Don't give him too much credit, he doesn't know crap about basketball either. Just a hot take influencer who's obsessed with himself and not worth taking seriously

SAS spent last year shitting all over Jalen Hurts and the Eagles only to see them take belt to ass in the NFCCG and Super Bowl. When it comes to actual analysis, he doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. The guy is a hot take clown who got way too high on his own opinion over the years to the point where he now is the primary reason why so many people legitimately loathe everything about ESPN.
So if he hates this move, its probably the right one to make. If this was an SEC or Big Ten school hiring Franklin, he'd be slobbering all over it like it was the biggest mistake for Penn St to let him go.

Stephen A. Smith knows absolutely zero about Football, particularly CFB. They try to shoe-horn him in their NFL coverage and he sticks out like a sore thumb.
Chris Canty is a Hoo.
Long story short: neither of these opinions mount to a hill of ant shit.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I can't say they really talked shit about VT.... To be honest he really didn't talk about anything outside of regurgitating a few common facts any casual sports fan would know.
What's funny was his criticism about how rich he would've been with the buy out money and stating "just take some time off".
That's awfully hypocritical coming from SAS considering he's likely ESPN's highest paid person and literally works/does appearances 24/7.
I also have thoughts on other things which may skirt TKP guidelines, but I find it very contradictory that SAS is criticizing CJF for taking a job when Stephen A. Smith has routinely expressed on his show (in the past, in the now, and I'm sure in the future) and is very vocal about the lack of black head coaching jobs in football. Yet, now we have one (and a very good one at that), but he expresses how he is effectively a lame duck coach with no potential and should just fade away into the sunset and avoid doing what he loves.
What a tool.

I know that's not Chris Canty who used to come to Blacksburg every other year in the early aughts and get his ass whooped. Who on earth thought it was a good idea to put him in front of a mic? Let alone with one of the most obnoxious sports personalities there is

My favorite part of today has been just reading the countless, and I do mean COUNTLESS absolutely ridiculous takes from across the spectrum. Penn St fans are in deep coping territory right now, and fans of schools in the mid-Atlantic are just tripping over themselves to come up with the most hilarious takes.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Oh 100%, but I have to say its been enjoyable to watch the real time mental meltdown of totally not mad Penn St fans who are going out of their way to remind us how not mad they are.
Oh, and the occasional Tennessee hot takes as well

I mean, is the opinion SaS is making that bad? I heard through the grapevine that there was mutual disinterest between Franklin and LSU/Florida, so after those 2 what are the big jobs available? SaS implied Franklin shouldve waited a year before coming back. Which if trends continue, there's possibilities of FSU and USC coming open, which are bigger programs than VT is right now.
Obviously it works out for us and I'm happy we have Franklin, but I dont think the take that Franklin shouldve sat on his buyout and waited a year for a bigger job is an invalid opinion
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
TBH I think it's a lazy opinion. SaS is so removed from the minutiae of college football, he's a national talking head for mostly NBA and then NFL. I mean to talk of VT like we are some scrub no name school was pretty ignorant. Now if Franklin had been hired by Western Carolina or something ok that would be weird. But VT is a damn P4 school and a nationally known entity. I know we have been mostly down for a while now, but to talk like Franklin just took a lowly job is so freaking ignorant. Look at the footprint/region, the potential, the financial commitment from VT, the fan base, the history. Just so dismissive. It's just rage bait.
Would it really be that awesome if he took the Arkansas job? What a turd job, I guess you can chant SEC if you want, but that is a third tier SEC job surrounded by Texas, TAMU, Oklahoma, LSU.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
And the fact remains - FSU job is not open. It's like fan fiction from UVa fans I've talked to the last few days, they're like but what about muh FSU??
They don't have the money. They have over spent and over extended themselves. And further more screw FSU anyway - why are UVA fans trying to vicariously big dog us through FSU? Freaking losers man.

You know I was watching the Ovies & Giglio podcast earlier today when they had CBS' Chip Patterson on talking about the Franklin hire and they made some very interesting points....
If Franklin thought the fans and administration at Penn St was irrational and overly demanding with the way they kicked him to the curb for not being able to make good on a National Championship or Bust mindset, then why would he even want to jump right back into that same mindset at somewhere like an Auburn, Florida, or Florida State, regardless of whether or not they wanted him? Its a no-win situation for a coach that just got canned from Penn St despite being 2 minutes away from a trip to the National Championship Game earlier this year.
Their opinion, Franklin at VT is the perfect fit because, I mean hell our high water mark as a program is basically exactly where he was at Penn St. If VT is giving him absolutely everything he is asking for with a fanbase that was still packing in 55k to watch us get mollywhopped by ODU and a culture and gameday environment that literally sells itself in a conference that is easily winnable with no program at the level of an Ohio State, Michigan or Oregon to contend with, at a school that sits right in the heart of his natural recruiting footprint, there is a very serious argument to be made that there isn't another job out there that makes this kind of sense for him.
Oh, and their opinion is that VT is about to absolutely clean up in recruiting from the DMV to the Tidewater to the Charlotte area. UNC is not prepared for what VT is about to do to their football brand, and if there is one program who should be scared shitless about this hire, its them.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Godfrey and Dellenger talked about this on college football enquirer how we're going to bump up against UNC now because of Charlotte and how interesting that will be to see play out and they're the ones who were the biggest threat to right now.

I struggled discussing this hire with a Hokie coworker. He doesn't like the hire - which is fine, he can have his opinion, but his reasoning baffled me.
He questioned Franklin's ability to manage the NIL era, despite Franklin consistently eating our lunch in recruiting.
He doesn't think Franklin can elevate a program to reach big games. I pointed out that he was a field goal from the title game just ten months ago, and he responded "yeah, but that was TEN MONTHS ago."
The part that really broke my brain was when he voiced his preference for Gruden. So, Franklin isn't truly proven recruiting in the NIL era, and his on-field success was too long ago. But Gruden is better on both fronts? I had to let it go and just do work instead of talking Hokie football, which was a wildly terrible outcome.

I only intently listen to Portnoy when giving his pizza reviews. I love pizza and the mostly New Haven and NY pies he reviews look so damn good and I have pizza on the brain until I consume a slice or 8 at one of two places I go to in Leesburg.
Solo's - cuz they sell by the slice
Spanky's - cuz their sauce is the boss

This guy is an idiot, and he may be a Hokie, but your employer should seriously consider firing him because he's a threat to the competency of your workplace. He clearly has no critical thinking skills. I'm not even joking, everything here is just building into a giant red flag.
Like I know fandom and workplace aren't the same, but these are massive leaps around logic that would scare me as an employer.

It took a while, but I think I'm my 20s I realized "While functional, not everyone is very smart". So identifying those people and knowing how to just smile and nod, but later avoid made a big difference. Then you can turn back after your convo, wide eye the person next to you, and exaggeratedly mouthing "WTF ....."

Also, frankly, some people don't want to think hard about sports. They want it to be the place they let their id run amok. And there are plenty of popular sports media personalities that feed that exact approach.
Hell, I remember myself figuring out the identity of a fairly nutty poster on a particular baseball team's forum twenty years ago -- and it was a sportswriter I'd been reading for 15 years before that, and thought highly of, but who I'd never seen write a ton of baseball. I did some asking around with people who were closer, and the answer I got back was that this was intentional: he had to color within the lines for 90% of how he engaged with sports, but he wanted to be able to let himself run riot as a stupid fan of one thing, and this was where he compartmentalized it to.

this describes me with negativity - I'm generally a really positive and up-beat person IRL but sports (and TKP in general) is my negative nancy outlet where I let myself go as pessimistic as I want
that's going to be challenging over the next few months, granted, but if you get that sense from my posts that's where it comes from. I'm a different person IRL and you likely wouldn't recognize me if we talked about anything other than sports. (VT sports particularly)

I also think that with sports talk, some people want to put out the suggestions or opinions that will elicit the most extreme reactions (aka trolling), or they want to jump on the wagon of whatever/whoever is popular at the time, or even well into the past. Even if they don't really agree, they gotta either fit in, or stir the pot.

Let them talk now.
We'll be the ones talking later
Why do people give a shit what Stephen A (a basketball guy) thinks about VT football?
Why does anyone give a shit about ANYTHING that asshat says?
Did CJF grow a mustache? /s
It's gonna take me a while to recalibrate the CJF mental association
same. big ptsd for me
CJFr maybe?
SLF
Supreme Leader Franklin
Why does anyone care about anything coming out of ESPN these days?
They are still the most heavily consumed sports media outlet in the country
Yes, but I meant the talking heads
Don't give him too much credit, he doesn't know crap about basketball either. Just a hot take influencer who's obsessed with himself and not worth taking seriously
I have zero respect for Stephen A - he's a troll and doesn't actually know anything - he just likes to yell over people. I have no idea who Christ Cante is
He talks because he's scared.
This move immediately makes people talk about the ACC for football, taking away from SEC/BigTen bias.
We have haters again! We are so back.
Excellent indicator.
What did he even say?
If Stephen A is hating on it that just cements that it was a good decision. He is a shill who doesn't know how to do anything but yell to make a point and promotes a solitaire app that is so shady that espn won't let anyone but him promote it.
Why Stephen A. is underwhelmed by James Franklin to Virginia Tech https://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=47010678&type=forYou&subType=verts&en...
via @ESPN App http://espn.com/app
Link to his hot take. If we have his stamp of disapproval we did something right then.
Is it me or is most of this unintelligible? Almost sounds like he's drunk
Isn't that how he always sounds? I don't know how I don't watch ESPN unless VT is playing.

Can a moderator please ban the acronym CJF for Coach. Some of us still get a twitch when when we see that. Thanks in advance.
I move that we refer to him as FtT (Frank the Tank)
Coach JFrank? Allude to Fuente and Beamer while being clearly the current coach.
Can we just not use this at all, everytime i see CMY I assume some one mistyped my. It really made zero sense with Pry as its the same number of letters.
To steal from Brian's The Franklin Fit article, how about JMFF?
Im thinking King James II, not quite as good as the original, you know.
I like this.....I think I'm gonna use it.
Leg for you sir!
JG Frankie.....GJ!
My twitch is reaching for the whiskey, what's yours?
Whiskey for sure. DO NOT want to even think about Mr. Fuente.

Stephen A is a D2 wannabe...ignore the noise.
Stephen A is absolutely anus.
Chris Cante? More like Chris Cant he get over getting blasted by VT year in and year out

Well, I see him in the office daily, so I'm fairly certain he isn't Gruden.
have you ever seen him and Gruden in the same place?
Lost cause, my friend. Anyone who thinks Gruden would be a good hire, particularly at VT is on a different planet than the rest of us.
Probably never gonna not struggle with this person....best to nod politely and move on.
He listens to Barstool and loves Portnoy, doesn't he

Yup
