This might be the first game I miss in over 20 years. Just can't get myself to watch after last week and this feeling I have that were going to lose tonight in a game that should be a gimme
After watching how ODU stymied Indiana in their opener and then watching what Indiana did to Indiana State made it pretty clear ODU won't be a gimme game. Indiana had a 23 minute TOP advantage on ODU yet still only managed 27 points because of ODU Red Zone Defense. Indiana put up 73 points last night on Indiana State and their starters sat most of the second half.
Their all American line backer retired from football this week (he spent all last season injured). He played against Indiana though.
Just when you think things can't get worse, you realize they absolutely can. I'm hoping we play like the clearly better team and show signs of life but I don't plan to watch. Sadly I just can't justify investing my time to watch this game. Go Hokies, hoping for the best.

I am legitimately curious about how the team responds. If they come out fired up, do not fold at the slightest sign of adversity and actually win the game by more than 7 points, I'll at least pay some attention going forward. If they play weak and lazy, fold up and lose (heck, even if they squeak out a win), Pry needs to be fired immediately, we name someone on staff interim coach, Whit is fired as soon as we can and we just have a caretaker AD until a new one is hired.
I'm headed to Hartford for a conference so I'm not sure I'll be able to watch, but I also won't be watching any other games probably. Wearing my VT gear on the plane though! Go Hokies

I guess the solace I'm taking from this is that this is how a team plays when everyone in the building knows their days are numbered.
I hesitate to call this rock bottom, yet. But it's pretty bloody close. The real question is how long we'll be there. Will it be a century of humiliation or will the AD be completely gutted and rebuilt so we are competitive again within the decade? Hard to know.
I do think we have a chance. We are in a weak conference and you have massive roster turnover every year. We don't have to beat Ohio State or Georgia. Heck, we don't even need to beat Miami or Clemson. Just beat the likes of ODU, Wake Forest, Duke ... and we can get to 8 or 9 wins. It could happen quick. It seems to be quite difficult to parse Techs bad players from players in a bad system or the combo of both. At this point I wouldn't be that shocked if even Drones, who certainly has had his struggles, transfers to some smaller program like a Western Michigan and just lights it up. Could see similar glow ups at decent programs from guys like A. Greene, Copeland, even Benji. It'll happen to someone on this roster.

VT is uniquely poorly positioned to compete in the Pay For Play Era. It's why when everyone was crying for "these poor athletes," I was wary that VT would rapidly fall behind teams that would simply price them out of the market for better players...and that's pretty much exactly what's happened. Look at us now--we have cornerbacks who can't cover anyone, linebackers who don't tackle, and OL that can't block, and a QB with zero awareness.
Sure, Pry is a total duncecap and with an even marginally intelligent coach, we can get back to the point where we are beating ODU and the like. But the ACC is about to fall apart and we clearly aren't going to be a target for the P2 at this point.
You look at Duke who's all of a sudden gone "all in" on Football, overpaid for a QB, and are about to go 1-2. Do we want to do that?

Delayed stream of consciousness post here. Didn't get home til 3AM (after being up for 44 hours straight). The tailgate was fun (if a tad warm in the sun). Amazed the crowd was as large as it was-just shows how great our fans are (though interestingly the West stand were the 'emptier' ones. The first half was ..'painful' but just a dull pain. Great support from the crowd for the halftime show with the HS kids joining the MV for the show.
Was at least a pulse from the offense in the second half (hey if they had done that both halves we woulda scored 52 points, lol) ! Celebrated retaining the 'non-shut out streak'. Crowd was thinner but not mass exodus til mid to late 3rd qtr. Those left at least made some noise. The good part was we had cell and wifi service by that point so we could keep up with other games. By the 4th I was able to lie down on the aluminum bench to watch the game(wish I 'd had someone nearby take a pic.(Made it feel like I was watching from home). Sat back up after the long pass to set up a TD. Could hear the ODU cheerleaders at times even though our seats are in row 4J. Told my friend at 6 minute to go pt-'Hey we can still come back - just need 4 TDs with 4 two-point conversions and we are even- 1:45 per drive...it's possible, lol'.
We were among te last 1-2K non-ODU fans that stayed til the absolute end of the game. Glad to be two of the delusionally supportive fans. (Jokingly asked the fan in the row above me if he thought the number of people who were 'required' to stay til the end (the teams, the announcers, stadium staff, the MV and the Corp)outnumbered the actual 'fans' still there.
The traffic on drive home was 'non-existent.
Side note- we were the first ones in Lot 18 at 5:58 (beat the other earliest arriving tailgater by two minutes) and it was still dark; we were also the LAST car in the lot.
Yes we're doing it again next Saturday. Work Friday(getting up about 7 am); play in pool tournament from 7-11pm; hit the club from 1130-2am closing. Get picked up from the club at 2 am to get to lot 18 about 6am. Tailgate til 1045; walk to the game(I'm old and out of shape- we stop at benches 3 times along the way for 1-3 minute rest breaks); game s/b over by 330-4pm; drive back to Richmond and hit the club from 7/8 pm til 2am closing time. Carpe diem- gotta live life to the fullest.
