I think this is a big part of our recruiting strategy at the high school *and* portal level. If they sign elsewhere out of HS then, "We wish you luck there, but if things don't turn out the way you wanted them to, then keep us in mind. You can always come home."

(to answer my mildly rhetorical question... yes, it's preferable to get them out of high school, but if we can get 2 or 3 years of them starting after year 2 or 3, then it's still a pretty good deal)
I think this is a really interesting question. Is it perhaps a BETTER version of the Beamer way?
I never want to lose an in state top recruit (especially to Tennessee, yuck), but we haven't paid them a dime, and we haven't had to worry about them portaling after they've developed in our program.
I guess I kind of just made a case for portal as a whole, but I guess I would prefer this than the Devon Hunter situation. (Too soon?)

If 6'2" 222lbs is accurate, and legends of his speed aren't over exaggerated, I dont know what we got. But I can imagine it would be like tackling a python in a tornado while riding a bronco. Fingers crossed.
The best part of this is knowing that somewhere there is a Tennessee fan crying that they've become just a feeder school for the ACC.
I watched a fair amount of Seldon over the last two seasons. He CAN play running back, but tends to run very upright and take hard shots, which ended up becoming injuries too often. Coming out of high school, he was a receiver recruit who was a big athlete, and the Vols, who were very thin at tailback, moved him to running back.
It will be very interesting to see how the Hokies use him, but a top of the Commonwealth recruit coming home isn't a bad thing, especially when he showed that he has the talent to be a contributor.
Plan is to use him in a Percy Harvin type role. Screens, quick slants, swings out of the backfield, handoffs, etc. Dude is an insane athlete for his size and I agree that he was misused at RB. A natural runner but not a natural running back, if that makes sense
The Jaylin Lane role is going to be perfect for him. I'm sure that sold him on VT.

We did. Why? he had 3 total tackles -THIS YEAR- and zero sacks.
And???? Doesn't change that he "signed" or "committed" or whatever else you want to call it just to be enrolled for paperwork purposes before transferring immediately to Wisconsin.
So what does it mean that Seldon is "signed"?????
When Varner committed there was no binding paperwork. You could enroll at one school, leave, and enroll at another the next day without penalty. Now you officially sign a binding document that keeps you at the school until the next portal window

Supposedly, things are different this year. I don't have the exact documentation to support this. But, somewhere along the way, I read that transfers are essentially signing something binding. A "commitment" isn't really happening anymore without that signing.
His commitment got leaked before he had a chance to publicly commit. He's contractually bound to VT.
