I threw this together quickly so we have a space to talk about the upcomming roster changes with the portal reopening soon. I am in the process of cleaning the old spreadsheet up and hope to have the live updating google sheet ready by Wednesday. In the meantime if you see any errors here let me know. I know Star isn't a thing anymore, I will have to go through and chage some position titles after I finish reading French's article.

Dude! That's some work!
This was a bit easier to throw together since I already had everyone in a spreadsheet from the Winter window. I need to see if VT has updated the roster page for Spring, I imagine some of these players have quietly moved on from football/VT.
oof. some players better surprise us, because looking at that roster, i don't think there is a single pre-season all-ACC player. hopefully at the end of the year, we have a couple sneak onto 3rd team all-ACC, that's probably the best we could expect. not good.
Rimac should be pretty good, but hard for 1 OL to look good and get noticed if the rest aren't decent.
There's just too many unknowns on this roster to know until August. It could be that Seldon has an APR type breakout in Bburg, the OL gets it together, the edges bring the heat, and some of the young guys surprise us. Or it could be that we have too many new faces on the roster and the staff and we look discombobulated for the first 4-6 games like we have the last 3 seasons.
Yup, time to be stupidly optimistic until reality crashes us back to earth. 15-0 Baby!
Don't do it man, it's not worth it. Prepare for 4-8 with a stagnant offense and improved but inexperienced defense. Big question is what will happen after
Just like my post, I am pretty ambivalent about this season. Plenty of time for me to hop on the hype train, but for the time being I don't really know how to feel about the team. There are way too many question marks.
Agree but it's still college football! Or a reasonable facsimile thereof at least /s sorta
Despite NIL, portal, coast to coast conference, and the mouse trying to destroy the sport we still got all of this content in 2024:
and those are just the ones I came up with off the top of my head in ~2min. College football can still be fun you let it.
Idk, i'm pretty hardcore when it comes to college sports (especially football) and i can tell you this with 110% certainty; it's not FUN when the Hokies are losing/not competing
The talent on the 85- or now unlimited roster- has not been upgraded in any significant way by Pry. Thus it's insanity to expect different results next year. This roster is very similar to a Fuente one. And the results have shown.
I expect nothing, but hope that the coordinators can at least make the team more exciting to watch. The roster has almost no one you can point to and definitively say how they'll be one way or another except
Bob Schick andthe kickers.Update: this roster is now a complete mystery
Holloway may be listed as a senior. We all know he has at least 3 medical redshirts he can be granted. Not Tic
I strongly considered dropping the class column to avoid this conversation altogether.
Well it may be accurate academically, bit it's meaningless now in terms how many years left he has.
Can't argue with you there, that's actually why I don't bother listing it is as eligibility anymore.
all hail the portal!!
Buckle up
Oh this would be really really bad. Can't imagine anyone in the AD surviving that if it's true.
Edit. I see they tagged Joe Roger's so I believe none of it certainly a bad parody account.
Always be careful of these 2 words, it makes it nearly impossible to be incorrect.
Yeah from what I've heard the team could lose "up to" 114 players to the portal.
You understand completely.
We know we have to drop 8 to get to the limit. That plus a few hard convos and people upset with their prospective PT means at least 7 more, so 15 players in the portal will not be a shock and will be less than 25.
The current count I have with the announced transfers is 106. We should be pretty close to the set roster and I would think any other transfers out are because we found someone to transfer in.
FWIW, I'm 98.9% sure this is a fake profile who just likes to churn the rumor mill

The spreadsheet is now updated to reflect what is on the athletics webpage + the commits not on campus yet. Some of the players' listed class are wonky, but as discussed above:

Updated with recent portal additions and all of the on3 ratings I could pull. The rating used is the most recent whether it be their HS or TR rating. Some of the transfers out will get updated by the recruiting services, but probably won't get reflected here. Once the dust settles on the portal I will do some comparisons of transfers in/out including the roster changes from the winter window.
Edit: Also, it's embarrassing how many ungraded LBs we have on this roster. Hindsight is 20/20 and all, but man what was Marve doing?
By my count we only have one roster spot left and the Spring window closed on the 25th, so technically no one else should be entering. I'm sure there is some roster size wiggle room with the house settlement still not settled, but we should be getting pretty close to what we'll enter Summer workouts and Fall camp with.
Say we really have only one spot left, who does everyone want us to pick up?
"I'm sure there is some roster size wiggle room"- of course there is. It's not 2019 anymore.
A new AD
We need a good OL and a good linebacker. Maybe we can find a good 2 way player Travis Hunter style?
HokiesSports pre-camp roster update. We're still at 111 guys, I know the roster limits and house settlement stuff remains murky, but it will be interesting to see how the numbers work out between now and the start of the season.
Some simple analysis:
34 duplicate numbers 👀
8 running backs
202lb punter
Lost 1 LS and 1 kicker and gained 1 punter and 1 WR since my last roster update
The duplicate number thing just proves we aren't serious about fixing basic mistakes. Cost you a game and got away with it the second time. Just ridiculous.
It's not the numbers that are the issue. It's the situational management of the players. It's not like there are 3 qb's with the same number. We weren't the only team penalized for that last year. That doesn't forgive it, but it does happen.
And fwiw, Bammer had 36 double numbers last year too. All I see in here is that we need to spend and emulate the big teams if we want to compete with them, whether it's NIL, player rooms, weight rooms, practice facilities, etc. Well, all the big boy football teams have double numbers. it has to be a part of the deal with over 99 players being a part of the team.
^^This^^
I love Pry, but his situational awareness on gameday is Mike Londonesque. He's is downright bad and not getting better.
there is absolutely no need for that. At MOST there should only be 11 duplicate numbers if we have 111 players. There is really no need to have three times that. And, even then, there are surely players who will never sniff the field - they should be the ones wearing the duplicates.
I swear, if I see duplicate numbers on the field this year I don't care if Pry wins 15 games, I'm done with him
I was curious how this compared to other schools. Here's a small sample with a couple blue bloods another probably closer to our funding level:
Ohio State - 24
Georgia - 45
NC State - 38 (including 3 w/ #8 & #25)
34 seems pretty normal? The problem is that the coaching & support staff is missing it, not that the players have duplicate numbers.
We cant dress 105 for games, we can only dress 70 for ACC games unless that changed this year
Dont forget we have a retired numbers... but yeah... 34 is a lot
We have 4 right?
According to this we have 9, but some of them are still used so I am kinda confused
https://hokiesports.com/retired-numbers-and-jerseys-at-virginia-tech
To be fair, the italics are hard to recognize. These are the retired numbers:
10 Frank Loria
25 Frank Beamer
73 Jim Pyne
78 Bruce Smith
84 Carroll Dale
Of course 25 is still used in honor of Frank.
I honestly think this plays into recruiting. I think what number a kid can get may weigh on their decision where to go. If they have been number 8 all their lives and this is in their twitter handle, for a team to tell them they can't be that number certainly carries negative connotations. I'm not saying it's right, but with the way we're trending in CFB we will do whatever we can to satiate potential players.
And as other have noted, this is not a VT issue. We're likely in the middle of the pack regarding duplicate numbers. Our issue is that the coaches can't set up squads for each phase of the game without somehow making sure there are no duplicate numbers. If you're on the punt team, you can't have the same number as someone else. Is a starter hurt? Make sure their replacement is not a duplicate number 2. Seems feasible with the number of coaches and assistants on the sideline. Give me a sideline pass and I'll do number QC.
that might be true but it just reinforces entitlement which I think has caused a whole lot of other issues but that's a discussion for another day (off-line)
