Eric had originally planned to commit on May 30th, but accelerated his timeline. I spoke with him a few minutes ago, asked him why he sped up the process, and he told me, "When I first got the offer I really wanted to commit then, but decided to wait. ... I always wanted to go to Virginia Tech, so it was never a question".
Eric still plans to visit Blacksburg next week.
He gave me the details on how his commitment went down. "I called all the coaches this morning and told them. Tomorrow is Coach Wiles' birthday, so I really wanted to give him a present. I called all the other coaches first, then I called him and told him. He was really hype about it and said, 'Thank you for the birthday gift.'"
One of Eric's Lawrence Central teammates is linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr., who also holds a Tech offer and is high on the Hokies. Kirkland announced his top-10 on Thursday, and Virginia Tech was in the mix.
If you want more background information on Eric, I spoke with him at the end of March after he received his scholarship offer from Tech.

Your hunch here is incorrect. The person who downvoted has voted 80 times, 79 of which were +1s. I don't like getting caught up in the voting conversation because it's really inconsequential at the end of the day, but don't want y'all to think there's someone lurking exclusively downvoting folks. The voting is monitored.
It was my thumb and even though I'm in full possession of said thumb (not sure what it does when I go to sleep) I did not instruct him to downvote and he likely snuck it in while scrolling. I've disciplined him appropriately (he has to hang out away from all the other fingers) and corrected his mistake.

From reading some people who have reviewed his film it seems unclear why he doesnt have more offers. Looks like our coaches did an excellent job of finding an undervalued player. Wouldnt be surprised if his recruiting catapults with him committing to us.
The fact that he's as highly rated as he is, being a short player coming from a gap-for defense, makes me REALLY excited. I just don't think that he would appeal very broadly, but he's a perfect for for our defense!!!
I think a lot of it has to do where he played...apparently he played in a "bad league" his freshman and sophomore year so he didn't get noticed by the recruiting websites.
This warms my heart that a kid from the Midwest is saying that.
