And to top it off, they mention Duke by bringing up Coach K. So it's not like they were not aware that the ACC existed; which can happen sometimes with the SEC being the swinging-D on ESPN

And its not like they're ignoring us because we haven't been in a title game in a couple years, because another one of their commercials prominently displays the ECU Pirate.

It's more that we've not given them a reason to remember us in the last several years. No offensive potency in an era of offensive explosiveness, no highlight stars, no wins over top teams, nothing memorable in bowl games, objectively just not a lot to work with. It's not 2003 any more. We squandered all the corporate goodwill from the Michael Vick era, and now we're no more exciting than UNC or Iowa or Georgia or pick one of many programs that we always figure are good, just not great. Thursday nights in Blacksburg aren't legendary any more, they're run of the mill. It's harsh, but it's accurate. I look forward to 'the good ole days' coming back around...

I agree on all fronts except for Bud Foster. The defense was heralded throughout the year on ESPN as one of the top in the nation just next to Michigan State. We didn't always have the best numbers but it was state several times that based on our competition, '13 defense was the best at VT. Similar to what you said, Bud achieved this by his strong showing against Alabama. Beat anOSU next season and all of a sudden, we're a team to talk about once again.

Metallica at the Battle of Bristol. That idea sounds vaguely familiar.
(I suggested this in the Music Suggestions in the Marching Virginians thread about a month ago and it generated a whopping 1 turkey leg. No, I don't feel unappreciated. Why do you ask?)

i think this is missed on everyone...also, i think it would have been MORE insulting had they "called" us, implying that no one knows about our entrance...

It's sport center...those commercials are famous for being deadpan and slightly off. Of course, they know about us (they even filmed an entrance video for us). Using Coach K is the most absurd reference...that's why they used it.
That said...I'm highly offended...come to play Lane for the start of the Miami game and all will be forgiving (or "Unforgiven"...get it?!)

WINNER!!!! This is a great pull, nicely done sir, nicely done.
I think it will be a long time before you see Skip, he has to be having a one-man orgy that Leborn switched back to Cleveland and gave Bayless something to talk about for the next 2 years.

I know they have, I was just brining up the possibility that it might not have anything to do with ESPN, but VT wanting too much money. I've always heard that the school was protective of their brand and I've never really seen VT in any commercials that weren't about the school. Besides, Oregon has no problem pimping themselves out.

Am I the only one around here who, when I hear music I actually like and think is worth having, decide to actually try to help support my favorite musicians in some small way?

Not at all. I was totally being sarcastic. I have never not bought any merchandise. Sincerely, never. Really, I mean it. Not once...... please don't arrest me
in all seriousness I am the same as you and I live in the mecca of dubious merchandise

Probably this. I know a few years ago the students voted for a Hokie effect shirt that send "Enter Night, Exit Victorious" and Metallica threatened to sue, so the shirt was not produced.

Man, they look oooooooooooooooooooooold
I thought so too!! But I think its just because I too am getting old. :-/
I thought the exact same thing when I saw the commercial this morning. I kept waiting and waiting for them to mention VT, but alas, it didn't happen.
That's a serious WTF? moment right there.

Metallica + Lane =
Unfortunately, ESPN Does. Not. Get. It!
And to top it off, they mention Duke by bringing up Coach K. So it's not like they were not aware that the ACC existed; which can happen sometimes with the SEC being the swinging-D on ESPN

I have to say I am a little ticked off about this slight...its really a slap in the face.
WTF does Coach K have to do with Metallica??
"It may take a while, but I'm sure those guys will find something"...hmmm
I see it now. It's all a SET UP! Metallica really IS going to play in Lane!

If anyone can pull it off, its Whit
My god that would be awesome!!
I want them to play for the Battle @ Bristol.
^^^^ THIS!!

I laughed heartily at this. I was expecting a more aggressive response, like this:
Well played, good sir. Well played.
To be fair, they were looking for a new gig to replace Mariano; we're already on their list. Anyone else is just waiting in line for greatness.
i think this is missed on everyone...also, i think it would have been MORE insulting had they "called" us, implying that no one knows about our entrance...
They could've been like Metallica doesn't have anything to do during the summer, VT doesn't play until fall.

I think the only fitting apology would be to slot all our games this year for 3:30 or 7pm kickoffs.
Agreed! Of course game number 234 in the series against ECU will be at noon (got my homecoming email about it yesterday).
Weavers continuing legacy, not only do we get to play ECU every year for the next 20, but we have to play them at noon!
Yes, ECU has been a fine addition to the ACC Coastal Division. Or are we in the Atlantic? Heck if I know.
I think they are our permanent cross-over rival. So that would make them the Atlantic
Dear ESPN,

hilarious...
Hmm ... ESPN doesn't have one.
you sure?
I think I've been conditioned into seeing his face and instantly wanting to throw something.
WINNER!!!! This is a great pull, nicely done sir, nicely done.

Lol ... You win, sir.
To $ec$pn, copying our sacred entrance song?

Doesn't ESPN have to get permission(pay) to use school brands in their commercials?
I'm sure they do but they've used colleges in the past...in fact, this is one of my favorite ESPN spots:
Did anyone notice how ESPN brought back the Lebron in the Cavs jersey spots within a few days of him returning to Cleveland?
I know they have, I was just brining up the possibility that it might not have anything to do with ESPN, but VT wanting too much money. I've always heard that the school was protective of their brand and I've never really seen VT in any commercials that weren't about the school. Besides, Oregon has no problem pimping themselves out.
I see a fair amount of that Western Kentucky Red Thing in their TV spots too
Not quite:
This is the second time in like the last 20 minutes you beat me to an identical response by 20 seconds haha
And both of you are on Team Cake...
Strange indeed.
I had noticed as well
Hyundai choosing to use Sandstorm instead Enter Sandman really grinds my gears.
Metallica probably wouldn't give Hyundai the rights to use the song
Yeah they are pretty testy about their music...IE Napster...
Them and Dr. Dre killed my Napster accounts. I didn't blame the whole band though. Mainly just Lars. He's a douche.
I never bought another Metallica cd ever.
wait... you buy music?
Well this was in the 90's...LOL itunes and such didn't exist. But this
was also before I knew how to get free music. :)
Am I the only one around here who, when I hear music I actually like and think is worth having, decide to actually try to help support my favorite musicians in some small way?

I do now. But I listen to old stuff.
I hardly ever buy new music. But if I do it's
through itunes.
Considering they haven't put anything out since the Black album me neither.
That also has the grungy sounding song Unforgiven, right?
Indeed.
Haha nice one. Nothing like having a album covered in sperm and blood that actually ends up being weak to end an awesome streak.
Probably this. I know a few years ago the students voted for a Hokie effect shirt that send "Enter Night, Exit Victorious" and Metallica threatened to sue, so the shirt was not produced.
already have my wife on board for our garage.... so pumped this is an epic commercial
Woah, don't forget when Hyundai decided their market was dedicated to VT fans.
We've been in a couple. Know one of the first with mascots has the Hokie bird in it.
Just gonna leave this here...
Coach Moorehead deserves one of these:

And it makes me do this:
Fuck espn
ESPN's a bunch of scrubs
I think that's being a little too generous to them.
