Hokies Basketball: Cancun Challenge 2014

For those that didn't see the announcement, Tech will play in the Cancun Challenge over Thanksgiving break this year. This will involve four of our non conference games. Looking at the slate of other teams involved, there is a good chance we could go 4-0 in this event.

The first two games of the event will be home games starting November 19th. The possible opponents for the two home games are: Elon, Liberty, Morgan State, and North Florida

The other games will be played in Cancun against two of the following teams: Miami (OH), Northwestern, and Northern Iowa.

Elon and Northern Iowa were the only teams in this field of eight that had winning records last season. Northwestern is the only other team from a Top 5 conference in the field as well.

If I had to guess, we will likely face Elon and Liberty in the home games based on distance traveled required. In the games at Cancun, I would expect Miami(OH) as the first round opponent and Northwestern as the final game opponent.

This seems to be a significant drop off in talent for the Cancun Challenge as the last couple of years they had several NCAA Tournament qualifiers and two Final Four teams with Ohio State in 2012 and Wichita State last season. Hopefully the Hokies come in ready to go and roll through this tournament.
