As a public service announcement, I was drinking New Belgium Snapshot when anOSU scored those two TDs to tie it up. I switched and the Hokies responded with a TD drive. That beer is now forbidden.
I drank a 6-pack of Yuengling Oktoberfest during the OSU game. I don't normally put away a 6-pack solo, but I have no regrets. The first 2 were to calm the nerves, the next 2 to weather the 2nd half OSU comeback, and the last 2 in sheer celebration!

So, last week, the drinking game rules between my Facebook friends and I were simple... any time LeBron showed up on screen or mention was made of him being attendance, you took a drink. Some of my friends were doing this with homemade Rails, needless to say, this was a bad idea.
However, today's nooner drinking game rules (feel free to reply and add your own additional rules, these are just a starter):
1.) Any time there is a mention on Gameday or during the broadcast of this being a 'letdown'/'trap' game, take a drink.
2.) Any time mention is made of the 'Air Raid' offense, take a drink.
3.) If a variation of the phrase, "Shane Carden is a far more accurate and competent quarterback than J.T. Barrett," comes up, finish your drink.
4.) Any time Sam Rogers does something awesome, take a drink. (I'm not entirely sure if there's enough beer in existence to account for this rule.)

Things are settling. Started abysmal and it just snowballed from there. We know they got lucky on the first scoring dive, then Facyson struggled and that provided comfort and room for ECU to gamble a bit more. Add to that our inability to consistently protect and open up holes with our offensive line which led to no running game and brewer getting crushed early, which threw his mojo off. But as we saw, some plays were there for the taking especially with Ford and Bucky being open. Now, things have settled and we are only down two scores and Bud is able to do his thing: Enter halftime and make adjustments! It's going to be a different second half. Not saying different means VT domination, just different. Things will get interesting Hokies! I'm excited. Still, we have all learned ECU can ball.
Hopefully ECU gets greedy here and we pick it off for another 6!

Defensive scheme lost this game IMO. Once they proved they could consistently beat man to man we should have changed it up. I can't understand how we stayed in the same defense at the end when they had their way in the 1st quarter.

Yeah but after they gave up 21 pts and once they were up 21-0 they weren't pressing deep like that as much. They did take a few shots, but not like they were doing at first. At least that is how I'm remembering it at this moment through all the anger. Right at the end what was it 3 or 4 plays and they score? When they had to go back to what they were doing at the beginning it was no problem for them at all.
Please cancel all future games with ECU. All it does is set us up for a possible loss at worse, and a win that gets us no respect at best. It's a terrible situation to be in.
The only thing I can think of is that maybe they are similar to other teams on our schedule, and it helps us prepare for the conference. Either way, I hate ECU and their fans, and never want to give them the satisfaction of winning ever again.

My hat's not off to ECU. I'm not giving them credit, because we did not come to play today. The team could say that they were done with Ohio State bit they weren't. Defense gave up too many big plays and offense missed too many opportunities. I had a feeling this would happen. It's sad, truly. There sent all of the momentum we had nationally. I'm sick of being just a run of the mill team in the ACC. I mean, why is it that we play better in games when the opponent's ranked? Why? That shows a problem. We need to come in every game with the hype like we are playing Ohio State. When will it be OUR time? The only bright side is that we still have ACC title hopes... And that is ONLY if we come out a better team next time.
I think we play better in those games because we have that underdog mentality with a chip on our shoulder. We certainly didn't look like that today. When we are the favorite we never seem to play well.

^^^THIS. I think that last week people gave our o-line a pass (and even praised them) because they faced an OSU d-line that was supposed to be elite. Well, today our big uglies got exposed.
The only silver lining to this gsme is that all the young players got a very valuable, very expensive lesson in humility and game prep. At least this year, the offense kept playing. Our team kept fighting. The boys even scratched and clawed their way back into the game! That my fellow Hokies, would not have happened in years past. But sometimes, its just not enough. I'm proud the kids didn't just cave and retreat into a sell. I'm just disappointed that despite all the warnings, it still happened. Go Hokies!

they had over a minute, and 2 timeouts.. that's a ton of time for a team that runs the hurry-up all the time (especially considering the good field position the drive started at) .. the defense had held ECU to near nothing for 2 quarters, no reason to think they couldn't for one more drive

6 catches ready.... 47 yard deep fade, 36 yard deep fade, 43 yard hail mary bomb(stat increase), 39 yards, 31 yards and 28 yards... all on deep balls that basically were jump balls that we blitzed on.

I'm not saying that's a meaningless stat (not sure if that comment was directed at me, but it was in reply to me). It means one guy went off the wall with a great game. Our guys didn't execute, but the D played out of their minds for 44 minutes while our O sucked for about the same amount of time. O-line was Swiss cheese, their cannon ball of a DT ate up the middle, and we shot ourselves in the foot with penalties (offensive, defensive, and special teams) at key moments. You're overemphasizing one aspect of the game. It was important, but it doesn't tell the whole story.

and after a good nap and a shower, I look back and go no no no put the computer away. There are few things I care about as much as I do VT football. Today was a bad day, it was a train wreck to begin then we had a few counter punches but to lose like that was disheartening. The kick, the two deep balls and then the hopelessness I felt.

Things are getting way out of hand during and after losses around here the past 2 season's and it was NOT this bad in 2012 during the worst season in 20 years in terms of members so ferociously turning on each other so quickly.

Good arguments both ways. There is no doubt the defense stepped up in 2Q and the second half, but I watched every play as we all did; how many deep balls were thrown in Q2-4 compared to the first? ECU went conservative because we started getting pressure, but we also got pressure because they went conservative. At the end, we knew they were going for the win, not OT, so best judgment would say they would try to beat the DBs again. I love what this game did for our young guys, but that is about all the positive you can take out other than the team not shutting down when behind. Think about all the break ups the DBs had in the second quarter and second half (excluding Fuller who played great), now how many were beyond 10 yards? They went back to bread and butter when it meant the most, and it seems we got overconfident with how well the defense was playing.
There were mistakes. He made them. Just because he's the best doesn't mean he is flawless. It might be slightly over the top, but it's not unjustified. For one quarter he dropped the ball big time and there wasn't a recovery.
I'll wait for the film review before I pass judgement. I just can't believe that if these adjustments were as simple to identify and implement as some seem to think, that a guy who has been coaching defenses (with great success) for 30 years would miss them.

no if you watched the game we didn't blitz every down then and actually played a little zone or whatever you want to call it. we made them throw over the middle short stuff and kendall and company made some great plays to deflect/creat havoc.
the 4th quarter drive was exactly like their opening drives.. ohh the blitz here ya go wr deep ball for 20+ yards. Ohh blitz again here ya go deep ball 20+ yards. At some point you have to say fuck it lets play zone get to OT and go from there, bud didn't do that and the db's got burned all fucking day long. I'm sure ECU coordinator was loving it because he just took a big shit on dbu

What's important here is that you get really really mad and let this loss ruin your night and weekend. It's not only mentally healthy, it will make a difference regarding the teams performance over the course of the season.
In all fairness, we saw DBpoo out there today, not DBU. I'm not going to blame anyone, clearly Foster communicated adjustments that worked well, but we had our backs against the wall from the get-go. Our defense let them set the table and their defense ate up everything we fed them for a long time.
the offense did pull their weight tonight. we came back thanks to our d playing something other than 0 fucking cover... Yes the o line is garbage, pathetic searels is going to need 4 new guys if we're going to go anywhere in the ACC.. But when you kick the ball out of bounds and give them great field position wouldn't the next logical idea be ohhhh fuckkk we need to play some zone, make the QB beat us with good throws..
Absolute Joke- the L is on Bud and the O-Line.. You can't blitz all game long when they have shown to throw the fade all game long.

You go down 21-0 in the first 12 minutes of the game, and you have to throw out everything you had in store offensively. Yes, the offense struggled, but the defense was shredded. And then, with the game on the line, they allow ECU to march right down the field and score in the span of about 4 plays right after the offense tied it up.
I'm as big a defender of Bud as it gets, but the defense lost us this game today. First time in a while I can say that about our team.

why because we blitzed got burned deep like we had all game and bamm there is a big fat L instead of maybe a W in OT.
If you go down 21-0 in the first quarter you don't have to change anything on offense because you have 45 minutes of football left to play.
The offensive line was hot garbage. You're not going to beat anyone playing like that.
But it's virginia tech, so the offense gets a pass again, the offensive line gets a pass again, and everyone on he planet is now smarter than Bud Foster.
Go to any loss last year and you'll see the exact same conversation taking place.
except bud refused to even try some zone that last drive or even prevent.. try it on 1st down if we get beat then blitz.. but you can't show them blitz and right away get 31 yards that's piss poor..
The offense sucked big balls and what makes it even more embarrassing was that their DT played 0 snaps before this game 350lbs being generous and he walks in and straight pisses and shits on our o-line. searels can't be happy with that for sure.
[Sorry wrong reply button, for Duff]. I'm not in this to argue, but this doesn't make any sense. We were fourth ranked in total defense last year, and are supposed to have the best (or one of the best) corner combos in the country this year. Last week ECU put up 23 against SC. They put up 28 against us today. Don't even want to go into what happened to SC the week before, which makes things look worse. No one is on a witch hunt for Foster, that will never be the case, but both sides of the ball are going to have a bad game now and again. I'm not sure if your argument is that the defense wasn't that bad today (and I hate definite statements, but they were) or that isn't why we lost the game (in which case i think you are right). Everyone has an off day, and today may have been one. That's not an incitement of anyone, it's just taking a step back after the game to see what happened.
My point is that the defense had a bad quarter, and that last drive. The offense stunk on ice all game like usual. Everyone loses their damn minds because they expect the defense to be perfect while they excuse the offenses continued suckage.
You want to say the defense had a bad game? Fine the defense had a bad game. It's football, it happens. What are you going to do? What do you suggest? How do they improve? My point is that it is what it is. Systemically the defense is fine and had an off day.
The systemic problem with this football team continues to be the bloody offense, most notably the offensive line. That's the problem with the program, that's what needs to be fixed. ECU scored less on SC because SC actually had an offense and, you know, held the ball for a while and gave the defense some rest.
I'm just being realistic here. This wasn't a championship team, this loss is literally meaningless. Bitching about the defense is pointless because we know the defense will be fine over the course of the season.
Will the offense? Dunno, sure hope so. Our success or failure this season is pretty much going to be how the offense and specifically the OL performs, and not much else.
I, well we, have already suggested something that could have been done. Play a bit, not a ton, of zone. You ever play Texas hold 'em? I'm more of a craps and blackjack player myself. About a year ago me and a few friends went to the Borgata, and one convinced me to come play Texas. Of course we got split up because it's always packed on weekends. I sat down with a full table, and one kid was just running things, taking everyone's money, he was good. In real poker they would call it a poker face, but I got dealt pocket aces and two more came on the flop. I didn't have a poker face, because I didn't care enough about losing to ruin my chances at winning. Interestingly, the third card was a queen, and then another queen on the turn, he had pocket queens as well, and thought I had trips. He went after me hard, and I took him not because I knew anything about what the hell I was doing, but simply because I got lucky, the cards fell right for me that night, but more importantly he never readjusted to think man, is there any way that kid could beat me.
In summary, if that kid went up against someone else later that night, and 2 aces flopped, he'd probably rethink the strategy. The probable outcome is that the DBs shut down the receivers and we go to OT. However, that just doesn't seem to be the way college football works out many times these days.
In any case, great game, great effort. Will be watching every moment next week and the week after for as long as I'm still kicking out breath.
our db's stopped them in 2-4th because we took away the deep ball/they didn't look for it as much and we were getting edge pressure . When they needed plays they went right back to the bread and butter and it worked just like in the 1st quarter.. we didn't get to him and he had the time to loft it up there to burn us again and again!
Here's the thing, the defense will be fine next week. It will be fine all season.
Will the offense? I dunno. I sure as hell hope so. They have a lot more work to do.

Agree. 14 yards of total offense in the 1st qtr did nothing to help the defense. Brewer's 2 int's in the 2nd qtr didn't help either.

Thanks Pete. I've been sitting one the couch for hours thinking about the game, the loss, reading comments. Have only come to one definitive conclusion. We are all here, thinking about the game, the loss, reading comments...because we love VT and VT football. How great is that? How great is it to have VT students and alumni huddled around each other figuring out how we can be better fans next week, much like our players are doing in the locker room. TKP is the reason that is possible. It's pretty cool in my opinion, especially for a day with a loss.

O-line was horrible today. Not 100% sure, but I would bet that Brewer was hit & put on the ground in the 1st Quarter today more than the whole game last week.
Not sure if anyone on here has mentioned this yet but the student section in the north deserves so much credit. It has been years since I've seen the students stay so long for a game, especially one we were getting dominated in. (West stand hokies didn't bother to show up today so no thanks to them)
This game was so hard to watch. I knew we would struggle but that was awful. I don't care who you are going down 21-0 in the first quarter is nearly impossible to recover from. Hopefully this will hit our boys hard and they'll come out fired up the rest of the season. We play the underdog role well so I hope we can step up next weekend.
No melt down here, just frustration a bit. I get it, let the CB do their thing...but they were getting beat early and ECU was making amazing catches. Just throw the defense backs a bone, give them some safety help for a breather or two. I'd let Foster deliver my child, but I can't help believing he was like F this year, we are going to make these kids learn to stand on their own so we are that much better next year. That doesn't always work, this years recruits are next years talent as we have seen with having almost all true freshman playing skill offensive positions. We probably have more freshman per down on offense in these positions than anyone in college football.
Just such a high and low game, and it's tough because we taught DBU. Fuller looked amazing, but other than that i feel the rest struggled, and we should have done more to help them on a bad day.
I trusted in Bud too much! Slye (?) needs to be evaluated on kick offs. How many times did the DBs turn their heads to find the ball? Twice? DBU my ass.

I'm going to wait to see UCLA-Texas before I answer that. Louisville was making the news for beating DaUisback, that was a lot of hype that was a little unnecessary. At this point, they look much more capable of a 2011-style season than they have in a while.
Shuuuuuuweee! Takeaway from today: It is very very VERY difficult to be a hokie fan. I mean who else consistently loses the big game (I mean CONSISTENTLY) then when you do win you lose to team x CONSISTENTLY the following week. That being said, we have a fantastic fan base that travels well and cheers loud (as seen last week) regardless and I applaud hokie nation for that. However I do not begrudge anyone who loses their cool with a loss like that. In fact in some ways I applaud you for being so emotionally vested. But hang in there my fellow hokies, we have all of acc play left. I know our national perception is down (when is it not) but we still have a GOOD chance for a GREAT season. I'm gonna go grab a bud. This game will end the magic we started with but...im glad ...yes stealing a win would be great but this young team needs to wake up ...the coaches clearly did not get them off cloud nine in time for this game ECU beat us soundly. Now wake up. Still tons of season left. This one hurt but we can still make a run on the ACC.
i'm just a little more than a casual vt fan, but why would you leave your cornerbacks on an island against a team whose bread and butter is a passing attack? drop your linebackers into zone coverage. send pressure from your d-line. ecu couldn't run the ball up the middle at all, why couldn't we resort to shutting down their passing game if we knew how successful it was for them? that game was hard to watch. but these guys are young, they'll get experience.
it's one game. just one single loss. we've still got a good shot to run the table from here on out. our guys now know the sour taste of defeat, i have full confidence that they'll pick themselves up and make sure they don't have to taste it again.

Even Kendall played sloppy at some times. But he was better than the others.
I'm proud of the adjustments we made and fighting back from down 21. That's good for the young guys. I'm very upset with the loss and there are certainly opportunities to point fingers but we can still win the coastal and get our shot at the acc ship. This is a young team and it showed at times today, but it's a long season and 11-1 or 10-2 is very much still a possibility and that would be returning to the norm for us.
If this team comes out to play again, particularly the o-line, i could see us having trouble in a number of games
My thoughts.
1) Credit to both the offense and defense for playing through adversity and from behind to tie up the game and give the team a chance at a win.
2) Of all the worst things that could have happened, kicking the ball out of bounds was about it. The ECU fans near me were sure that the coach would have played for overtime with only 1:20 seconds left in the half.
3) Every time after Brewer throws another ball late over the middle for an INT, the entire defense should smack him on the back of the helmet as he comes off field.
As for number 2, when I saw it go out of bounds, I knew that we were doomed. They only had about 15-20 yards to go to get a field goal and although the defense had been holding, they were due to move the ball. Special teams gaffes at inopportune moments has cost us in several games in the last few years. It did again today.
Can't say I'm surprised of the passing success of ECU regardless that we came out flat or not. ECU has a better passer and better wr's than OSU and approaching them with the exact same game plan was a mistake. I think ECU puts up 28 on this scheme probably any day. Now the offense is a whole different discussion...
Can we please stop talking about the team riding too high after the win last week? I don't think that was the case, the facts seem to point to us coming out not appreciating what an ECU team was ready to do after a near miss against SC. Our O line collapsed during the first half, Brewer lost confidence and started deeping balls to avoid INT, and then we starting dropping them in the 2nd...seems like a perfect game plan for a loss. It absolutely sucks.
The metal they showed in the second half deserves praise. Much like we wanted it more than OSU last week, ECU wanted it more this week. Is that acceptable? No. Does it happen? Yes.
