That was a BIG win for the team... so far only one to lose to a lower seed is Latona while Crook and Smith have beat higher seeds
On another note about Crook - he has a twin thats wrestling in the tourney for Harvard.

Have four in the quarterfinals and five still working in the consolation bracket.
The Hokies punched four into the quarterfinals – quarterfinal winners secure All-American honors

No. 12 Bryce Andonian defeated Northern Iowa's Big 12 champion, No. 5 Ryder Downey, 9-6
No. 4 Caleb Henson advanced by defeating No. 20 Jordan Williams (OSU) in a battle of highly touted recruits

Mekhi will have his hands full for his 1st match today against Carter Starocci. Mekhi will have to go on the offensive as Carter gave up a couple takedowns yesterday after not being taken down all season so if there was ever a time for Mekhi to go from his defensive/counter-strike mindset to taking more chances this would be the time.

I missed the context of this question but that would be an instance of neutral positioning, generally with the wrestlers are facing each other standing on the mat or complete disconnection from each other. There are a lot of nuances to who has control though so a reversal from the standing position can cross a lot of lines.

Bryce was able to get up, thought there was a moment of break and then went into a takedown. It was quick so I understand, just asking as a wrestling noob

Hokies go 6-3 in this session. 2 advance to Semifinals. 2 drop to consolations. 4 advance in consolation. Flynn the only one eliminated so 8 Hokies still wrestling.

BA's risky style has brought some of the most memorable moments over these past years and that's what I've loved about watching every time. The pin that Cornell's Shapiro did on him earlier today was the 1st time I've ever seen that happen when Bryce was on top when he got pinned in a split second.

To be fair there were six other teams to have all ten qualify and I believe all six are ahead of us. We were ranked 13th in team rankings coming in so finishing top ten is still above that. Not sure how many points Henson can score if he wins the championship. Arizona State and Nebraska are probably within reach if things go right. Nebraska I believe is done wrestling and Arizona State has the underdog in the 157 final. Oklahoma State and Ohio State are right behind the Hokies. They both have two in the finals.

Hokies end up 7th overall. Crazy the difference a couple matches could have made it. Andonian alone could have moved them to 2nd if he had avoided the last takedown in the semis. Hokies allowed six takedowns in final 30 seconds of matches so hopefully something they learn from.
Comments
Bryce wins his match --- can hear the Hokie faithful in the stands chanting Let's Go - Hokies!
Andonian won 5-1.
Sam and Conner lose their opening matches.
Hokies are 4-2 in opening round matches.
Mekhi just got the MD.
Hokies now 5-2.
Brady loses his match while Mekhi gets a major decision
Second time Brady was ridden for entire period without escape in the last month. Tough watch.
Stewart a bad man. Pin in the 1st
you're a fast a TJ --- I'm drinking :)
TJ Stewart with the PIN!!! less than a minute
TJ Stewart. My goodness.
Wow!!!!
I could never figure wrestlers out. Odds are at some point that is going to happen to you. That just looks painful and no fun. He is a bad MF.
Smith with HUGE upset
Beats 7th ranked in Sudden Victory
Bonus is he beat an Iowa guy to send him to consolation bracket.
Andy Smith with BIG upset over 7 seed from Iowa in OT
That was a BIG win for the team... so far only one to lose to a lower seed is Latona while Crook and Smith have beat higher seeds
On another note about Crook - he has a twin thats wrestling in the tourney for Harvard.
Are they same weight class
I guess it would depend on what kind of twins they are.
That's about right - his brother is up a weight class at 149
Obviously our wrestler is much smarter than the one who went to that lame MA school.
Loss by Catka
Hokies go 7-3 in the opening round
Yeah Hokies have a few guys that really need to work on escapes. Second guy to get ridden a whole period.
Hokies sit in 6th place with 11.5 points - still ALOT of wrestling to go

Bryce is working Downey, now 8-1 after a reversal
Survives. Didn't like how he was rocking that knee after 2nd.
Well now he can rest it for tomorrow morning
Bryce wins 9-6
Are they not doing rest of classes tonight? Been a while
Mekhi up on Mat 6

10-3 Steward advances to the QF
Smith in the hole on 6
Could Nebraska have a more NIL ready last name than Allred?
damn
Wow that was bullshit
Controlled both legs
Horseshit call
Welp think that ends any shot at team final
Catka on deck on mat 6
Big Cat up 3-0 + RT
7-0 plus RT
Big Cat with the MD 11-0
Nice way to end the round. If Andy has finished that takedown it would have been a great round.
4 in the quarters
5 left in the consolation
Oof PedU has all 10 still alive and 8 in the quarters.
Mekhi National Title most likely decided in next match. Believe he goes up against Starocci tomorrow morning.
Hokies start back up at noon today.
Have four in the quarterfinals and five still working in the consolation bracket.
The Hokies punched four into the quarterfinals – quarterfinal winners secure All-American honors

Yeah Starocci is definitely still having issues with the knee. Lewis folds that leg of his up early and could change the whole match.
Here are todays first matchups
Quarterfinals
149-pounds – No. 4 Caleb Henson vs No. 5 Ty Watters (WVU)
157-pounds – No. 12 Bryce Andonian vs No. 4 Ed Scott (NCST)
174-pounds – No. 1 Mekhi Lewis vs No. 9 Carter Starocci (PSU)

Cooper Flynn eliminated 5-1
Latona up on mat 7
Leads 3-0 after 1
Latona stays alive 4-1
Tom Crook coming up on Mat 2
Crook up 3-0 after 1. Over 1 min ride time. His opponent has been sitting Indian style in the down position. Never seen that before.
Crook rode him entire 2nd. Over 3 min riding so point locked. 3-0 still
Crook stays alive 7-3
Henson up next on Mat 4
Leads 3-1 after 1
Henson is an Two Time All American with an 8-3 win
Whenever we beat WVU in anything I remember the chant from the Big East days:
"GO BACK! GO BACK! GO BACK INTO THE WOODS!
YOUR FATHER IS YOUR UNCLE AND YOUR TEAM'S NO GOOD!!"
Andonian up on mat 4
That was almost quick
Leads 6-2 after 1
9-6 after 2. Last escape could be bad
Andonian a Three Time All American 13-7
What distinguishes a reversal from an escape into an immediate takedown?
Complete disconnection from each other
I missed the context of this question but that would be an instance of neutral positioning, generally with the wrestlers are facing each other standing on the mat or complete disconnection from each other. There are a lot of nuances to who has control though so a reversal from the standing position can cross a lot of lines.
Bryce was able to get up, thought there was a moment of break and then went into a takedown. It was quick so I understand, just asking as a wrestling noob
looks like i was blinded by the magic that was that reversal
I would hate to be a ref for some of Bryces matches that guy just flies around everywhere.
Bryce wins 13-7
'Ole Eddie boy from State did quite a bit of celebrating during the year but got beat when it matters most. Love to see it.
Now time for the headliner
Mekhi up on mat 3 next
Is there a reason Trackwrestling isn't updating Lewis' match?
Losing 4-0 after 2
Lost 4-0
Ouch tough loss for Mekhi.
Was too fucking hesitant. Every time he wrestles this guy he rarely shoots. Really frustrating.
Hokies in 6th but Penn State is nearly a lock for team title. They have a 28.5 point lead over #2 Iowa
Stewart up next on Mat 6
Totally confused
what just happened?
No idea. Said it was 6-4 Stewart. Thought it was going to be 5-5
What a terrible 15 seconds. Goes from up 4-1 to losing 6-4. Still don't understand unless they gave back points.
Andy Smith on mat 8
Smith up 4-0 after 2
Smith wins 7-1
Catka on mat 8
Up 3-1 in second
6-2 after 2
Catka stays alive 11-2

Catka moving on with 6-2 win
Takedown right at the end of the 1st.
3-0 Catka
Same score after 2
Catka advances
Hokies go 2-2 in next round of consolation. Latona and Crook eliminated. Smith and Catka move on. Hokies have 6 wrestlers remaining.
Henson and Andonian wrestle at 8pm in Semifinals.
Four remaining in consolation will be wrestling for All American status in Blood Round this evening as well.
Henson and Andonian both will be Mat 3
National Championship at 125 will be #3 vs #8. #3 from Iowa made NC STall look like amateurs but only lost one point to it and won 3-2
#1 in 133 may get eliminated on two Stall warnings in final seconds of 2OT.
Review changed it back to 2-1 so only needs escape.
Fix is in literally and figuratively saved by reviews twice. Will battle #6 for National Championship
141 is a chalk #1 vs #2 Final
Henson coming up
0-0 after 2
HENSON IS HIM. BEATS #1 1-0
HENSON WITH THE 1-0 UPSET
what a tough fight for henson to hold on
Was bleeding under his eye in the interview
Henson will face #6 Gomez from Michigan
Absolutely flabbergasted by nebraska taking top
"I'm so bad I'm gonna ride your arse" ~ says no one
Lots going on now
Mekhi is in, Bryce is in, Stewart is on deck
Mekhi advances 8-4
MEKHI 4X ALL AMERICAN
Bryce up 1-0 going into the 3rd
Fuck that's three matches that our guys lost in final thirty seconds by letting takedown happen. Could have just run away from him.
He had him in a great spot too. Should've been able to close out that match in the third.
Could have taken a Stall and still won and didn't even have any warnings.
The art of the stall. A critical part of wrestling tbh
damn.. Bryce felled in SV
Dammit Bryce what a tough match
Stewart in 1
Smith in 6
Catka in the hole 6
Stewart advances
Stewart win 3-2
Smith out 8-0
Hokies up to 5th place as a team
Catka 0-0 after 1
WTF is Catka doing
dudes trying to throw up an inverted triangle on Catka
don't understand why he took top there at the second round tied 0-0
No idea. Cost him the match. Coach couldn't get the stalls called.
Mekhi in 1
How the fuck was that not called out of bounds?
Mekhi ends his career getting felled.
Missed it putting my kid to bed
Awesome turn around from. Review
How is this taking so long? Mekhi kicked the coach in the other mat
Damn straight
Mekhi advances 4-0 counting RT
Jesus, the separation from Penn State to 2nd is greater than the separation from 2nd to last.
Yeah it's pretty ridiculous.
Stewart on mat 2
Stewart falls 4-1
Stewart has a lot of potential. Sad to see him go down like that
Wrestles tomorrow for 7th place
I can't find an actually current bracket, how many guys do we still have in?
trackwrestling.com
Four I believe. Andonian and Mekhi in consolation semi. Stewart in 7th place match. Henson in Championship.
That is correct.
Stewart is an absolute stud. Tech falls no 25 from navy for 7th place.
Mekhi will wrestle for third after winning in Semis 9-6
Andonian lost in the Consolation Semis so will wrestle for 5th place
Andonian wrestling now for 5th
Trails 7-5 after 1
Andonian gives up back to back falls to finish 6th
don't know how bryce's shoulder didn't pop there
BA is exciting but his style is pretty risky. As evidenced by how he just got pinned.
BA's risky style has brought some of the most memorable moments over these past years and that's what I've loved about watching every time. The pin that Cornell's Shapiro did on him earlier today was the 1st time I've ever seen that happen when Bryce was on top when he got pinned in a split second.
Mekhi on mat 1 now
0-0 after 1
Trails 1-0 but over minute of RT
Damn. Loses 4-0 Tough way to see it end. Finishes in 4th.
Dang, how many times have we lost to a take down in the last 30 seconds this tournament?
Six or seven unfortunately
Hokies have now dropped to 8th in Team standings
Unacceptable when you have all 10 weight classes qualify
To be fair there were six other teams to have all ten qualify and I believe all six are ahead of us. We were ranked 13th in team rankings coming in so finishing top ten is still above that. Caleb can get 4 points with a win. Bonus 2 for fall, 1.5 for TF and 1 for MD.
6th is likely the highest we can finish.
It's Penn state and then everyone else. I think 2nd -8th was a spread of what. 10 or 15? And peen state has a 50+ point lead on second?
Pedu actually has an 84 point lead over Michigan 155.5 - 71. Michigan to Oklahoma State in tenth is 15 points. 71-56
133 championship match has taken 25 minutes with reviews
Henson up next
Henson is putting on a clinic
Henson up 13-4 after 1
13-4 Henson after 1
15-7 going into 3
NATIONAL CHAMP FAM
Wow awesome Made it its own post
Hokies end up 7th overall. Crazy the difference a couple matches could have made it. Andonian alone could have moved them to 2nd if he had avoided the last takedown in the semis. Hokies allowed six takedowns in final 30 seconds of matches so hopefully something they learn from.
Where did NCStall finish?
Tied for 11th
Big Failure for NCStall as some had predicted them going into the tournament to finish as high as 2nd
That's my silver lining for an otherwise disappointing tournament (obviously excepting Hansel's title, of course).
Yeah! He's so hot right now!
I'm not crying. You're crying
Thanks for posting this, I could watch it all day!
