I bow to the wishes of the board censors.
Why that was such a dreadful thing to say is not very clear to me.
There's no need for that.
This is not what we are about here.
WHO THE FUCK IS THE SLIMY LITTLE COMMUNIST THAT DARES DOWNVOTE FRENCH AND JOE ON HIS BIRTHDAY!?!?
I'm so curious now... This is what I get for studying instead of reading TKP. Should be a lesson to everyone
Awww. Now I want to know what it said. I like how (at the time of my reading this) the comment scores of RetiredHokie13 is the exact opposite of Joe's and French's comment scores. That is some synchronized agreement/disagreement.
In summary, suggesting in a derogatory manner, that an elite defensive tackle prospect who is interested in Virginia Tech, who is also a 17 year old kid, somehow doesn't have the academics in place to attend a four year college, and doing so because he doesn't have the Hokies as a favorite is bush. Pure bush. I guarantee that you would not have posted that comment in that tone if Virginia Tech was listed as his favorite.
I am not a censor, but I will shame the heck out of people who make hurtful comments about young kids who have every right to enjoy every bit of this time in their lives. I don't like when it happens with college kids playing for our Rivals, and I like it even less when talking about high school kids. I am here contributing specifically because that nonsense is not prevalent here.
Thank you for the forum.
Didn't see the OP but TS has a good bit of work to do over the next 14 months to assure himself of qualifying for any Div 1 school. That comes from a source on another forum claiming to be very close to the situation. Also according to that source a couple of weeks ago TS was still wide open as to his college choice and has 50+ options. Basically his favorite was who he visited most recently. Don't know if this ranking bucks that trend at all, because based on that source's comments I'm not really going to follow TS recruitment closely until after the 2014-15 bowl season.
My take his recruitment is that there is a long way to go, both for him selecting a school and him qualifying. No reason for anyone to slam him or slam other colleges that are vying for his presence on their roster.
You do know that UT and UVA suck so they are open season. :-)
You obviously don't know me very well, but I can guarantee you that I would have said the exact same thing about ANY recruit with academic ground to make up before they can be accepted to ANY college. I have done so over the past 15 years of participation on Tech message boards, and I don't see that changing any time in the future.
Additionally, I'm not in the habit of posting ANY comments about recruits, good or bad, without having a pretty good basis for doing so.
As far as my post being "derogatory" in any way, that's YOUR opinion. I have it on good authority that TS has an uphill battle to win in the classroom before he can meet the entry requirements of ANY of the schools on his list.
Think about this for a moment, your handle is "RetiredHokie13" (emphasis is my own) and you're making disparaging remarks about a 17-year-old kid's academic standing. Grades obviously matter in getting admitted to a college, but they shouldn't even be a topic of conversation here.
Brian Cook at MGoBlog said it best.
Like French said, that's not what we do here. Put your 15 years of participation to good use on another website, and don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.
I will put this as simply as I can.
1) His grades are nobody's business except for him, his school, and his family. It is completely out of bounds for us or any site. I do not care how credible the "source" is, it doesn't belong here. Get a damn life. Be happy you get the kids you get. Wish the kids who don't end up at Virginia Tech the best luck and fortune. And leave it at that.
2) and I can't freaking believe I have to inform such a veteran of the world of college football message board sites, but these kids READ THIS SITE. Negative comments by posters damage the University standing with the kid.
This makes me absolutely sick to my stomach. And regardless of your experience, I can guarantee if he was a VT verbal, perhaps someone would have noted that he may end up at a prep school, BUT NOBODY would have done it in the sarcastic biting tone that you used. This is so bush league.
lets ease up a little on Tim Settle. I'll be the first to admit I was a late bloomer in both college and highschool he could wind up being a smart guy. I don't know him personally and I hate to go by "sources" ill reserve judgement until I meet him myself.
Man, I feel left out. Your comment does't seem bad.
OU has to be loving that top 15 finish.
Tennessee has some pretty cool traditions if I must say. It would suck to lose out on him but that is a program that is slowly on the up&up. I get the fact that kids want to leave the state, they could be tired off the area and want to go find new friends/people. You have accomplished so much in this state why not go see what life/college is like in another state and Tennessee has some smokin hot women..
I can see why a kid would want to go to Tennessee but wow I hate their fans. Classless as they come.
yeah but we all have to think about the decision in his shoes. He could care less about the fans.. well I'm sure that's not high on his list but there are a ton of things that go into making a decision. As a 19 year old kid its tough, you have so much going on sometimes its best to take your talents out of state and enjoy it! Be thankful that you are talented enough to be considered, I know in my case(recruiting) was one of the most stressful things ever and to this day I can look back and know exactly how I felt but I knew I made the right decision for me not YOU
Been to UT for 3 or 4 games and have never had an issue. My wife went to UT, so I was treated well but I've never seen problems with opposing fans.
So you are saying there is a chance? Luckily we already have verbals from two good DT's. Hopefully we can land Sweat at DE. It would be nice to sign one in-state stud this year.
Time for the coaching staff to put in some more work
Lucky number 7?
You guys, my #sources say this was just misinformation. He carefully arranged them to be viewed as a normal probability distribution, so VT is actually tied for 1st with Penn state.

Your standard deviation appears to be too large, that peak should be much higher.
It would be nice to get 1 5 star defensive lineman someday... Why Tim why????
Bama in all caps and UCLA in lowercase. Interesting...
probably thinks "Ucla" is the actually name of the school...like Ucla University
Mind blown as to how some of these kids think. I totally get Bama, FSU, Clemson, Texas....Tenn and UVA, not so much.
Potential for immediate playing time is huge. You also forget how much of the decision revolves around the recruit's relationship with his recruiter. Finally, I think it is pretty enticing to be told that you can be part of a new chapter in a historic athletic program. We've all seen how the '99 team changed VT athletics forever. If, as a player, you genuinely believed that you could be part of that, that you could be of a team that changed history at a major university, how could you say no to that? Obviously, we know that this is a farce at UVA, but at Tennessee I can see this happening.
A Top 15.... and then he spends the time to rank them all?
Maybe its just me, but I'm beginning to get a little sick of this process. A top 15 of schools is absurd. I highly doubt there is a chance he's actually considering all 15 schools. He might be down to 5, max. Putting out a Top 15 and then planning on whittling it down over the course of the next few months just screams "Look at me!!!" and leaves a bad, bad taste in my mouth. I get wanting to let these kids have a little fun with the recruiting process and all, but this kind of crap is bordering on critical mass.
And whats even more disturbing than these kids doing this now is how much grown men are eating this crap up and not only allowing them to do it, but encouraging it. I guess its true when people say Twitter and Facebook are turning society into a narcissistic cesspool.
Yeah, there's no way he's seriously considering 15 schools.
Theoretically, we should be in a good position to land DLine prospects because we missed the plethora of in-state DLine talent last year, and have started to create a backlog of talent at other schools at their position. Unfortunately though, for some reason kids don't seem to even consider that and we might be in the same boat this year. I don't understand why we miss on so many 5 star recruits on the defensive side, even with our exceptional track record and coaches. It really just doesn't make sense.
i think we have decent shot at josh sweat
Don't count your DaShawn Hands before they Roll Tide
Society has always been a narcissistic cesspool, it's just more obvious now ;)
I did the same when I was applying to colleges. Granted I didn't put it on twitter, and no one accept my parents and me cared.
It is excessive and irritating. But yes, the worst part is that 'adults' do encourage it.
Some of the adults that encourage it, do it because it is profitable. Following recruiting has become a big business. They at least have a motivation behind encouraging it.
No, the worst part is the "adults" that obsessively follow these kids on Twitter and then trash them on any and every website, curse them, and hurl obscenities and abuse directly at them when they do not choose the "right" school. These pathetic excuses for "adults" somehow think that stalking and harassing 17-18 year olds and then bragging about it makes them cool.
If he doesn't end up with Tech, then Tennessee would be the next best thing. Let him see what's he's missing out on when he ends up on the losing side of the Battle at Bristol
There is still hope to get Tim to Settle in Blacksburg. Coach Gray and Greg Stroman have work to do.
Tim Settle's job is to pick the school thats best for him. Virginia Tech's job is to make sure he knows that school is in Blacksburg. If he doesn't pick VT, the blame lies with the coaches, not the recruit.
I wouldn't even say there is blame to go around assuming the coaches presented what our program and school has to offer. That is all they can do. If a kid likes a different school or a different region or coaching staff for whatever reason, it is just their opinion and their decision to make. We all love VT but clearly not everyone sees what we see in it. You have to think about where you want to live for the next 4 years.
Just because I would love living in a cabin deep in the forest for the reasons I would like to doesn't mean anyone else would feel that way. The realtor who tried to sell the house in the desert isn't to blame, it just isn't what I want despite there are people that love living in Phoenix. It is no different for these recruits.
There is only so much the coaching staff can do. VT is what it is : good school with a good football program and great defense. In the end, it's up to the recruit to decide where he goes to college for 4-5 years.
Its safe to say he is not going to be playing college ball in Blacksburg.
Well, I personally think that it's a pretty big problem that he's having trouble qualifying academically. Now, I don't have any idea if the #sources are accurate at all, and I'm not here to insult him personally. However, high school just isn't that difficult.
I like the idea of VT, as a D1 college, treating athletes more like student athletes. There needs to be a certain academic standard. So, in general (and not directed at this player, because "#sources"), I would prefer to chase players who qualify with ease. Grades can be a good indicator of the speed at which someone can learn, and that's important in all kinds of aspects of football. I like the idea of a smart VT football team.
Butch Jones is doing work recruiting right now
Big Whup on this list... frankly, I could care less here, 9 months from signing day... We'll live though the loss of Kirven, Nnadi, and Brown and we'll be just fine if Settle goes elsewhere.
I see in 2 years- Nigel Williams, Woody Baron, Vinny Mihota, Ricky Walker, Steve Sobzcak and Kevin Bronson all 270-290 and tearing it up at DT.
