but I'm not sure I've ever seen a D1 player miss that many layups.
On a positive, team, note, we are playing a physical team really well.
Collins can't even hit uncontested from the line
Beran was set. Third time today that's been poor officiating
I have absolutely no idea what is a charge anymore
Is it just me or does Momcilovic looks like Meadow Soprano's boyfriend that caught Vito in a delicate situation at the construction site?
That was not a high level move...that was an Oscar performance. Should not have been shooting as ball went backwards.
At points we let opposing teams sloppy play turn into our in own sloppy play.
Long was knocked off balance .. another contact with no whistle
Pedulla saving Collins mistake only to have Collins blow another shot
Young needs a timeout
Kidd has got to figure out to look to his backside on that double
He's getting doubled by 2 guys that he's much bigger than just has to find the hoop or open man and keep the ball high.
And a new lineup on the floor Collins has costed a lot of points tonight and contributed to maybe 4
Really over the officials allowing ISU to put shoulders into offensive players with no fouls.
I just don't get it. 3-7, 9 pts Nickel needs to be on the floor instead of 1-8, 2 pts collins to salt this game away.
Would like to see Young put Pedulla Cattoor Nickel Poteat and Kidd on the floor together
Give Kidd a complement big so they can't double so often
Cattoor was hit on the shot just like the foul called on him earlier
Pretty inconsistent in what's being allowed by the defender on each side right now
Haven't scored in over 6 mins! Taking bad shots and empty possessions.
Guy punched Cattoor in the face after putting him to the floor
Would love to see Poteat get him back....
Too much dribbling and standing around on offense. No ball movement or motion at all. It's like they've completely gone away from what got them the 11 point lead.
I want to see that again. Didn't look like we touched that ball last.
How many of those misses were Collins?
12 and a half minutes into the 2nd half, and Beran gets his first points.
Pedulla going up with two guys draped on him for second time with no call
Poteat has to have better lane awareness there
Beran is so sloppy
Pedulla brushes their pg and it's a foul, Pedulla gets bodied driving and it's silence
Pedulla hand checked four times
Not often I get 2 x 2 hour stomach aches in one day
They just went small got to feed kidd inside
The small guys have given Kidd more problems than the bigs
Bro, what is Pedulla doing?
Too much yet too little
We just can't seem to get the 50-50 balls
Shocked that was blocking. Might not have gotten a shot up to beat shot clock otherwise.
need to go at 0 and 22. both with four fouls.
Ugh ugly turnover. Unforced error
Thank goodness he airballed. Hokies getting thrown to floor fighting for rebounds
2 baskets in 10 min and we still have the lead
Crap call on catoor there
Coach on the floor ten feet past the coaches box not even a warning from officials
Cattoor didn't even touch him
He did allow his chest to be pushed by Lipsey when he started to drive.
Yeah his chest with his outstretched hand
Big Balls Pedulla!
One recurring theme with Mike Young is that we play really, really dumb basketball with leads late in games year after year
We are making some really tough baskets right now that we shouldn't have to be even attempting
The over the back calls are so inconsistent in this game.
Wow Kidd called for a foul that hasn't been called all game on rebounding
Pedulla ice in his veins
Nickel wtf you doing bruh lmao
Ugh Collins has to get that ball to Pedulla
Guess it worked out
At least Collins makes his free throws....🤪
Not sure we have any business winning this one but whatever
Don't worry Sunday will be another level of opponent
Yeah we're not putting much together. Our offense looks lost frequently. Our defense looks lost frequently. FAU is gonna have a field day.
Thought they were going to call Beran for a walk
FAM x 2
DOUBLE FAM TODAY! LETS MAKE IT A TRIPLE FAM TOMORROW!
Fammity fam fam!!!
Go Hokies!
15 turnovers and still win! Whew!
FAM!!!
That kid dancing should be a mandatory FAM play.
Just a tidbit for Sunday...FAU shot 16-30 from 3 against Aggies today
Hokies shoot 87% at the line for twenty.
Held ISU to 24% from outside.
Four Hokies in double figures with Kidd, Nickel, Pedulla and Cattoor.
HOKIES WON THE REBOUNDING BATTLE 30-35.
Collins is still 0 for the tournament but at least he made his free throws and made some good plays defensively (in the first half). Still a black hole and it's ridiculous Nickel isn't starting over him.
Still an absolute Q1 win today, FAM
He actually had the dunk at the end of the first half so 1-11 from the floor with four points in two games.
I saw the Hokies win in person FAM!! And they played Enter Sandman! And Mike Young waved at me after the handshake line!! FAM!! ❤️🦃🏀
FAM for DisneyHokie!!!
This was the first game this season I watched almost the entire game. Looks like this team could use another take-you-off-the-dribble offensive player (who couldn't, right?), but I will say this: The team plays hard defensively and has some grit, and Pedulla and Cattoor are All-ACC level players for sure.
Tonight was a really good win any way you cook it. Iowa State is a good program that certainly would be a mid- to high-level ACC program. They've averaged just over 20 wins the last two seasons, making the NCAA tournament both years. In fact, they've been to the NCAA tournament 9 of the last 12 seasons.
They were ahead of the curve on working the transfers. For years ISU reset by bringing in 2-3 new guys that hadn't fit elsewhere.
How does Mike Young have any hair left? Every game there are 6 minute stretches where I am not sure anyone on our team has played better than a high school level. The man is a saint!
