The 4 🌟 6'2, 265 lb Defensive Lineman was the #54 player in the Class of 22.
He only played in one game so far at Alabama.

I like how "HURT" is in his first name.
Oh yes!
Wow. Good get. Let's see what J.C. Price can do with him.
I think he slots into the top 10 recruits for VT of all-time, based on HS rankings. Higher HS recruits include KJ, TT, Macho Harris, Kendall Fuller, LT, MV5, Devon Hunter, Holland Fisher... Any others? Maybe MV7 would have been top 50, but he predates official HS ranking services.
MV7 would have been a top 15 recruit
I thought that he was somewhat under recruited. That the recruiting noise was all about Curry and Vick was second-tier. Would both have been ranked in the top 15? I definitely was not following recruiting at that time, so you may be right.
Perhaps, but if scouting pod casts and blogs were around in 1998, MV7 would have gotten a ton more buzz. He was starting to not become a secret anyway when he signed with VT.
I mean I get the hindsight point of recruiting, but I played against and saw MV7 play in a high school all-star game and I remember thinking he was amazing. However, everyone else (myself included) though Curry was amazing too and there were questions about MV7's passing ability and handing of a college offense. This was pre the read-option dynamics that would have made him a no-brainer from a system standpoint.
Point is at the time, he was under recruited and wasn't as highly rated as you might think. I don't think you can say well if they had the internet at the same level now they would have repeated him.
You could literally say that about anything that turned out better than expected from that era.
Uh yeah, it's spelt Curtis but with a K, H, and two s's. Its pronounced Kevin.
Rhymes with Leal
So... two, maybe three years of eligibility left? Hell YEAH!!!!
how much beer was actually consumed here? like, an ounce?
It's wrestling. Even the drinking is fake. Like not fake, but not drinking as much as it looks like.
So, a half an ounce?
Of foam.
I see somebody was tired of playing with the scrubs and wanted to jump to the big leagues.
Oh. And I will choose to be happy about this news.
ditto
Thritto
Funny, me too.
I think I'd be excited if one of Alabama's towel boys transferred to play linebacker for us.
So one of their actually defensive linemen? Hell effin' yes!
Interesting how many D Tackles this puts us at.
1st Team: Peebles Fuga
2nd Team: Copeland Perry
3rd: Team: Pene Gilliam
Reserves: Malachi Madison, Emmet Laws ('24), Ishmael Findlayter (Moved from DE), Hanchuck ('24), Gerard Johnson ('24, moved from DE)
I would assume Findlayter at least gets moved back to DE. Then next season we lose Peebles, Fuga and Pene so not quite the logjam it appears to be. Would be something like:
1st: Copeland Perry
2nd: Gilliam, Laws
3rd: Hanchuck Johnson
Is Perry big enough for DT? He might be more suited for strong-side DE.
And it's interesting that his weight coming out of HS was 265 and his weight in 2023 at Alabama was listed at 265. You would think if he was going to play DL at Alabama they would have the nutrition and strength and conditioning team getting him closer to their typical DL weight. Saban ran a 3-4 defense and his DEs played at 290+.
And maybe that's why he played one game in two years and is transferring out
Either way, i am glad we have him
Thinking outside the box - maybe we're going to get him to a lean 245 and play him at Mike.
How about QB or punt returner?
wasn't Bruce Taylor a 265 lbs mike?
Give or take, yes... and Wiles is no longer here so DL's shouldn't have to run 4.5 40's any more.
I don't think we will turn away any that still can run a 4.5.
I really see Copeland pushing for starting minutes. Hes a hammer.
I don't care that he probably couldn't see the field there, I'm going to decide to believe that we have now big dogged Alabama.
I suppose that means I'm following hokie07ME's lead, and also choosing to be happy about this news.
Absolutely big dogged them.

Anyone know why he left Alabama? I'm always sus of players who transfer down from a top program - I think (no hard data) that they are more likely to be a Jordan Williams than an APR.
That said - this feels like a big get. The fact that he has multiple years of eligibility left means our coaches have time to coach him up. I think using an open scholly to get the 'best available' athlete is a fine strategy in the portal era.
There is the coaching change aspect here to think about this time around with Alabama transfers.
100% - that's why asked if anyone knew why he's leaving bama, and why I'm more optimistic than I would otherwise be.
As DC said below, Cautious optimism is the thought right now.
Bar, let me persuade you to follow my example, and take a turn at illogical optimism. I assure you it is very refreshing after sitting so long in one attitude.
I'm pretty positive I feel like.
Oh, yes. But you are rational and logical in your optimism. Take it to the next level.
I am imagining you saying this while sounding like Jeff Spicoli
Ultra-productive HS player with tweener measurables which hurts at Bama. Got stuck in no man's land between 3-4 End and Jack. I think he has a chance to be a great DL for us.
Makes sense!
Hell yeah! Dance!
Future SEC teams need to load up on SEC talent
Welcome to the days where transfers tag their sports agency in the commitment tweet/X.
Cautious optimism. He was not in the picture at Bama in terms of playing time in real games.
Ehh, backups at Bama or Georgia would be star players elsewhere in the country, and we've known this for a while. They are teams that get top of the pile elite talent to it every year, and the guys who will get legitimate playing time don't transfer out.
I'm full on optimistic about this, because if he's good enough to get recruited there in the first place, he's talented enough to dominate in ACC play. And if we can start dominating the LOS, we start to look like the VT teams that we fell in love with back in the 90s and early 2000s, which bodes very well for us under Pry, and couldn't come at a better time given everything going on with ACC instability right now.
very fair. I'm still cautious. He did not transfer to another SEC school for example. We've seen players transfer from GA to Bama for example recently. I hope he dominates, and you can never have enough top 300 type guys
Just saying, if you're trying to maximize your potential draft stock after getting sidelined at Bama as a high end DL, would you choose to play against ACC offenses or SEC offenses?
He would have to sit out a full year if he transferred to another SEC school
only if they enter the portal after February, yes
1) It's pretty hard to to break the 2-deep at Alabama as a true or redshirt freshman
2) Kane Wommack used a 4-2-5 defense at South Alabama, I presume that's what he's using now. Maybe he was told he's not going to be a scheme fit. Maybe he doesn't like the new defensive coaches. Maybe he committed to Bama only because of Saban.
3) This is from his 247 profile:
Sound like the prototypical Virginia Tech DT.
Yea, this has VT DT all over it.
Saban kind of broke his own unwritten rules on size/length for his DL players with Perry, but he was simply so productive and good at football that he was both a highly-rated recruit and a take for Saban anyway. He got stuck between the size/length/speed profiles of their 3-4 End and Jack LB, and wasn't the ideal fit at either for them.
He is the size/length/twitchy profile we have seen in some of our best DL in the past. I am hopeful he will become a strong contributor for us, but there is nothing wrong with cautious optimism about incoming transfers, and obviously not all these Bama, UGA, Ohio State transfers end up working out.
Thanks for the insight. It does make me wonder though because he is transferring in the Spring after seeing the change of defense. In theory, the new Alabama DC Wommack's scheme is a 4-2-5 defense that utilizes a pass-rushing DE that a DE/LB hybrid type player should thrive within. Seems like Perry should have been given new life with Wommack's scheme. But, idk, I'm just glad he's at VT and I hope he translates his talents into double digit sack seasons.
This is about one word - FIT. He was a great HS football player without GREAT measurables.
Lots of changes at Bama and anyone leaving after spring likely got the exit interview we like you, but you don't fit what we are trying to do here.
I'm not saying he is an immediate star, but this is a guy with great football instincts, he fits our system and has a lot of eligibility left, so he is set up to play for a couple of years even if he is rotational this year.
Bigger win than many people realize.
Khurtiss Perry anagrams to Uh Spry Striker so maybe he should be playing the other football. but it also anagrams to Pry Shrieks Rut so make of that what you will
I would very much like to see UVA quarterback Anthony Colandrea have his face punched by a spry striker.
Is he actually going to be their QB again next year? I figured he would have hung up the cleats after that last loss to us.
UVA fans seem convinced he's going to be fantastic, and their best option at qb.
One of my takeaways from the Fuente era is the best on your team isn't necessarily good.
Easy to hope for improvement when your point of comparison is so low.
With his attitude, arrogance, and punchable face; I bet he gets put in his place (which should be the bench) by Week 7. Whether that be by injury or poor performance is TBD.
For real, I don't think he has the size or strength to take the punishment a D1 quarterback is required to endure. He may be tough, but it's hard to be tough when your musculoskeletal system isn't attached in places.
Yeah well UVa is also a school that NC State replaced App St with on their schedule in 2025 and 2026 as their easy OOC games, so who cares what they think.
If he just had one more S in his name you could get "Pry shrieks RUTS" (Run Up The Score), which would be awesome.
khurtiss.... khurtisss... i mean what really is the difference honestly
The difference is one "s".
Extra "s" makes him a dangerous sneki snek

It's a snake... In snakes clothing!!

Damn, that's a blast from the past! Now I'm gonna be seeing those badgers popping up in my dreams tonight.
