It's the middle of June, so it's appropriate to get overly excited about, and read to much into the doings of the offseason.
Even though he hasn't taken a snap in maroon and orange, Michael Brewer is one of the favorites to earn Tech's starting quarterback job. According to ESPN.com Insider Travis Haney ($), he's the QB Beamer Co. wants No. 1 on the depth chart at the end of August.
I know the coaches in Blacksburg are frank in their desire for Brewer to come in and seize the job. The options are otherwise sparse, I've been told.
Brewer won't be able seize anything until he competes in practice. Practice is many weeks away. However, he can position himself for a successful August camp right now, and he seems to be doing just that.
Andy Bitter caught up with Brewer at Tech's one-day prospect camp last Sunday. He spoke with the Texas Tech transfer about how he's meshing with his new teammates and faring with picking up Tech's playbook, among other things.
Brewer said the Hokies get together for player-organized on-field workouts Monday through Thursday after weight-lifting. They'll go for an hour or two on the field, doing 7-on-7 work to get timing down and give him a primer on different parts of the playbook.
Brewer has benefited from a new NCAA rule that allows coaches to meet with players who have met certain academic benchmarks for as much as two hours a week over an eight-week period in summer. He said most of that time with offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler is used for installing parts of the offense, allowing him to work on that the next time he's on the field with teammates. (Coaches, per NCAA rules, still can't do on-field work with players in the summer.) Brewer's done additional film review on his own time.
Brewer's already being fed parts of the offense by Scot Loeffler. He's then regurgitating what's he's been taught to his offensive teammates. Being the liaison between Loeffler and his other offensive teammates is a leadership role and requires trust from the coaches. Additionally, he's already developing an on-the-field rapport with the receivers.
He's also saying all the right things.
"We're not happy with the way things turned out last year and we feel like we're a better football team than that," Brewer said, already adopting last year's offensive frustrations as his own. "And we're trying to compete every day and work to be better this year."
Brewer won't win the job of QB-1 in June or July. However, he seems to be taking advantage of all the little opportunities that might allow him to flourish once camp opens.

Comments
I like how he is already using "we". I take that as a sign that he has already bonded with some of the team pretty well and is taking their frustration from last year to heart. I hope he plays like he has a fire under him, we could always use some more passion on the field.
Something was done here.
This got a hearty chuckle from me. A turkey leg for you sir.
As a fan, he is sounding like a leader to me. If that translates to a starting spot or not is up in the air, but I like what I am hearing about his attitude. Hopefully it translates to success on the field.
Something is Brewing in the Burg.
Hooray, there are officially Jarrett Boykin days until our season Danny Coales against W&M!
I'm expecting the win column to be Fuller than it was last year.
Rogers that.
Once we beat anOSU we will be on the mapp for sure
I'm certain we're gonna Byrn anOSU for tons of points
Wait are your for Leal?
I'm ready to get my game Facyson and cheer for this Motley crew!
This thread makes me want to drink a Brewer two and start jumping
I'm Maddy excited about this season. I'm doing the Wang-Chung just thinking about it.
Taking a step back to consider recruiting. It brings me great joy how we are dedicating Moorehead to Fullwood.
wow this thread is awesome...I'm giving legs to everyone who made a pun. I ain't Shai about it either
Idk why, but puns Byrn me up
Leg for you, leg for you, leg for you...
If we win close games, we'll be Ekanem out.
The lady who feeds me oats comes by the barn occasionally. I Teller to Parker Ford out back.
But you're best Buds with her Beamer.
Bucky for you. Bucky for you. Bucky for all of you.
I came back to this thread looking for more updates and discussion about our new QB and this season's outlook. While I found absolutely none of that, I was not disappointed in the least. Party on, TKP.
Party On TechHokie13
Anyone else believe Football Season to be the Most Wonderful Time of the Year?
Man, that picture's gonna look so much sweeter when he's in a maroon helmet.
Will sneak over to the newly adorned FB practice area on the inside of the track and check out the crew. Saw Carlis Parker heading over the other day around 2:30
What's up with the pictures lately. Doing it once was kind of cool, but doing it to all of them it loses a lot of luster. And hurts my eyes.
I like the effect, and it's my website, so I'm going to do it as much or as little as I want. The Internet is a big place, I bet there are one thousand other free Virginia Tech websites that provide the coverage we do with images that don't hurt your eyes. Maybe try one of those out?
boom says the dynamite.
Downvote for the high and mighty stance. Like it or leave nonsense over me saying I'm not a fan of picture effects is childish IMO. I've contributed here with information, insight and overall positive presence and for my opinion on something simple to be handled like that isn't necessary. I'd expect the community we have here to be able to handle disagreeing opinions and not act like TheSabre.
A downvote for joe AND you owned up to it?!?!?
Yeah, I am not sure why anyone should here should be exempt from criticism. I thought that is what made this community great. No one thought they were above everyone else.
If I thought I was above anyone else, I would have made it so no one could downvote me. It's one line of code that I made a conscious decision not to include.
So why is my opinion on the pictures so far below yours that I can, as suggested, go find another site for VT info?
A simple response of, "I thought it was a cool effect so I have been doing it" would have been an expected reaction.
If you want to disagree with my Virginia Tech sports opinions (in comments, articles, or otherwise), I'll engage you cordially. If you want to criticize how I run the website, a second job I do on top of a 40+ hour work week, and neglect my family for on a daily basis, then you're going to get a similar response to the one I originally gave, which equates to "fuck off". If you think that's high horsed, then so be it, but it's the truth.
Jesus Christ, it was the effects of a fucking picture that I asked what the deal was because they were new. Apparently, that is the same as degrading how you run a website. On a side note, as a business major, I also learned to take any criticism to your business openly since that is how you will eventually improve upon it. Telling people to "fuck off" just because they see something differently tends to hurt things in the long run. Just your free tip of the day.
Sorry I actually speak up about my opinion and don't take what other people say as gospel on here. It was a simple question about a picture. Has that sunk in yet? I'll sit back and keep quiet now so I don't cause a riot with a different opinion.
I think what I've learned today is I would never have you over my house for dinner.
Down vote for the curse, I'm not sure he meant anything by his original statement other that really asking why the new pictures. He may have phrased it wrong but oh well.
jeez joe, don't neglect your family for us knuckleheads.
Why do you care? Its joe's site, he can run it however he pleases. A reply of "if you don't like it, find somewhere else" is pretty standard process for anyone running their own site on their own dime without asking anything in return from either the members or advertisers (of which, there are none on here).
You're complaining about how your eyes hurt from the images on a website. Has that sunk in yet? The quality and effort of what we do aside, it's like eating a dinner at a friend's house and complaining about the picture on the wall.
The eyes hurt thing was a little fun jab. Besides, even if I was serious about that, the solution of "Its my site and I do what I want so you can leave" is childish. I didn't even say you shouldn't do that anymore. I asked what the deal was with it all of a sudden because it was new and all the pictures were like that from different bloggers(You and Mark).
I appreciate the work and effort done here and that is why I am here. I have been in disagreements with multiple people on here on much bigger things and it was always handled maturely. Apparently the picture issue struck a nerve.
Ah OK, so you can toss a jab, but I can't. Got it.
Saying go away and find somewhere else isn't tossing a jab.
80 more days...
One more day! 4PM tomorrow, baby!
First, I lost it at loss of libido
Second, I upvoted this and it went from +5 to +15. What kind of sorcery is this??
You must be....
I keep my Libido in a StrongBox so I don't lose it.
Yep. No excuse for losing libido.
not even FWS?
Nope.
This needs to be added to Web MD's symptom checker data base. Those hacks almost had me believing that I might be suffering from depression and/or type 2 diabetes.
Poor Wilford Brimley...a great many things done and good work, but will always be remembered most as the diabetes guy...
I know what you mean, but to me, he will always be Assistant U.S. Attorney General James A. Wells.
I think we all experience FWS at some point during the summer months. Hopefully without the Loss of libido though.
I guess I will go ahead and post it.
Nailed it.
Irony that you were the one that escalated it.
deon newsome things were special once he and desmond frye up some eggs benedict and have a brewer two and chuck (clark) the ball around dont have to wait for auggie for that because after fall practice and huelskamp (sean) we will marshawn (williams) in to the acc championship but you dont have to believe me dahman (mckinnon) himself can teller (wyatt) hes not shai (mckenzy) at all, he knowles (demitri) at the hite (griffen) of our season we will be undefeated. charley meyer or may not ride in the beamer depends if its fuller not.
that was really lame but i got a kick out of it for a sec, was going to try and do the whole roster lol got bored and got work to do though.....
sorry for that got carried away.... brantover now. back to work
you gotta say it in the southernest voice ever to even understand what it says lol
Punctuation is your friend
it is.... but since its in a southern voice the only time you pause is to spit out a dip or take a sip of a brew no punctuation needed my friend.
If it was in a southern voice, it would be a bit more drawl'n out.
And yes, I think I would like some iced tea with that, thank You.
The sentimental side of me wants to see Leal (have we settled if it's Lee-l like peal or Lee-al?) rewarded for his dedication to the team. The rabid, irrational fan side of me wants to see the quarterback most likely to destroy all of our opponents in a similar fashion to Logan's technique when playing Georgia Tech.
I'd like to hang out with the rabid, irrational fan side of you. I think we'd be great friends!
I think we settled this. It's pronounced "Leal"
No, it's not. It's pronounced "Leal".
Oh, my bad. Must have had peanut butter stuck in my teeth.
I'm going with "Leel" because "Le-al" is already taken.
No turtleneck that game? Wow
It's because the cop was staring him down.
Must have been a warm night for Al.....obviously a late-in-his-career one, being all hot in the seat and such.
i know its been a while and i hate to bring up an old thread again, but ive been hearing rave reviews about brewer's personality recently. He's really tried to get to know everyone even down to the managers and in my opinion that speaks volumes. Of course he knows he has to do it, but still its good to see him putting in the effort. Hes won my vote! lets hope he puts it together on the field
