OT: The Future is Now (if you live in Christiansburg)

With all the heads exploding about the imminent demise of Virginia Tech as a university due the possibility that our beloved women's basketball coach may leave, this seems to have fallen under the radar.

I think this is actually a much bigger threat to Virginia Tech, as I could see a mass exodus of students leaving Blacksburg for ... Christiansburg?

Yeah, still not paying for Doordash or drone delivery. Living in the county I think my neighbor likes to shoot them out of the sky with his shotgun whenever one flies over his property.

That's a federal crime, especially if the drone is operating for commercial purposes. I'm pretty sure it's a crime even if it's being flown for recreational purposes as long as the drone is registered.

what if your trained falcon "accidentally" takes it out?

Straight to bird jail.

They're called "zoos".

I thought they were called bird cages.

Sometimes. They're also sometimes called aviaries.

I thought those were in a woman's belly.

no, you're thinking of the volvo

Lol, that's a car. You're thinking of uvula

I visited a school named that once. Can't remember the name. Mulva?

Isn't it also technically illegal to fly any drone not registered with the FAA since they are in "US Airspace?"

Yes, if it weighs over .55 lbs, fully equipped.

You seem to know an awful lot about drones. Are you with Wendy's?

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

No. I have a Part 107 license to fly for my job. I mostly do imagery capture and a little bit of surveying for engineering design, and other odds and ends. The liability with those things is so high that I spend more time studying and keeping up with the laws, than I spend on flying, maintenance, safety, etc.

or repairing...
We have used ours once for topo work. With not so good results.

Yikes. That's not good. It's always best to get training from a reseller or similar vendor.

I've only had one incident that required repairs. I was landing and had touched down and for some reason it decided to transform into a lawn mower and flipped belly up.

A bit off this off topic, but I was reminded of a story one of my fishing clients was telling about his uncle who happened to have a pilots license. He was in a big assed hurry one evening driving down Afton Mountain in Nelson county and got pulled for speeding by a state trooper. The trooper came to his window and asked him for his pilot's license since he was flying down that mountain. Of course, the fellow came out with his wallet and pulled out the pilot's license and handed it to the trooper with his registration. When the trooper quit laughing, he gave the fellow a warning and a great story to pass along.
When drones first came out, I was living in the country and vowed to shoot down any one of those devils if they came within shotgun range of my house. Fly higher and don't try to peek at my wife in our outdoor shower !!!

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

This reminds me I need to renew mine now that I'm not doing it as part of a public safety agency. How are the restrictions in VA on recreational use? Every damn HOA, CDD and planned community here has placed restrictions on taking off from property within them here in Florida.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

I don't think I can answer that because I don't do any recreational flying in VA or anywhere else. Here in NC I don't know of any HOAs that have imposed restrictions. I think most municipalities just want to make sure no one is flying over crowds at events or otherwise causing safety issues. Beyond that if there's an incident then the FAA has jurisdiction. But even then I've see a few "mini" size drones going up for a few minutes at concerts.

So I have decided that drones are going to take over the world. There are no restrictions on those things in TN.

My roof got damaged in a storm and the insurance inspector used a drone. I sold another house of mine in TN and the agent used a drone for aerial photos. To top that off, the local HS has a drone club.

I am an electrical instrumentation and controls engineering Manger that does work on the Nuke plants in the Southeast. We use drones there too. We perform inspections in areas that are either too hot temperature wise or too high a dose rate radiation wise.

To see these drone guys try to fly these things in small cramped areas with valves and pipes all over the place is something else. The funny part is if they crash one in a high rad area, it's lost for eternity.
